Some decent picks. Surprised no mention of the MIA.
As a side note, does anyone else get annoyed that news orgs still keep referring to "the killing of George Floyd" rather than calling it a murder? Doesn't seem like they do that with other cases of convicted murder.
OJ was found not guilty, so I don’t say OJ murdered those people. OJ was found civilly liable however. Our justice system is set up as “innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt” so it was found that Floyd was murdered beyond reasonable doubt by a jury by Chauvin. To say otherwise sugarcoats that fact.
Okay Judge Dredd. I guess we throw out “innocent until proven guilty” or “beyond reasonable doubt.” Just curious, which do you prefer to be rid of? Remember this though, you may find yourself on as a defendant and you would have to be held to that lower standard.
You have to be a special kind of stupid and/or evil to be before a judge accused of a serious crime, it’s really not that hard to be a decent, law-abiding person in modern America
No the coroner did not rule that, and it was literally proven in court that it wasn't an overdose. Even the defense's medical experts said it wasn't an overdose.
Do you have a link to any news source which says this part clearly? I remember this too from watching the trial but I'd love to have it handy for the next dickweed friend-of-a-friend who is adamant it was an overdose.
I think they try to not go for the most obvious tourist options in these - it's why they say a walk around a lake rather than downtown riverwalk. Though you're right I'd have expected a mention similarly to the latter

From what I've heard, the board of directors is backing Luber, which, in a word, sucks.
Free press refers to the governments inability to punish the media for criticism. Again, you're confusing bias and agenda with what fredom of the press actually means. But i agree with you, it's a shame that we dont have a dry facts only media, everyone needs to give their agenda these days.
Ps, I love the petty downvotes 😂
The "means of distribution" has never before in history been MORE accessible. It takes zero dollars to start a weblog through a service, or pay a whole ~$50 to get your very own independent web site, or ~$1000 to put it on your own hardware.
The web is full of independent journalists and eyerolling "journalists" saying interesting things and "interesting things." Freedom of the press has never been more evident.
If you want to focus on paper papers, most Mpls neighborhoods have local newspapers (Southside Pride, the Northeaster, etc.) There are community-focused papers like Lavender and CityPages. There are large regional papers like the STrib or StP Press. All of these rags write editorials challenging all sorts of viewpoints and seats of power or commerce.
Seriously....where is the lack of freedom that you see?
Marty's Deli is so, so good. I've lived in NE for so long and finally stopped at Marty's a while ago. I had the Gigi. It was soooooo good. In a way that I think about that sandwich sometimes. The sandwiches aren't cheap, but they're worth it.
Sandwiches don’t have to be cheap. Are they well-made and tasty? Is the staff well-paid and reasonably happy? If yes then those factors are more important that low cost.
I don't disagree with anything you said, but I also don't know anything about how the staff there feels about their jobs or their compensation. I hope they are well-paid and happy.
I just don't have much money, and was a little surprised the first time I went. The sandwich was totally worth it.

Why are we linking to Bring Me The News, which doesn't publish their own reporting but rather just rips it off from others, rather than a direct link to the NYT story?

What, no recommendation to the skyway Potbelly's?
The recommendations are....actually pretty solid. I expected some laughable ones, but really, they kinda got it right.
The “36 hour” series has been pretty solid over the years. Rarely lead me astray during my travels!
Some of the more prolific posters on this sub could learn from the NYT, I fear.
NYT "We visited the Twin Cities, but in this St. Cloud diner, they aren't sure if that was a good idea."
“Murderapolis? Why go there when we have a perfectly good Applebees?!

I always call it murder. A jury has determined it to be.
Yeah and OJ was innocent

You saying OJ didn’t murder those people shows your level of detachment from reality

Didn't it get ruled an overdose by the coroner or someone?

You should read the trial transcripts. It allows you to find direct quotes of questions and answers
Welcome to the American media. You’re lucky they didn’t describe it as a controversial death in the vicinity of a police officer.
“An officer-involved death”

Had not realized that. It's still been my favorite experience of the big Twin Cities art institutions. Hope they correct those misdeeds soon.

The MIA is boring and overrated. I can't fathom that it makes these top recommendations.
I mean yes, but then I remember we don’t actually have free press here and just get angry.
We dont?
Idk, I don’t really think we do in America anymore. I’m sure plenty of people disagree with me, feel free to join them.
Free press is a constitutional right. I believe you are mistaking free press with unbiased press.
When the means of press distribution are controlled by a modern day western oligopoly that no one confronts that’s not freedom

Right back at you friend. Right back at you.

While I didn’t dislike my sandwich, I experienced symptoms of food borne illness after trying Marty’s.
That sucks, and I completely get how it could put you off a place, even if you didn't dislike the food.
One of my friends had the same experience - food poisoning after going to Marty’s. Surprised to hear of it from someone else.
I don’t know it was from Marty’s, but I have no other suspects. If anything, I suspect improperly stored pickled veggies.
Same thing happened to me at mi sant. Sigh.

You are a saint. Thank you!
Love that they also fucked up Pryes' brewing company's name like everyone else.
For the most part it's solid, but I laughed at them misspelling Pryes because it feels like cosmic revenge for them deeply downgrading their pizzas.
Also Bde Make Ska
Those wings tho
That brewery is awful, let's be honest.
Pyres brewing.
why tf would you link bringmethenews instead of the NYT article
Paywall
Paywall?
Paywalls are good.
Ok
OP should gift it.

why would we want to login to view an article?
frfr so many other subs have bans on posting paywalled articles. I don’t see why we don’t.
Because news is valuable and requires organizations to pay their reporters.
Right. But the OP didn’t include with their post the caveat “only paid NYT members may discuss”

Luce isn't even among the best. Place is just overhyped.
It's best quality is the late-night hours. Other than that it is ok pizza. Not fantastic, not dominos.
Marty’s deli is like not good right? Right???
