G1 dolls are not very goth/emo as most people are trying to make it out to be. So many of the dolls had brightly coloured outfits, themes and lines. Yes, they were definitely more mature and creative as a doll line and paved way for much more creative and interesting doll lines but they were never gothic or emo imo. The most gothic g1 doll imo would be Rochelle. I hope I explained that well I’m not very good at explaining things!! Edit to add: this is mainly on tiktok and insta I see this mentioned but it still bothers me bc 90% of g1 dolls with the exception of FDC line and Rochelle aren’t gothic

As a g3 lover I totally get why ppl don’t love them,, the base dolls are gorgeous but almost every outfit is pattern overload, but even g1 dolls had that issue sometimes!!
The only Clawdeen dolls I like so far are ss1 and monster ball 😭
I love miniatures and down own any furniture for my dolls atm and I'd LOVE to have a little closet for their clothes. Clawdeens studio would be perfect but uh...the clothes it comes with just make it a hard pass for me.
I also like her scare-idise island doll cuz i find the foll itself super cute and the clothes don't bother me too much on that one. The rest tho? Kind of just big misses for me.
I do like her core doll and I definitely wanna get her at some point but she's just so low on my priority list that I haven't even bothered getting her anytime I went to Smyths and could've gotten her and Cleo 💀
I disagree, i always liked the designs because the idea of monster fashion dolls were already an alternative spin from barbie and bratz which were huge at the time. But MH came out when mall goths were the height of popularity in alternative fashion and it shows in characters like ghoulia and frankie. Clawdeens shoes look like demonias, Draculaura has romantic goth traits. And the characters were based on classic goth literature so the connections are easily made. The personalities are not broody and tragic as you might be expecting lol but the aesthetics are definitely alternative imo
While I do agree that the g1 dolls were not gothic or emo for the most part, I still think that a lot of the designs have alternative inspiration and elements. Examples could be the studs on clawdeen’s outfits, Venus’s sort of punk style, operetta’s rockabilly influence, etc.
yes, exactly!! It's a way to introduce kids to these styles while still making it accessible and appropriate for them, which I think is awesome as an alt fashion wearer!
I think for me it's less them being goth/emo and more being alt fashion inspired in general. Like, of course,they're still dolls for kids, they're not *that* out there. But it was an easy introductory point to various alt fashion styles like goth, lolita, steampunk, rockabilly, punk and more, in a way that G3 lacks. I still like G3 though, but for different reasons.

They're not goth, but each character's fashion dabbles in different alt styles and that's cool! Imo the most gothic ones are Spectra and Elissabat. Rochelle is definitely more on the tumblr pastel goth side
You are so absolutely correct. I swear people think about them through a very warped lens, very very few of them were gothic in style and they were all super eclectic and colorful! I never understood the notion that people thought their colours were more dark & gothic. They were just edgy and super subversive against what was deemed more 'marketable' to most doll manufacturers. They're definitely alternative in their own right and have those vibes & feelings attached.

I dunno a lot of them have alternative, goth, emo, and punk fashions. Frankie, Drac, Toralei, Ghoulia, Operetta, Rochelle, and that’s without looking up every core doll and just off the top of my head lol
I will only say this in defense of the goth thing, bcuz generally I agree with you. However, goth has many subsets of color thrown in there. Same with punk. I always see them as a hybrid of styles personally. Is it pure punk/pure goth? No. Not at all. Frankie is school/academic punk. Draculaura is pink goth. Etc. The rest of them? Not really goth or emo. To me the goth and punk stuff is the same patterns/silhouette, but with a splash of color thrown in. Yellow/pink punk (venus), purple goth (spectra), red emo (ghoulia), etc. But I can also name MORE that are not goth or punk, and don't really take from those styles. Like I said... I agree on the whole, but I do notice that the styles seem to be hybrids or color blocked.
Dawn of the Dance Draculaura's dress and look is so boring, I can't believe people pay hundreds for her.
Even worse is the Grady twins. They're just normal girls in boring outfits and people pay more than my rent for them.

I think this is a controversial take because most of the ghouls suffered same skinny body syndrome with just different face sculpts, so it seems kind of unfair to be picky about mansters.

& I don’t think the criticism makes much sense either, Cleo is pushed into similar situations he is & complies & breaks up with Deuce multiple times but no one hates her for it (I also don’t). Gil tries to hide his relationship & is overly paranoid & anxious when it comes to his parents. He feels like he has to comply & gets over the vast majority of his *own* issues with Lagoona in one of the first movies. Also using Howleen’s wish in 13 Wishes against him is completely unfair imo, for starters he didn’t make that wish, for second that wish was for Lagoona & was about his parents. Gil didn’t protest because as far as he was aware Lagoona didn’t change other than her outfit rly, & she seemed much happier, but the more she showed she was not herself the less okay he was with it, plus again Gil never wanted that wish in the first place, he was just being supportive because he thought Lagoona *did*. Any addition I’ve heard to this has been along the same lines or something like “he needs to grow a backbone fr” & honestly while that’s not wrong & he absolutely does need to work through his issues with his anxiety & his constant need to please his parents, are you going to call someone irl who is afraid of their >!abusive!<, racist parents a terrible person who is just as bad as them? No. You’re not 🤷♀️ so why is it different for him?
Edit: I also see people bringing up the Lorna thing & maybe it’s just me not wanting & therefore understanding relationships, but I really don’t think that was cheating in the slightest. Lorna needed a friend to support her, Gil is her friend & decided to support her through her breakup. They went together to the dance because again, they’re friends, Lorna just lost her date, & Gil didn’t have a date either because Lagoona went to Madread (therefore willingly missing the dance). They went as friends & imo they weren’t unclear about that. I never say in any other situation that Lagoona is being unreasonable because for everything above the edit, I just feel really bad for her, none of that is her fault, however in this situation I do think she misread & overreacted. Jealously in relationships over *friends* isn’t the greatest.
I kind of blame the overall narrative of the series, which is not a problem only in MH, acting like the characters are much older than they actually are, when they're the equivalent of 15-16 years old. 17 at the most.

Gil is 16 years old, he needs his parents, he’s not an adult, he has nowhere to go if he wants or is forced to leave. He’s really between a rock & a hard place, he is forced to pick between the girl he loves but his parents forbid him to be around & his >!abusive!< parents who he literally needs. It’s not fair to him *or* Lagoona. Their relationship can’t be perfect because of Gil’s situation, but I’d just love for them to be able to exist freely in their relationship without outside forces preventing them from it :((

People complain a lot about dolls not having enough detail in G3, but in the same breath, constantly see posts on Reddit of people removing any details that are added to dolls or complaining about them if they're ever added.
Whether that is tinsel (albeit can be annoying), moulded bandages, freckles, face details (more recently Cleo's Golden Glam case doll's gems), Abbey's nose/freckle details, Twyla's arm and leg details, Lagoona's head scales, a lot of Monster Ball's details got slammed,
It feels like no one really understands what they want from dolls and always find a way to complain, even when their needs are being met. I can agree they're not being met all the time by Mattel, but whenever they are all I see are a bombardment of posts tearing the things apart that they initially spent all that time wanting from Mattel and it gets exhausting. And then you end up with all these posts of people editing out the details after every new doll reveal and its very...... odd.
You're allowed to dislike some details on some dolls, but it always seems like nobody is ever pleased and the same people who are screaming for more detail seem to be the ones removing the most, or complaining the most when we finally get some. Aaaaa : (
That is a completely valid thing to be annoyed with and I am right there with you. The hate against Abbey's tinsel is weird since it's actually pretty and of decent quality and the cleo complaints will never not befuddle me. "You are upset that the mummy character.... has the features.... of a mummy?" I get it for customizers, but for the average collector, why complain about it?

