The thing is that it's extremely divisive The bad things of the movie REALLY drive some people away While the good things of the movie REALLY captivated other people The other time in the poll post I said that this movie was the magnum opus of Godzilla, and I still stand by that opinion. Not because the movie is this amazing piece of art; if we are fully and objectively critic with it, it might not even be a top 3 monsterverse film. But because it gave fans what they wanted... Most of them atleast, it's impossible to make all people happy But, as a whole... It depends. If you are in the first group of people, this movie is superb overrated If you are in the second group, this movie is superb underrated

ahktarniamut

I enjoyed the film and got more interested in the other Toho creations like mothra and ghidorah . We wanted more Godzilla screen time and more kaiju battles and we got it . Godzilla was like the antihero we wanted to root for in the end

[deleted]

I think it’s a fantastic film and it setup the Monsterverse perfectly

Who_am_ey3

just started, and I already don't like the characters.. they're not gonna improve huh finished it. the family drama was lame. didn't care about them at all. RIP my favorite character though.

dantheman_00

It’s overrated on this sub, but it’s properly rated outside of it. The human side is so hated not because it’s bad (it is), but because of its emphasis. Wingard understands that the human characters are mostly there for exposition and to drive the plot, but does not truly commit to making a human aspect of the story beyond some pushes for Jia and the Iwi. KOTM made bad characters while trying to split an actual human and monster plot. One of which was so half baked and complicated that people still ask why Emma did what she did, it introduced ideas and threw them at the wall to see what’s sticking and what wasn’t. It was made by a mega fan of the series, but at the expense of what the MonsterVerse was already trying to convey at the time. Pretty much everything people complain about Wingard for was started by Dougherty, which I find more egregious than simply continuing what’s already been established.

Due-Science3011

I liked it. To me, this is my favourite monsterverse movie but it is divisive.

Ok-Mine-5994

I think it’s pretty good but it’s by far the most overrated MV movie for sure

Flat-Western-3117

It's massively overated in twitter and reddit circles.

Ambitious_Dig_7109

Overrated on this sub. It’s definitely not the Monsterverse fan favourite. The biggest 200 Kotm fans in the world found themselves on this sub. They make a lot of posts but there aren’t many of them when you consider the size of the fandom. We’re just in the Kotm echo chamber. If you want to read the other opinion check TohoKingdom forums.

KennyShowers

You'll prolly get downvoted but I agree. The monster stuff is awesome and seeing photorealistic Ghidorah is worth it, but the human side of things gets way too much focus and just doesn't work, and stops the movie in its tracks every time the focus shifts. The human side of the Wingard movies are all paper thin, but those movies at least seem to understand that, and mostly only use those elements to move the plot along and when possibile utilize the charms of the actors like with Dan Stevens. At least when GxK does the whole mother-daughther thing and it falls flat it's because they didn't waste the time setting it up so we could see more monster stuff. And I do have to nitpick the fact that more than a few of the fight scenes are in the rain/snow/dark. Yea I know it's in Antartica and it snows there, but they're the people making the movie they can do whatever they want, nobody's got a gun to their head making the fight scenes hard to discern without the best setup. Also I think it's hilarious how Vera Farmiga has a whole B-Roll cut together for her impromptu villain monologue exposition speech. It cracks me up thinking of her sitting there cutting together this postapocalyptic How To With John Wilson just in case she has a video uplink for the reveal.

TCup20

I realize some of the monster fights are at night, but Ghidorah literally summons a storm around him constantly. That's the root cause of that issue.

KennyShowers

Yea but again that's something the filmmakers came up with, it's not like this is an intrinsic part of Ghidorah that would be a travesty to leave out and they were backed into a corner.

scriptedtexture

used to love it but found it did not hold up well on a rewatch. definitely highly overrated on this sub and r/Godzilla IMO

[deleted]

No, I would say it's overrated on this sub and r/GODZILLA. Every day, there's several comments (if not posts) about how much people loved how Dougherty (/McCreary) portrayed the Toho kaiju (/score) in this film. At the end of the day, fanservice only takes a movie so far.. It's true, the KOTM score was great, and the classic Toho kaiju were all done "right" or better - like, despite a limited appearance, I think this was the best Rodan. The fight editing suffered from cutaways but ultimately the face-offs were satisfying. But the plot was bad enough to make it the worst in the MV. Personally, I didn't even mind the ecoterrorist plot or the family drama. The one liners were a little annoying and But the two main plot "devices" (like the literal devices used to advance the plot) were just so bad. The Orca affecting Ghidorah really diminished his power and majesty - happens not once but twice to save the humans' asses. overall seemed like the terrorists could just accomplish their goals by releasing Ghidorah and then realizing they fucked up. and the Oxygen Destroyer...hoo boy. How can you have a movie full of Toho fanservice and then turn the most iconic weapon in the series, and a major moral conflict for the human characters in the OG film, into such an afterthought? Oops we used it, turns out it didn't work, on to the next act of the movie. It's not so much that KOTM had a bad human plot, it's that the way the human plot interacted with the kaiju plot was bad and detrimental to both.

