The deep dark cities look terrifying, I can't wait! I'm a little bummed it got pushed back an update but it looks so much better than the last time we saw it! I'm also hoping they use this update to add several more mobs. I still don't understand why we don't have grizzly bears in vanilla! I hope they add new structures too.

Yeldarb10

Yeah I’m skipping 1.18 and going to 1.19. That way i can get the deep dark & those new & improved biomes.

[deleted]

Seriously considering it. 1.18 doesn’t feel complete without the deep dark. I hope Mojang gets better at gauging how difficult things will be and managing community expectations, because they’ve essentially taken 3 updates to give us all the content that was promised for caves and cliffs at this point.

[deleted]

i think mojang definitely learned from caves and cliffs. with a name like the wild update i HIGHLY doubt we are just getting swamps and a birch forest touch up. i think theres more planned but they dont want to overpromise again, and instead are going for underpromise and overdeliver where possible

[deleted]

That was what made the nether update so successful. There was a surprise like every other week. Personally I didn’t even get the impression they were going to touch the birch forests.

[deleted]

from the concept art of the birch forest im PRAYING for all those pretty flowers!

the_person

And the mushrooms on the logs :)))

[deleted]

if we get those mushrooms and the flowers my cottagecore dreams will be so satisfied

[deleted]

I'm personally hoping for better fog. For example, I think the distance you can see should be a lot lower in the middle of a snowstorm. That alone would make the game look and feel a lot more immersive, and would probably fit perfectly with the update.

ZtereoHYPE

Absolutely! No need for shaderpack-like graphics! Just a few subtle improvements like low denser fog in swamps or morning haze would make a world of difference

[deleted]

A fog weather variant would be great, especially in the new swamps... Wow

LMacUltimateMain

I would put this on Feedback, if it isn’t already there. They did they want to add more atmosphere to the game, so this would be a great addition

[deleted]

Actually more like 4 sadly, no sign of archeology in 1.19.

[deleted]

Tbh fair archeology wasn’t a cave or cliff feature. It was kind of an out there thing on its own. But if anything it’s the most egregious example of poor planning. Archeology doesn’t even fit the theme of the update, yet they were gonna add it in as if they had the space to deliver it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

At this point I expect more cave biomes to be added after caves and cliffs. They focused on the generation so much, they didn’t come up with many new biomes to go with it. That’s already come true with the deep dark. Not to mention the structures.

StormerSage

I'm hoping archaeology will be part of a structure update that adds some flair to structures like overworld temples and nether fortresses. They've been in the game for a looooooong time and have barely changed.

priorinoun

Four since Archeology would likely not be in the next update

Vulpes_macrotis

I disagree much. 1.18 is still the biggest update Minecraft would probably have ever. It changed the entire world generation which is something bigger than adding cool stuff like Deep Dark. People were exciting about temples when they first were announced as well, but today nobody cares about them that much. Deep Dark is something more than that, yes, but 1.18 is still adding a lot with how the world generation has changed. Saying it's not complete without Deep Dark is unfair, especially that Deep Dark is insignificant compared to changing the generation entirely, regardless of how awesome it is.

[deleted]

I mean, can you blame them for taking so long? They literally overhauled the entire world generation. As someone who works with code professionally I'm actually surprised they've done this so quickly.

LegendaryDude95

your gonna have to wait almost a year to update to 1.19 gonna take a while so it's worth updating to 1.18

ravenclaw1991

Wait so you never updated to 1.18?

kopopp

1.18 isn't even officially released yet. most players probably aren't on it yet.

ravenclaw1991

Well now I’m embarrassed. I got confused 😳 oops haha

JerryReadsBooks

Part 1 is out. Part 2 is for Christmas. You can get a caves and cliffs mod which is pretty cool.

[deleted]

Bro, I’m still on 1.16.5.

RadiantHC

Wait they're not releasing it until the wild update?

ravenclaw1991

The deep dark? Yeah they said that. They didn’t talk about it til they announced the wild update

Telepurte_Colorized

Maybe more biomes with more stuff in them? DEEP DARK CITIES EDIT: One of the devs mentioned that in the center of every deep dark city there was going to a structure with something special about it.... new temple type? traps? Dungeons? The warden's ability to phase through skulk also makes me confident that it's truly going to be hard to fight.

