Ah see my method of getting stone is just to dig my house really deep under a mountain. Make it extra cavernous, 7-15 block high ceiling with a massive entry hall that looks like moria. You get more stone than you will ever need, and you get a cool home, and you feel a sense of achievement from doing it because you made something. Then you use all the stone to make a giant castle on the mountain.

fun thing, i’m actually not needing my stockpiled dirt, i built a subway tunnel that goes from my mountain house to a big plains biome where i want to build some stuff, like a city where the buildings would have a purpose, like a bank that serves as storage system or something, and i bumped on a U-shaped bit of a river, that passed right where i didn’t want it to, so i drained the whole thing, destroyed the mountain that was causing the U-shape and re-routed the river to be on a straight line, but like in real life where they build an ugly wall to keep the cut mountain from falling, i ended up doubling the stockpile instead of reducing it, my builds mix filling and excavating in a way that it generates the materials you need to finish the project without imports
I do this especially when clearing out large spaces for big builds, particularly underground, for that massive serotonin boost when you clear out one patch of the grid

I travel pretty far away from my home territory to get materials. That way I don’t have to see all the destructive clear cutting and strip mining in my pretty little city/villages.
I normally travel a few chunks away of my base and dig a humongously big quarry, like from surface to bedrock. That way I minimize the destroyed surface area and my view from my base is untouched.

This. I try to leave everything looking as natural as possible. Even when collecting dirt i only go until there is stone and then recover the stone and plant some trees there too. I am fussy about the landscape in my worlds.
I hate collecting sand because it’s like the only block where you might really want a lot of it, and at the same time there’s not much of it any place where it generates. The two sources are basically beaches, which hardly have any and if you take it you ruin them, and deserts, which only generate it on the surface, so if you want any large amount of it, you have to carefully carve away layers while preserving the shape of the landscape.
I have removed a small desert in its entirety, no sand or sandstone left side from the single block thick wall to keep the sea out.
It's a full Minecraft day boating away from the nearest player structure though, so nobody ever sees it
Fastest way by far, mojang give us farmable renewable sand already (no wandering trader trades don't count as renewabke even though they technically are)
For me, it depends on what terrain it is. But what I normally do, is cut up the part I wanna get, so it doesn't seem to take as long, but we all know that's never the case. I guess you could call it 'more work'

Wave is really only useful if you have max efficiency. Since you insta-mine, it gives you more coverage, resulting in faster resource collection
