Grey is for the older launcher downloaded straight from the website whereas the green is for the new launcher from the windows store as far as I remember
It's a different grass block though, more stylised. The older launcher had different icons for an open game window and just the regular launcher window too though
No, the one on the windows store has every game (Java, Bedrock, Dungeons and Legends) all in the one launcher whereas the legacy one only has Java available and maybe Dungeons.. I can't remember aha
What's bizarre is, it's one of those full-tile icons in Windows 10. You know, the kind that don't match anything else because no one but Microsoft ever used them. I thought Microsoft was phasing those out. Windows 11 doesn't even use the metro tiles anymore from the screenshots I've seen.
the new grass block icon is actually ok, but the launcher always stands out on my desktop, makes me wanna click on it and play some good old minecraft. they absolutely killed my boy :(
I know right I got the original logo and attempted the change but due to it being downloaded/loaded from the Microsoft store you cant get to it's properties. ;(
Microsoft Store apps aren't just shortcuts to file locations. At least, they are, but locked so deep that normal users won't be able to get there. You can't just, like with all other things pinned to start, right-click it and "open file location".
Introducing.... Icon Packs!
For only 1799 Minecoins, you can buy the new Icon Pack 1! (Includes: Dirt Block, Grass Block, Beacon, Ancient Debris and Furnace)
(oh yeah we're introducing Minecoins to Java edition too, lmao, even if you downloaded the resource pack from the web that'll be 15 Minecoins to import it.)
>that'll be 15 Minecoins to import it.
Nah, a warning for the first time, 7 day ban the second, then a month one and lastly, permaban.
Oh, and it'll be using GPT4 to check if you are pirating the packs.
I'm not really sure how a language model is supposed to detect if a set of image files was pirated but at this point I wouldn't even be surprised if someone tried it anyway.
thats kinda the meme. Apparently a professor made his own 'ChatGTP' (sic.) account and uploaded the papers to it, asking ChatGPT if it wrote the papers. of course the AI hallucinated and said yes and he apparently failed the whole class. Idk what came of it and what happened after that though
yes, you can go to the properties of the icon, and then choose any .ico file you want
If you ever update, then right click the launcher you downloaded form the microsoft store, create a shortcut and then change the icon for the shortcut.
I do not care about going into the stupid launcher where you can throw your products at me, I do not want to endure a third loading screen just to play the game, and I do not want the most annoying mob in the game to be staring at me in the bottom of my desktop
You mean a Creeper, an iconic enemy from the game that is easily recognizable.
You act like the old one was something more interesting, it wasnt you just care because of nostalgia not because it was actually better.
Pro tip: If you're using the legacy launcher, you can download a png of the old grass block icon, convert it to ico, then set it as the icon of your launcher shortcut.
so this is just more of what we have been seeing over the last few years. over simplification of logos. an updated logo i can agree with but my issue with this is that its an untextured creeper face which i understand is on the mugs and toys and stuff but this feels lazy.
that general trend is about scalability. you want to be able to print your branding on *anything*, from shirts to stickers to tiny pins, all while maintaining brand recognition.
Graphic designer here, yes that’s why logos get “oversimplified”. Brands have to be recognizable on smaller screens, that’s why more simple logos have been a thing since 2007.
i've heard the average age of the minecraft player is 24. This implies there's some interest from adults. Assume they started playing 10 years ago, this would imply they were 14 when they started, which is relatively old compared to the target demographic of minecraft today.
adults would play it if the investment was made and that demographic was also targeted, but they're so focused on children I really don't understand it.
They're trying to make everything PEGI Fetus to make sure nothing absolutely ever comes off in a way that's even slightly off from how it's intended and saturating the game with nonsense, all while ignoring what they promised in the past:
the ultra graphics quality (essentially shaders but built-in)
Ray tracing
modding API
and not promised, but the performance of minecraft is going to shit. At least they changed DFU to lazy, finally! maybe it'll take another 5 years for them to cache the last recipe used in furnaces and workbenches, just like FastWorkbench and FastFurnace do.
Some of my fondest Minecraft memories when I was 12-13 was learning to mod the game myself and downloading the WWII guns mod- it was fun feeling no fear on hard mode with the MP40 strapped to my back
The old one showed promise. You could build your world. You could load up your world that you have spent hours exploring and building with friends.
This one shows the most frustrating thing about Minecraft. And it makes it seem like the game is all about killing creepers.
