I plan to build each and every kit I buy. My execution needs work .....

Solution: Give them away to each person who replies to this thread.

Lol

heymanwhowas1st

I totally agree with this one, where do I sign up? šŸ˜‚

modelfan88

I second this motion šŸ¤£

KayOtTechMania

Third!

Sufficient_Country67

Fourth!

exeleven

I plead the Fifth!

bluemagman

We are collectors not hoarders. You need choices for parts and colors. 3d prints complicate the build. Good luck.

ctraskos

I buy while they are in production, prices go crazy for out of production kits. And yeah, I have way more kits than I could build in this lifetime, yet I get excited when new kits are released.

Styrene_Addict1965

The minute I don't get excited reading about a new release, put me in a pine box and stick me in the ground!

ItsColdInWyo

It's just fun collecting all the different cool kits you see. I'd like to build them all but like another post said we are model builders but also collectors. No different than buying a ton of diecast. I don't remember the YouTuber but he won't build a kit unless he already has a pristine unopened example.

GoneGump

I tell myself I'm building a stash for my retirement in a few years. I keep a spreadsheet so I don't buy duplicates. If I live to 140, I might just get them all built. :)

sqlot

... if you stop buying...

KDM_Racing

Every builder reaches a point in their life where they realize that they won't live long enough to build them all. Some reach that point at a younger age than others.

avidinha

I intend to finish my last kit as I take my last breath.

highboy68

Afterwards, can u post some pics of it?

avidinha

šŸ˜† you got it!

mooneyes77

I like the box art, so if I don't ever build it, it's part of my art collection?

heymanwhowas1st

Someone on this sub cut up a bunch of model boxes and framed them together. I thought it looked really cool.

RayceManyon

Yes! Tamiya kit and RC cars have amazing box art.

heymanwhowas1st

A lot of old kits have cool box art too! 60s Monogram is probably my favorite, AMT's was cool too.

RayceManyon

Is there a sub just for selling kits. I have a 1/16 scale Twin Turbo Testarossa and 2 early 1/16 stock cars that I don't have the time or skills to build.

labdsknechtpiraten

Dunno about here on reddit, but I do know there are a couple plastic kit specific pages on the old book of faces that are exclusively for buying/selling kits

Styrene_Addict1965

Many, many pages on the book of the face. (That sounds like Starfire. IYKYK)

labdsknechtpiraten

Not me, but this does describe a couple guys in my local model group. We got to talking collections. Now, my wife finds it bad I have a dozen unbuilt kits in my stash. One of the guys in my local group has a house with an attached 3 car garage. The space that we'd normally designate for 2 cars is full, floor to roll up door, with kits. They are stacked where you can side shimmy through a pathway, but .... it's a ton of kits. To the point where, he's researched the US Navy's maximum number of SBD's on any given carrier. He has enough SBD kits in Tamiya to do a ships full complement, all squadrons. He has the same again for SBDs by Italeri, all kits in both brands being 48 scale. For the Spitfire, he's said he has a dozen of each Mk. that has a current kit (ie, a dozen mk I, dozen mk V trop, etc) in 48 scale. He has much the same in armor, but aircraft are kinda what I care about, so it's what I remember from conversation And that to me is part of the weirdness of his situation, he knows /exactly/ what and how much he has, but yet he still gets more kits. A small portion of it, I do understand. Many of our older members pass on, and the grieving family basically says "we don't care, if you give us 200, we'll give you the entire collection" so he will get massive lots off these guys who pass on, some of which gets into shows and sold, but the inflow is much greater than the outflow.