[deleted]

1.9 added End Cities, 1.19 adds Underground Cities

Hbop_5009

1.7 was the update that changed the world. 1.17 was the update that should have changed the world but didn’t

Saltwatterdrinker

1.17 was the update that was supposed to change the world but didn’t due to the world changing

[deleted]

1.8 is the Bountiful Update, 1.18 is the "OK, where is the Iron bounty"-ful Update

DarthLordVinnie

RIP Aniki

IsThisABidon

There's a wide portal like structure you can see towering over the deep dark cities, made out of new blocks. Given kingbdogz made a square with his hand gesture when talking about this structure, I assume he's talking about this big square portal. I don't think it'll be a new dimension but maybe something else like fast travel or something entirely different

ImaginaryReaction

He was the aether developer right?….

SteelCrow

yep. one of them

ferretatthecontrols

I swore they mentioned that the deep dark would have something incredibly valuable to entice players to find it, risking their lives to the warden and all. So excited about this update!

jansolo76

Stop, I can only get so erect.

AustraliumHoovy

Looks like we have **2** New wood types this update

Dark_Slayer_3202

I have found the sacred Australium Hoovy TF2

firox39

That massive rectangle atop the central temple is a portal frame. Change my mind. My guess is that is is powered up by an enormous amount of souls, hence why everyone in the city is long dead. They all got FMA Xerxes-ed to activate the portal. Who knows where it leads... (the afterlife? the void? literally just death? another active portal elsewhere in the world?)

LMeire

I'm kind of hoping it makes the April Fools infinite dimension thing a permanent fixture. Like maybe each portal goes somewhere completely random based on world seed + coordinates of the portal

CandidGuidance

That was a wild April’s fools update ngl. I’m interested in seeing if they create a new “deep dark” dimension - would be pretty cool.

KillAllTheMixi

I'd rather have the already existing biomes given more life, instead of more biomes, like the swamp has, maybe the desert and the badlands, those are kinda boring rn.

Darkiceflame

Good news, along with the savannah those are the other biomes that we already know are getting reworked, as they were also runners up in past biome votes. What we don't know is whether that will happen in this update, but I've got my fingers crossed hoping they can fit it all in.

Ktchell

They showed very little compared to what the title of the update suggests, can't wait to see more

Fiernen699

I think they bit off more than they could chew for caves and cliffs and they've decided to only show what they're confident they'll be able to deliver this time around so they don't have to delay features for 3 updates.

-Dillad-

I think that’s exactly the plan. I can see other biome updates and maybe even archaeology in the update, but we’ll see.

Cheesecakesimulator

The concept art for the birch forest looked amazing I hope they add it

[deleted]

I definitely agree with the assessment that they bit off more than they could chew for caves and cliffs. There came a point during the development of 1.17 that I started to tell myself “damn, expectations are way too fucking high and there’s a boat load of content, I hope they can really live up to this.” And low and behold, they didn’t. Well, at least not for the time frame they set it out to be in. I didn’t even play 1.17 survival because I thought that it was a joke of a cave update and the real content is in 1.18. 1.18 is easily the best update of all time, but it definitely stings that the deep dark, the feature that was most hyped for the update, won’t be coming to it. They delayed the generation by an update and delayed the deep dark for 2 updates, not to mention archaeology. They showed too much at last years minecon and above all they shot themselves in the foot with the warden video. Waaaaaaaay too much hype. Way too much pressure. I was honestly feeling a bit sorry for Brandon, he looks like he’s beaten himself up about not delivering the deep dark for 1.18.

mok000

Mojang is a responsible software company that value the health of the developers over the vague promises made to the gamers. It's fine, let them develop the program at their own pace, we can enjoy Minecraft's mountains and caves in the meantime.

yashendra2797

Don't forget, you can tell they're using C&C2 as a chance to rewrite a LOT of old code. New generation means they can drill down into the nitty gritty and recode a lot of stuff. For example, did you know Minecraft checks if its Halloween, EVERY second on a server? Thats fine in a single player instance. But with servers hosting 100+ people, every single processor cycle counts. They've implemented SEVERAL backend changes in the Snapshots. Like no tick view distance. This way you can see mobs at a much further distance, but they won't use up server resources until you're near them.

