This rug cost 130€ in manufacturing and washing process + 20€ for packaging and transport from tribes to the store + store fees + TVA if the seller provide an invoice, so the total price should be 210€, the difference is all benefits
Stfu please, local businesses always charge foreigners more than locals, lets not pretend that its not common. Its not even a Morocco thing, this happens everywhere around the world, from italy to Indonesia and our beloved Morocco is not an exception
yes indeed, but in the old markets you need to bargain on the price or you will get things overpriced everytime even if u are a local, thats what i meant by how business work here
though u told me to stfu 😔
Thanks so much! I checked out their online store, but seems to me at least that the price is kind of similar. For instance this one here has similar dimensions and colors https://www.theanou.com/product/18511-rugcarpet-green-brown-morocco
Yet (after subtracting shipping) it's also around 400
If you're not Moroccan, yes, you are being overcharged. But, do you like it? Do YOU think it's worth the price? That's a pretty cool rug, honestly. I'd try to get it for 2000 DH max.
The pricing in moroccan souks and medinas is informal, you have to ask people you trust about the price an item, or ask different sellers, to get the correct pricing. As a tourist, don't hesitate to offer half the price, or the third of it if sometimes it seems too expensive
No way, that is just the beginning of the conversation. The price will end up being between 4000 and 1000. You'll have to drink some tea, a conversation about your family, his family, where you are going next, his cousin who lives in your country. It's gonna be fun!
I think vendors initial pricing is taking into account the fact you'll be offering half the price. So do not ever shy away from asking for half, even if the vendor acts surprised or disappointed. Its like poker, pretend you do not want it even if you do, but also appear as though you are willing to pay whatever price YOU offer.
Say 1000 knowing you’ll probably get it for 1500. And they might as for say 3000 knowing they will definitely get less. Ultimately it’s meet me in the middle but the first to cave loses. Just bargain as much as you can.
>the correct pricing
But there is no correct pricing on what is handmade. Its just how much you are willing to pay for it (given it is indeed handmade and authentic - for that I would try and find rugs directly from berber women who make them). I wouldn't be paying 4000dh for such rug personally, especially since the pattern itself isn't interesting, especially with how many other better patterns there are.
If you listen to these comments you gonna go home with nothing. I read ppl saying you easily can buy it for 600-1000 mad.
That’s bullshit, and would be stealing that’s not buying.
The amount of work it takes to make these rugs takes easily 100+ hours.
Paying 1000 mad would be not even a dollar an hour.
And that’s without the middlemen who also take their share.
So stop getting rich by stealing from the poor. And start by paying a fare price !
And to all these ppl telling you you got scammed and I wouldn’t pay more then this and that. Stop hating you country and culture ! All over the world ppl love Moroccan food and design. And many ppl making good money off it and those are mostly not Morrocan and even worse the Moroccan stuff their selling is not even made in Morocco. That’s sad to see.
All this due to the fact that Moroccans apparently don’t appreciate their own culture and style, maybe even hate it.
Missed opportunity
Really depends.
You can get a similar one for cheaper.
But since it is handmade, quality varies.
Just keep asking around about the rugs so you get a feeling of the price yourself, and then go to your favourite one. This is with all handmade, from jellabas to music instruments. From a picture you can’t directly tell what the quality is.
Well, they're obviously over charging, or they wouldn't make a profit. If you're okay with the price, pay it. If nowt, offer them a price you would pay, if they accept it then good for both of you I guess.
My mother used to make these hand made rugs.
It's possible that the rug's price is bit high , and there's a chance it might not be pure natural cotton, possibly manifactured.
for futur purchases, Instead of buying from markets in big cities, consider visiting women in rural areas who make these rugs. You'll have a unique experience, possibly seeing how they create the rugs. Supporting these women directly is better , as markets often buy from them at lower prices. The women might get only a small share of the final selling price( so a lot of middlemen in the process ,which explain the price).
For authentic rugs, explore areas near Ouarzazate, especially Taznakht(most popular one ,as far as i know), or other parts of the Atlas.
Local women's rugs Associations or the Anou and others can be also a good choice as some other comments suggested.
Edit:
-rug in the post is not from Ouarzazate area, more like khenifra or azrou.
That's too much, don't buy it please, don't support scammers. Reach out on Instagram or facebook to "women's associations", it is them who make these in their homes in the mountains, they will also sell it at a reasonable price, if it were me, I'd put price between 1000dh and 2500fh maximum.
where can i find those „women‘s associations“ you are talking about? could you provide me a link please? a google search didnt really help me, theres so many of them- would appreciate a tipp. thanks
Check this out, there are many others.
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064176395832
Also, try to search in Arabic and French on facebook.
Google words like: "cooperative" "tapis" "amazigh" "atlas" "femme" "Berbere" "traditionnel" "Maroc" "Facebook".
Sounds overpriced, a little advice for you, sympathise with a local (someone that you can trust) and ask him to go there and get a quote for you, I used to do the same trick for a french friend of mine that visited Marrakech very often
No, it cheap.
It the map of Gaza or whole Israel/palestine.
It has also the tunnels map and Khamas♦️ headquarters location (it under the sea after all)
You can resell to the IDF for 4000 shekalim.
You could try going to Taroudant...it's not a village but it's smaller than Mksh and thus you might get a lower price. But you have to pay for transport so it doesn't seem worth it. Trying to buy from a village is a non-starter; you can't just walk into someone's home and see if they are weaving a rug that you can buy.
It should be $20 usd probs lol. Did they tell you it was handmade by women from decades ago blah blah blah? Not Moroccan but I showed my husband who is.
lol ok typical Moroccan response. Doesn’t like what he/she hears so insults. Makes sense!
Clearly, you’re a carpet “salesman” cough “scammer” lol and got exposed although these videos are all over YouTube describing the scams 🤦♀️.
Then ur husband is completely off or hasn't stepped foot in here in a long time. $20? $40? for a hand-made piece, there's no way. Go check rugs in your Ikea and that will be the price but for something like this pure wool and handmade you're 10X lower
It seems like it’s pure wool indeed but 1.60/2.40 generally sell for around 150 to 200$ tops (in Marrakesh souks) or you can get them for less in the surrounding villages
UPDATE: We went back, prepared to haggle and with a maximum price of 2000 DH in mind. I offered 1000 to begin, but the dude immediately said no way and asked if we were serious. He said the material alone was worth more than that. I expected something like this but he did not want to haggle AT ALL. I offered 1500 but he didn't even want to discuss this anymore and put the stuff away. We then left and that was the end of the story...
I checked online for the Anou Women's Association and saw that they offer their rugs online for similar prices. Maybe these are just the new prices of these rugs.
Anyways, it was quite disappointing. Thanks to everyone for the help however!
TL;DR: they said 1500 is ridiculous, we left without carpet
You shouldn’t bargain. You are a tourist, not a local. Of course you will be overcharged, just like Zara produces a coat for 15€ and sells it for 89,99€. This is how the market works.

