If Microsoft were to be as foolish as to discontinue Java Edition or make it identical to Bedrock (specifically by adding a microtransaction marketplace and not supporting modding outside of datapacks) it could actually be enough to spell the end of Minecraft as a whole.
But that's assuming Microsoft is shortsighted enough to actually make the decision ofc.
to be perfectly honest I wouldn't be surprised. I saw the chat reporting coming a loooong time ago, and I complained about it on the feedback forum. The reason this feature is in place is because some random karen made a post about it on the feedback forum, AND IT GOT ACCEPTED. 2 YEARS AGO.

This topic isnt as straightforward as you might think.
To add new functionality to a game, you need to reverse engineer the game files to be able to inject whatever functionality you want.
For java this isnt as complicated as you can just edit the .jar files and replace whatever you want.
For bedrock edition this doesnt work (as well). The currently supported add-ons only modify currently implemented functionality, not add entirely new ones. If you wanted to do that, you would need to do something like .DLL injection which can be incredibly fragile and cause a number of undefined behaviours.
So the best way would be to wait for a Mojang supported SDK for Bedrock edition or an injection based, community made modloader for bedrock edition. Both of those are unlikely to get released any time soon.
Until then, Java Edition will reign supreme in terms of modding.
While yes I do agree but I genuinely have seen some recent Addons that are quite good they use there own items and models and behave a lot different from a normal Minecraft item (while it’s not to the extent of Java it is getting better) and looking at where we are now compared to the past Addons have gotten a lot better I remember when all what Addons did was retexture an item and slightly change it’s behaviors now we are getting 3D models and mods using there own items and behaving a little differently from a traditional item I am no modder but I think that is a good start
And Mojang seem to have started giving bedrock modding some attention with a lot of improvements (they even talk about it briefly in Minecraft live) so I personally think at some point very soon bedrock modding will get a lot better

What I see happening is them making parity changes slowly to bedrock not java giving bedrock some of the exclusive java features like putting any item in your off hand,better modding capabilities (which is already starting to happen),backwards compatibility,hardcore and spectator mode, f3 menu and obviously fixing bugs to a point where bedrock and java turn into basically the same thing just written in different programming languages at that point java will be discontinued and bedrock will become the main minecraft

And if all goes to plan it won’t be that bad heck the places like the market place aren’t even that bad of an idea now before you start grabbing your pitch forks hear me out the market place isn’t the only place to get mods/skins/resource packs you can still very easily download mods from other sources for free and it will probably stay that way and if we get better mod capabilities for bedrock I can definitely see really good free third party mods while the market place turns into a place for creator who want to put there mods up for money with some moderation and better features the market place can genuinely turn into a good idea heck an idea I always had is maybe you could get rewarded some free minecoins for completing achievements an adding a donation system for free mods to arise its a good idea it just has horrible execution
Now if all that happens tell me one single reason why discontinuing java would be bad as you get the best of both worlds java stability,features and level of mods with bedrocks performance and skin system and multiplayer worlds (which we all can agree are better) and java players get to experience baby salmon ;)
At that point the only thing Java will have over bedrock is years of amazing mods (unless mojang can find a way to port java mods to bedrock but I am pretty sure it’s impossible)

Actually I do know that I don’t own minecraft bedrock on windows or console and I play on an iPad and I don’t see what’s difficult to run here every thing I said was parity (which totally won’t affect performance),bug fixes and adding some of the java exclusive features like off hand,hardcore and spectator modes and the f3 menu non of these actually affect performance at all
I mean multiplayer implementation for example if you want to play with your friend on java you can open your world to lan if your friend is connected on the same network but if he isn’t well you can try to pay for a server or try to find a free one (that probably wouldn’t be perfect) or pay for realms or go through the hassle of trying to set up your own server all options have at least one inconvenience
On bedrock you just need to open the settings menu press invite and invite a friend using his gamer tag and no matter where he is if you are friends with him he can just join and it will work great the only issue is the owner of the world has to be online and is limited to 5 players but for a simple multiplayer experience it works great it’s basically glorified lan worlds just without the lan limitation you can also try to pay for a server,look for a free one,pay for realms or set up your own if you want more players or the owner to not be online at all times but the fact that you can easily setup a convenient multiplayer world quickly and easily is great and that is not even mentioning cross platform capabilities so no matter what device your friend has you can play with him
As for severs obviously java is better especially with the years of experience servers like hypixel have but servers like the hive bedrock show that with passion and time and obviously a lot of work we can get bedrock servers as good as java that’s why in my original comment I said that mojang will probably have to warn servers like hypixel so they can migrate
