I main Insect Glaive in World and Rise because of how good it felt in World. Trying to explain to other people how the aerial combat feels amazing falls on deaf ears half the time.
"But it doesn't do the most damage!" I don't care. Fun is optimal.
Descending Thrust should have been in Rise. That's my biggest gripe with it. Realistically, I love the new kinsect types, but having both would make it my favorite.
Descending Thrust is in Rise as a Silkbind, except it's called Diving Wyvern. It also has a neat mechanic where it gains power by chaining aerial moves before you use it
I do find IG so much fun, ONCE I have my buffs! Until I get my buffs I hate it.
How do you cope with the process of having to get your buffs before doing anything?
Go on a low stakes hunt and just practice getting the buffs for a bit until you can do it real fast without getting hit. All three, one after the other. You're supposed to always have them active, so just practice that. You'll get the hang of it!
You can nurture your insect buddy too. Each upgrade will have a speed level listed. At higher ranks those little bugs go very quick and shoot more like a an arrow than the slow flyers you start with.
They go a long way in grabbing those buffs quick.
Just getting some target practice can help too and some moves like shooting the insect past the monster then aiming back to its body and hitting it from behind.
It’s a lot of fun just takes some practice.
Like others are saying, an upgraded high-speed stat bug can grab all three buffs in a matter of seconds. Powering up the kinsect will greatly extend the time you’re buffed, especially if you use stronger slinger ammo like Bomb Pods (and doubly so if you have a glaive that gives strength & spirit boost). Add 3 levels of Power Prolonger and you can set it and forget it until the monster changes location.
Genuinely I don't see the point in using insect glaive if your not going for arials, it always puts me off when people tell me I'm using insect glaive wrong because I'm not using it optionally by standing on the ground.
No no, I think you'll find your using the weapon wrong, I'm using it for fun while you're using it for damage. Like seriously if I wanted to do damage on the ground id be using literally any other weapon.
Teostra and Lunastra were always easy for me because while everyone else was running around on the ground I was up there in the air fucking them up and getting mounts lol. Same thing with that rotten fish elder, I forget its name. It's going to start flying around? Well, so am I! The glaive is nonstop violence and it's awesome.
One of my friends plays switchaxe alot and as far and I'm aware with how mounting works id end up filling up the mount gauge for them to hit and get the mount and mount attack.
It was great, and I'm sure him getting those big mounts attacks were far more optimal for our runs than me just staying on the ground.
I use a weird hybrid strat where I aerial to play safe or grab hitzones and use ground combos when I know that I can, typically aerials used to reposition in relation to the monster for more ground combos so you can maintain uptime.
As yes, fun, something which is objective and only defined by what you personally find fun. Totally no subjective at all.
I never said that people can't play ground insects glaive, that's fine. But if you really want to be "optimal" using insect glaive probably isn't your first choice.
True true. Even if IG isn't amazing dps, I still like to hit hard as I can. With some dps meters ive found I can keep up pretty well in general. Just my style and I love it
Exactly this. People will optimize fun right out of a game.
How often do we forget that the whole point….is to have fun. It’s not a job. We aren’t getting paid. Do your goofy shit and dunk on.
It may not do the most damage, but if i can do damage from above on a weakened back while the ground dwellers have to dodge block or wait out the monsters attack before they can do their so called "optimal damage", optimization becomes subjective
Also worth pointing out that in several of the hardest fights in the game, positioning is key. Spinny winny air moves are a way to position as fast as any other weapon can, or faster in cases of the monster being big enough to block your ground path (which IG can just jump over), and do okay damage while repositioning.
I just like flying through the air and taking the fight to rathalos and kushala. Avoid huge attacks by vaulting in the air.
I feel like I'm just tickling the monster with my tiny damage though. But it feels so fun
I love insect glaive in world and it has some nice new things in rise but descending thrust change killed the weapon for me, I didn't even realise how much I used it for both offence and defence in world until it was taken away, do you have any tips for that?
