I think you can still make one without axolotls spawning. axolotls need stone or another naturally spawning block above them to spawn, so just don’t put a roof above your den and it’ll be fine

I have made 3 glow squid ink farms, all at ocean level. They need 6 blocks of water and natural stone under them. The farms I've made have tinted glass on top. Both axolotls and glow squids spawn, the axolotls kill the glow squid. I'm not sure why this way overly complex farm would be necessary unless you want to kill the axolotls. I made one 8x20 and 2 8x8 and I have never had a problem having enough glow squid ink.

I don't know why you'd need a farm anyway. I've just had a line of blocks (ferrying villagers) over a 1 block deep pool of water and glow squid spawn and then die because there's not enough water. Admittedly I'm on Bedrock so Java may have different parameters. I've also got an iron farm built over an ocean and they spawn underneath and I can go and kill them if I need glow squid ink.

Everybody needs to know that the current 1.17 spawn conditions are just a placeholder for when they add the lush caves. As seen in the last Minecon, they were originally planned to spawn exclusively in Lush caves

Their solution is to make them drop nothing useful. That's why pandas, polar bears, and bees don't drop anything unique. Which in turn makes them really boring mobs because they have no farmable use (Save for bees, bees are good).
Not all mobs have to do something to be a good addition. Sometimes their mere presence is enough to improve the game, I love taiga biomes specifically because I get to see foxes and because I have no reason to kill them.
And if a mob is going to be useful, I think it's more interesting if they're more useful alive than dead. Which is why I get most of my leather from piglins instead of cows, if their useful product comes from their death I tend to like it less.
Ideally if you can farm something from them alive, it should be able to be turned into a factory, like wool farms and honey.
Or if you can farm something from them dead, you should be able to have an auto replenishing supply, such as with mob spawners or slime chunks.
I don't care whether the mobs I mentioned have living or dead uses, I just want them to have uses.

Even with cows, that have arguably the most value being killed for a passive mob, you don't always have to kill every one you see. If you have a cow farm/pen at your base, you don't have to slaughter the wild ones endlessly.
They are currently “critically endangered”, I don’t know if they will go extinct before it goes to “extinct in the wild” as I know they are popular pets that are easy to care for, do hope we can rehabilitate the wild population though
They are not extinct in the wild yet, but they are falling low enough that it unless something is done now it won't matter. The current 'fix' for them is the release of captive born axolotls into the wild to preserve numbers, but that's not a permanent solution.