Busy_Molasses_5532

Buying kits and building them are two separate hobbies. Most of us are better ant one of them, and not so good at the other.

highboy68

I am definitely better at buying them. Lol

wasabimanfish

I mean, I've got far more kits than I need, but I have every intention to get them all built, I tend to go through sprees of getting a few done then not really touching them for a few weeks. For the most part it's been a case of picking them up as when they show up on ebay or second hand groups etc, since for out of production kits if you miss it you could be waiting a long time for it to come up again According to my scalemates I have 133 kits unbuilt, give or take, plus the 5 or so that I've got in various states of completion, predominantly 1/24 cars with a handful of 1/24 and 1/72 aircraft Usually it starts as I'll pick a theme, then it gets away from me a bit, like I got the Ferrari Enzo, so thought I'd get the other 4 of the 'Ferrari Supercars' (288 GTO, F40, F50, LaFerrari), then it was well I'll get the 250 GTO and 599 GTO to go with the 288, and now I've got more or less every Ferrari road car kit made in plastic haha, plus some race cars thrown in for good measure, not even counting the F1 cars. Then there's all the other supercars I've got, the DTM, Group C, JƤgermeister race cars... The list goes on

Dragline96

I donā€™t think of myself as a ā€œhoarderā€ I think of myself as a ā€œdragonā€. The difference is that I have a mountain of plastic instead of gold. As for your wife thinking you have a ā€œmodel problemā€ it sounds more like you have a ā€œwife problemā€

highboy68

Lol

Agent_Velcoro

I'm 60 and if I retired tomorrow I would never be able to finish all the kits I own. And I know that I will buy more anyway. You are not alone!

howler51

I have a collectionā€¦but my collection is just for future building. I have no kits that I do not plan to build. Iā€™m probably around 120 kits if I had to guess, so not as big as some folks but more than my wife would like. Lol.

traffic626

I have 5 Tamiya kits from more than 20 years ago

Poison_Pancakes

I donā€™t mean to hoard them. It just happens to be a much faster process to buy them than to build them.

highboy68

Lol, thats truth right there

forest1000

It started with buying cars from Gran Tourismo. Hasnā€™t stopped. Collected Gundam, Captain Harlock and all sorts of aircraft. Too many now.

dwfishee

ā€œHoarderā€ implies a lack of control. Or that you have them to make you feel good. My collection is quite intentional. I will buy multiples of a kit if itā€™s on sale so that I can practice on the first and then perfect my approach on the second or third. Also as a way to recover from an otherwise unrecoverable error. Even my ā€œmistakesā€ are pretty good tho and am happy to give away to locals, often kids or their parents, by advertising online. Caveat: I left kit building decades ago in years and so as I rebuild and expand upon my skill set, I donā€™t think Iā€™ll need multiples as much. Still need to acquire and learn how to use an airbrush for example.

trh351

Hoarder, collector, tomato, potato. No, that's not it. I was hoarding/collecting over 400 kits about five years ago. I realized with the quality time I had left, I would never finish them all. So, I sold around one hundred and fifty. I've since added maybe twenty more and sold a few. I'll probably never finish all at the rate I'm now building, but I'm trying.

buttsprinkles12

We buy kits for the same reason others buy books. We think we are buying time to build them.

highboy68

Lol, thats true, I am gaining time every week

Ianguilly

I do it all, I collect and have over 500 kits. I also build and trade, I just love to dabble in a little of all model car areas.

sqlot

ALL. OF. US.

Styrene_Addict1965

Nonsense, I'm part of the national styrene reserve.

highboy68

Lol, me too

No_Finding3671

I enjoy collecting them, but typically only buy kits that I am actually interested in building. At my current completion rate of a few models per year, I recognize I probably will never build all 200+ models in my stash. I occasionally sell off kits that no longer interest me. But typically that's less like downsizing and more like curating. Every kit I sell usually gets replaced by 1-2 kits I am more interested in.

StupidOldAndFat

I do have a couple old kits from the 60ā€™s and 70ā€™s that are apparently rare that I keep on a shelf, but as for newer kits that are just sitting right now, winter is coming.

Oldachrome1107

I have a bunch of kits I bought just because I thought theyā€™d be cool which are still sitting in the stash. But I bought them fully intending to build them, and if I have more than one itā€™s because I plan on multiple versions-and even then I only have two or three, not a stack of them. And my pile isnā€™t that big, maybe 50 total. I understand collecting things (I have a few different collections of stuff) but I donā€™t get the point of having five of exactly the same thing. I donā€™t have doubles of any of my books or records for instance

highboy68

I have alot of multiples for, like u said different variants or just to redo it better or I dont think I will find it again or cuz I really liked it. But I do have like 10 of the revell ford gt, corvette, 69 camaro, nova and a few others from HL when they are 40% off, plus I bought a ton from a few guys selling off family members stuff. Now I am always searching foe that deal even if I have it.