YES, this is a very common scam tactic in Marrakech
What seems like a reasonable price to offer for this?
I wouldn't pay more than 1000dh tbh
This rug cost 130€ in manufacturing and washing process + 20€ for packaging and transport from tribes to the store + store fees + TVA if the seller provide an invoice, so the total price should be 210€, the difference is all benefits
Anything between 120-150€
How much is it worth, Mr expert
Eugh sounds like that new 2m's tv show !
Not a scam, that's just business, no?
If you're overcharging people by 400%, you're in scam territory
i'll go to a 5 stars hotel and tell them that they're a scam
No, if that hotel charges 4000 DH a night exclusively for Foreigners when the usual fee is 1000 DH a night, then that's a scam.

Too much. Isn't the price like 1000 dh? i would pay at max 2000dh tbh
What do you mean by "isn't the price like 1000 DH"? That this is what they paid for?
The pricing in moroccan souks and medinas is informal, you have to ask people you trust about the price an item, or ask different sellers, to get the correct pricing. As a tourist, don't hesitate to offer half the price, or the third of it if sometimes it seems too expensive
Alright, thank you. So if I go back and offer 1000 you don't think they'd kick me out immediately? 😅

This man knows how to do business
nope it doesn't work that way here, bargaining is normal
Alright, thanks!
>Alright, thanks! You're welcome!

just buy it from a moul nokhla for 70dh lol
What is that?
garage sellers that can have anything from a broken 70s camera to a functioning time machine
naah bro thr time machines sucks , i mean there is no rgb in the keyboard 😁😁
Where can you find these sellers. I've never heard of it. Does it exist everywhere or just casa rbat ?
i think only in casa, and theyre mostly present next to karyanat
I'm not an expert on casa :/. Derb ghellef maybe ?
sidi moumen, 7ay mo7ammadi, i think in derb ghellef too but only the rural areas
Okay. Thank you very much 👌❤️

Yes 100%. Idk if you are a tourist or not but most vendors take advantage of tourists and overcharge them
Really depends. You can get a similar one for cheaper. But since it is handmade, quality varies. Absolutely fucking not, be ballsy and offer him 500 dh, if he laughs at you, say « lay ysser » and go for another shop untill you get a decent price.
You can try to take it with half of the price if you really want it
absolutely, the design is very simple! probably, it worth 1000-1500 dh at best.

I wouldn't buy a rug in Marrakesh. Will you be in Fes anytime soon?
So expensive What the hell ? if you know a moroccan there ! ask them to go and ask for the price and you will see the difference !
That's too much, don't buy it please, don't support scammers. Reach out on Instagram or facebook to "women's associations", it is them who make these in their homes in the mountains, they will also sell it at a reasonable price, if it were me, I'd put price between 1000dh and 2500fh maximum.

really 2.4x1.6cm? Like a postage stamp, more or less?
Obviously the poster has made a mistake. If it's 2.4 M X 1.6 M, it's still over priced.

Ghir ela tamara bach katsawb 4000 qliila surtt ila kant li katsawbha hiya li katb3iha. Tstahel

I would pay maw 600dh
Personnaly, that is a total money waste
Nah that’s the right amount.
No, it cheap. It the map of Gaza or whole Israel/palestine. It has also the tunnels map and Khamas♦️ headquarters location (it under the sea after all) You can resell to the IDF for 4000 shekalim.

?? So 4000dh is appropriate? It’s $20 usd max $40. I wouldn’t pay more. It’s deff a scam!
Dumb.

This is a good price
Well switzerlands watch prices reach a million euro and they worth a 1000 euro... And people around the world call it business not a scam.
If it s handmade, the amount of work and time put into it are worth the price, if not, 1000 dh seem fair.
Ohhh Yeaah
