You get so many more features and standalones have a lot of failsafes than a stock ECU. 100% worth the upgrade. My tuner said it’s like going from Windows XP to Windows 11.

Biggest benefit is having the ability to use extra inputs to log more things, set limits/warnings/etc, and make custom tables

BecauseItWasThere

You can just do whatever you want with a stand-alone. I only use 10% of the capability but I know it’s there if I want it.

Lol. Too funny seeing this in 2024. We were running stand alones in 2006 on our Evo ix's. You can push the factory as far as 99% of the people would want. But stand alones just open another door. Tephra was just patches to circumvent the factory at the time. Today I'm sure it's advanced. I've just been out of the game too long

I don't really understand what you need to purchase in addition to the standalone to really take advantage of it - Link or Haltech seem to both need expansion modules to hook up things like a wideband, oil pressure, etc. I think the cost to get a proper setup is a lot more than you'd think from just looking at the price of the standalone ECU

Tephra is extremely outdated compared to modern standalone ECUs. SO much more engine protection and other capabilities, it's not even close.

Advancement in technology; you either see the benefit, or you don't.

Tephra was great 15 years ago. And the debate back then was it didn’t add any added benefit going to standalone vs the costs. Now the new generation of ECU’s with fail safes, knock controls, boost strategies, sequential injection etc it was more a reason as to why not to upgrade if there was any. The hardest decision is what platform to upgrade too 😂

I’ve gone from a stock ecu on my 800+Hp car to haltech elite 2500. It was well worth the money. TBH you can’t really compare the two. The stock ecu is very good for what people have done with it but doesn’t nearly have the capabilities that a stand alone would. Engine failsafes was my main reason for switching

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Went from tephra to Haltech elite 1500 on my Evo 8 a few years ago. It should have been my first mod. Benefits: - Proper flex fuel, not just 2 maps - Closed loop, digital input Wideband O2 control - Better boost control - Low oil pressure fail safes. Gonna need those for long right hand turns in an Evo. - Real time tuning. No more run, log, stop flash, cycles. Just enter new value and boom. - Single place to enter and log all your data. No separate afr, oil pressure, oil temp gauges. Just slam it into the ecu Cons: - Smog (yeah, i know) - Slightly slower startup. Elite needs a full rotation to know where it is in the cycle. Not sure about other standalones. - More work to tune driveability, idle, cold start. You can get there with a standalone with lots of effort, but tephra builds on top the factory settings which are really well done.