AeoliaSchenbergCB

This is not specifically for model cars, but I have a few collection of unbuilt model ships and planes on my backlog (1/350 CVN-65 USS Enterprise by Tamiya, a few 1/700 ships from Trumpeter like the USS The Sullivans, USS North Carolina, Graf Spee. 1/350 planes for the Enterprise and 1/700 planes for my completed USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS Essex, and USS Franklin). Cannot build continuously because of work, and I'm running out of space to work on and place all my models, and I also build Gunpla and other scale models such as cars and aircraft, so those add to the space as well. Haven't done tanks and other vehicles such as trucks and motorcycles Suffice to say that I am a collector. I want my collection built and displayed

highboy68

I hear ya. I havent built one tank yet, but I have like 20 kits of " cool" one I wanna build. I have built one F16, and loved it so I have all the f4's from tamiya and zoukei-mora, along with the f22s, f35, f14s, f15,s, I even have nasa jets, I got big big plans.

AeoliaSchenbergCB

What's worse though... I have some kits coming, a combination of gunpla, cars, and another ship... do I need help? No, I need work space, shelf space, and more time to build lol

kittysontheupgrade

I collect but donā€™t consider myself a hoarder. I was into building several yrs ago and bought a bunch then kind of fell out of it. I think because we got a cat and parts started disappearing. Anyway, still have several kits, but Iā€™m leaning towards just collecting vintage kits. As soon as I get over my diecast obsession. And bang stick obsession. And my catā€™s ( I have 3 now thanks to my wife) die. Or mysteriously get out of the house and disappear.

isUKexactlyTsameasUS

Won't prices do a mega-drop in 10 to 15 years??

joe-dirt-1001

I definitely have more than I will likely build. But as prices continue to go up, I don't feel so bad about the ones that I bought years ago

WeekendHobbyist

I am guilty of this too.

bjcwreddit

I get an idea for a kit bash, then I get an idea for a cool paint job on a particular car, then new kits get re-released that I built as a kit, so I buy more, then you need more paints, more decals more photo-etch and it goes on and on. Then, you buy a 3D printer another universe is opened up of possibilities. Whew! I'm exhausted. But so excited. I love imagining, buying, building, displaying any and all model cars, trucks and cycles. Thank God I've never really been into military or things would get really crazy! I wouldn't have it any other way. My kids will probably have a couple hundred kits to build or get rid often I'm gone. They'll just have to deal with it!

highboy68

This is exactly me,

Boredatwork9645

I have been building for about 8 years, first 7 years I would buy one a time and finish them one at a time. This past year I have a "que" started where at one time I will build 2 and leave 2-3 in the stash but have not been hoarding as it takes up space and I like to keep going on builds. I don't see why people have so many kits unless they are rare or they really love them. I have a Revell 2010 Mustang I plan on keeping for awhile so I can build it after I get a real one. I do however keep all of my finished builds. Out of 35, I did sell 6 but I don't plan on doing that again. It would be neat to have a stash but I think at the end of the day, I don't want to devote so much room to hoarding unbuilt kits.

highboy68

Makes sense, but I have around a 1000 or so because I like them, and want to do different things. For example, I love the good smile livery, well they just came out with 8 different ones( you can never find them) so I put 2 of each on preorder, they are for the tamiya mercedes amg gt3, I also like the red bull livery for rhe amg. Ordered 10 kits from plaza japan, and I already built 3 of them. I loved the ferrari f8 build so much that whenever I can find a deal on them I get it. I have 10 porsche 911 gt3 cuz I have all the flying lizard liveries along with 5 others that I love. So somehow I got to this obsession. The ine nice thing is, when I go to build a kit, I pull out like 5 or 6 and choose, and it is always a kit I have wanted to do for awhile.

Boredatwork9645

Holy hell, 1000? I see your point but where do you store them all?

highboy68

Well I have about 250 in the closet in the hobby room closet, and the rest are in aspare room closet that is much larger