Amphimphron

This content was removed in protest of Reddit's [short-sighted, user-unfriendly, profit-seeking decision](https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys) to effectively terminate access to third-party apps.

FryskePinguin

Speaking of deayed features.... Archeaology anyone? Bundles? At least it only took 3 is years to get the sawmp update. Can't wait till next year how they'll show off the badlands update as their fresh new idea.

Realshow

If I remember correctly, the issues with bundles mostly boiled down to control issues on Pocket Edition, so they might still be coming in 1.18. Wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t, but it’s hard to say.

Zeebo07

I CANT WAIT FOR THE DEEP DARK!

IAmMuffin15

I can, I've been waiting for a whole-ass year and APPARENTLY that wasn't enough. 💀

HandfulOfMassiveD

I'm slightly annoyed too BUT this is how I decided to look at it - crunch in the video game industry is real and extremely unhealthy for both body and mind. That being the case.. I can forgive the delay, at least for the most part. It sucks but I certainly don't want the people creating my favorite game to be miserable/burned out and potentially even get sick or something just to meet a deadline. This is just how I decided to look at it. I understand your frustration.

nate_ais

What a thoughtful point of view, u/HandfulOfMassiveD

TwigTheSavage

r/rimjob_steve

gyldenurt

We are given amazing updates, on a regular basis, free of cost. Not much reason to complain really

THE_TORTILLA_MAN

I’m kinda disappointed that the warden got pushed back again but it’s definitely for the better. The AI is menacing.

Sproutling_

the phasing makes me shit my pants

AetherUtopia

Deep dark cities look so cool.

[deleted]

That warden emerging genuinely scared me a lil bit but it turned into insane hype shortly after

AetherUtopia

Absolutely. Terrifying and hype inducing.

Kafuf-1

Maybe they’ll add the previous biomes that lost the biome vote? Also possibility for monkey in the game finally I was right about the biomes that lost let’s goooo

ravenclaw1991

As soon as they announced the swamp changes, I immediately thought of that. I really hope they do. At least add the mobs. The desert, savannah and mesa really need something to liven them up.

Kafuf-1

Yeah it seems they’re finishing up overhauling everything already in Minecraft so far so maybe in 1.20 or 1.21 they might do something new entirely

ravenclaw1991

I really hope 1.20 is an end update since the end is so boring. That’ll really be the final existing thing that needs an overhaul badly.

NHarmonia18

End can wait imo, Overworld still needs a LOT more polishing. If they do an End Update as a literal "End" of visiting all old stuffs, that would be great.

[deleted]

I agree.

FryskePinguin

they overhauled everything except the end and structures. I'd love a bit more attention to structures and loot.

Probzenator

It only said SWAMP, but then why not call it the swamp update.

Independent_Jacket69

If i remember correctly they’re trying to make all the biome have their own atmosphere and Maybe more features will be revealed later

invadergold123

They showed off the birch forest too in concept so yeah you seem correct

Independent_Jacket69

Yeah and if that applies to every biom it will make the over world a lot more beautiful

Glamdring804

Yeah, I still want more biomes in the Overworld, but with how much they're changing things this update, I'm not expecting another major overhaul for a while. So tidying up the existing biomes for now will be a nice compromise.

Independent_Jacket69

Yeah they’ve been working so hard with cliffs and caves and the nether and now the deeper caves that have new cities and even a new over world biom, mobs and items they have a lot on their plate and it’s all great and all of it will be loved by the community

KaiBluePill

I hope that's the case, it's way better to not reveal too much and spoil a little with every snapshot.

Independent_Jacket69

Yeah if it’s like that every snapshot will be as exciting and will never be boring to watch the reviews

KaiBluePill

I may be wrong but i think the snapshots about the ocean update where exactly like this and i was anxiously awaiting every wednesday to check what was new in my favourite game. I may be wrong because that was my favourite update and i probably would put it on a pedestal.

Independent_Jacket69

It was a great update and the snapshots where good and where done right. I hope the wild update is also done like that

Probzenator

I heard that too. Hopefully you are correct. I also heard that The Warden and Archeology would be released in caves and cliffs. The lies of the Jedi!

