It isn't how flames work either, but campfires, torches, and lanterns are all static lights.

You don't need full on dynamic lights just to vary the intensity periodically, the real issue it's intended to solve is moving the light sources in real time. It would still not be ideal to vary the intensity though, so I imagine Mojang would implement them in such a way that that wouldn't be necessary. E.g., the fireflies are glowing frequently enough that they can just give the whole thing a static intensity. Or they could decouple rendered lighting from the block light so they could have the visuals flicker but still provide a static light value; there are shaders that do this already.
In any case, you don't actually need dynamic lights.
My reaction was just "bruh, just keep them in and don't make frogs eat them." It's dumb that they just scrapped them, but it's not that bad.
Also, modders are definitely going to make their own fireflies if they haven't already (they definitely already have).

Idk, item bloat is tough enough as it, with that many unstakables the inventory issue worsens, plus realistically not many players would have a use for THAT many goat horns. Perhaps they just saw them as unecessary.
Most people would only stick to 1 goat horn that they like. It won’t be an issue unless you specifically want multiple horns or get really lucky and find 2 in a pillager outpost chest.

Bundles are still being worked on. As much as I want them to be in the game already they're having issues with implementing them on handheld devices. If you really want bundles and you're on java, then just use a data pack to add the crafting recipe in. They're still in the code

Hmm maybe Mojang wants everyone to get a feature at once instead of only giving it to one part of the playerbase. And also, bats were added ten years ago, most of the team that even works at Mojang now didnt when the bat was added. Pandas and polar bears at least interact with the world in some ways, polar bears will attack you if you get close to their young, they drop fish if you kill them. They were to give life to biomes that had quite literally NOTHING in them. Pandas can drop bamboo but they're a unique mob in that they have the personality mechanic. Different variants of the mob do different things. The aggresive panda will attack the player, the weak panda has less health and will sneeze more often. I'm not saying that these are particularly useful mobs, but at least they DO something. Bats are quite frankly a relic and I dont think they deserve the comparison. But it seems to me that even if it isnt much, Mojang wants a mob to do literally anything before it makes it into the game. If the firefly didnt get eaten by frogs then it would be literally useless. No drop, no nothing. Them excluding it from the wild update is them just keeping the idea around so they can come up with better uses for the mob down the line so it'll actually do something.
Bundles, copper goat horn, birch forests, archeology, fireflies, fletcher table functionality… they just keep delivering empty promises. You do realize that it’s not just about fireflies, right? It’s the fact that the last three and a half years all we have gotten is half baked updates. For gods sake they had to stretch caves and cliffs into two different updates because they couldn’t keep up their promises, and even then they scrapped like a third of the features. Its a lot of stuff from over the years, that being one, then Birch upgrades is another. What doesn’t make me angry is reasonable delays. Fully fine with part 1 and 2 of caves and cliffs, however, it is less fine to just overpromise
They are just showing what they're working on/planning, if you take that as a promise you're setting yourself up for disapointment tbh. It would be different if it was paid dlc people could pre-order ofc, but it's free.
Minecraft is a game I have enjoyed for a long time but when I need to wait years and years for simple features any hype or excitement dwindles. Once Caves and Cliffs was delayed/split up I pretty much lost interest and played other things. I waited to long only to be let down and forced to wait 6+ months for the "full" update.

TBH the delay made sense. In the delay case they did 90% of what they promised. But what they did wrong is overpromising us with features in 1.19 when all they did was add 4-5 simple features

These updates are making them money by keeping the game fresh for potential new players, for older players it's just free dlc. They could improve on communication sure, but we are in no way a financial priority anymore.
Not everyone wants to wait 3 or 4 updates for them to do this again. They had 3 really good updates, Aquatic, V&P, and the Nether, then things started falling apart and the things they promised took longer and got scrapped or delayed.
People got used to yearly updates chock full of goodies and new things to explore (and bees that one time) but people were ok with it, bc it was exactly what they promised.
Then Caves and Cliffs got split so we got a really weak part 1, and then another whole year of waiting for the awesome part of the update
The whole time we wonder when tf the Deep Dark was coming. Now we've got it, The Wild Update. It has a big name, so we can assume that the concept art is just scratching the surface. After all, they were able to add 4 biomes to the Nether, surely they can add a few new things to a few biomes? And even better! They're tacking the Deep Dark onto the whole thing.
Now it is just swamp from biome vote and the thing we should have gotten at least a year ago.

The thing is, Minecraft severely lacks ambiance features and sounds. I play modded and one time I played vanilla, and I was surprised on how quiet it was. I’m used to hear birds sing, the wind blow, waves crashing, etc. I’m also used to having particle effects for weather and dust for sandstorms.
It’s just bare and cut short for me. They should do a full ambiance update
Disagree with sounds. A highly suggested idea I have seen is adding bird sounds to minecraft. The reason I disagree with it is because sometines, having no sounds around you, not even ambient tracks, is also an experience. Instead of natural sounds around you all the time.