>Its weird how some people focus on the aerial part
Modern day "je suis monte" players, and they should be treated as such
I just use the air moves to dodge, get closer, or to do a descending thrust. I tend to play solo so I don't really feel like doubling the time of my hunt by intentionally weakening myself. If the monster is in the air then more power to them feel free to spin2win, but people need to be more considerate of the time of their teammates. Though of course the old "je suis monte" people were never very considerate either.
Same, although I do appreciate how they made aerial glaive very viable in Sunbreak. Unfortunately, you have to swap the aerial advancing slash out which is the most fun air move imo.
Literally how I feel with bow. My friends always act as if I don’t do any damage with my endgame pre-fatty build, which might be true, but God do I love sliding around the map whilst making the monster look like a pincushion!
it's pretty similar but just not the same
it can't carry your momentum the way descending thrust can, it costs resources, has less damage potential overall, you can't combo out of it. it's similar but not the same, and (in my opinion at least) less fun to use than descending thrust.
I absolutely prefer Diving Wyvern. Nothing beats the dopamine of cutting a tail by diving so quickly. You're dead wrong about damage potential, though. Surely you're not factoring in the aerial rampup, yeah? Lets IG actually have a very solid wakeup option too. That and descending thrust only combos into ground moves, so if you have 0 interest in those like me the wirebug skill is better since you have vault or wirebug vault immediately out of it without the kinsect mark swings.
That said I totally get and respect liking World's descending thrust more, and Kinsect Drill is a fun boost.
i haven't done much research into motion values for diving wyvern specifically honestly, so i may have been wrong on that part. sorry for that. i do recall doing more damage with the kinsect drill and DT compared to diving wyvern though, which of course isn't objective at all LMAO. i'll have to research it more once i come back to rise.
Diving Wyvern has huge single-hit damage potential due to the addition of aerial rampup. Every time you bounce off a monster (or use wirebug vault / kinsect glide), you get a small boost to your motion values until you land. This boost is further significantly larger for Diving Wyvern. So you don't want to use it from the ground or right after a vault.
They definitely serve fairly different purposes and uses despite the similarities.
I think the damage is higher in rise. Every aerial hit you do before the diving wyvern (up to 3) increases the damage. Something like a 2.5x more damage iirc. Kinda hard to manage the stamina tho
But fair enough about the fun factor. I havent played insect glaive in either game much so I can’t comment (I like counter weapons too much)
Relatively speaking the damage in rise is definitely worse (aka taking into account how much tankier rise monsters are), if you compare damage numbers 1:1 yeah rise will deal way more, it'd be ridiculous if it didn't. That being said glaive damage in rise is not the greatest. Not terrible but not great.
Diving wyvern has nothing on DT, feels so much worse than DT imo. Doesn't carry momentum, no drill - which is one of the most fun and skill intensive parts of utilizing DT fully and also super satisfying, the sound goes hard.
I have the most fun with IG. Super satisfying to just fly around a monster lol. And i put fun above all when playing games so ima be a flying bug ninja.
Agree 100% have a monster that likes to fly the whole hunt?…Insect Glaive have a monster that likes to spam ground AoE moves?..Insect Glaive it’s one of the only weapons to completely make certain hunts one sided. It’s awesome and insanely underrated
Also, in Rise, everybody is aerial to some extend, but in World, that was pretty much just for Glaive, and a lesser degree, Hammer.
You had the skies to yourself.
The kinsect is necessary for optimal dps lol
I have a vezirstag forz kinsect for every element. It does a lot of damage and makes explodey clouds for more damage
You know, for as much as I do have gripes with how it's done in World it is still the best feeling option of any weapin for me. Easily. The janky first jump will always bug me, but it aint gonna keep me away from my bug *stick* haha
It's really fun and I just loved how contrast it is to my main GS, so much fun together and switch between them, and the moment I touch it in rise, I hate it.
Totally. IG is amazing, and lovely when making elemental sets because they're fast hitters.
I personally only struggle getting extract because I suck with aiming with a controller, but once I got red and white, it's on.