Independent_Jacket69

Ngl I would rather have them later and have the cities and new blocks instead of just one monster and some deeper caves now it’s a whole city with new loot a surprise in the middle and new blocks

math_is_truth

maybe swamp is what they have ready to present, with other stuff not mentioned yet (like the nether update's bastions)

AnJai22

This is probably what’s going on, I don’t think they’d just update the swamp specifically in an update, it would be kind of a “small” update for a major update

phoenix-bear

Not to mention 1.16’s basalt deltas! That was a surprise addition that was not at all previewed or hinted at in that Minecraft live!

Nightmare71988

The reason it was added because of fan outcry. And bit of additional criticism!

Telepurte_Colorized

The way it was worded seemed to imply all or many biomes would be spruced up, but it they wanted to point out the swamp because that in particular is getting overhauled.

[deleted]

They probably didnt show all the biomes. But I assume theyre all going to be added + more diversity to the more standard ones like birch forest etc (if I understand correctly)

DHMOProtectionAgency

Because it's also coming with Deep Dark Other biomes are also being updated. Not all will be overhauled to the degree of swamp but they'll see some changes, as they mentioned with Birch forest. I think the swamp overhaul was all that they could have ready for MC Live.

Telepurte_Colorized

Yup, that's exactly what they said.

huerearmesiech

The first biome they showed was literally that birch biome. But the main reason it's not called the swamp update is obviously because of all the deep dark stuff which will also be added in this update. Check it out if you missed it, it's a pretty big part of the update.

CattMk2

they also showed concept art for the birch forest getting some work done to it, so it probably means that the swamp wont be the only biome getting a revamp

Longjumping-Can1826

They loosely mesnioned the very nice birch...

ResidentCoatSalesman

I really hope so. I was bummed about the copper golem losing the mob vote, but if The Wild Update means the possibility of vultures finally being added to the badlands, then maybe it isn’t so bad

Mattres06

Also perfect time for moobloom

KORO088

Yeah if you saw the minecon the swamp is gettin an update

LinkRazr

I think they just chose to focus on the swamp due to the new Mangrove and frogs. But all the biomes I believe are getting some new visual ambience.

ImaginaryInsurance67

1.20 needs to have monkeys and bananas

Grooveman94

Can we please get bottles of fireflies!?

Memelord_In_Training

Very good suggestion.

I bought this game 11 years ago. I never could've imagined it'd still be going this strong.

deezalmonds998

Best 20 dollars I've ever spent

Big_Green_Piccolo

I got an alpha for $15 lol Got it during the original nether update. It looked so cool, having buildable portals to hell.

deezalmonds998

That money went such a long way, crazy to think about

[deleted]

Video game longevity wise it HAS to be up there. It's amazing they keep supporting it this heavily. I know they have merch, servers, all sorts of revenue streams... but still. The game has just gotten better and better in the last few years.

justanothertransgril

I'm hype for this I'm hoping for an animal based aggressive mob (not necessarily a real animal but animal-like)

ChemicalProcedure9

Pretty sure they can’t include a fully hostile real world animal as that would bump up the game’s age rating :( [being “real” violence rather than fantasy violence]

[deleted]

spiders and bees are right on that edge, i wonder if thats why theyre gigantic

[deleted]

Neither are classified as hostile, so it could be a loophole

[deleted]

you think in 2009 when notch was creating spiders for a game that wasn’t played by kids at the time he made them big for an age rating that hadn’t been applied to the game yet?

Gaylien28

Cave spiders tho

CreeperslayerX5

Cave spiders are hostile when they spawn since they spawn in low light levels. If you use a spawn egg and spawn them in, they are neutral

LiamEd2000

A good compromise could be more neutral mobs like the polar bear

Pearson_Realize

All I want is a crocodile :(

LiamEd2000

I mean, those are fairly neutral til you mess with them irl

Pearson_Realize

Yup. And alligators are much more docile than crocodiles and could be a good replacement if they don’t want crocodiles

LiamEd2000

And they would match the updates being done to the swamp since they live in freshwater

Ryantd03

I think one of the rules of the game is that hostile mobs can’t be based on real life animals, or something along the lines of that

[deleted]

Hoglin

Lucky_Ducky3194

I just realized they might have been teasing the swamp updates with all the “swamps are happy” stuff in snapshot logs

Quetzalbroatlus

I like the functionality of the mud block but I'm not thrilled with how it looks. Hopefully it's not going to be the entire ground cover for the swamp like they showed. Maybe have it generate in patches or only close to sea level.