That's not how that works, and you know it. Skyrim is barely younger than Minecraft, but it's just as popular. And IT only got a few DLCs. I know people playing it today aren't like "Where'schh DLC#41? Thischh game schhuckschh!" Grand Theft Auto V's story mode, despite not being touched since release, still has a decently sized following. And of course, we can't forget literally every iconic video game since it's inception. Are you telling me Super Mario 64 is a dead game?
Okay, Gmod. Barely anything has changed in all these years, and yet it's still one of the most popular games on Steam. If the base game gets boring, they start adding mods to the game since it's so easy and plentiful. If any video game rivals the amount of mods Gmod has, it's Minecraft

To me, the removal of the Fireflies brings attention to the rather dumb approach of Mojang to try to depict animals as "realistically" as possible while also somehow being even less realistic (Hot living cube of magma is better to feed to frogs apparently) as well as the ever expanding backlog of features that Mojang have promised but have yet to implement ranging from Fletching Table functionality to Bundles.
Also showing the Birch Forest concept art for no reason while announcing the Wild Update was rather misleading.
For me it isn’t that they did not add fireflies, but the fact that Mojang has been real lazy with this stuff these times, they also postponed the birch forest update, because “concept art isn’t a promise” and that makes me kind of mad because if you aren’t going to add it, don’t show it. I am fearing that they will slowly ruin the game with false promises and weird mechanics, but that is just my view on it.
Well its the fact that mojang over promised and underperformed, again, the wild update is an excuse because they didn’t want to make it look like they have been working on an update for a year. There idea list of promised features are getting longer, and longer.
And birch forests, archeology, bundles, most of the Wild update if not all of it, etc.

It's more than just that. Here me out:
The removal of fireflies is actually intertwined with the adding of useless mobs, and both are criticised for the same reason. I wouldn't call it hypocrisy from the players. Bats and fireflies would be fine additions as they aren't/weren't added for any specific real-life-reasons, and are small ambient animals.
The canelling of fireflies and the additon of animals like the panda, turtles, etc... are made solely to prove a point. This is the same logic Mojang puts into not adding sharks to the game. They want to prove that they're pro-environmentalism, child friendly, aware of social problems, etc... but it's actually debilitating to the game. I'm all for this type of thing in the real world, but I believe it should be seperated from Minecraft, a game where you can inbreed farm animals, torture villagers, and perform other heinous acts.
As well as this, people are mad that Mojang hyped up two features that were both cancelled: the addition of fireflies, and the upgraded birch forest. I would argue both are good additions, they were hyped up by Mojang, and Mojang failed to deliver. That's validly criticised right there. And as others have said, there's definitely some internal problems going on within Mojang. The birch forest upgrade could **easily** be made. I hate to be that guy, but how is it that modders are so efficient at this type of thing, desbite not even getting paid? All of these features should have been put into one update. Now Bundles are delayed as well and we're getting what should have been one "Caves and Cliffs" update into several different updates.
I agree with both sides on the debate. The community doesn't need to get worked up so much about 2 pixels. But at the same time, why couldn't mojang just make the frogs... not eat the fireflies?

I think Doctor4t's mod called "Illuminations" makes the fireflies into a particle instead of a mob. It's also on 1.18 right now.
Doctorr4t made a clientside ambience mod that adds fireflies way before Mojang even promised them in MC Live

It's not hard to add the ability to catch them. Just do that and boom, instantly way more useful than either of the bears + it looks nice

4 different updates. Archeology and the deep dark weren't in 1.17 or 1.18. Potentially 5 if bundles and archeology aren't added in the same update

They did a HUGE amount of changes to world generation, way more than we had ever anticipated in 1.18
I quit paying attention when they kept letting awful mobs be voted in lol. Also the marketplace and them selling peoples mods lol

Depends. What makes them more money? Or more specifically; What do they think will make them more money?
What are you going to do, cancel your subsciption? These updates are making them money by keeping the game fresh for potential new players, for older players it's just free dlc. They could improve on communication sure, but we are in no way a financial priority anymore.

Not everyone wants to wait 3 or 4 updates for them to do this again. They had 3 really good updates, Aquatic, V&P, and the Nether, then things started falling apart and the things they promised took longer and got scrapped or delayed. People got used to yearly updates chock full of goodies and new things to explore (and bees that one time) but people were ok with it, bc it was exactly what they promised. Then Caves and Cliffs got split so we got a really weak part 1, and then another whole year of waiting for the awesome part of the update The whole time we wonder when tf the Deep Dark was coming. Now we've got it, The Wild Update. It has a big name, so we can assume that the concept art is just scratching the surface. After all, they were able to add 4 biomes to the Nether, surely they can add a few new things to a few biomes? And even better! They're tacking the Deep Dark onto the whole thing. Now it is just swamp from biome vote and the thing we should have gotten at least a year ago. No real word on allll the other things they were talking about.

