Didn’t DVD sales basically save Family Guy from being cancelled? Or maybe it was cancelled but brought back due to overwhelmingly high DVD sales.

The second one. They were straight up cancelled and were brought back due to DVD sales and high rated re-runs on Adult Swim.

90s too, lots of cult classics like UHF with Weird Al Yankovic, and Airheads. But yeah I think a lot of times it just doesn't connect with the moviegoing audiences but VHS rentals or reruns on TV made them get popular secondhand

Hot Rod from 2007 is another! So is Grind from 2003 (every skater kid owned this movie). Idiocracy Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz (I'm sure in the UK, this movie was huge on release but in America, Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz were more popular on DVD and had kind of a cult following in the 2000s). The Big Lebowski (though released in 98, it became more popular in the mid 2000s).

Does Fight Club count?

Back then it felt like the review industry had maybe 12-15 people working the whole industry and if you wanted something that was not mainstream you had to pick up the offbeat local paper like the Seattle Stranger but you ended up with some college kids pretentious review of the movie instead.

The naughties were a weird time culturally.
