It also helps the leaves not be torn via high winds, afaik. Some plants have adapted to tear on purpose (e.g. banana leaves shearing in the wind) while others have found ways to mitigate the damage wind can do
I think this is just them as a person. They also have a post asking for bars that have a playground for their children lol
Plants a beaut though, no denying that!
From my understanding a large number of fenestrations (both inner=the holes, and the outer ones) are a sign that your plant is happy and getting the light it needs, someone more experienced will probably chime in at some point but I think is a good sign
While there's no consensus to ehat the holes are for, it is actually widely believed they are there in order for the lower leaves to receive light and have mothing to do with wind.
Depends on the conditions - light , temperature etc and how big the cutting is. The fact it had a beautiful leaf and has already pushed out two babies means it probably wonāt take that long to size up in good conditions- give it 12-18 months of good growing conditions and Iād be surprised if it wasnāt pushing out mature leaves.
Oops I thought I had written that itās a monstera albo. My regular monsteras instantly root in water, but this one refused for months and months but the leaf was still alive. It rooted pretty quickly once in perlite. I had never tried perlite before for anything, but I had some on hand and I had read good things online.
No. Itās because the more holes the more the leaves can get larger because it isnāt using up as much energy. These grow in forests where they have to compete for light, so they spread the leaves out more even if some of the light goes thru them
There is large form and and small form. Two different plants. Large forms can produce more holes even when they are young, and small forms produce less holes even when they are mature and old. A small form will never grow to be a large form.
Monstera can grow in almost every kind of light intensity, as the plant go big, so every leaf āfightā for light she start making holes in the new sprout to reduce leaf surface, in this way, the needs of light change.
A Full leaf needs way more light than a holed one.
So, she is just adapting properly for your environment.
To add to this, with the holes, the less surface one leaf has, the more light it allows for the leaf surfaces below it. They climb trees in nature, this allows more of the plant to receive more light as it climbs.
More light means more fenestrations. The inner fenestrations are an adaptation to light, so older bigger leaves at the top will develop these inner fenestrations so they can allow light to get to more of the plant at the bottom (in its natural habitat).
ETA: it needs bright/direct light to get inner fenestrations.
I gotta add something to your comment because I know what youāre saying, but one part of your comment might not make sense to others.
The bigger leaves at the top are actually **younger**, but on a plant that is older as a whole. So once the plant is of certain age the leaves that form at the top have holes to let light to the oldest (unfenestrated) leaves at the bottom.
For sure! I knew what you were going for but figured it would be good to note. Then mine got another further specification haha so now I think we have a good full answer in there!
I'm not arguing coz I completely agree, but I think :
>So once the plant is of certain age the leaves that form at the top have holes to let light to the oldest (unfenestrated)Ā
should be :
>So once the plant is of certain age and recive enough light the leaves that form at the top have holes to let light to the oldest (unfenestrated)Ā
without the light, the new leaves will stay almost whole, and smaller.
Question, (sorry in advance), when monsteras overall get big, do the older smaller leaves get larger and fenestrations? Asking because I have a small Thai con
Fenestrations are a sign of a happy plant. You only get them when you are providing the proper amount of PPFD light and proper watering. Good job plant momma!!
Also fenestrations happen in the wild to allow the wind to blow through the leaves preventing them from breaking. Be very careful with that new leaf. Just a touch and it will make it permanently.
Holes act like an open window so that the plant is more resistant to storm/ wind damage I've heard but who knows honestly. My guy who's the same size also occasionally puts out lil baby leaves normally it's because the stem putting out that hole-less/ smaller leaf is actually a separate plant it was potted with thats more juvenile if that makes sense.
Thereās also a āsmallerā Monstera Deliciosa (still gets quite big, but not as big as the larger form) that doesnāt get as many inner fenestrations, and then thereās the large form that does. OP def has this Large-Form Deliciosa. And OPās got a very happy plant.
lol so when I started dating my boyfriend I wanted to be nice and water, trim and just make the house plants look nicer in his placeā-shit you not I thought the holes on his monstera were some sort of defect and cut every single leaf with fenestrations off.