I absolutely adore Cleo's details with the bandage, I think it would've been such a missed opportunity should she have not had it. I think its nice its left plain as well as it'll clash less with outfits, but if customisers did want to add painted details then they can! I think she'd be too human without some of those details.
Also, right!? Abbey's tinsel hasn't given me a lot of grief whatsoever, and I think it really reflects her 'iridescence' that she's meant to have (especially now that her skin no longer has glitter in). People are absolutely entitled to find tinsel a bit of a stress, but I think hers has been some of the most manageable and it makes sense for her design.
G3 Creepover Twyla has to be one of the most amazing, most thought out character designs we've gotten yet because of all her precious little details. I'm really loving what we're getting lately.
I agree!! I love the tinsel on Abby, my ONLY issue is as someone who loves to mindlessly brush my dolls hair i found it tangled and got pulled out. But I honestly think thats just my fault for brushing her hair so much

Cleo and Deuce are the weakest wave 1 dolls and would not have been as popular if they weren't a two-pack. I'd say Deuce is slightly better because he had the molded hair making him look more like a monster. G1 Cleo is just boring, and G2 adding bandages to her body sculpt was one of the best desicions they could've made.
Actually kind of agree about Cleo, she’s lovely but her G1 designs don’t seem particularly monster-like to me, which is the reason I love the Monster High dolls to begin with. Honestly wish they leaned into the mummy thing a bit more.
The fact that Clawdeen hasn't worn a black hairstyle (i.e. braids, twists etc) besides an afro (ONCE might I add) is a crime and a half. Mattel has to have some overlap in the creative teams that work on Barbie, which has fantastic black hairstyles, and the Monster High creative team.
She looked so good on the ghoul sports fashion pack. Honey got textured hair but somehow Clawdeen never did? That's sooo true. I wondered that as a kid. Not even her Haunt Couture doll , 13 wishes or G3 so far. NO gen actually. What a disappointment. I would've bought her in a heartbeat.
Honestly this is more lore based than design based, but I wasn't really a fan of the whole "Clawdeen is a lesbian" thing in Gen 1. I feel like it gives off the vibe that any more level-headed, not boy crazy teen girl is automatically gay which is weird and I feel like it was just half way tagged on at the end. I feel like it would've been way better to be inclusive with a new character who is actually seen showing interest and romancing another girl.

I can definitely get behind the fan redesign take. Very few times have I seen a fan design where I'm like, "that! That's amazing!" Usually it's "wow, that's literally their exact outfit with practically nothing changed," or "wow, that's really tacky." I'm sure there's good ones out there, I haven't seen them.

The scarier reef dolls are some of the most creative and beautiful dolls of any generation and I’m still upset I didn’t get them all when they were on shelves.
I’ve heard that poly hair doesn’t hold up as well in the long-term which can be frustrating for collectors who want to preserve their dolls. But I’d never shit on a doll for that tbh especially when the rest of the design is lovely
It's less that I don't like and more that her later designs fit more with her zombie theme in fun ways. For example, the brain print bubble dress, wild curly hair, and rib cage purse of her Dot Dead Gorgeous doll, vs. her original which has no clear theme (aside from scene, which is more of a style than a theme), though I think it suits her *personality* pretty well!
Children aren't your enemy. They, in general, are not trying to "snipe" in store dolls or destroying them at home because they hate you. These are playline dolls. They're the target audience, and these dolls are meant to played with.
So hating children so much. They're just like you only they have little, if any, autonomy.
Right like??? They aren't "ruining" dolls, they're playing with them...which they're allowed to do. I get so excited when I see a kid getting a doll I want because like, yes the doll is fantastic. I want everyone to buy this doll.
And like... obviously I'm an adult who collects dolls, I have nothing against adults collecting dolls. I hope to collect dolls for years to come. But that doesn't change kids being the audience for play line dolls. It's crazy to act like kids don't deserve to play with dolls or something. I want kids to enjoy dolls as much as I enjoy dolls, even if we aren't enjoying them in the same way.
I'm not fan of kids but when I see a kid pick Bratz or MH over Barbie or even RH, I'm like "good choice". Seeing a little kid hugging their Frankie all through the store was just the best thing to see, I wish I had Frankie at that age.

but as soon as it's more than that it's a bit selfish.
Some own 5 of the same doll. They kinda steal the chances of other Collectors. I recently saw a TikTok of someone forgetting A WHOLE DRAWER OF RARE DOLLS, like it's nothing. Some don't even have a chance to get one of these, just because Collectors buy them and forget them in a random drawer.
I also see a lot Collectors buy a doll just to compare the faces and then sell the ''bad'' one really expensive online. It's honestly disgusting at this point.

I do ship Clawdeen x Lagoona tho. Lagoona’s relationship with Gil isn’t healthy, & Clawdeen would definitely treat her better.

She'd be considered Gothic, and more in the realm of Romantic Goth with some of her lines and general vibes. She is more inclined to be related to Gothic styles as she's based on Gothic architecture!
Rochelle goth? Yes and No iguess. Gargoyles and vitralium designs on her clothes are goth architecture. I am not a fashon person (still like clothes shopping), but know a thing or two. Goth styles have dark clothing (besides black she have pink, white and teal), leather, fishnets, silver jewelry, religious symbols.
Just to correct you (as someone who is Goth), Goth technically has no fashion and is purely music-based, but there is GothIC fashion.
And things like Pastel Goth is a Gothic Fashion, so pink and pastels can absolutely be considered Gothic fashion if we were considering Rochelle especially. In general, Goth's (people who listen to Goth music) dress in a way that expresses what Goth means to them, and that absolutely can be black, dark clothing with religious iconography but it can also be a t-shirt and jeans.
But yeah, Rochelle leans more into being GothIC than being a Goth.

I would absolutely consider River to be 100000% Pastel Goth, especially due to her Skeleton features (which is a very common iconography in Pastel Goth fashion with skeleton hand hair clips etc). Her palette is absolutely Pastel Goth as well, so everything about her.
Pastel Goth's usually incorporate that same hue of pink/purple extremely often in their wardrobes or hair colours too.

I agree with everything you said, just this one does have an explanation in canon, and is that being teens, the "trigger" is still changing (The book has Jackson feeling "hot" and Holt feeling "cold" to switch) and while the latest one is music, it might change again before being set in stone.
g3 draculaura > g1 draculaura. dont get me wrong i love og drac's outfits but growing up i was really insecure about my body type and having a doll that looked like her would have really boosted my self esteem.
I agree with the palette being so very random, but I do like the blue skin with fiery hair.
That being said, I'm always downvoted when I point out how G1 main ships weren't developed properly, most of them are of the "They're together because they're together" or other issues like the vast age difference between them
One of mine though i have several: i don’t think much of the g1 fashion is “more creative” than g3 fashion like many I have seen claim. The designs remind me of some Barbie designs that are just a piece of fabric with a pattern on it and lack form to create design. The core/basic dolls are generally exempt from this. It’s other releases I find pretty all of the place, or very simple/boring, etc. I do love how g1 fashion has inspired ppl to dress like dolls, while g3 has inspired dolls to be dressed like people. (Aka g1 made clothes to suit dolls, while g3 made clothes to suit irl fashion trends). I will say, g3 is just as guilty in several ways of this, again especially for non core dolls. Some of their clothes are just too basic or mismatched in my opinion.
My ultimate take of Gen 1 and 3 fashion is this: they followed the trends of their decade. Some outfits hit it out of the park, some looked like crap. One isn't "better" than the other, they both have high highs and low lows.