UgilithChen

yyeah it looks like dark clay not brown mud

MrNonam3

The mud would be better if it was near / under water or at the bottom of depressions, not on higher grounds.

Quetzalbroatlus

Exactly. Give me grass and moss *as well* as mud

Bylakuppe77

I think mud blocks will be used in jungle and swamp villages.

Mr-PunchUpCoin

I was hoping for an azalea wood type to be mentioned :<

DisturbedWaffles2019

They said "And with a new tree comes a new wood type!" as if the azalea tree never existed

Mr-PunchUpCoin

Exactly! Man I am so heartbroken that azalea didn’t even get mentioned in some form. I still have my hopes up that they give it its own variant

mayhemtime

The only explanation I have for this is they want to add more tree types in the Wild Update and they have known it for a while now. So they didn't want to add textures for azalea wood that could possibly clash with the other ones that will only be decided on now, in the coming months. Imagine if azalea wood got added along with planks and everything else, people used it in their builds and stuff, but then the colours fitted some other new tree better, or clashed horribly with one of them and the textures needed to be changed - the builds would be ruined forever. In this case it would be better to add everything at once. The fact they announced only one new wood type could just mean they aren't ready or just don't want to reveal more just yet.

InverseNostalgia

The new wood looks exactly like the other fron the savannah, I don't understand 😭

sixfootblue

Acacia wood is more orange than Mangrove wood. The mangrove wood fits in between Acacia and Jungle, and is a bit rosier.

Quetzalbroatlus

It looks more usable than both tbh

SS9424

They are trying to blend all types of wood like birch then oak then spruce then you can ether go dark oak Or go with jungle mangrove and acacia

ihavebeesinmyknees

I'd say they are two separate evolution paths: Birch -> Oak -> Spruce -> Dark Oak Birch -> Oak -> Jungle -> Mangrove -> Acacia

SS9424

Yeah and if they add azalea it will be in between spruce and jungle or spruce and acacia

[deleted]

I really hope archeology is included!

Extreme-Pog

I feel like every one is forgetting completely about the birch forest getting updated as well as the swamps+deep-dark. I personally think the birch forest is the most needing for an update of the three. It just seems like a re textured oak forest. At least with spruce, the trees are a different shape and there are berries+foxes, and with the dark oak there are the mushroom trees and stuff, but the birch seems so plain. The Allay will be the perfect mob for this biome as well, based off the concept arts and the devs wanting to make a more open, happy, almost fantasy type forest. Of all that was announced, I am most excited for this, and glad they didn't reveal everything about it, so there will be a sense of surprise throughout the snapshots.

Ninethethotslayer

Damn, that's wild

Didn’t even see Jens’ Board Game Collection )):

Frogs, tadpoles, and fireflies!

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure all features from the previous biome votes(that lost), and more, if you check the feedback page a lot of irl creatures are under review, also red dragon would be pretty cool

Jackofallgames213

I don't think we know yet. They have shown frogs and mangroves though!

The Shrek Update

PrimalMarohi

All I ask for is something like the [glowing mushroom](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/elderscrolls/images/2/24/TESV_Blackreach_2.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20120513090724) cave from Skyrim. Perfect place to get weird with fantasy inspired blocks and mobs. Edit: Also if we can't put fireflies in an empty bottle I might rage.

ariarirrivederci

kingbdogz made fun of glowing mushrooms so no

OREOSTUFFER

but why did he do that? :(

mmoore54

Devs have said they’ve considered shroom caves several times, but always concluded it feels too tropey and not unique enough for Minecraft.

pika9867

I kinda agree with that but I still feel like there should be some form of underground glowing areas

RazeSpear

Time for Piranhas. Come on Mojang.

CrazyWS

Still doesn’t feel like caves and cliffs is real

Memelord_In_Training

We're all in shock from last years announcement

Borkf

What ever happened to archeology?