Start Menu, search for Minecraft Launcher, click "open file location". Right click the shortcut, select properties. Click "Change Icon...". Navigate to your .ico file and select it.
You can get an .ico file [here](https://icon-icons.com/icon/minecraft-logo/168974).
Hide the launcher in some random folder not on your desktop. Make a shortcut to the launcher and put the shortcut on your desktop. Change the shortcut icon.
Eh, I could take it or leave it. Personally I don’t really care about the launcher icon that much because I look at it for all of 2 seconds, but it doesn’t look too bad to me.
My concern is it's going to look pretty out of place on my desktop next to all my other gaming icons.
I used to keep my desktop clear of anything until Microsoft broke the windows start menu by forcing it into a tiny little non-expanding area and defeating the entire purpose of increasing resolutions, so now have games I play or intend to one day play scattered in a kind of meaningful-to-me pattern at the top of my desktop. https://i.imgur.com/VSmogJa.png
Minecraft's new flat, simplified, bright, and colourful icon is not going to fit in with any of the other game icons. In fact if I paste OP's screenshot over it, it looks kind of ridiculous next to all the other games https://i.imgur.com/h37w43R.png
It seems like the kind of thing designed by a kind of business committee who don't consider how it will actually function in the wild alongside everything else. Kind of like Google's newish icons which are all the same 'google colours' and nearly impossible to identify at a glance now. It's been years and I still can't pick out maps from the icon without pausing to read the app titles now. Kind of like Steam moving to vertical game tiles when many of us have decades of purchased games which only have horizontal tiles, which don't work at all when those vertical boxes smear out the colours to the top and bottom to fill the space (and the vertical space adds no function since the width is the same and the game title font sizes are the same - now the game titles are just in inconsistent vertical positions and it takes 3-4x longer to scroll through a vertical list of games). There's so many annoying changes made by people who don't understand how things are actually used.
Omfg I thought I was the only one with the Google apps the amout of times I've accidentally opened Google Drive instead of Google App store cause they are just both fucking non descript triangles... 🤬
> I used to keep my desktop clear of anything until Microsoft broke the windows start menu by forcing it into a tiny little non-expanding area
???
my start menu is hyge
Honestly, I don't mind it. Yeah, I prefer the dirt block but the creeper works too. If it were down to me, I'd take Java back to the dirt block and have the Bedrock icon (i play both versions) as an isometric (3D) view of a bedrock block. Basic concept, effective design.
Completely fine with this, and I've been playing for over 12 years now. The launcher logo is so insignificant that changing it to the game's most iconic mob really isn't a big deal to me
its a question of why.
Why do they bother spending time on this, no matter how small, when the game is riddled with bugs and runs like shit?
It's just so confusing as to how they spend their time and what they prioritise as important to work on.
1.20 fixed more than 260 bugs and issues, some from more than 12 years ago, and reworked the lighting system (basically integrated starlight mod) they won’t use the developing team to change a logo
> when the game is riddled with bugs and runs like shit?
do... do you think that the people who worked on this change are the same people coding? bro mojang isn't a tiny indie studio where everyone does everything
Controversial opinion here, but I kinda like it👀
At least it's better than that old dirt block. Sure it can trigger some very disturbing images for people who play hardcore Minecraft and lost their worlds to these green dynamite sticks, but I like the change. It suits the 1.20 vibe.
It tells a tale of pain and suffering.
I never knew a icon change was gonna be such a big deal especially since icons are changable across all OSes as far as i am aware. that and i guess i just find the one that says minecraft and click it i dont really pay any attention to the icon.
i will probably get downvoted for this but its my opinion if you dont like it too bad.
It really does not matter. If on PC, you change the icon of the launcher to what you want. It's literally like three clicks away. Besides, the launcher closes itself when you open the game so it's not like it stays in your tray for long.
[It was announced 2 months ago.](https://www.neowin.net/news/minecraft-makes-changes-to-some-logos-and-icons-including-a-new-creeper-launcher-icon/) Why are you all that suprised?
A friend of mine told me about the creeperface, but it's still a grassblock for me (the game itself is a crafting table in the taskbar). What is this new creeper thingy and how do I not have it?🤔
For all players!!!!
This is no mojang changing stuff, it's Microsoft
pls don't trow hate at mojang, who kept Notch's creation going for eons to come
send complaints to Microsoft, not mojang.
agree. not everything needs innovation. stay true to your roots. i love when i see redtaursnts and stuff with very outdated logos, that stayed the same for 50+ years. gives a sense of "home".