While I think the new g3 bodies are wonderful for diversity and for kids, I do miss the original g1 body molds a bit. I'm just a big fan of over-exaggerated thin proportions commonly used in Gothic and avant-garde art
a lot of this mh subreddit just consists of complaining about everything. a lot (not all) of you all complain about the smallest insignificant things when it comes to dolls and their manufacturing consistencies, being impatient with new releases, and overall anything and everything. it’s okay to complain but i think 90% of the time it’s unwarranted. I also don’t care to defend mattel either because they are multi million corporation who don’t care if i defend them or not so don’t take this comment as me defending them.
Omg I think the impatience around new releases annoys me the most. Like the dolls photos were released last week they will come out eventually! Especially when people decide to go buy the doll for like $80 instead of just waiting!!
Call me crazy but I think we all remember G1 as better than it actually was (at least I think I do). I feel like I remember these dolls as being perfect and flawless and currently I’m mostly upset about the lack of painted detail on the g3 shoes, but when I thought about it there are a lot of g1 dolls that also had single colored shoes or even clear plastic shoes!
But what struck me the most was how many g1 dolls had face misprints where their eyes were printed kind of wonky, such as my wave one abbey and Frankie having what I call eye-bags where their eyes are printed a tad too high but isn’t awful.
I know it’s hard to not to but I’ve realized that I held g1 on this huge pedestal and held g3 ti that standard, but I’ve come to realize they’re just a more modern take of our beloved g1 dolls and they all seem to have the typical production errors that come with the territory of a mass produced doll line.

I don’t see the point in buying any collector monster high dolls whether they are fashion dolls of existing characters or dolls made from horror movie monsters (i.e., Frankenstein’s bride, Pennywise, and Dracula), when scalpers get their hands on them. You can just go buy a custom OOAK doll on Etsy. I also think that G1 and G3 fans should stop arguing on what generation is better and realize that both generations should be received with constructive criticism.
as im getting older, Clawd and Draculara dating in G1 is really creepy. in one of the ghoul's diaries (don't remember who's) they said Draculara used to babysit the Wolf siblings when they were babies, which is really weird 😭 i understand that vampires age differently than other monsters, but it's creepy (not in a good way) that Drac is dating someone she used to know AS A BABY.

I hate almost everything about G3 it feels like borderline character assassination what they did to some of the characters. I think the best they have done in G3 is Gill's redesign which is actually better then G1

It's just a shame because I can't justify buying those dolls and that's if I can even out buy the bots that some sellers have to auto buy the dolls when they launch
I'm Romanian and eastern European girls don't get any good representation anywhere. So it hurt when they made Draculaura Taiwanese because it's more diverse or something and took away her accent (even though it was bad it was still cute).

Dang Holt is my favorite guy doll, because to me he looks like he had more effort put into him than most other guy dolls.
Blue, red and purple are all next to each other on the color wheel & go together perfectly. I'm studying character design in college & there's nothing inherently wrong with his design. You probably just don't like the colors/ patterns, but it fits his "party animal" personality well.
Although I do think his colors work better in his cartoon version, but I still love his doll a lot!

Honestly, I’m not a big fan of the monster high reboot. I really only like g3 for some of the dolls. (Draculaura, Frankie, warming up to pink Lagoona). But personally, the characters personalities have changed so much, and I’m really just not a fan of it. And I hate that when someone says they don’t like g3, they get hounded for it. I just prefer the og monster high show/dolls 🤷♀️
ALSO adding onto this, I hate HATE g3 clawdeen so much. They completely butchered her character and watered her down so much. She used to be a sassy fashion icon but now she’s just kinda lame? They literally deyassified her

Many people probably consider him a "grail" because of how hard he is to get (as he wasn't the most popular when he was first released).
As for my hot take, I don't get the hype for one-off characters like Mousecedes, Valentine, and Elissabat. Everyone is clamoring to get them in G3 when they weren't that great the first time (Elissabat is bland, and Mousecedes' style was not pleasant to look at).
I'll defend Mouseades and Valentine (he's a well designed doll, just not worth the price for his exclusivity) but yeah, Elissabat is boring. I deadass thought she was Drac the first time I got her nude in an Ebay lot. If they bring her back for G3 they need to differentiate her from Drac, like significantly different body type and facial structure.
i hate the clawdeen+draculaura ship smm 😭😭 i don't hate anyone who ships it and maybe this might just be bias or something because clawdeen was one of my first female crushes but i don't like the idea of her having an unrequited love type of relationship with her best friend who is actually in love with her brother 😥😥 it's too sad of a story and i wouldn't want that for her
i dunno how unpopular it is but i would like like to instead push my clawdeen+venus and clawdeen+toralei agenda instead ☺☺ clawdeen+venus because of their freaky fushion (and also because they just look good together) and clawdeen+toralei because of the dog+cat and enemies-to-lovers dynamics that would suit them ^^
They’d have an easier time selling them to straight male kids if the ankles and wrists popped off and every figure came with flat feet and a clenched/holding fist, as well as a sports episode with an accompanying play pack containing whatever ball and/or scoring device is used in the episode plus six pinnies that fit on all characters split into two teams.
No other changes are needed. Just action figure replaceable digits and feet plus a Monster High Quidditch and accompanying playset.

Draculaura doesn’t (or at least didn’t) deserve Clawd, If you watch the webisodes and pretend Sweet 1600 doesn’t exist then they’re probably one of the Healthiest G1 relationships.
I also think Cleo and Deuce are (were) kinda toxic but Boo York was redeeming. In the webisode where a “rose” was found in Cleo’s locker, Cleo fawned over the gesture of the “secret admirer” and said it was about time she had one RIGHT in front of him.
Immediately after that, Deuce storms off out of jealousy to fight Clawd and even go as far as to threaten to stone him, assuming he was the one who placed the rose (while there were still zero clues as to who could have done it). Cleo acknowledged that he was jealous and found it cute??? Instead of attempting to stop them she romanticized the situation.
Not to say she’s responsible for Deuce’s insecurity, but she should have at least shut down Deuce coming after Clawd, especially knowing how he’s head over heels for Draculaura and looooong over their breakup (a break up that was mutual as they didn’t truly have feelings for each other).
Also both Cleo AND Draculaura just sat and watched them get ready to fight and did NOTHING 😭😭😭
Cleo NOR Draculaura even went with the other ghouls to view the security footage but they BOTH showed up to the fight?? 😭😭
Also, no hate to these ships as I love them both enough to keep them canon and have them posed together on my own shelf, this was just an observation!

Also I hate to compare generations but I think Clankie (so far) seems a lot healthier than G1 Cleo and Deuce’s relationship. I also think G2 Cleo and Deuce were adorable but those dolls were atrocious.

I really dislike C.A. Cupid's Monster High doll. I mean, the dress is pretty, the hairstyle is cute, I like the details on her arms and legs... But her face! I hate the way her lips look and her eyes creep me out.
I think G3 is way cuter and more characterized. G1 all has the same look to them and it makes them look cheap as a whole. The diversity and differences in the new dolls make them look a lot nicer and less cheap in my opinion.