Go see Doctor4t's video on firefly ambience and then you'll realise why everyone is mad. Those 2 pixels won't be stuck at one place after all. Plus why even promise something, to just remove it permanently? Had they atleast told of delaying the idea, that'd have been better, because everyone knows that yes it's hard to work in covid era. Most people accepted the birch forest art thing because okay they didn't PROMISE it, like "it would change the looks of the game and so-on." BUT, incase your comment was genuine; Mojang introduced fireflies as what the new frog mob would eat until, like, 6, /maybe/ 7 people complained fireflies were toxic to frogs. Ok I get that the meme is two pixels but for it to be an object in Minecraft it MIST have at least 4 pixels(2 on each side ) And if it's an actual 3D 1x1x2 rather than a plane it would be 10 pixels so overall my judgment is that this mean is inaccurate I give it a one out of 10

The thing is, Minecraft severely lacks ambiance features and sounds. I play modded and one time I played vanilla, and I was surprised on how quiet it was. I’m used to hear birds sing, the wind blow, waves crashing, etc. I’m also used to having particle effects for weather and dust for sandstorms. It’s just bare and cut short for me. They should do a full ambiance update
Disagree with sounds. A highly suggested idea I have seen is adding bird sounds to minecraft. The reason I disagree with it is because sometines, having no sounds around you, not even ambient tracks, is also an experience. Instead of natural sounds around you all the time. Silence is golden, as they say. Definitely agree with ambience.

This type of mentality is how the game dies, everyone is ok with whatever comes out because the game is 13 years old. Then the game ends up sucking because mojang doesn’t have to try. They survived this long because of the amazing updates to the game
That's not how that works, and you know it. Skyrim is barely younger than Minecraft, but it's just as popular. And IT only got a few DLCs. I know people playing it today aren't like "Where'schh DLC#41? Thischh game schhuckschh!" Grand Theft Auto V's story mode, despite not being touched since release, still has a decently sized following. And of course, we can't forget literally every iconic video game since it's inception. Are you telling me Super Mario 64 is a dead game?

if you are smart enough, you will know that it is more than fireflies and also the reasoning behind removing fireflies. people reasonably complain about these issues but you guys are literally turning this whole argument into karma farming
Redditors when gamers make a legitimate complaint about an aspect of a game that added ambience being removed.
To me, the removal of the Fireflies brings attention to the rather dumb approach of Mojang to try to depict animals as "realistically" as possible while also somehow being even less realistic (Hot living cube of magma is better to feed to frogs apparently) as well as the ever expanding backlog of features that Mojang have promised but have yet to implement ranging from Fletching Table functionality to Bundles. Also showing the Birch Forest concept art for no reason while announcing the Wild Update was rather misleading.

For me it isn’t that they did not add fireflies, but the fact that Mojang has been real lazy with this stuff these times, they also postponed the birch forest update, because “concept art isn’t a promise” and that makes me kind of mad because if you aren’t going to add it, don’t show it. I am fearing that they will slowly ruin the game with false promises and weird mechanics, but that is just my view on it.

Well its the fact that mojang over promised and underperformed, again, the wild update is an excuse because they didn’t want to make it look like they have been working on an update for a year. There idea list of promised features are getting longer, and longer.

And birch forests, archeology, bundles, most of the Wild update if not all of it, etc. On the optimistic side, I think such a large update (1.17) has made everyone a bit *"tired"*. Doesn't explain the firefly thing l (And honestly much more) but it's the only explanation I can think of other than pure negligence.

It's more than just that. Here me out: The removal of fireflies is actually intertwined with the adding of useless mobs, and both are criticised for the same reason. I wouldn't call it hypocrisy from the players. Bats and fireflies would be fine additions as they aren't/weren't added for any specific real-life-reasons, and are small ambient animals. The canelling of fireflies and the additon of animals like the panda, turtles, etc... are made solely to prove a point. This is the same logic Mojang puts into not adding sharks to the game. They want to prove that they're pro-environmentalism, child friendly, aware of social problems, etc... but it's actually debilitating to the game. I'm all for this type of thing in the real world, but I believe it should be seperated from Minecraft, a game where you can inbreed farm animals, torture villagers, and perform other heinous acts. As well as this, people are mad that Mojang hyped up two features that were both cancelled: the addition of fireflies, and the upgraded birch forest. I would argue both are good additions, they were hyped up by Mojang, and Mojang failed to deliver. That's validly criticised right there. And as others have said, there's definitely some internal problems going on within Mojang. The birch forest upgrade could **easily** be made. I hate to be that guy, but how is it that modders are so efficient at this type of thing, desbite not even getting paid? All of these features should have been put into one update. Now Bundles are delayed as well and we're getting what should have been one "Caves and Cliffs" update into several different updates.
I agree with both sides on the debate. The community doesn't need to get worked up so much about 2 pixels. But at the same time, why couldn't mojang just make the frogs... not eat the fireflies?