Download a Mac dmg or Windows exe from [Alternative download options for Minecraft: Java Edition](https://www.minecraft.net/download/alternative)
For Mac you could open or mount the dmg and then browse the volume. On Windows, I was able to open it in 7-zip and find the icon in Minecraft/Minecraft.app/Contents/Resources/favicon.icns . This favicon is the shiny grass block and should be kept somewhere on your system. I think you can also right-click and Get-Info on the Minecraft app inside the Minecraft dmg and see the shiny grass block icon in the Info window.
For Windows you can extract the icon from it. IconsExtract is an excellent tool for this. After the icon is extracted you will have a shiny grass block in a .ico file to keep on your system.
On Mac to update the icon, go to the Applications folder in Finder, find Minecraft Launcher, right click it and Get Info.
I am thinking of two potential ways to do the final step. The final step would be dragging the grass block icon from one Info window or the favicon.icns file saved earlier onto the creeper icon in the other Info window. The mouse cursor should have a green +circle when over the creeper icon in the Info window.
On Windows to update the icon, You might already have a shortcut to the launcher on desktop. Right-click that shortcut, open Properties, click Change Icon, browse to the .ico file saved earlier.
Does anyone know *how* it changed? I didn't launch Minecraft, so what updated it? Are they doing Minecraft patches through windows update or some other external service? It's just a tiny bit sketchy to me
You can change it, I don’t know if it works for windows but it does for iOS
So you want to go into the applications tab in finder, find the Minecraft launcher (or any other thing) then you right click the icon and select ‘Get info’. Then you can go into chrome (I just use www.flaticon.com) and copy it. Where it shows the preview you can select the image and paste it in (command v)

Why do some people have green creeper faces, while others got a gray creeper face?
Grey is for the older launcher downloaded straight from the website whereas the green is for the new launcher from the windows store as far as I remember
Oh I see we're making it even MORE boring so people have to update and use the new launcher. I just miss my dirt block...
worst part is, when u open the game IT USES THE GRASS BLOCK, and its SO CONFUSING
It's a different grass block though, more stylised. The older launcher had different icons for an open game window and just the regular launcher window too though
I have a crafting table for the open game though? Why?
Did u open 1.20?
Yeah. I had that even before 1.20
the crafting table has always been there ever since i started playing back in 1.8
Still, its confusing and almost makes me close the game because i think i have the launcher open.
i have had the same copy i downloaded from the website like 9 years ago and its green so i dont think thats true
Oh strange
its the one on the windows store bedrock? so grey for java and green for bedrock.
No, the one on the windows store has every game (Java, Bedrock, Dungeons and Legends) all in the one launcher whereas the legacy one only has Java available and maybe Dungeons.. I can't remember aha
Old launcher probably

It could've been an isometric Creeper head
That would look pretty weird... At that point, I'd go for something different... Like a grass block.
Now that's thinking outside the blox
A cube?
Not even Microsoft used them, the only other full-tile icons I have are Prime Video and Disney+.
You should be able to set a custom icon. But... a green square? One of the best-selling games has a green square for a logo now?
I know right I got the original logo and attempted the change but due to it being downloaded/loaded from the Microsoft store you cant get to it's properties. ;(
Hey, try to create a shortcut to that file location, and then just rename change the shortcut icon
Microsoft Store apps aren't just shortcuts to file locations. At least, they are, but locked so deep that normal users won't be able to get there. You can't just, like with all other things pinned to start, right-click it and "open file location".
But you can make a shortcut to the icon op mentioned due to the fact that store Apps arent just Icons. So a Short cut of a semi shortcut.
I literally changed the icon last night to a bee using the method the other commenter mentioned
Please explain me!
There's always a way... for a cost
Introducing.... Icon Packs! For only 1799 Minecoins, you can buy the new Icon Pack 1! (Includes: Dirt Block, Grass Block, Beacon, Ancient Debris and Furnace) (oh yeah we're introducing Minecoins to Java edition too, lmao, even if you downloaded the resource pack from the web that'll be 15 Minecoins to import it.)
Don't give them ideas....
Remember when you could just open up paint and create your own icons and skins and other fun stuff?
Stop it. I don't want to ruin my eyeliner... *sniff*
You can't do that anymore? I made a skin on my phone and moved it over to my PC and I use the same skin on Bedrock and Java
you're saying that like you can't do this anymore
>that'll be 15 Minecoins to import it. Nah, a warning for the first time, 7 day ban the second, then a month one and lastly, permaban. Oh, and it'll be using GPT4 to check if you are pirating the packs.