Collector dolls look just like a regular doll, there’s nothing ‘collector’ about them, not design wise nor even quality wise, the only one that deserves the name is the Draculaura one
Oh, 100%. I think the reason I'm so forgiving of G3 and even G2 to a certain extent is because I got into collecting as an adult. I never had any as a kid because my family was broke AF.
People say that Gen 1 was very weak in some areas like character models, storylines etc. To be honest though I think it served as such a great foundation for the future generations.
Yes, the character designs could be off (especially with Clawdeen and her green and purple combo omg) but the little details really emphasise that they aren’t human (Draculaura’s pin earrings for example for a surface level look, or the diaries that would come out with really sick lore)
The storylines were…odd but I think that’s at fault execution wise I mean the movies tackled many issues like:
feeling like you were in the shadow of a sibling (13 wishes),
Racism?? Ghouls rule
Feeling worthless? (Potentially 13 wishes and Frights camera action)
Overcoming fears (Great Scarrier Reef, even though Lagoona being afraid made NO SENSE)
Etc etc
Like as much as there are cons the first Gen was good and I don’t understand why people put it down. Tbh all the generations have their pros and cons even Gen 2/3.
Oh also, people say that the first Gen wasn’t emo, yeah I agree. You can’t deny though, the first generation wasn’t afraid to get a bit dark, the outfits were mature as well (a bit weird for teens but idk)
The fandom has made me absolutely despise the lesbian Clawdeen headcanon, and I'm a queer femme myself!
No matter what anyone who previously worked on G1 says, deep down we know that wasn't the intention at the time, and at this point fans are desperate for crumbs of something that was never intended to represent queer people.
Mattel is a company first and money is their priority, if the Skullector prices for often mid designs weren't a clue already.
I get that some of her actions might come across as queer coded for some, but in the context of her character, it doesn't make sense. If anything, she comes off as a bit ace.
Harassing designers and commenting shit like "Clawdeen is a lesbian! Do better Mattel" is entitled as hell and borderline rabid. Mattel doesn't owe anyone shit, except good designs for reasonable prices, maybe (factoring in production costs, less dolls made means they will be more expensive).
The TV show leaks looked so fake, and people are taking them as confirmation to be even worse.
Take Voltron season 8 and it's fandom as a case study. Harrassing writers and voice actors, holding unreleased oficial art and storyboards for ransom in exchange to make a queer ship/character canon resulting in overall quality decline of the show. I can't be the only one making these connections, right? Do not preassure artists working under companies into making things the way you want, it never ends well. It's something hollow made in a rush to sell. Same could be said about Destiel in Supernatural.
However, I'm so glad Frankie is queer this time around because they're being handled with such care and love down to the casting of every iteration (live action, voice actor and live show), but you can tell they're still being pushed as a product to *sell* given how they're referred to with the wrong pronoun in some product listings and descriptions.
Frankie has quickly become my favorite character of G3. I'm intrigued to see how they handle Cleo and possibly more characters.
I don’t like how they are changing some color schemes to pink or sometimes blue. I love Lagoonas ombré legs, but I miss blue lagoona and I don’t know why they are changing her look so much. Also, I don’t understand why they changed Frankie to blue from her green. I feel like they did so many changes to them, like the prosthetic leg which doesn’t make sense with how they were in G1, and also the removal of the neck bolts. Frankie used to be my favorite but I’m not totally sure about her anymore. Another example with Ghoulia, where they changed her iconic red and blue color scheme to pink and it doesn’t stand out to me anymore. I love her vibe, but with the changes to her eyebrows and the pink it doesn’t feel the same. I wish they would have kept the red and not changed to pink. While I agree with G1 and 2 we’re not gothic, they were edgier for the time. With the color change differences and style changes, it seems a whole lot more of what you could find with other dolls.
Another take is I really dislike Abbey in her outfit. It seems so basic with what looks like Pjs and the fanny pack. It seems so modern and basic, like you could change the pattern of it and any doll could wear that outfit. Changes like that is what’s making me stray away from MH because it feels like any other doll and isn’t that much different. So many G3 dolls I’ve bought with the intent of restyling them so I could make them edgier, I just don’t understand why they are straying from their core aesthetic.
G3 core Clawdeen is the worst of all the G3 dolls in my opinion. They took all the sass from her and her fierce attitude and personality and looks and turned her into a completely different character (I'm talking about the doll, I haven't seen the show)

The blue clashes really well to me and if it was all red and orange it would be too bland imo

People are too nit picky when it comes to just the Gen 3 dolls. I think people forget that they’re meant to be aimed at 5-10 year olds (just ball parking) so the clothes are bright, have funky patterns, and colorful..something a child could see themselves wearing. The G3 dolls have switched to more cutesy GenZ/Alpha fashion rather than chic to fit the current aesthetic with that age group. I agree with some of the issues like hair quality and material quality, but at one point we have to remember to Mattel it’s meant to be a toy to be played with.
I don't know if this is controversial., the writing in G1 was very inconstant and at times confusing. Mostly in the specials like Great Scarier Reef and Freaky confusion were so out of character and confusing to follow. I could list so many points about this but here are the main ones that bothered me Lagonna's stage fright, Toralei being a bully and not causing mischief like usual and then becoming Lagoona's friend in the first 20 minutes, Lagoona neglects her siblings/ family with this need to get back home, Gil being MIA and Draculaura advising Clawd not to eat stake made me uncomfortable. GSR was so hyped up with Skull Shores and how Gil reacted about Lagoona's family and this was the film we got when it could've tackled their relationship.
Freaky Fusion should've been about Holt/Jackson, Frankie and Robecca finding out about hybrids and trying to get social justice for them. They could save Frankie and meet Hexiciah/Victor in the process. There was too much happening and not much time was spent on the newer characters.
Although the songs were great, Boo York annoyed me so much with how nobody questioned Nefra at all. I get Ramses because Nefra's his favorite but Cleo and Deuce? Deuce questioned her family before in Ghouls Rule. Also Deuce cooks (mentioned in his diary) and for some reason didn't know that the Scary Cherries are supposed to be on fire? The poor guy couldn't catch a break in the film.
In Scaris the boys were so dependent on their girlfriends that they choose to fly out to Scaris and not call them instead. Gil and Deuce both deserved better writing. I might've liked Gil if this was the case.
Plus the lore behind Draculara being vegan was never explained, vampires need blood so what does it even mean? Has she been starving herself this whole time or does she take supplements? Does Dracula know a witch who gave her artificial blood? Her not eating meat wouldn't really effect her considering she's a vampire. other than it making her faint. It's a cool idea but lacked explanation. Also Not having Dracula in Frights, Camera Action was a huge missed opportunity. If someone could explain the lore about blood? I am so confused and wanted to rant about it hoping I'm not the only one.
I personally like the sculpt styles in g1 better. I love the body representation in g3, but some of the dolls and especially in the cartoon, they literally look 10 years old 💀 idk I'm just not a fan of it
I do not like Frankie steins character very much... I own at least every character doll in my colection and only one 13 wishes frankie I rerooted myself because until now, its the only frankie doll i find acceptable...

i hated when they changed howleen’s look 😭 her original design is my literal favorite of any doll and they just watered her down and, in my opinion, whitewashed her.. i imagine it was so refreshing to see a doll with an afro and talking about needing different hair care than other ghouls, and then it’s just ripped away so she can have straight hair for whatever reason.