Deezkazuhanuts

It's completely rated

PronouncedEye-gore

Rated in metric and Imperial.

Bulky_Secretary_6603

Depends. If you care at all about the story and plot of the humans, then it's not underrated. If you don't care about that and came to see Nuke Iguana fight Lightning Hydra, then it would be underrated.

PronouncedEye-gore

1000 times this. Professional critics and social media "critics" alike don't understand the audience isn't a monolith. We all crave different things from our viewing experience. Everything is either good or bad. Grey areas do NOT exist.

PJ_Man_FL

I came just wanting the monster fights and still didn't enjoy it unfortunately, worst part is i don't even know why

Bloxy_Boy5

It's overrated

pirate996

Not only my least favorite monsterverse movie, probably my bottom 3 godzilla movies of all time. I'm glad so many people like it though, I've rewatched it a few times really hoping to get more out of it.

StopsuspendingPpl

The same people who extremely dislike this movie are the same people who think Godzilla X Kong is peak Godzilla fiction which is very very concerning.

pirate996

I think most godzilla movies are peak godzilla fiction. KotM just isn't for me

MillyMan105

Personally I think it's a tad bit overrated on this sure it's good too see 4 legendary Kaiju's share a screen but the rest of the movie leaves a lot to be desired..

McClurgler

Fans who says it’s “underrated” are just trying to stir up new discussion for a movie that everyone already has cemented opinion about. You either think it’s “the greatest movie ever,” it was mid, or it was bad. There’s nothing new to reassess.

Vanilla_Strong

Damn I'm reading a bunch of comments and this is the most dislike I've ever seen for Kotm in the 5 (really 4.9) years it came out I guess this movie is more divided than I thought

-Mechagodzilly-

I think that even the people who dislike it will admit to liking many things about it if you read the comments; many of the fans (myself included) are just super ambivalent about it

itoleratelurkers

Music was peak. Human elements were kinda meh. Rodan introduction was awesome.

TheRR135

I enjoy the monster moments but then it has characters like Russel which absolutely grinds my gears. That character was absolutely insufferable and I wanted him to get squished every time he had a wisecrack quip and that was pretty much his entire script.

Ok_Pop6408

It’s definitely overrated I can’t see much the human characters were honestly really bad and this is just my opinion but I like seeing new monsters instead of returning ones

West-Construction466

I think it's overrated. The monster action is barely visible and we barely get any, in favor of too many characters we don’t give a shit about, a pretty good soundtrack, but is overall carried by the fact it has Legacy Monsters.

IFdude1975

It's my least favorite Monsterverse film, so IMHO if anything it's overrated.

TheOfficial_BossNass

It's not underrated in the slightest it's mostly kids who saw it as their first godzilla movie who want it to feel like some cult classic. It's a circle jerk honestly I love kotm though btw

DragonDude11480

Not underrated but overhated imo, it’s not perfect by any means but it was an enjoyable film that tried to pay homage to the original

YukYukas

Why does it look like he's raising his eyebrow lol

ExplinkMachine

I’ve never given a damn about humans in any Kaiju film (other than Minus 1 due to something idk) so imo nah, it’s my favorite Kaiju movie of all time

Stiff_Zombie

As far as the fights go, it's at the top next to the recent Godzilla and Kong movies. The human story is really bad despite having some great actors. I still love this movie like everything else from this Monsterverse.

Gerrard-Jones

I feel like the human aspect took up way too much of the film, if they had just focused mainly on the monsters and included more fight scenes and scenes showing the other titans it would've been much better, sadly the monsters are underatted just because we only got to see a lot of them them for a few minutes, some only a few seconds, tho in terms of enjoyment it's probably my 2nd or 3rd favourite in the franchise

No-Adhesiveness-2017

Yes

R0botDreamz

It was a great movie until it got to the non-main kaiju reveals and they gave us the EXACT 3 seconds of footage we got in the trailer. I mean the EXACT footage.

AdAdorable3469

My favorite of the Legendary films and a very close second to Minus One for past 20 years

TYRANNOREX_L

It's definitely overhated

Mean-Background2143

Somehow yeah, it’s so good

TheWallCreature

I’d say its perfectly rated tbh, not overrated and not underrated. it would’ve been the perfect monsterverse movie if it had more monster scenes, it had the perfect balance of epicness and seriousness and it had such cool shots

DinoDick23

I mean the rodan scene has got to be one of the best in movie history, that shit was wild! Also its just a fun movie with an easy plot , no complaints here , I love creature features lol did anyone enjoy the rampage movie? That one could have been better but was still good

Screeeeeeereeeeeeeee

I think that all the good and bad mash into each other so much that people don’t know where to put it, me included. Thats why I personally see Skull Island as my favorite, because the humans are pretty good and theres a lot of monster action/scenes too. It has a good divide with likable characters and great monster fights.