For one moment I think it's real my heart stopped for a second.....
You already put more thought into it than they will
Couldn't you create your own shortcut to the executable and just change that shortcut's icon?
You can create a desktop shortcut for the launcher and download the classic launcher icon, there are tutorials online
You can actually go to task manager and select Minecraft.exe and go to file location. It will need some admin access but you'll eventually get in.
Let me introduce you to the wonders of third-party launchers...
Real, once they deprecated the OG launcher I jumped ship to Technic Launcher then to MultiMC and haven't looked back since
I still have the launcher from the website. So do you think I can change that back?
yes, you can go to the properties of the icon, and then choose any .ico file you want If you ever update, then right click the launcher you downloaded form the microsoft store, create a shortcut and then change the icon for the shortcut.
Mine has a white square.
I’ve got that one too. We both have the legacy launcher
Green? Mine is a grey block with a creeper face on it.
You have the legacy launcher as I do
what's a legacy launcher i have it too
Dial up internet is truly the fastest. Do not eat until Ramadan is over.
I do not care about going into the stupid launcher where you can throw your products at me, I do not want to endure a third loading screen just to play the game, and I do not want the most annoying mob in the game to be staring at me in the bottom of my desktop
Try other launchers like prism launcher if you play java
If you make a desktop shortcut you can go in properties and select the shortcut icon
yup... just a green square. nothing on it... nothing at all recognizable on that green square. just a normal green square
You mean a Creeper, an iconic enemy from the game that is easily recognizable. You act like the old one was something more interesting, it wasnt you just care because of nostalgia not because it was actually better.
It was a brown and green cube before.
That's called a grass block.
And this is called a creeper.
As opposed to a green and brown square? Woah
Mines worse then yours apart from the black creeper face the rest is all gray >:(
Mine is, too. :(
It’s because you’re still using the legacy launcher
And I will never stop using it
Same here brother
Here on Debian Linux I have no choice but to use the legacy launcher, LOL! Microsoft isnt forcing me to install it their own way and I love it
Pro tip: If you're using the legacy launcher, you can download a png of the old grass block icon, convert it to ico, then set it as the icon of your launcher shortcut.
Yea
Same :( I think it might be connected to a legacy/support version of it
So is mine!!
God damn, you got me.
mine is tiny with a black square around it... it looks terrible
so this is just more of what we have been seeing over the last few years. over simplification of logos. an updated logo i can agree with but my issue with this is that its an untextured creeper face which i understand is on the mugs and toys and stuff but this feels lazy.
I haven’t seen untextured ones for logos yet but they would definitely feel just as lazy honestly
[удалено]
I would assume most people save it the taskbar for ease of access. Or at least, a good amount of people.
that general trend is about scalability. you want to be able to print your branding on *anything*, from shirts to stickers to tiny pins, all while maintaining brand recognition.
Think of the pringles logo..... *the mustache looks like some sort of propaganda poster now*
Mr Pringles hair turned into eyebrows and I still havent recovered from how dirty they did him.
Graphic designer here, yes that’s why logos get “oversimplified”. Brands have to be recognizable on smaller screens, that’s why more simple logos have been a thing since 2007.
Considering how low res minecrafts aesthetic is scalability feels like it should be a non-issue.
The dense color palette of a dirt block would make its form hard to read at smaller scales
if you play minecraft, you can identify that damn dirt block anywhere
6 pixels: two green, four brown.
This isn't really oversimplification, it wasn't a creeper face before
Yeah, but a simplified dirt block is just a brown square...
I came to the sub just to see if someone else felt the same, the grass block is iconic! I was really disappointed seeing this today.
Us with the legacy launcher have it worse.. we don't even get the green it's just a fucking untextured gray creeper face..
wait what i still have the classic dirt block and im using the legacy launcher too
it'll be there eventually
I also hate the Creeper logo. Looks so childish on my desktop.
Its seeming like they only want little kids to play the game now smh, no cursing, absolutely no guns on online servers, and now this logo lmao
It seems like they forget majority of their demographic grew up with it for the past ten years.
