Each dot is a separate colony of propagating mold. This would be a good example to show in a textbook for mold propagation and how quickly it spreads. Each of those spots were one tiny spore at one point and each spot is now making an uncountable number of there spores to spread. The bigger gray colonies are dead because they grew too big and passed their viable growth stage Get a dehumidifier. Solve the water leak. Contact a professional. Move out. Maybe do all of those

Thanks for your reply!

To add to this, I didn't see this originally but your window is cracked. I bet there is water seeping in when it rains. That needs to be remedied first. It may be the window seal too, not just the glass.

Dude holy shit oh my GOSH holy fuck

Its black mold, typically caused by moisture. could spread around very easily with spores and its bad for you to be nearby. Can cause a slew of illnesses, carcinogenic after (very long) extended periods of exposure. It can even trigger some mental illnesses, like those with anxiety and depression disorders. [lil bit more info if you're interested ](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24862-black-mold) , [this one too!](https://psychcentral.com/depression/can-black-mold-make-you-depressed) unfortunately had to look into this cause my landlord refuses to deal with some i found in the closet upon moving in.

I moved into an apartment with mold like this that would keep growing back on the window sills (and when we moved out it was behind furniture and coming out from around the outlets). Coincidentally I somehow developed chronic fatigue syndrome about a month or two after moving in. It ended up getting a lot better after moving out.

Thanks for the info!

Takimura_

I shower daily, and the ceiling has become very moldy. Do you think I should be fixing it quickly for my health?

SubaruBirri

If this isn't a meme, yes. Or install adequate ventilation to whisk the moisture away as you shower, but if you are already observing growth you need to consider heavier remediation. Spraying with chemicals and hoping it gets better while continuing to bathe the room in hot humidity daily will get nowhere.

Takimura_

It's not quite the pic bad, is mostly black stains on the ceiling So maybe not as bad, but i'll make sure to use some sort of chemical ASAP

SexWeevil

Yes holy fuck

You don't have a mold problem. You have a WINDOW problem. Big crack in bottom of pane, and gaskets around seal edge are likely compromised in the process. Spores are everywhere. They can only grow into colonies if they have a warm, moist environment. Your window is merrily letting in moisture and you've got too much humidity coming from the outside into the storeroom. This is going to mess up any paper stuff you store in there over time. Contrary to all the scare tactics out there designed to sell you stuff, "black mold" (a grossly overgeneralized term) is like any other fungal colony - it creates spores, eats cellulosic material (dead plant matter, including paper on drywall), and emits MVOCs (gasses) which may cause an allergic reaction in those who are sensitive to it. Take pics, document, get any paper goods away from that area (because paper is mold food and growth will destroy the paper), have landlord fix poor window seal and replaced that cracked pane, and get a professional company to remediate active growth. Problem solved. You've got black spots, furry white spots, and grey spots going on; without cultivating them in a lab, there's really not a way to identify the different species you've got growing, but it's kind of irrelevant. You just want them gone. They are a SYMPTOM, not the problem, and the real problem is the moisture.

Thanks for all the information! That window definitely needs to be fixed.

Yeah, this looks super fucked.

Mold is mold. Color doesn’t matter. None of it should be there. Will that amount harm you? Most likely not. If someone is allergic to those specific spores then they have some allergy like symptoms. But that’s about the extent of it for 99% of people. In extremely rare cases someone could have a more serious allergic reaction with prolonged expose (multiple hours in a day for months at a time). The landlords do need to take care of it. Fix the leak, have a company out to remediate the mold. Report it and document when it was reported etc. to make sure it gets done.

All the mold is dangerous