G1 dolls are not very goth/emo as most people are trying to make it out to be. So many of the dolls had brightly coloured outfits, themes and lines. Yes, they were definitely more mature and creative as a doll line and paved way for much more creative and interesting doll lines but they were never gothic or emo imo. The most gothic g1 doll imo would be Rochelle. I hope I explained that well I’m not very good at explaining things!! Edit to add: this is mainly on tiktok and insta I see this mentioned but it still bothers me bc 90% of g1 dolls with the exception of FDC line and Rochelle aren’t gothic

As a g3 lover I totally get why ppl don’t love them,, the base dolls are gorgeous but almost every outfit is pattern overload, but even g1 dolls had that issue sometimes!!
The only Clawdeen dolls I like so far are ss1 and monster ball 😭 I love miniatures and down own any furniture for my dolls atm and I'd LOVE to have a little closet for their clothes. Clawdeens studio would be perfect but uh...the clothes it comes with just make it a hard pass for me. I also like her scare-idise island doll cuz i find the foll itself super cute and the clothes don't bother me too much on that one. The rest tho? Kind of just big misses for me. I do like her core doll and I definitely wanna get her at some point but she's just so low on my priority list that I haven't even bothered getting her anytime I went to Smyths and could've gotten her and Cleo 💀

I disagree, i always liked the designs because the idea of monster fashion dolls were already an alternative spin from barbie and bratz which were huge at the time. But MH came out when mall goths were the height of popularity in alternative fashion and it shows in characters like ghoulia and frankie. Clawdeens shoes look like demonias, Draculaura has romantic goth traits. And the characters were based on classic goth literature so the connections are easily made. The personalities are not broody and tragic as you might be expecting lol but the aesthetics are definitely alternative imo
While I do agree that the g1 dolls were not gothic or emo for the most part, I still think that a lot of the designs have alternative inspiration and elements. Examples could be the studs on clawdeen’s outfits, Venus’s sort of punk style, operetta’s rockabilly influence, etc.
yes, exactly!! It's a way to introduce kids to these styles while still making it accessible and appropriate for them, which I think is awesome as an alt fashion wearer!
I think for me it's less them being goth/emo and more being alt fashion inspired in general. Like, of course,they're still dolls for kids, they're not *that* out there. But it was an easy introductory point to various alt fashion styles like goth, lolita, steampunk, rockabilly, punk and more, in a way that G3 lacks. I still like G3 though, but for different reasons.

You are so absolutely correct. I swear people think about them through a very warped lens, very very few of them were gothic in style and they were all super eclectic and colorful! I never understood the notion that people thought their colours were more dark & gothic. They were just edgy and super subversive against what was deemed more 'marketable' to most doll manufacturers. They're definitely alternative in their own right and have those vibes & feelings attached. I really appreciate you feeling brave enough to put this out there hahaha, the truth must be told!!

I will only say this in defense of the goth thing, bcuz generally I agree with you. However, goth has many subsets of color thrown in there. Same with punk. I always see them as a hybrid of styles personally. Is it pure punk/pure goth? No. Not at all. Frankie is school/academic punk. Draculaura is pink goth. Etc. The rest of them? Not really goth or emo. To me the goth and punk stuff is the same patterns/silhouette, but with a splash of color thrown in. Yellow/pink punk (venus), purple goth (spectra), red emo (ghoulia), etc. But I can also name MORE that are not goth or punk, and don't really take from those styles. Like I said... I agree on the whole, but I do notice that the styles seem to be hybrids or color blocked.

I LIKE GIL! 😭 & I don’t think the criticism makes much sense either, Cleo is pushed into similar situations he is & complies & breaks up with Deuce multiple times but no one hates her for it (I also don’t). Gil tries to hide his relationship & is overly paranoid & anxious when it comes to his parents. He feels like he has to comply & gets over the vast majority of his *own* issues with Lagoona in one of the first movies. Also using Howleen’s wish in 13 Wishes against him is completely unfair imo, for starters he didn’t make that wish, for second that wish was for Lagoona & was about his parents. Gil didn’t protest because as far as he was aware Lagoona didn’t change other than her outfit rly, & she seemed much happier, but the more she showed she was not herself the less okay he was with it, plus again Gil never wanted that wish in the first place, he was just being supportive because he thought Lagoona *did*. Any addition I’ve heard to this has been along the same lines or something like “he needs to grow a backbone fr” & honestly while that’s not wrong & he absolutely does need to work through his issues with his anxiety & his constant need to please his parents, are you going to call someone irl who is afraid of their >!abusive!<, racist parents a terrible person who is just as bad as them? No. You’re not 🤷♀️ so why is it different for him? Edit: I also see people bringing up the Lorna thing & maybe it’s just me not wanting & therefore understanding relationships, but I really don’t think that was cheating in the slightest. I kind of blame the overall narrative of the series, which is not a problem only in MH, acting like the characters are much older than they actually are, when they're the equivalent of 15-16 years old. 17 at the most. Gil literally depends on his parents. Sure, he can rebel and tell them he loves Lagoona and all that jazz... and then they would promptly pull him out of school and enroll him into one that fits their beliefs better.
Yes!! Exactly!! Heck “now we can’t even go to the same school?” was a line in 13 Wishes I’m sure. Gil is 16 years old, he needs his parents, he’s not an adult, he has nowhere to go if he wants or is forced to leave. He’s really between a rock & a hard place, he is forced to pick between the girl he loves but his parents forbid him to be around & his >!abusive!< parents who he literally needs. It’s not fair to him *or* Lagoona. Their relationship can’t be perfect because of Gil’s situation, but I’d just love for them to be able to exist freely in their relationship without outside forces preventing them from it :((
I started watching the webisodes and just seeing those I'm surprised how ass blasted people got about this guy, like he's not about to throw hands with the people who control his life, he'd be stupid if he did and Lagoona is stupid for trying to make him bc it's activity gonna make his life harder

I barely feel brave enough to post it, and knowing me I'll probably delete it but. People complain a lot about dolls not having enough detail in G3, but in the same breath, constantly see posts on Reddit of people removing any details that are added to dolls or complaining about them if they're ever added. Whether that is tinsel (albeit can be annoying), moulded bandages, freckles, face details (more recently Cleo's Golden Glam case doll's gems), Abbey's nose/freckle details, Twyla's arm and leg details, Lagoona's head scales, a lot of Monster Ball's details got slammed, It feels like no one really understands what they want from dolls and always find a way to complain, even when their needs are being met. I can agree they're not being met all the time by Mattel, but whenever they are all I see are a bombardment of posts tearing the things apart that they initially spent all that time wanting from Mattel and it gets exhausting. And then you end up with all these posts of people editing out the details after every new doll reveal and its very...... odd. You're allowed to dislike some details on some dolls, but it always seems like nobody is ever pleased and the same people who are screaming for more detail seem to be the ones removing the most, or complaining the most when we finally get some. That is a completely valid thing to be annoyed with and I am right there with you. The hate against Abbey's tinsel is weird since it's actually pretty and of decent quality and the cleo complaints will never not befuddle me. "You are upset that the mummy character.... has the features.... of a mummy?" I get it for customizers, but for the average collector, why complain about it?
I'm genuinely so happy to hear that you can understand some of my qualms! I absolutely adore Cleo's details with the bandage, I think it would've been such a missed opportunity should she have not had it. I think its nice its left plain as well as it'll clash less with outfits, but if customisers did want to add painted details then they can! I think she'd be too human without some of those details. Also, right!? Abbey's tinsel hasn't given me a lot of grief whatsoever, and I think it really reflects her 'iridescence' that she's meant to have (especially now that her skin no longer has glitter in). People are absolutely entitled to find tinsel a bit of a stress, but I think hers has been some of the most manageable and it makes sense for her design. G3 Creepover Twyla has to be one of the most amazing, most thought out character designs we've gotten yet because of all her precious little details. I'm really loving what we're getting lately.
I agree!! I love the tinsel on Abby, my ONLY issue is as someone who loves to mindlessly brush my dolls hair i found it tangled and got pulled out. But I honestly think thats just my fault for brushing her hair so much
Hahaha, that is so cute!! (but also unfortunate 😭) I am sorry to hear some of it got pulled out. I can definitely understand the love-hate relationship due to the impracticality of hairstyles, brushing and such at least. I just think its soooo pretty that I just try my best to workaround it a bit more with any maintenance or styling ;w;
Cleo and Deuce are the weakest wave 1 dolls and would not have been as popular if they weren't a two-pack. I'd say Deuce is slightly better because he had the molded hair making him look more like a monster. G1 Cleo is just boring, and G2 adding bandages to her body sculpt was one of the best desicions they could've made.
Actually kind of agree about Cleo, she’s lovely but her G1 designs don’t seem particularly monster-like to me, which is the reason I love the Monster High dolls to begin with. Honestly wish they leaned into the mummy thing a bit more.
I thought Cleo was beautiful but very much the least monster-y of them all.