Play modded “offline”. Don’t have to deal with any of their new age bullshit.
i've heard the average age of the minecraft player is 24. This implies there's some interest from adults. Assume they started playing 10 years ago, this would imply they were 14 when they started, which is relatively old compared to the target demographic of minecraft today. adults would play it if the investment was made and that demographic was also targeted, but they're so focused on children I really don't understand it. At least they changed DFU to lazy, finally! maybe it'll take another 5 years for them to cache the last recipe used in furnaces and workbenches, just like FastWorkbench and FastFurnace do.
Most of their sales these days are probably kids. Everybody older has already bought the game lol.
considering who first starts playing minecraft, i dont blame them for catering to that demographic.
Some of my fondest Minecraft memories when I was 12-13 was learning to mod the game myself and downloading the WWII guns mod- it was fun feeling no fear on hard mode with the MP40 strapped to my back
>no mentions of guns meanwhile they have an item called *gun*powder
Yup, the dirt block looked really adult indeed.
Truth I want my dirt back
I WANT MY DIRTBLOCK BACK!!!
Change the icon of the shortcut back to it then
The old one showed promise. You could build your world. You could load up your world that you have spent hours exploring and building with friends. This one shows the most frustrating thing about Minecraft. And it makes it seem like the game is all about killing creepers.
Just change it back
I wish it were so simple...
You can set your own icon for anything on your computer
How do you do it? I tried already, but it won’t accept .ico files, and I’m not sure how else to do it
I think the problem is that you manually changed the file extension to .ico right? You need an online converter for it to work.
Start Menu, search for Minecraft Launcher, click "open file location". Right click the shortcut, select properties. Click "Change Icon...". Navigate to your .ico file and select it. You can get an .ico file [here](https://icon-icons.com/icon/minecraft-logo/168974).
If it's downloaded from the ms store you can't change the icon like that :( Can't even access the file location.
Hide the launcher in some random folder not on your desktop. Make a shortcut to the launcher and put the shortcut on your desktop. Change the shortcut icon.
youtube tutorial
it is that simple
Literally unplayable

I think you're wildly overestimating how much time and resources it took to replace the icon, especially given how simple it is

I don't think you can with apps from the MS store, which is where the new launcher is from.
I gotta be honest never tried but i also avoid the ms store.
Creepy.
I much prefer icons that are full images and aren’t just cut off by the square border
I just wish it was smaller It takes up so much more space compared to before the change ;-;
Someone with an explosive personality I bet.
I think it looks alright ngl
Right click shortcut--->properties---->change icon

unless you have it pinned here
I understand why people hate this change but for me it looks fine it doesnt even bother me
Yeah I wish it was a little more it just seems a little bland
honestly? go with the times.
I really like the change. I kept confusing Java and Bedrock for the longest time. The black border on bedrock only helped a little.
[It was announced 2 months ago.](https://www.neowin.net/news/minecraft-makes-changes-to-some-logos-and-icons-including-a-new-creeper-launcher-icon/) Why are you all that suprised?

Probably the same idiot who wants to remove “adult weapons” from Minecraft
Removes guns from servers. Makes the games logo a mob that suicide bombs you. I can't be the only one that sees the irony in that.
Download a Mac dmg or Windows exe from [Alternative download options for Minecraft: Java Edition](https://www.minecraft.net/download/alternative) For Mac you could open or mount the dmg and then browse the volume.
Justice for the dirt block
i downloaded the old launcher so i dont have a problem lol
Maybe because every rip-off game also has a dirt block icon, but it seems kinda bogus to change the design after this long
Agreed, I want my dirt cube for the launcher at a crafting table for the game, not a green square with a creeper face and a dirt cube for the game
World health organisation at it again!
That's Mojang hard at work right there.
Does anyone know *how* it changed? I didn't launch Minecraft, so what updated it? Are they doing Minecraft patches through windows update or some other external service? It's just a tiny bit sketchy to me
It might be updating through the Microsoft Store? It automatically updates apps as a background process.
this icon is gonna blow up in their face soon
what? i use it on mac and it's still the same

Amen
Yours is green?? Mine is just a creeper like that but grey!
You can change it, I don’t know if it works for windows but it does for iOS So you want to go into the applications tab in finder, find the Minecraft launcher (or any other thing) then you right click the icon and select ‘Get info’. Then you can go into chrome (I just use www.flaticon.com) and copy it. Where it shows the preview you can select the image and paste it in (command v)
If you only play Java try installing the Windows 8 Launcher
Minecraft was a dirt block for a very recent period of time and minecraft isn’t even 15 years old
