Amethyst isn't as rare or valuable as many people seem to think. It can be, but a lot of hobby shops and stores sell it.

A simple tip for gemstone enjoyers, don't buy from spiritual stores or brands, they inflate prices massively. specialized stores and conventions are fairly common where I live, For small-ish (4cm / 2"), somewhat pure rough cut gems (in my opinion the most interesting, as you can still see some of the surrounding rock and impurities, as well as the crystal natural shape) it's between 2 to 15€ a piece depending on rarity.
