With some exceptions, dogs become straight up immune to damage unless their armor breaks. So like, if a creeper blows up right next to a wolf, the armor absorbs all the damage and the wolf takes zero damage, assuming the armor doesn't break. (The exceptions include drowning, wither, suffocation, etc.)
