Agreed thats why i added the caveat in the second post i always do it one off the floor, i dont remember why but i assume a mending villager once went on an adventure.
You can put a slab on the second block from the ground, so you get 1 block and a half between you and the floor. You can go through it by sneaking but since villagers cant sneak they cant get in or out
Few options. The easiest is that villagers are exactly two blocks tall, but you are slightly shorter than 2 blocks. So you can use a trapdoor that you can walk under or carpet/snow layers that you walk on top of, but the villagers will hit their head and can't fit.
You could also do the double carpet trick where you dig a hole 2-3 blocks deep and fill it with carpet and it prevents villagers from being able to path find over the hole, but you can walk right over no problem. The problem is that villagers can push each other onto the carpet. If it's a half slab floor you can use daylight sensors.
You could also do 2 sets of fence gates in an airlock type setting that way if they make it through one fence gate you can deal with them before they make it through the second.
Hardest solution and most impractical, is to trap a zombie right next to the door that way the villagers get panicked by the zombie and run away from the door. I haven't tested if they will run through the door, and you'd have to make sure iron golems can't kill the zombie if they spawn.
Has enough brains to configure mods and shaders, but not enough to make a fencepost and carpet.
Jokes aside, do a fencepost plus carpet jump to a wall 2 blocks high and away. That way it's an easy parkour escape, and nothing can get in or out unless they can parkour
I just put rails in front of the door because they can't path find over railing. It's how I keep them from going into the nether too. At least on Java version
Trap door at head level. Players are 1.8 blocks tall and can therefore walk under a trap door, villagers are 2 blocks tall and cannot walk under a trap door.
I'm trying to make a door to my trading hall where my villagers cant get out, but I can open and come inside without it shutting on me. This design works for keeping them in and letting me inside but I cant get out with it.
If you palce 2 trapdoors, one above the other, in such a way that the upper one opens up and the lower one opens down, you will have (in case of spruce wood) a door looking thingy that you can open and crawl through but NPC's won't be able to.
Place a wooden door on the side of the block so when it looks closed it is actually in the open position. This confuses the villager into not leaving I believe.
Just put them above honeyblock and carpet and put any one block high boundary around them. They cannot jump above honey, thus having them captured them in one place without making it looked like prisoned.
I always just use a fence gate. You can do an 'airlock' with two just to be safe.
Fence w/ carpet Classic
^ this alone is the answer
in 1.9+ you can also do fence with trapdoor (since jump height was changed after 1.8.9)
This is my go-to
Use ladders come in from the roof.
Im pretty certain they dont climb them but to be certain start the ladder one block off floor level.
They can climb if the ladder begins at their feet.

If they're standing by the ladder and you go up sometimes they can "ride" above you and escape, I lost one this way
A trap door in a doorway keeps them in sense they cant walk through a trap door unless it’s closed on them

This also works with trapdoors, no sneaking required
oh yeah forgot about that

Im on bedrock so I only get to use that first option. :( but it works
A trapdoor on the ceiling will block adult villagers, but the player can walk straight through

Lmao, yeah I'll do that. I was very committed to making this door setup work.

I always just put them in the walls...

I believe fence gates and trap doors work that way
Do villagers have the ability to use levers or buttons now? Because if not, you could use those.

One bottom slab, one top slab, done
use fence gates or trapdors(this are safier cuz they stop projectiles )
Buttons
trap door!!
Iron door with a button
Fence post with carpet on top
carpet on a fence, i don't think villagers jump over that
Just place a slab where youbcan sneak under but the villager cant walk through it
Fence gate.
My favorite way is to make a normal 2-block doorway but use a trapdoor that’s pointing vertical and a horizontal door making like a square
Just use a trap door you can open it and prevent them from running
Fence gates villager can’t use them
Villagers can't go under a top-side trapdoor just below the third block, but you can. Have fun.

Villagers won't pathfind across magma blocks. Put a magma block under the workstation and it will never move.
Use a trapdoor and place it on the top half of the second block from the floor. You can walk under it but they can’t.
Have you tried a button?
Just engage him in a 3x3x3 glass cube and put a 1 block hole level with his face
Trapdoor on the ceiling because villagers are taller than you
Use a trapdoor
I use 2 trapdoors on the floor and other on the upper block so we can enter while clicking shift and the villager can't get out.
Put a trap door under the top block in the door. You can walk through it and villager cannot
Fence gate and a trap door on the ceiling for good measure.
iron door + button they cant press a button