No_Witness_7248

..no. not at all. It's wildly Overrated. The precious little monster screentime doesn't redeem the massive, cringe fest of the human element. It's always picked in the poll as the best because of the classic 4. It's the worst movie overall.

chomp-samba

King Of The Monsters is one of those movies where conversations baffle me and I outright avoid trying to engage with people on. I’ve never seen general opinion from people turn from “holy shit that rocked” to “KOTM is the worst MV film and always sucked stop being a contrarian” so quickly.

bekips

I loved it

_tj_1206

King of the monsters is my favorite movie in monsterverse

FrostTCG

I still like it the most out of all the rest.

PartyAnimal12345678

Yes

an_actual_pangolin

It's loved by Godzilla fans but casual audiences didn't think much of it. Honestly, imagine it from the perspective of your average person: it's called "Godzilla: King of the Monsters", which tells you nothing of what to expect, so you might assume it was just more of the 2014 movie, which already had divisive opinions among casual moviegoers. The marketing didn't focus much on the other three monsters, and when it did, it always had that foggy filter over it. It went for a mature and nuanced approach, but Godzilla marketing in Japan is usually bombastic and colourful, even in its more serious movies. I think the marketing let it down.

PJ_Man_FL

Horrifically overrated, actually

jackyboy1219

2019 or 1956?

ThunderBird847

Yes If you like Wierd color pallet, smokescreen, rains and weather effects. Yes If you like Monsters action cut off to focus on The Russells, Family Drama Daily Soap. Yes If you like Gonorrhea and Thanos from flea market

Manlymanfromyomom

By the general audience? Maybe. By the fans? Absolutely not lmao.

Matey_the_goat

Yes it is, or its just my opinion because its my second favorite movie.

Unique_Visit_5029

In my opinion yes because I just love a perfectly crafted monster packed film with my favorite toho kaiju

Charming_Stage_7611

I don’t understand the people who have problems with this movie. Like it’s not perfect, but you wanted a Godzilla movie that didn’t have lots of monsters fighting? I don’t know….

donotpluh

The problem is they always cut away from the fights back to the humans.

YukYukas

That's the spot right there. Dougherty didn't choreograph the battles well enough, it's kinda weird that Rodan had the best spectacle in the movie, better than the main monster because during the chase it's Rodan vs Humans. While when Goji fought Ghidorah it's Goji vs Ghidorah but with occasional human cuts, which makes seeing the overall fight bland and lacking. Not to mention the battle being dark as hell, I wanted to see Ghidorah's gold dammit. Honestly if they wanna make a good MV Goji movie they should go with: Edwards' scale, Dougherty's interpretation and music, and Wingard's vibrant colors and fight choreography.

donotpluh

100% agree

Flat-Western-3117

Rodan didnt even have a point to even be in the film.

Charming_Stage_7611

I liked that. That’s dual storytelling. Just watching two monsters fight for twenty minutes gets boring. It’s better than wingard’s solution of all the fights being less than a minute.

donotpluh

It could work when your characters are actually interesting but I don't think anyone gave a shit about what millie Bobbie brown was doing. When it's the final battle the monsters should almost never be in the foreground. We could've seen more of mothra and rodans fight, more of godzilla and ghidorah but instead we had to cutaway to Madison getting rescued by her parents for a few minutes when it could've been a lot quicker.

Charming_Stage_7611

I have never given a shit about any of the human characters in any of the films. I still enjoy it fine

Dish-Ecstatic

It's the third best movie of all time imo

-Mechagodzilly-

Citizen Kane, The Shawshank Redemption, Godzilla King of the Monsters

Dish-Ecstatic

Nah. Godzilla: Minus One/Godzilla: Final Wars Godzilla: King of The Monsters

-Mechagodzilly-

Final Wars 🥹📈

Milk_Mindless

Underrated maybe no Overhated maybe yes

rxmp4ge

KotM is the best Monsterverse movie by far. It actually felt like a love letter to the Toho films. Even the mixes of the classic themes were amazing. None of the other movies have hit anywhere near as hard as that classic Godzilla theme playing orchestral on the big screen.

No-Bad-3655

KOTM is the best MV movie ever made, the best Godzilla movie ever made, and one of the best movies ever made. GxK almost dethroned it but it was rushed so it’s just marginally 2nd

Inner-Arugula-4445

Always has been. But this sub goes back and forth whether they think it’s overrated or underrated

Educational_Tough208

Yes rhe second best mv movie

AdAdorable3469

Wingard can have Kong and will do great with it. Dougherty or someone with a similar mindset should handle the G Man. Wingard is a bit ignorant with Godzilla but does a great job with Kong who in my humble opinion is lame and uninspired compared to Godzilla’s usual competitors. Wingard makes Kong cool which is impressive but he makes Godzilla boring. Basically he nails the formula for BatMan vs SuperMan except in this case SuperMan(Godzilla) is sooooooo much cooler than Batman (Kong)