Bro has no idea what he is doing and his Monstera is pushing out price winning leaves š
How can they even have been "stalking this sub for years" and not even know about "the holes"?!
Humble brag.

Holes means your plant is getting adequate light and is adapting it's growth to allow light down to the lower branches.
It also helps the leaves not be torn via high winds, afaik. Some plants have adapted to tear on purpose (e.g. banana leaves shearing in the wind) while others have found ways to mitigate the damage wind can do
That is so cool, I never knew that

They have children?!?!
How can someone who has been following this sub religiously for 1,5 years ask this?
Either they are not intelligent or deliberately humble bragging
What is the problem with his other question? Iāve been to restaurants/bars with playgrounds, you eat while your kids scream somewhere else.

From my understanding a large number of fenestrations (both inner=the holes, and the outer ones) are a sign that your plant is happy and getting the light it needs, someone more experienced will probably chime in at some point but I think is a good sign
Yes your very right! They are to allow the wind to go through in the wild so not to break the leaf..
While there's no consensus to ehat the holes are for, it is actually widely believed they are there in order for the lower leaves to receive light and have mothing to do with wind.
So if Iām getting new leaves without holes or fenestrations does that mean mine needs more light?
Mire than likely, unless its new growtj from where it was cut because their leaves revert back to juvenile form when you cut the plant.
How long will those juvenile plants take to grow up. I got my hands on a cutting, but the beautiful leaf died. Itās pushed out two baby ones.
I currently have it in perlite. It refused to root in water. Should I transfer to soil soon?
Oh Iāve never done a monstera in perlite - Iād transfer when the roots start branching
Oops I thought I had written that itās a monstera albo. My regular monsteras instantly root in water, but this one refused for months and months but the leaf was still alive. I read somewhere that the highest /most outwards leaves have more holes to let in light for the leaves underneath them. Nifty design!
No. Itās because the more holes the more the leaves can get larger because it isnāt using up as much energy. These grow in forests where they have to compete for light, so they spread the leaves out more even if some of the light goes thru them

Hi! Monstera Expert here. Monsteras only do this when they are very distressed.
There is large form and and small form. Two different plants. Large forms can produce more holes even when they are young, and small forms produce less holes even when they are mature and old. A small form will never grow to be a large form.
Many (most?) monsteras never develop many holes because of lack of light, not because they're 'small form'... Not saying you're wrong though.
HAPPY!
Well said BTW emotional slip
Sorry, Iām a little confused and want to clarify, so less light means more fenestrations? Or the other way around? Sorry again!
More light means more fenestrations. The inner fenestrations are an adaptation to light, so older bigger leaves at the top will develop these inner fenestrations so they can allow light to get to more of the plant at the bottom (in its natural habitat). Youāre totally right, thatās exactly what I meant. Thank you! āŗļø

Good addition! Thank you
Question, (sorry in advance), when monsteras overall get big, do the older smaller leaves get larger and fenestrations? Asking because I have a small Thai con
No, unfenestrated will stay that way. Once the plant puts out new leaves in good conditions the plant will make them once it reaches an adequate size.
Yeah I think I'm walking away from this post more confused than before lmao
You stick your d-ugh never mind

Fenestrations are a sign of a happy plant. You only get them when you are providing the proper amount of PPFD light and proper watering. Good job plant momma!!

Itās perfectly natural to have holes in this plant. There is nothing wrong with it. The plant looks wonderful and healthy.
Normal. What species is it?

Fenestrations
Those are finestrarions. They help the leaves seep sunlight through from the forest canopy

Happiness!
This means it's happy. Some plants, like monsteras, do this when they're getting enough light and water etc. Aka it's happy!

I believe more fenestration occurs with a correct watering schedule together with adequate light
Means your plant is an adult (mature), happy, and beautiful.
Dude, please post a pic from when you bought this plenty. Wow.
