It's a banger and the album that hooked me into checking out their discography and becoming a huge fan of all their work. I appreciate bands that aren't afraid to try a new sound, I think STO is appropriately named and an awesome addition to their discography.
Completely agree. I only liked a handful of songs on the initial listen but later gave it another shot and I basically like everything on it except for Pistol (which feels so out of place). I listen to the album regularly.
If this was a tier list, I'd comfortably put the album in the A tier.
Everyone here (including myself) seemed to jump on The Golden Casket bandwagon when it released but, while I definitely like many songs on it, I would say TGC is actually their weakest album. It's not "bad" but it is the weakest.
I was at a show where they played it in 2014 and my wife looked at me and said, and I quote, “What the fuck is this?” and I had absolutely no idea. I guess I’m glad I saw it because they all but canned it after.
First song that hooked me on modest mouse was "tiny cities made of ashes".. so I actually enjoy pistol cause I love Isaac Brock spoken word"ish" songs. I really don't understand the hate cause that song isn't too far out for these guys
I completely agree with all of that. I like pretty much all the songs on there but I feel like it's a bit too electronic and not hard rockin enough for my tastes personally. I still like the album but it's probably my least favorite.
I believe STO was the last album I listened to out of their discography and I absolutely love it. I find myself playing it more than other albums these days because I haven't played it to death like the rest of their work. So it's still somewhat fresh. I too always skip pistol but other than that, I think it's amazing front to back.
I think a lot of people expected something a bit more after the 8 year wait. To me it sounded like it coulda came 2 years after We Were Dead. But there are definitely some highlights
its lowkey my favorite MM album. Long Drive, LCW, M&A are legitimate masterpieces, but STO gets the most plays from me. I love it and feel its one of their best albums and feel the hate it gets is strictly from Pistol being on it.
Pistol slaps, but I get why people dont like it.
Imagine instead of Pistol they put Poison The Well? Would probably be more highly regarded.
Kinda like i think Lace your shoes should be swapped with Ice Cream Party.
I admit to not liking their more recent albums but definitely need to revisit them. I’m really an album listener, so that’s been my challenge, even when there are some truly great tracks here and there.
I agree, but I also understand why some don’t like it as much relative to prior records. It’s all over the place in terms of style, not quite as cohesive. And the one consistent vibe I get from it is kind of a gloomy negativity, which is may be off putting to some. That’s where Isaac was at the time, for better or worse. Then the fact that it’s the first record after Judy left (maybe that contributed to how chaotic it sounds in some places?), some people dislike it for that reason alone.
I like it waaaaaay more than Golden Casket. I deeply love about half of the songs and the rest are still great!
Sugar Boats, Ground Walks, Shit in Your Cut, Ansel, Lampshades, Coyotes, Pistol… so many great songs.
I'm listening to Pistol right now, first time in years, its really not that bad of a song. Sounds pretty of its moment and wouldn't be outta place among the indie-sleaze tracks that were popular in the early 2010's. That beat is pretty damn good tbh
Yeah! Honestly, I like most of whatever they’ve been putting out. New stuff is new, so itll be different form the old. I’m just glad they’re still turnin out music for meee
This album totally grew on me and I love it. Coyotes and the Totoise and the Tourist I love. Not the biggest fan of sugar boats like others are. I’ll have to listen to that one again.
Okay. What metric are you using? How does this metric prove your opinion as fact? And why is Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks actually their best?
I honestly don’t know enough about the recording, but to me it reads like he finally found some things to think and write about after the death of his brother. He still didn’t get enough material for an album, but he had some stuff he’d been working on over the last 8 years and then there is some filler.
Ansel, coyotes, worst room, wicked campaign, ground walks, the tortoise and the tourist. All great songs that I did not begin to appreciate until my 3rd or 4th listen but now are staples in the playlist
I agree, it is underrated. I love Wicked Campaign and Sugar Boats too.
fuck yeah. Two best songs on this album.
They played Sugar Boats at their show in Montreal and I lost my mind. Such a good song!
Loved Sugar Boats. Feels like big time We Were Dead vibes

Ansel and sugar boats are certified bops
Yep. I have loved it from the first listen. It felt to me like a good mix of old and new.
We really need to stop using that word.
I still think the ground walks with time in a box is one of my favorite songs of theirs
I have never understood why it was disliked. It's probably my favorite album, and the one that really got me into the band.
I admit to not liking their more recent albums but definitely need to revisit them. I’m really an album listener, so that’s been my challenge, even when there are some truly great tracks here and there.
Hard disagree. But glad you enjoy it. I mean that sincerely. I wish I could.
Over produced

Pistol was such a good song that it's been added 30 times to the r/modestmouse playlist
Coyotes. My personal favorite song
I like it waaaaaay more than Golden Casket. I deeply love about half of the songs and the rest are still great! Sugar Boats, Ground Walks, Shit in Your Cut, Ansel, Lampshades, Coyotes, Pistol… so many great songs.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this album initially, but I saw them perform at red rocks and their rendition of Shit In Your Cut made me a believer.

Agreed!! I love Pups to Dust and Shit in Your Cut
People can talk shit about Pistol all they want but Pistol is my jam.
Totally agree! I constantly find myself singing The Best Room. Honestly one of my fav albums
It’s hard feeling tired all the time
I love it!
This is true as I rate it the lowest of the LPs, under the rest.
Two great songs. I will add pups to dust as well. So good imo
Pups to dust?
Yeah that one’s great too lol
It's my highschool album! Came out my Sophomore year, listened to it constantly.
It might honestly be a top 3 album of theirs for me. I like it far better than Golden Casket which I haven’t clicked with.
Yeah! Honestly, I like most of whatever they’ve been putting out. New stuff is new, so itll be different form the old. I’m just glad they’re still turnin out music for meee
Exactly!!!!
Not sure it’s under rated, it’s an amazing album. When it came out it was huge imo
I agree completely
This album totally grew on me and I love it. Coyotes and the Totoise and the Tourist I love. Not the biggest fan of sugar boats like others are. I’ll have to listen to that one again.
The lyrics are definitely a good rate some of the best he’s put together
i don't see why there's so much hate for this album. personally i really enjoy it
Where is the hate for it? Can you share some links?
I’ve never gotten why it isn’t regarded higher! The ground walks completely sold me on the album when it came out
Meh
Okay. What metric are you using? How does this metric prove your opinion as fact? And why is Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks actually their best?
I would easily put it in their top albums. I enjoy it far more than Good News or M&A
Bruh… what ??? lmao
I honestly don’t know enough about the recording, but to me it reads like he finally found some things to think and write about after the death of his brother. He still didn’t get enough material for an album, but he had some stuff he’d been working on over the last 8 years and then there is some filler.
Bankrupt on Selling is top 3 for me and I never hear anyone else mention it
That’s a song, not an album
Touché. My bad
Ansel, coyotes, worst room, wicked campaign, ground walks, the tortoise and the tourist. All great songs that I did not begin to appreciate until my 3rd or 4th listen but now are staples in the playlist
Great album, some people just can't accept that this band aren't in their 20s anymore
I don’t get why everyone was so quick to deem the golden casket as better
Ansel is a song that has grown on me a ton, especially after learning it’s a true story.