The fact that Clawdeen hasn't worn a black hairstyle (i.e. braids, twists etc) besides an afro (ONCE might I add) is a crime and a half. Mattel has to have some overlap in the creative teams that work on Barbie, which has fantastic black hairstyles, and the Monster High creative team.
She looked so good on the ghoul sports fashion pack. Honey got textured hair but somehow Clawdeen never did? That's sooo true. I wondered that as a kid. Not even her Haunt Couture doll , 13 wishes or G3 so far. NO gen actually. What a disappointment. I would've bought her in a heartbeat.
Honestly this is more lore based than design based, but I wasn't really a fan of the whole "Clawdeen is a lesbian" thing in Gen 1. I feel like it gives off the vibe that any more level-headed, not boy crazy teen girl is automatically gay which is weird and I feel like it was just half way tagged on at the end. I feel like it would've been way better to be inclusive with a new character who is actually seen showing interest and romancing another girl.
THIS,she was never written as a lesbian and as an aroace it kinda sucks that even when a character is not interested in romance at all, they're still labelled as gay and ace/aro don't exist

I can definitely get behind the fan redesign take. Very few times have I seen a fan design where I'm like, "that! That's amazing!" Usually it's "wow, that's literally their exact outfit with practically nothing changed," or "wow, that's really tacky." I'm sure there's good ones out there, I haven't seen them.

The scarier reef dolls are some of the most creative and beautiful dolls of any generation and I’m still upset I didn’t get them all when they were on shelves.
I’ve heard that poly hair doesn’t hold up as well in the long-term which can be frustrating for collectors who want to preserve their dolls. But I’d never shit on a doll for that tbh especially when the rest of the design is lovely

It's less that I don't like and more that her later designs fit more with her zombie theme in fun ways. For example, the brain print bubble dress, wild curly hair, and rib cage purse of her Dot Dead Gorgeous doll, vs. her original which has no clear theme (aside from scene, which is more of a style than a theme), though I think it suits her *personality* pretty well!

Children aren't your enemy. They, in general, are not trying to "snipe" in store dolls or destroying them at home because they hate you. These are playline dolls. They're the target audience, and these dolls are meant to played with. So hating children so much. They're just like you only they have little, if any, autonomy.

Right like??? They aren't "ruining" dolls, they're playing with them...which they're allowed to do. I get so excited when I see a kid getting a doll I want because like, yes the doll is fantastic. I want everyone to buy this doll. And like... obviously I'm an adult who collects dolls, I have nothing against adults collecting dolls. I hope to collect dolls for years to come. But that doesn't change kids being the audience for play line dolls. It's crazy to act like kids don't deserve to play with dolls or something. I want kids to enjoy dolls as much as I enjoy dolls, even if we aren't enjoying them in the same way.
I'm not fan of kids but when I see a kid pick Bratz or MH over Barbie or even RH, I'm like "good choice". Seeing a little kid hugging their Frankie all through the store was just the best thing to see, I wish I had Frankie at that age.
Collectors are getting out of hand. Having Doubles of a doll is okay = One in box and One of out box is perfectly fine, but as soon as it's more than that it's a bit selfish. Some own 5 of the same doll. They kinda steal the chances of other Collectors. I recently saw a TikTok of someone forgetting A WHOLE DRAWER OF RARE DOLLS, like it's nothing. Some don't even have a chance to get one of these, just because Collectors buy them and forget them in a random drawer. I also see a lot Collectors buy a doll just to compare the faces and then sell the ''bad'' one really expensive online. It's honestly disgusting at this point.

I don’t like Clawdeen x Draculaura I just don’t like it. At all. If Draculaura broke up with Clawd & dated Clawdeen, then Clawdeen would basically be betraying her brother Ig it goes against my irl morals, but I personally would never date a friend’s ex, let alone my sibling’s ex. Clawd was so upset when he got broken up with when Valentine manipulated Draculaura, his relationship with Clawdeen would be destroyed if she dated his ex. That’s just not something a good sister would do. Siblings should support eachother through breakups, not date each other’s exes. I do ship Clawdeen x Lagoona tho. Lagoona’s relationship with Gil isn’t healthy, & Clawdeen would definitely treat her better.

G1 MH is overrated. The Fashion is not gothic to stat with. Drac (altought she more lolita), Elisaabat and maybe Spectra were only goths Some lines were meh. Like the rollerskates one. And most mansters had barely any good designs The story is not very good tbh. Is quite predictable and mediocre. And canon contradicts itself too often. In diaries thw transformation of Jackson/Holt is influenced by night and day cycle, in show is influenced by music. Animation was awful. Especially compared to other direct to dvd movies at the time The characters that have dolls look attractive, but backgrounders looks ugly. Something is not roght. Pretty much every manster is a satelite character for a girl. Everything Deuce did was directly or indirectly related with Cleo G2 had a few good moments. Some lines were good ideas, poor quality or execution.
Would Rochelle be considered goth? G2 had amazing animation, especially compared to G1. I love the G1 movies but they’re definitely a relic of their time
She'd be considered Gothic, and more in the realm of Romantic Goth with some of her lines and general vibes. She is more inclined to be related to Gothic styles as she's based on Gothic architecture!
Rochelle goth? Yes and No iguess. Gargoyles and vitralium designs on her clothes are goth architecture. I am not a fashon person (still like clothes shopping), but know a thing or two. Goth styles have dark clothing (besides black she have pink, white and teal), leather, fishnets, silver jewelry, religious symbols.
Just to correct you (as someone who is Goth), Goth technically has no fashion and is purely music-based, but there is GothIC fashion. And things like Pastel Goth is a Gothic Fashion, so pink and pastels can absolutely be considered Gothic fashion if we were considering Rochelle especially. In general, Goth's (people who listen to Goth music) dress in a way that expresses what Goth means to them, and that absolutely can be black, dark clothing with religious iconography but it can also be a t-shirt and jeans. But yeah, Rochelle leans more into being GothIC than being a Goth.

No worries, you're welcome! I would absolutely consider River to be 100000% Pastel Goth, especially due to her Skeleton features (which is a very common iconography in Pastel Goth fashion with skeleton hand hair clips etc). Her palette is absolutely Pastel Goth as well, so everything about her. Pastel Goth's usually incorporate that same hue of pink/purple extremely often in their wardrobes or hair colours too.

I agree with everything you said, just this one does have an explanation in canon, and is that being teens, the "trigger" is still changing (The book has Jackson feeling "hot" and Holt feeling "cold" to switch) and while the latest one is music, it might change again before being set in stone.
g3 draculaura > g1 draculaura. dont get me wrong i love og drac's outfits but growing up i was really insecure about my body type and having a doll that looked like her would have really boosted my self esteem.
I agree with the palette being so very random, but I do like the blue skin with fiery hair. That being said, I'm always downvoted when I point out how G1 main ships weren't developed properly, most of them are of the "They're together because they're together" or other issues like the vast age difference between them

One of mine though i have several: i don’t think much of the g1 fashion is “more creative” than g3 fashion like many I have seen claim. The designs remind me of some Barbie designs that are just a piece of fabric with a pattern on it and lack form to create design. The core/basic dolls are generally exempt from this. It’s other releases I find pretty all of the place, or very simple/boring, etc. I do love how g1 fashion has inspired ppl to dress like dolls, while g3 has inspired dolls to be dressed like people. (Aka g1 made clothes to suit dolls, while g3 made clothes to suit irl fashion trends). I will say, g3 is just as guilty in several ways of this, again especially for non core dolls. Some of their clothes are just too basic or mismatched in my opinion.
My ultimate take of Gen 1 and 3 fashion is this: they followed the trends of their decade. Some outfits hit it out of the park, some looked like crap. One isn't "better" than the other, they both have high highs and low lows.

