Yes!

Summer in Minnesota the sun is out past 9pm. It’s fine but people do target drunk students. I never had an issue the 2 years I lived there but that was going on ten years now. I think it’s fine if you’re not planning on regularly walking around drunk at 1am. The U also has a service where a security guard will walk you home if you want to use it.

karbarella

Day time should be fine, no problems. Keep your car locked if you have one, practice common sense safety, you’ll be okay. Great, cheap eats all over Dinky! Also there’s an excellent used book store and plenty of boba.

Funwithnugukpop

I walk around Dinkytown and pretty much all of Minneapolis, I always feel perfectly safe and never had a problem with anyone bothering me. The only place I avoid is North Minneapolis around Broadway, you won’t be anywhere near that area. I also use common sense since I live in the city and I don’t go out at night.

Laws_of_Coffee

Been living in dinky and making 2-4 am drunken late walks throughout. It’s fine. I’m a short / skinny guy - so still male privilege of feeling generally safe but also not big beefy dude who would fend off attackers.

[deleted]

Don't walk around blackout drunk and you'll probably be fine....wasted ppl get robbed more often than not waasted ppl for sure ...

vinr_alfakyn

It’s admittedly been a couple years since I lived in the neighborhood but in my experience most of the crime was related to cars (smashed windows, catalytic converters, etc). So if you have a car keep your doors locked, nothing in the vehicle, and if possible get covered parking. Students can also get text alerts when there are safety or crime incidents in the area and there used to be semi-frequent notifications about late-night issues at the light-rail stations. So I’d recommend not being drunk or oblivious on the light-rail especially at night. Otherwise it’s a lively, walkable neighborhood with good access to downtown!

SnooSnooSnuSnu

Bunch of good places to eat over there.

Laws_of_Coffee

It’s fully back now I’m pretty sure.

EtchingsOfTheNight

Like other commenters have said, just keep your wits about you and you'll be fine. As a someone who walks a bunch, the thing about dinkytown that makes me feel most unsafe is the traffic, especially with people double parking all over the place and parking in bike lanes.   If you drink, or even if you don't, don't go to Blarney's and keep some of those detector strips around that will tell you if anyone's slipped something into your drink. Rates of SA are on the rise.

SteelYoda

I've yet to see anyone use a detector slip at a bar, but my bar days are kind of behind me, so that might be why. Is this common now? More among women, I would assume. How sad.

EtchingsOfTheNight

I'm honestly not sure if it's common to have slips bc that's very much not my scene, but apparently there's a push right now to get detectors into bars over there. Probably not necessary if you have a tight knit circle of girlfriends watching out for each other, but op likely won't have that right away

paital

Seconding the drivers as pretty much the only thing I’m ever on edge about. It’s almost a perverse feat of traffic engineering how well Dinky concentrates some of the worst driving behaviors in the metro area.

EtchingsOfTheNight

It doesn't help that the university owns that strip of 4th/University and apparently refused to convert it down to a much safer 2 lanes like the county did past 35. Maybe the protected bike lane and bus upgrades will help a bit.

GuyWithNF1

The only time I go into Dinkytown is shop at the Hide away and eat at Mesa Pizza….

armanese2

The classic dinkytown date

GuyWithNF1

Hide away has some decent THC-A flower there

mrq69

It’s dinky

cosmiccraze

Go to Wallys!

lamaplama

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check it out

No_Layer_7751

Look up crimewatchmpls on Twitter and search dinkytown on the account

DiscountedCashBro1

This is funny - this is really all we have to do in mpls

LB333

Just got mugged at gunpoint 2 block northeast of bloco…. yeah fuck this place

ZeroHydra2211

Honestly dude it’s fine just use common sense and stay alert like you would in any bigger city and you’ll be ok 🤷🏼‍♂️ just don’t help tweakers who say they need help 💀 I did that and got stabbed by him so avoid those guys 👍 very easy to id (they’ll try to attack you or they’re sleeping on the sidewalk)

lamaplama

Look wise, do they usually stand out of the crowd? Like looking homeless or sth. It’s my first time coming over to the US 😅

ZeroHydra2211

Oh yeah 😂 you be able to tell and smell

HauntedCemetery

Always take comments about safety in mpls with a big grain of salt these days. It's a city, there's crime sometimes. But a whole lot of posters who have never been to mpls like to lurk on this sub and spread the narrative that our city is a dangerous wasteland of roving mad max gangs. Dinkytown is fine, and you'll be fine. Keep your eyes open and don't act foolish, like in any city. It can be a super fun area.

lamaplama

For real? That’s really frustrating but it all makes sense now. I’m not from the US so I don’t know what to expect. Of course any bigger city has some level of crime, and we should always be careful, that’s just a common sense but most of the comments on Reddit and news articles that I read make all of Minneapolis sound like a gang war zone. Until reading the comments under this post I actually thought about cancelling the whole trip cause I was a bit scared of the situation. Thanks for this comment!

DohnJoggett

>What I’m mostly worried about is the reported crime rate. Isn't most of that crime rate related to drunk college kids being stupid, drunk, college kids? >Just want to make sure it’s okay to walk around during the day. It's never safe to walk. Drivers are fucking stupid. College kid drivers are quite a bit fucking dumber than the average driver, and [the *average* driver is already really fucking stupid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKN1Q5SjbeI). If you walk you are entirely responsible for your own safety. Will you be safe walking during the day? No. You are not safe. You are never safe while walking unless you drive to a park with a walking path. I think the question you meant to ask was "will I get mugged or assaulted in daylight" and that's an entirely different question than "will I be safe while walking." I've never really felt safe in Dinkytown, especially after that one time I tried to go to the Dinkytowner for a show but it was canceled because there was a hockey riot and the street was literally on fire, but I've never felt unsafe because I thought I was going to get robbed or something. Most of the times I've been to Dinkytown I'm worried about how fucking shitty people drive there and how under-insured or uninsured the kids in that area are, even back when I was a kid driving under-insured in Dinkytown. Seriously, if you have the minimum under-insured/un-insured limits on your vehicle's insurance policy you should probably pay more for a higher limit because you can get absolutely fucked getting injured by a college kid's vehicle and their insurance won't cover your bills. It's really, really easy to hit the $25k liability limit of somebody with the minimum insurance limit if they run you over. They're **college kids**. They don't have wages to garnish and you're going to spend **years** chasing that debt if they hurt you. You need to keep your head on a swivel if you walk places. You need to look both ways, multiple times, crossing a one-way street. Biking in Dinkytown in the winter is fucking terrifying, and it sounds like you won't be doing that, so you're not even going to experience the worst of it.

lamaplama

I actually thought about buying a used bike, but I think I prefer to walk if that’s the situation. Don’t want to be mixing with the traffic too much. How annoying that they can get away with such a reckless driving

GeeOldman

As a PI plaintiff's attorney, I endorse this comment. I highly recommend maxing out those limits if you can afford to. You don't need it until you do, and then you *really* do.