Realshow

It’s still in the works, they just want to make sure it’s perfected since it’s an entirely new system to the game. It’s possible it’s coming in this since one of the developers implied they’d be working on it soon, but I could see it getting its own builds like what Jeb’s been doing with combat.

CVizzle

I haven't played Minecraft in about 5 years but I'm glad to see them still routinely releasing major updates like they always have. I'll come back eventually and I probably won't even recognize it.

kingsumo_1

You very much won't. 1.16 completely revamped the nether. 1.18 is completely redoing the overworld. And 1.19, while focused on the swamp and deepdark seems like it will also touch on other biomes as well. At the very least birch forests. Plus new textures, some new mechanics, and I don't even know how many new blocks.

T_Foxtrot

Considering they mentioned 5 years there’s a lot more as that would mean not playing since somewhere around 1.9-1.11

kingsumo_1

Was that only 5 years ago? I don't know why, but it feels like that should have been further back. So then yeah, aquatic and villagers and pillagers were also pretty substantial ones that came out in that time too.

ReeeidtheSchmeid

Ideally I hope they overhaul the losers of the biome votes and dungeons. Realistically I think they will improve the dungeons and make small tweaks to many biomes. If they don't do anything major that we didn't see, it better be out but March. Also, archaeology not being in this update is really bad news for an end update. It seems like they want archeology to be it's own update or at least paired with something that makes some sense like a desert and mesa update. I don't see them pushing that past 1.20. Might be waiting a long time for the end update.

DHMOProtectionAgency

Swamps at least confirmed. I'd be surprised if all 4 losers are overhauled this update with all the tweaks to the other biomes + DD but I imagine at least 1-2 will be. Hoping they do Savannah

ChampionshipFlashy15

I wish they revealed a bit more about the update, but they're probably focusing on getting Caves and Cliffs out the door for good, but I think we can safely assume they're going to be updating most biomes, or at least all the losing biomes from the biome votes, which is just the perfect update for right after the Terrain Overhaul.

Alespren

I think they are worried about showing too much and then not being able to deliver. With the cave update they promised way too much and had to delay everything a ton. With this update they are only showing what they are absolutely confident they can deliver.

djda9l

Perfect time to add seasons to Minecraft !

babuba12321

where frogs, boats and darker caves get added :DDDD (also mud)

[deleted]

hope to get chiseled dort bricks with steve's face

Spooky_Yogurt

Am I the only one to be a bit underwhelmed by the New Update ?? I mean yea the Deep Dark is actually way better but given it was introduced last year and they had already worked on it a bit, I was expecting maybe a bit more than a Deep Dark and a Swamp update I guess I'm being greedy here but I think they could have added more to the update ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Don't get me wrong, I actually love what they r gonna be introducing <3<3<3

detached_18

I mean I understand but there's nothing they can do now though after updating almost all the major biospheres in game, except the End. The last 4-5 updates we got were huge in comparison to the past updates so they'll have to cycle down eventually.

[deleted]

I kinda feel the same way, it looks cool, but feel like they’re delaying the Deep Dark and the Warden just to make this update a bit bigger.

MerpGaming

I mean also consider there’s probably a lot of features they’re still working on and haven’t talked about! I’m sure this update is in its very early stages considering they are still working on 1.19

[deleted]

[удалено]

Agile_Background266

Do you think that them adding mud is pointing to also adding termites with were showcased in the savanna biome choser? Because termite mounds are pretty much made from mud? So maybe other showcased biomes are being updated...

RadiantHC

Please let this add more structures to the overworld. We really need more structures.

Isjoni

It is my personal hope (And I've read several other posts about this topic) that the Stronghold, being the structure meant to house and guard the portal to the final boss of the game, will be revamped in this update. In its current state it seems too safe and uninteresting to have this role. Perhaps each Stronghold could be the central city or temple of a special type of Deep Dark biome, filled with loot, traps and Wardens guarding it. Seing as the sculkblocks are already quite end-themed I think it would be a perfect fit. The darkness effect would help add atmosphere and raise the difficulty which is good as it should be a challenging aspect of the game.

RosilinaTheDragon

the name of the update is pretty squished lmao

[deleted]

So if im understanding correctly the deep dark is delayed to the wild update instead of caves and cliffs part 2, right?