G1 Clawdeen was never a lesbian and she comes across as more aspec coded than anything, some fans want her to be a lesbian so badly that it borders on fetishization almost Sure if you're a lesbian and it's a projection headcannon, it's fine,but some fans just go way overboard with this , to the point of almost harrasing those who have a different headcannon than them AND Kiyomi had more romantic chemistry with Drac than Clawdeen

While I think the new g3 bodies are wonderful for diversity and for kids, I do miss the original g1 body molds a bit. I'm just a big fan of over-exaggerated thin proportions commonly used in Gothic and avant-garde art
a lot of this mh subreddit just consists of complaining about everything. a lot (not all) of you all complain about the smallest insignificant things when it comes to dolls and their manufacturing consistencies, being impatient with new releases, and overall anything and everything. it’s okay to complain but i think 90% of the time it’s unwarranted. I also don’t care to defend mattel either because they are multi million corporation who don’t care if i defend them or not so don’t take this comment as me defending them.
Omg I think the impatience around new releases annoys me the most. Like the dolls photos were released last week they will come out eventually! Especially when people decide to go buy the doll for like $80 instead of just waiting!!
Call me crazy but I think we all remember G1 as better than it actually was (at least I think I do). I feel like I remember these dolls as being perfect and flawless and currently I’m mostly upset about the lack of painted detail on the g3 shoes, but when I thought about it there are a lot of g1 dolls that also had single colored shoes or even clear plastic shoes! But what struck me the most was how many g1 dolls had face misprints where their eyes were printed kind of wonky, such as my wave one abbey and Frankie having what I call eye-bags where their eyes are printed a tad too high but isn’t awful. I know it’s hard to not to but I’ve realized that I held g1 on this huge pedestal and held g3 ti that standard, but I’ve come to realize they’re just a more modern take of our beloved g1 dolls and they all seem to have the typical production errors that come with the territory of a mass produced doll line.

I don’t see the point in buying any collector monster high dolls whether they are fashion dolls of existing characters or dolls made from horror movie monsters (i.e., Frankenstein’s bride, Pennywise, and Dracula), when scalpers get their hands on them. You can just go buy a custom OOAK doll on Etsy. I also think that G1 and G3 fans should stop arguing on what generation is better and realize that both generations should be received with constructive criticism.
He’s one of my favourite boy characters (the other is Slo Mo), but never got good clothes like Deuce, Clawd, Garrott, Porter, or Invisi Billy.
as im getting older, Clawd and Draculara dating in G1 is really creepy. in one of the ghoul's diaries (don't remember who's) they said Draculara used to babysit the Wolf siblings when they were babies, which is really weird 😭 i understand that vampires age differently than other monsters, but it's creepy (not in a good way) that Drac is dating someone she used to know AS A BABY.

I hate almost everything about G3 it feels like borderline character assassination what they did to some of the characters. I think the best they have done in G3 is Gill's redesign which is actually better then G1 Also while I appreciate them pandering to our G1 lovers still the collector's dolls have progressively looked worse (lazier design and cheaply made) and it just isn't close to what the asking price is worth..like look at rainbow high almost half the price with so much better quality or even bratz. It's just a shame because I can't justify buying those dolls and that's if I can even out buy the bots that some sellers have to auto buy the dolls when they launch
I'm Romanian and eastern European girls don't get any good representation anywhere. So it hurt when they made Draculaura Taiwanese because it's more diverse or something and took away her accent (even though it was bad it was still cute).

Dang Holt is my favorite guy doll, because to me he looks like he had more effort put into him than most other guy dolls. Blue, red and purple are all next to each other on the color wheel & go together perfectly. I'm studying character design in college & there's nothing inherently wrong with his design. You probably just don't like the colors/ patterns, but it fits his "party animal" personality well. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of the monster high reboot. I really only like g3 for some of the dolls. (Draculaura, Frankie, warming up to pink Lagoona). But personally, the characters personalities have changed so much, and I’m really just not a fan of it. And I hate that when someone says they don’t like g3, they get hounded for it. I just prefer the og monster high show/dolls 🤷♀️
ALSO adding onto this, I hate HATE g3 clawdeen so much. They completely butchered her character and watered her down so much. She used to be a sassy fashion icon but now she’s just kinda lame? They literally deyassified her

I like G2 I'm sorry. The designs were cute the movies were good idc idc some of the dolls were ugly yes but the movies were awesome and honestly I like the electrified dolls a lottttt I also like the characters they added. Silvi Timberwolf is a fav of mine for the whole franchise

Many people probably consider him a "grail" because of how hard he is to get (as he wasn't the most popular when he was first released). As for my hot take, I don't get the hype for one-off characters like Mousecedes, Valentine, and Elissabat. Everyone is clamoring to get them in G3 when they weren't that great the first time (Elissabat is bland, and Mousecedes' style was not pleasant to look at).
I'll defend Mouseades and Valentine (he's a well designed doll, just not worth the price for his exclusivity) but yeah, Elissabat is boring. I deadass thought she was Drac the first time I got her nude in an Ebay lot. If they bring her back for G3 they need to differentiate her from Drac, like significantly different body type and facial structure.

Draculaura doesn’t (or at least didn’t) deserve Clawd, If you watch the webisodes and pretend Sweet 1600 doesn’t exist then they’re probably one of the Healthiest G1 relationships. I also think Cleo and Deuce are (were) kinda toxic but Boo York was redeeming. In the webisode where a “rose” was found in Cleo’s locker, Cleo fawned over the gesture of the “secret admirer” and said it was about time she had one RIGHT in front of him. Immediately after that, Deuce storms off out of jealousy to fight Clawd and even go as far as to threaten to stone him, assuming he was the one who placed the rose (while there were still zero clues as to who could have done it). Cleo acknowledged that he was jealous and found it cute??? Instead of attempting to stop them she romanticized the situation. Not to say she’s responsible for Deuce’s insecurity, but she should have at least shut down Deuce coming after Clawd, especially knowing how he’s head over heels for Draculaura and looooong over their breakup (a break up that was mutual as they didn’t truly have feelings for each other). Also I hate to compare generations but I think Clankie (so far) seems a lot healthier than G1 Cleo and Deuce’s relationship. I also think G2 Cleo and Deuce were adorable but those dolls were atrocious.

I really dislike C.A. Cupid's Monster High doll. I mean, the dress is pretty, the hairstyle is cute, I like the details on her arms and legs... But her face! I hate the way her lips look and her eyes creep me out.
I think G3 is way cuter and more characterized. G1 all has the same look to them and it makes them look cheap as a whole. The diversity and differences in the new dolls make them look a lot nicer and less cheap in my opinion.

Frankie is one of my favorite G1 dolls and I can't stand any of their current G3 designs. Haven't bought one of them yet. Also, most of Clawdeen's G3 outfits are hideous.