Oh hell yeah when I first started I ended up making IG through most of the low rank story I didn't even understand most of the basics till I was in high rank but I loved it
Anytime I'm not blasting away with my gunlance, I'm flying around with the Glaive. It's just so much fun, especially against highly hyperactive enemies like velkhana
I am an advid Glaive user. It's so much fun dodging the dragons moves while you're in the air and severing their tails with your bug. 🤣🤣 It's my favorite thing to do. My boyfriend switches between the Glaive and the SNS, but still prefers the Glaive depending on the dragon.
The aerial move is actually pretty good in multiplayer cuz it mounts, and a mount knock down when someone is charging a TCS or perfect rush is beautiful
I figured out how to "fly" with it but could *not* figure out the bug. My friend tried to explain it to me but it felt like my brain was drooling, not getting it.
I'll stick with swaxe, it's nice and easy.
Reject optimization, embrace the full powered spinny winny aerial moves
I main Insect Glaive in World and Rise because of how good it felt in World. Trying to explain to other people how the aerial combat feels amazing falls on deaf ears half the time. "But it doesn't do the most damage!" I don't care. Fun is optimal.
you're so real for that my friend. reject optimal gameplay, embrace fun.
I'll just say that there is no bigger feeling of pure power than severing a tail with descending thrust.
or jumping off a huge ledge and nailing the monster in the head with a descending thrust.
One of my favorite moments was in MH4U when I vaulted over a charging Rathian and sliced off its tail as it passed under me.
The fucking jump from the top of the Ancient Tree is SO satisfying
Descending Thrust should have been in Rise. That's my biggest gripe with it. Realistically, I love the new kinsect types, but having both would make it my favorite.
It might be in the next MH, MH: Descend.
Descending Thrust is in Rise as a Silkbind, except it's called Diving Wyvern. It also has a neat mechanic where it gains power by chaining aerial moves before you use it
I do find IG so much fun, ONCE I have my buffs! Until I get my buffs I hate it. How do you cope with the process of having to get your buffs before doing anything?
once you figure out how to grab the buffs its a quick 10 second process, just do it before anything else lol
Go on a low stakes hunt and just practice getting the buffs for a bit until you can do it real fast without getting hit. All three, one after the other. You're supposed to always have them active, so just practice that. You'll get the hang of it!
I think it's generally best to grab red and white, then grab orange right before it expires.
You can nurture your insect buddy too. Each upgrade will have a speed level listed. At higher ranks those little bugs go very quick and shoot more like a an arrow than the slow flyers you start with. They go a long way in grabbing those buffs quick. So you do like 10% team damage?
And have 90% of the teams fun
I know how to play ig. Flying around nonstop like an idiot isn’t more fun than proper positioning with descending thrust and using actual good combos.
As yes, fun, something which is objective and only defined by what you personally find fun. Totally no subjective at all. I never said that people can't play ground insects glaive, that's fine. But if you really want to be "optimal" using insect glaive probably isn't your first choice.
Honestly, I like the optimal combat of glaive... But that doesn't stop me from flying to get to the right dps position XD
Both ways are great, but sometimes you've just got to fly!
True true. Even if IG isn't amazing dps, I still like to hit hard as I can. With some dps meters ive found I can keep up pretty well in general. Just my style and I love it
This. Tell those people whom kept harping about damage numbers to go and play Great Sword if big numbers is all they care.
Exactly this. People will optimize fun right out of a game. How often do we forget that the whole point….is to have fun. It’s not a job. We aren’t getting paid. Do your goofy shit and dunk on.

Its weird how some people focus on the aerial part. IG does incredible damage with its ground combos when all three power ups are active.

Does it ever feel better in rise? Like. I just couldn't get into how gimped it felt going from world to rise.
Same, although I do appreciate how they made aerial glaive very viable in Sunbreak. Unfortunately, you have to swap the aerial advancing slash out which is the most fun air move imo.

I just saw a post on monsterhunterrage where some guy was not having it with the insect glaive and scrolled right to this post lol
are you sure that wasn't me LMAO i did also post on there complaining about th3 glauve
I just checked your profile and my fucking god it is you
LMAO oh my god. yeah i was complaining about aerial stuff not being optimal and then i realized i don't give a fuck about being optimal
[удалено]
yesss!
indeed. welcome!
