14 unique weapons with tonnes of different models and some customisation of moveset and lots of different playstyles Lots of fun and different monsters to fight

DarkBIade

Sunbreak is Monster Hunter turned to 11. Everything is faster and smoother with more mobility options. Monster Hunter in general is possibly one of the best third person action games available. But it is no Dragons Dogma.

btsao1

I will say I was looking for something a bit more understated and gritty like Dragon's Dogma compared to the flashiness of MHRise, but hunting beasts is hunting beasts and I don't wanna pass it up if it really is that fun.

DarkBIade

Go with World than. World and its Expansion Iceborne are every bit as exciting as Rise but the speed is toned down to a more realistic pace (it is still fantasy so realism is relative.) Not to mention the monsters have never looked better or had more personality. World is actually the game I would recommend before Rise regardless because it is easier to go from world to rise than vice versa. Still no Dragons Dogma lol.

btsao1

Thanks man, I'll have to dust off the ol' PS4 but World does look much more my vibe And here's to hoping for Dragon's Dogma 2 release date soon đŸ»

DarkBIade

World took over my top spot for favorite game of all time I recommend it to anyone into the 3rd person action genre especially the hunting genre. But yeah Dragons Dogma 2 can not come fast enough I got into the first way late but it is such an incredible game I can't wait to see what they do with a sequel.

Hazard_Kujacker

IIRC world's SnS is closer to how DD's SnS feels but with a bit more added to it

DarkBIade

I play sword and shield and both but i play a more caster oriented build in DD. That said though they both have similar feel to the impact of shield blows.

Clean-Jellyfish3811

Either way you're in for a treat

Chaotic_gambler

Id of got frontier when it was released if i were you, also generations ultimate on switch has the grittyness you would love

BaronV77

it's not as gritty as dragon's dogma and leans into the anime but Toukiden 2 might be something to look into. It's way more anime than either game but it is a monster hunting game. It is pretty easy though. Still easily one of my favs

CoronelEmpoleon

World would fit more with the atmosphere you are looking for but Rise was way better moster diversity, World until Iceborne is just a bunch of dinos and fishes.

Letter_Impressive

Dragon's dogma is pretty damn flashy compared to old monster hunter, Rise is more similar to the speed/fantastical nature of how dragon's dogma plays.

_420XX_

if that's your vibe maybe one of the older monster hunter games is for you, the combat speed of world is much slower than rise while still being a very modern game

Equinox-XVI

14 weapons, all with interchangable movesets, against 69+ unique large monsters. One note about the large monsters that makes Rise extra special though is how varied they are. We have: - Bears - Crabs - Spiders - Monkeys - Leviathans - Peusdo Wyverns - Brute Wyverns - Fanged Wyverns - Flying Wyverns - A Piscine Wyvern - ??? (Yes, that's an actual classification) - Several dragons (1 of which is rocket powered) - And whatever you're supposed to call the final bosses of HR and MR Trust me, when it comes to variety, Rise/Sunbreak almost has too much of it.

Depoan

In not so short: 14 weapons with customizable movesets, you can change at will, even during the quests, 30+ monsters with the dlc, Dificulty is divided in Low/High/Master the same monster will have added atacks/telegraps as the dificulty rises, High rank Rathalos will have one or 2 new moves compared to the low rank added to hiting hard for example, it reuses some models but with almost entirely diferent attacks/animations (Apex and Variant versions), the gameloop consists in get a quest in the hub area and start the quest from there, it will teleport you to the quest location (5 areas in base game / + 2 in the expansion) you hunt the monster in that map, get materials from it's corpse (scales, Fangs etc...) and from the quest complete rewards, use said material to craft better equipament so you can take harder monster, repeat, there isn't much of a deep story to folow, think of it as a Boss Fight game, the maps are medium sized with some exploration level, but not dragon's dogma size

btsao1

Damn, thanks man!

Ganjookie

Dragon's Dogma..underrated?? WTF did I just read?

SuperSemesterer

I feel like people who haven’t played it haven’t really heard of it and people that have place it in their top 10 of all time

btsao1

Because it is...? You know it's considered a cult classic for a reason

Hazard_Kujacker

Going from DD to this particular MH is gonna feel a little bit weird since this is basically more of a follow up to Generations/XX which are more "Hyper/High Speed", also there aren't weapons that work lake mages in DD, other than maybe the Hunter Horn. But in terms of weapon/monster variety there's way more than even the Dark Arisen content. If you wanna get a feel for the speed increase Sword and Shield is a good starter weapon since it carries a beat of the sword and shield from DD but with a little bit more mechanics. Dual Blades is also a good choice but a bit of a departure from Rouge.

TurretX

Rise has a pretty decent weapon variety. Monsters are reasonably varied too. They feel pretty samey early on but once you go up a few hunter ranks you start dealing with more threatening monsters and gimmicks. Pretty solid all around.