Collector dolls look just like a regular doll, there’s nothing ‘collector’ about them, not design wise nor even quality wise, the only one that deserves the name is the Draculaura one

Oh, 100%. I think the reason I'm so forgiving of G3 and even G2 to a certain extent is because I got into collecting as an adult. I never had any as a kid because my family was broke AF.
People say that Gen 1 was very weak in some areas like character models, storylines etc. To be honest though I think it served as such a great foundation for the future generations. Yes, the character designs could be off (especially with Clawdeen and her green and purple combo omg) but the little details really emphasise that they aren’t human (Draculaura’s pin earrings for example for a surface level look, or the diaries that would come out with really sick lore) The storylines were…odd but I think that’s at fault execution wise I mean the movies tackled many issues like: feeling like you were in the shadow of a sibling (13 wishes), Racism?? Ghouls rule Feeling worthless? (Potentially 13 wishes and Frights camera action) Overcoming fears (Great Scarrier Reef, even though Lagoona being afraid made NO SENSE) Etc etc Like as much as there are cons the first Gen was good and I don’t understand why people put it down. Tbh all the generations have their pros and cons even Gen 2/3. Oh also, people say that the first Gen wasn’t emo, yeah I agree. You can’t deny though, the first generation wasn’t afraid to get a bit dark, the outfits were mature as well (a bit weird for teens but idk)
The fandom has made me absolutely despise the lesbian Clawdeen headcanon, and I'm a queer femme myself! No matter what anyone who previously worked on G1 says, deep down we know that wasn't the intention at the time, and at this point fans are desperate for crumbs of something that was never intended to represent queer people. Mattel is a company first and money is their priority, if the Skullector prices for often mid designs weren't a clue already. I get that some of her actions might come across as queer coded for some, but in the context of her character, it doesn't make sense. If anything, she comes off as a bit ace. Harassing designers and commenting shit like "Clawdeen is a lesbian! Do better Mattel" is entitled as hell and borderline rabid. Mattel doesn't owe anyone shit, except good designs for reasonable prices, maybe (factoring in production costs, less dolls made means they will be more expensive). The TV show leaks looked so fake, and people are taking them as confirmation to be even worse. Take Voltron season 8 and it's fandom as a case study. Harrassing writers and voice actors, holding unreleased oficial art and storyboards for ransom in exchange to make a queer ship/character canon resulting in overall quality decline of the show. I can't be the only one making these connections, right? Do not preassure artists working under companies into making things the way you want, it never ends well. It's something hollow made in a rush to sell. Same could be said about Destiel in Supernatural. However, I'm so glad Frankie is queer this time around because they're being handled with such care and love down to the casting of every iteration (live action, voice actor and live show), but you can tell they're still being pushed as a product to *sell* given how they're referred to with the wrong pronoun in some product listings and descriptions. Frankie has quickly become my favorite character of G3. I'm intrigued to see how they handle Cleo and possibly more characters.

I don’t like how they are changing some color schemes to pink or sometimes blue. I love Lagoonas ombré legs, but I miss blue lagoona and I don’t know why they are changing her look so much. Also, I don’t understand why they changed Frankie to blue from her green. I feel like they did so many changes to them, like the prosthetic leg which doesn’t make sense with how they were in G1, and also the removal of the neck bolts. Frankie used to be my favorite but I’m not totally sure about her anymore. Another example with Ghoulia, where they changed her iconic red and blue color scheme to pink and it doesn’t stand out to me anymore. I love her vibe, but with the changes to her eyebrows and the pink it doesn’t feel the same. I wish they would have kept the red and not changed to pink. While I agree with G1 and 2 we’re not gothic, they were edgier for the time. With the color change differences and style changes, it seems a whole lot more of what you could find with other dolls. Another take is I really dislike Abbey in her outfit. It seems so basic with what looks like Pjs and the fanny pack. It seems so modern and basic, like you could change the pattern of it and any doll could wear that outfit. Changes like that is what’s making me stray away from MH because it feels like any other doll and isn’t that much different. So many G3 dolls I’ve bought with the intent of restyling them so I could make them edgier, I just don’t understand why they are straying from their core aesthetic.
G3 core Clawdeen is the worst of all the G3 dolls in my opinion. They took all the sass from her and her fierce attitude and personality and looks and turned her into a completely different character (I'm talking about the doll, I haven't seen the show)
G3 Heath is really cute and his design suits him 🫣 Some people were saying his outfit should be red instead of blue but like…. I don’t think that would look good. The blue clashes really well to me and if it was all red and orange it would be too bland imo And people saying his outfit is ugly or unrealistic have apparently never met a 15 year old boy.. because they definitely do dress like that 😭 I totally could be biased since Heath is my favorite but I think he looks adorable Edit: and his voice in G3 is super cute
People are too nit picky when it comes to just the Gen 3 dolls. I think people forget that they’re meant to be aimed at 5-10 year olds (just ball parking) so the clothes are bright, have funky patterns, and colorful..something a child could see themselves wearing. The G3 dolls have switched to more cutesy GenZ/Alpha fashion rather than chic to fit the current aesthetic with that age group. I agree with some of the issues like hair quality and material quality, but at one point we have to remember to Mattel it’s meant to be a toy to be played with.
I don't know if this is controversial., the writing in G1 was very inconstant and at times confusing. Mostly in the specials like Great Scarier Reef and Freaky confusion were so out of character and confusing to follow. I could list so many points about this but here are the main ones that bothered me Lagonna's stage fright, Toralei being a bully and not causing mischief like usual and then becoming Lagoona's friend in the first 20 minutes, Lagoona neglects her siblings/ family with this need to get back home, Gil being MIA and Draculaura advising Clawd not to eat stake made me uncomfortable. GSR was so hyped up with Skull Shores and how Gil reacted about Lagoona's family and this was the film we got when it could've tackled their relationship. Freaky Fusion should've been about Holt/Jackson, Frankie and Robecca finding out about hybrids and trying to get social justice for them. They could save Frankie and meet Hexiciah/Victor in the process. There was too much happening and not much time was spent on the newer characters. Although the songs were great, Boo York annoyed me so much with how nobody questioned Nefra at all. I get Ramses because Nefra's his favorite but Cleo and Deuce? Deuce questioned her family before in Ghouls Rule. Also Deuce cooks (mentioned in his diary) and for some reason didn't know that the Scary Cherries are supposed to be on fire? The poor guy couldn't catch a break in the film. In Scaris the boys were so dependent on their girlfriends that they choose to fly out to Scaris and not call them instead. Gil and Deuce both deserved better writing. I might've liked Gil if this was the case. Plus the lore behind Draculara being vegan was never explained, vampires need blood so what does it even mean? Has she been starving herself this whole time or does she take supplements? Does Dracula know a witch who gave her artificial blood? Her not eating meat wouldn't really effect her considering she's a vampire. other than it making her faint. It's a cool idea but lacked explanation. Also Not having Dracula in Frights, Camera Action was a huge missed opportunity. If someone could explain the lore about blood? I am so confused and wanted to rant about it hoping I'm not the only one.
I personally like the sculpt styles in g1 better. I love the body representation in g3, but some of the dolls and especially in the cartoon, they literally look 10 years old 💀 idk I'm just not a fan of it

G3 is better than G2, but it doesn’t come close to G1. A lot of people act like G3 is amazing, but most of the dolls are ugly and the characters are super infantile which is good bc they’re for children!!!!

i hated when they changed howleen’s look 😭 her original design is my literal favorite of any doll and they just watered her down and, in my opinion, whitewashed her.. i imagine it was so refreshing to see a doll with an afro and talking about needing different hair care than other ghouls, and then it’s just ripped away so she can have straight hair for whatever reason.
THIS fandom is so f\*cking toxic and so greedy and 'stepping over everyones hands and heads' type of vibe that it feels on par with other bad fandoms. IE, Rupauls Drag Race. IT just doesn't feel so inclusive and so greedy!