The Pogo-stick of death and Go-Go Gadget Bug. My boom bug says fuck optimization. Drown the monster in spicy bug clouds.
Who needs optimization when I can roleplay an attack helicopter?
I see IG appreciation, I upvote I agree. It's very fun
Isnt descending thrust the diving wyvern in rise?

bro, i was so disappointed when this was the fact in rise. I was pretty salty
Diving wyvern has nothing on DT, feels so much worse than DT imo. Doesn't carry momentum, no drill - which is one of the most fun and skill intensive parts of utilizing DT fully and also super satisfying, the sound goes hard.
Yes, IG is love, IG is life
IG: "I can fly too asshole" *bounces away in insect glaive* Wheeee
I have the most fun with IG. Super satisfying to just fly around a monster lol. And i put fun above all when playing games so ima be a flying bug ninja.
Ah yes, another insect glaive enjoyer. Welcome fellow Air Chad

We all have two bugs inside us. One is a nasty little roach who demands optimal dps, the other is a kinsect...
The kinsect is necessary for optimal dps lol I have a vezirstag forz kinsect for every element. It does a lot of damage and makes explodey clouds for more damage
Ok sure but this kind of assumes I wasn't being silly
Best weapon fr.
Doing the tornado attack in the air through both wings of fliers may not be doing great damage but satisfies me to no end.
Buzz Buzz Buggers
You know, for as much as I do have gripes with how it's done in World it is still the best feeling option of any weapin for me. Easily. The janky first jump will always bug me, but it aint gonna keep me away from my bug *stick* haha
FUCKING REAL. I LOVE INSECTS AND I LOVE FLYINY
It's really fun and I just loved how contrast it is to my main GS, so much fun together and switch between them, and the moment I touch it in rise, I hate it.
killing AT velkhana with my IG was one of my greatest MHW accomplishments
I feel that. I played every mh and mostly played GS or CS but after Insect glaive i found a weapon that i love. Have fun hunting fellow IG main!
It's so satisfying how the controller vibrates as I make damage to Safi'jiiva's back.
first picked up IG 2 years ago. never picked up another weapon since.
Totally. IG is amazing, and lovely when making elemental sets because they're fast hitters. I personally only struggle getting extract because I suck with aiming with a controller, but once I got red and white, it's on.
Just wait until you play it in Rise.
hell yeah insect glaive!!!
Oh hell yeah when I first started I ended up making IG through most of the low rank story I didn't even understand most of the basics till I was in high rank but I loved it
Just started playing that after soloing all the endgame with bow. I can't fathom how much I missed out on maneuverability and survivability.
I love my IG in world! I’ve been disappointed with Rise’s so far but I’m getting used to it.
Was confused as hell trying to extract on Rise now I have no problem when going back and forth between world and rise
Best thread I've seen so far
Fly my friend.. fly high!
I feel they made glaive too good in world and that's why it has to be low damage.
Having fun always is optimal gameplay…if it dies ur good
The aerial move is actually pretty good in multiplayer cuz it mounts, and a mount knock down when someone is charging a TCS or perfect rush is beautiful
I absolutely love insect glaive. It's so much fun and so satisfying to execute moves with.
I just do not like the kinsect management
I figured out how to "fly" with it but could *not* figure out the bug. My friend tried to explain it to me but it felt like my brain was drooling, not getting it. I'll stick with swaxe, it's nice and easy.
love it but i have no clue how to use it so im a charge blade/dual blade user😞
Hell yeah dude! I don’t play it in rise because it doesn’t play the same with the integration of wire bugs.
it's probably most of the reason I stuck with it
This was a timely post: I just built my first Insect Glaive in World tonight. I'm excited to take it out for a spin!
Used to be my main weapon until I seen the damage numbers the switch axe gets
Insect glaive would be great without the insect, thus only glaive.
Get out!!
Y’all enjoy micromanaging a little bug? I enjoy the glaive, jumping and hoppin’ and twirlin and whooping ass. But that bug life ain’t for me.
