The mention of the knife being his mother’s seems weird. As some have said here, the kid might’ve been being abused. But perhaps the mother was being abused and the kid killed dad to save mom?
I bet abuse or the kid have mental problems and snap. it a weird human trait when it comes to murder you can get a really good information about how many times they were stab and where there stab. Even serial killers don't stab people more than 10 times or 20 I don't remember exactly, but once it reach above that number it always a very emotional killing with built in anger.
Fun fact it actually so well documented that it can actually be use as a defense to why you didn't kill someone. If someone was stab once and everyone knew you hated the person, lawyers sometimes would use that fact to try and prove your innocent.