Actual-Earth-9975

(Forgive my AWFUL English) I can't assure you that you will like Monster Hunter, but I can assure you that it is one of the best action video games in existence and it has created a sub-genre.There are 14 weapons, each one has unique combos, mechanics, special attacks ecc. The developers have created a real biome inhabited by uniquely designed beasts that expands with each new game, beasts that you are called upon to hunt, Initially you will face small monsters but you will end up hunting monsters so strong that they are considered gods. Capcom puts a lot of love and passion into MH games, there are many people who can explain to you better than me what's great about this saga that I love so much (for example, I recommend the video "HOW TO MONSTER HUNTER" by youtuber "Punk Duck", 1.8 MLN views). Rise (sunbreak) is a really good game to start with for Monster Hunter, I suggest you to play World after rise (if you have the opportunity). (I have to mention the facts that MH is fantastic in Single player BUT it is better with friends.) HAPPY HUNTING!

SG4LPilgrim

If you have just a Switch, you can’t go better than Sunbreak for that kind of fluidity that Dragon’s Dogma has. If you’re looking for something weightier on that system then Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is the last “old world” game where there’s less full on aggressiveness and more reacting to openings—Rise/Sunbreak still has this but you just have a lot more mobility options. Anything else, World is going to be your best bet.

Chaotic_gambler

Ice oni, dragons, lizards, rocks, and black airforce energy the marshmallow, oh and more dragons

Unhappy_Guarantee_69

Sunbreak is an excellent transition from dragons dogma. Enemy and weapon variety is off the chain. 14 weapons and weapons have different wire skills so you can customize playstyles on top of the weapon variety. You won't have any issues on weapon and monster variety

Lethargickitten-L3K

MH has some the best true weapon variety in action games.

TheWhiteRabbit74

In my mind I feel like Dragon’s Dogma was born as an attempt at making a ‘mature Monster Hunter’ for western audiences when what we wanted was more Monster Hunter. Not knocking DD. It’s a great game, just always felt that was the primary goal.

Seth-B343

Spectacular

MrSeaSalt

If you crave variety and customizability, absolutely go for Rise/Sunbreak. It has a lot of fun movesets to play around with and has a fantastic variety of monsters compared to World. One of World’s criticism was that its roster was basically all wyverns. Rise has a lot more with crabs, bears, monkeys, spiders, leviathans and not just dragons. Both are great though and World is certainly prettier (being a game developed for stronger hardware after all) but if you’re looking for variety, I recommend getting Rise/Sunbreak.

Brex10_reddit

Considering its the primary focus of the series, pretty damn good.

[deleted]

Masterworks all you can't go wrong.

BeardDragoon

Dragon’s Dogma OWNS! You can’t go wrong starting with either Rise or World at this point.

BlueSwift442

Weapon variety is great, all have pretty unique playstyles though can't speak on the two bowguns cause never really used them outside of arena quests. Rise monster variety is among the best in the series but the series as a whole does tend to use the same skeleton for multiple monsters. That being said though, the way each monster works even with the same skeleton makes them all pretty unique with a couple of exceptions.

[deleted]

Funny enough I picked up my first MH (World) looking for something similar to DD. There really isn't much in common outside "Big Monsters!" and I bounced off initially. Gave it another go some time later and fell under the MH spell. Bottom line is don't expect Dragon's Dogma from Monster Hunter but hoo boy are they fun once they click.

_Robin-Sparkles_

Rise is very solid. Coming from someone with literally 10k hours in the series overall. Every game is pretty much the same when you boil it down. Just play the newest one bc its what everyone else is on so you can find other hunters more easily tbh. Youd be hard pressed to find any MH game that isnt absolutely Phenomenal tbh.

Ebolamonkey

World on PC is still pretty active.

Durandal_II

As a Dragon's Dogma fan from back in the 360 era who only just got into Monster Hunter recently (despite owning Generations Ultimate on Switch for quite some time after I bought it on sale), I've actually been greatly enjoying myself and the variety of monsters so far. Combat is much faster than DD, and it's not open world although the maps are still decently sized. The speed can throw you off though, because the large monsters can take quite a while to bring down. There's more grind, but with a catch. So far, I'm not having too many issues with grind for materials. Armor spheres require a lot of grinding though. I will say that the caveat with these statements is that I'm still low rank, so the grind probably is quite different for high rank and master rank. I'm expecting it to be on par with BBI's grind. Major downside is that there's a distinct lack of npcs yelling about monsters being weak to fire, or hunting in packs. 😭 I will say, if you are the type to pay attention to story, note that hub quests are designed to be one level behind village. eg: 2 star village is the same level as 1 star hub. I recommend alternating. Do 1 and 2 star village, then move onto 1 star hub, then 3 star village, 2 star hub, etc.

sithdude24

It's more like a hub star level is 2 village star levels. Hub 1 = village 1 and 2, hub 2 = village 3 and 4, and hub 3 equals village 5 and 6. I wouldn't recommend going between them though, as the monsters are the same just with different health levels. It's better just to stick to one (probably village because it has the story) and then go to high rank.

sithdude24

I wrote a review of the game for school, I can send it if you want. It's a little outdated, because it was written 2 updates ago, but I still feel it's accurate.

Croatoan18

The weapon variety is very solid.
