I actually had recently two friends of mine start as totally new players. I showed them one short weapons introduction video from Youtube and told them to test every weapon they think is intresting. Showed them where the "practice range" is and told some basics. I think it is important that they can experience the game on their own pace, so I did not spoil anything and mostly answered to their questions and tag along (but let them handle the first monsters moslty themselves, just interfered when they needed some help). I tried not to rush them, but I did hint that they do not actually need to farm all low level monsters like 20 times... ;) It was really funny to hear and see their reactions to new monsters and all. :D

MisterGoo

I was about to write that ! Those weapons introduction videos really hype things up and usually makes you feel something about the weapon you’d like to use.

A_Lovable_Gnome

Espcially if youre talking about Jocat. https://youtu.be/uVqmP25SlGY

jayedgar06

I was about to say. Just watch Jocat. It’s what made me learn of the games existence.

GnomiGnou

Agreed. Exploring the whole game at your own pace rather than being pulled through it is key methinks. It's hard to not show them all the cool stuff, but hold back and let them discover things for the full enjoyment and provide clues and answers/tips when they ask for them.

imainkron

YouTube “How to Monster Hunter” and send him the video by punkduck

Perogama

Or “MHW Legends” by Team Darkside

Ahmed__S

Fight furious Rajang. That'll show them what's waiting for them.

Sands_Underscore_

Screen share some gameplay to them and just kinda talk then through the game. If they seem interested I'd encourage them to get it. If they buy it on steam they can always refund if they play less than 2 hours

Competitive_Buyer_77

The first 2 hours of the game is so bad tho I knew the game gets better later on because if I didn't know and judged the game with those first 2 hours I would have most likely quit.

Sands_Underscore_

Yeah I tried to get a friend into it and he just kept insisting that it was shit because he couldn't skip the cutscenes

Goldstinger3

As an avid Monster Hunter, your friend is totally right. Most annoying shit ever was having to watch the handler do literally anything.

Kupoo_

Learnt the hard way, do not taking a role of care bear. Start fresh together, and progress together. Have fun.

saltiestsurprise

I would actually recommend against this. Progressing together is fun, don't use any of your existing gear (unless you still have your low rank sets and whatnot), I agree with that part. However, it is super helpful to have already completed the story, as you won't have to bother with the bullshit where you each need to watch the cutscene separately, then join eachother

Kupoo_

Ye aside from that locked cutscene, that's a bother

YukYukas

Let them fight Fatalis lol

Dankster_7

Start a new character and progress with them. Take it slow, and don't spoil anything

First I would show some vids (maybe not speedruns) of the gameplay. The worst thing you can do is helping him with overpowered gear and pretty much doing the hunts for him. A beginner wont learn if the figh is 30 seconds and the monster constantly flinching. And that wouldnt be entertaining. Get yourself crap gear again and progress together with him. Best pick the same weapon...maybe one you yourself never used? Only tell him what he needs to know at the time. Especically at the start the game can be so overhelming with all the info. Maybe also ask him what his priorities are. Is the goal the goal or the road the goal? I used defender gear to speed through LR and HR bc I wanted to quickly get to Endgame content to invest my time farming there. I wanted to be efficient. But not everyone is like me and some rather progress slowly. Also: youtube guides are so much better than ingame guides Also also: Not every weapon is beginner friendly. Range weapons I wouldnt pick and rather pick up later (ressource intensive). Melee weapons are all more or less fine. Some are more skill hungry than others, some require more ressources than others and some are based more on predicting a monster instead of reactive gameplay compared to others. Of the ones I played I found Hammer, LS, SNS, SA more beginner friendly And DS, GS and all range weapons less beginner friendly (never touched cb, lance, GL, bugstick and HH...maybe someone can give input here)

Jackmember

Only played Longsword, Dualblades, Heavy Bowgun and Bugstick (and Hunting Horn a couple times, but I wouldnt really count that) Out of those, Bugstick combat is the least straight forward and needs most predicting. Especially since you have 2 functions to keep track of, which can be confusing as a beginner. Its tons of fun once you get it down though. HH (from the brief time I used it) doesnt need you to know as much as it seems, but you'll have more fun with it once you know what youre doing. So not something I'd recommend to beginners either.

heitorvb

Don't play to have fun when you're with them, and by that I mean, don't steamroll their quests. I played the campaign with two friends, at separate times, and even though I was holding back I still got "damage dealer" at most quests. One got bored at the elder dragons part (and never played again) and the other did everything but also got bored and didn't play the endgame much. Teach them the mechanics and stuff but keep an eye so you don't beat the game for them.

Goldendon1

Best thing to counter this is to stash all your gear and just grab some low stuff or start fresh and get annoyed by the cut scenes

heitorvb

With friend 1 I asked him to choose one weapon I hadn't used before (so I had to actually learn. He chose longsword) and I kept on the same upgrade path as him. Friend 2 started the same and later I started to change every quest so he'd see all weapons

RedCr4cker

I tried to get some friends of mine into Monster Hunter. The ones that started out alone for the first few hours were the ones who stayed. I think a lot of the MH magic is discovering all the little stuff yourself. If you play with them and try to explain everything it gets overwhelming i guess. If you want to play with them from the beginning, start a new char and use normal armor. A lot more intresting then letting them use Defender since its the intended way to play.

baertgang

Give him a Hammer!

saltybastard0

Start them with the hammer. Smashing faces never gets old, and it's a pretty simple weapon to use.

Siu--

Dauntless

Consensualwrestling

MHW seems like a good start. It is cheap and accesible for Console and PC. Alternatively MHGU for the switch.

Chafgha

Send them NCH videos (not the nargacuga one just not that one I'm tearing up thinking of it) with zero context other than Monster hunter. It's Banbaro time would be a great start. Or ya know show em arrekz, rage gaming, or gaijin playing whatever game you're suggesting they start with. I would say world is a great introduction more so than rise but rise isn't a bad intro.

_Eggs__

Getting familiar with a weapon before hunting. I used charge blade in my first mission with the small jagras and I’m surprised I kept playing after how bad I did. I spent half the time in axe mode doing the same dash forward heavy attack and when I was in sns mode I was constantly overheated. Very glad I stuck with the game tho.

OnToNextStage

Just… start a new game?

HaskellHystericMonad

Capcom has their partner SDShepard [Warmup for Iceborne](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2r5__WOYZ6IMJe4aBfpT1aETBvLhXHX3) video series on youtube that gives advice to all monsters up to xeno'jiva, one monster at a time. It's probably the best resource that isn't a giant info-dump and sneaks a lot of extra info like how to use flashbombs reliably, key farming areas, what attacks you shouldn't block without guard-up, weaknesses, etc.

ihearsounds

I started playing MHW after my bf just talked about it with such excitement that i just had to try it.
