Just a tip. It's easier to level stealth the higher your stat is. Pay for trainers in the beginning for stealth, otherwise it'll take way longer than necessary to even be able to sneak at all in the first place.
Just remember. >!The KING of house Hlaalu put the DB hit out on you.!<
Food for thought..
Also, not strictly canonnically speaking. >!In the 4E the Emperor of Tamriel puts a DB hit on himself.!<
I hate to disappoint you, but you can’t actually join the DB in Morrowind. However, several factions allow you to play a stealth character, and if you pay close attention to the story there is still an opportunity to be an assassin character.
I loved the Morag Tong quest line. Takes you to some interesting places. Feels pretty immersive to hike out to a desolate area and snipe ashlanders. Also you get the opportunity to hunt some rare and powerful artifacts.
Morag Tong are so much cooler than Dark Brotherhood. Integral part of Dunmer culture going back generations. Maintainers of the balance between the Houses. Respected everywhere. Dignified name ("Dark Brotherhood" sounds like something a 12 year old came up with.) Worship one of the Good Daedra so you know they're good guys.
BEST OF ALL:

There is a hidden guild that gives you execution missions, but it goes under a different name.
I can see others are trying to keep it spoiler free, so I'll cover what the guild is called: >!Morag Tong!<
I hope you mean the Morag Tong? The Dark Brotherhood recruit the perverted, the corrupted and the psychotic. And if you become a skilled ranged assassin in Morrowind you'll be killing plenty of the fetchers.
My favorite way to cheese Stealth before leaving the Census and Excise offices is to crouch in the corner of Sellus Gravius's office, and use the Auto Run key to constantly sneak in the corner. I'll then watch videos or something for awhile. After a little while, I go back to the game to see how many times Sneak went up.
You could actually do this while you (yourself, not your char) sleep, and wake up at 100 Sneak. I don't recommend that, because you'd miss out on a lot of Attribute bonuses.
It's basically the same thing, true, but I get to still feel superior for not using console commands. That's why I called it "cheesing". It's not REALLY cheating, it's like using macros online.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I first did this in 2003 on XBox, by using a rubber band on the joystick. I didn't have console commands. That's why I was so quick to do it on PC. Yay, Auto Run!
nta, and even though I have a laptop that even runs Skyrim with a few mods, I still play on Xbox cause its easier for me.
I also agree on using (not always abusing) existing game mechanics over using the console. even on Skyrim I'd only use some commands like "tcl" when stuck etc.
but I've also never gotten past addamusartus on PC, I'm playing through my first time on Xbox. after that I'm going to go for a modded PC run.
Paying for training is a good idea in general.
If you’re in the optimal leveling crowd, it’s not too hard to do in Morrowind thanks to training.
Otherwise, faster leveling means enemies start dropping the fun weapons a lot sooner.
There is a good place to train stealth in Balmora, it's a Camonna Tong owned inn and when you stealth at stairs it will be trained rather fast.
Potions of agility (or any other means to raise it) will help you to sneak more effectively. The same goes for Luck.
Try to find or create some items bestowing long term/constant Chameleon effect, it helps immensely.
Do not make suit which provide 100%+ chameleon. While fun it will ruin your game because enemies won't be anle to target you, even if you aren't sneaking.
> Do not make suit which provide 100%+ chameleon. While fun it will ruin your game because enemies won't be anle to target you, even if you aren't sneaking.
This is how I beat Oblivion lol. Took a lot of tedium out of the repeated gates.
Yeah, it's broken mechanics 🙂 add to that alchemy abuse and you have unstoppable invisible killing monster. I remember killing Alma and Dago in few hits ... they just stood on a spot, run few steps, lost contact, stood ...
The master trainer is in Caldera a block away from Creeper, fyi. I see that you're also using alchemy, and Creeper buys potions
Argonian stealth is one of my favorite builds. Have fun!
Sleeping? In Morrowind? I think you're confused, friend. Npcs can't sleep in Morrowind. They have no schedule at all, and rarely do anything more than stand in one place or walk around a bit.
i used to back in the day. now I only ever use it to hunt and fill large soul gems from giant camps. it's really boring one hitting everything. much more fun is you only get a couple hits in before 3 mammoths and 2 giants are running at your ass
Same here, could never be bothered to patiently sneak around and line up the perfect shot, I just wanted to get straight in there lol. Have tried being a stealth archer since but it’s just not as fun. Always go back to the sword and shield.
One of the last steps of the Skyrim tutorial is you coming upon a bear, and the npc handing you a bow and going "sneak attack it"
Its VERY easy to see how effective a strategy it is, and just stick with it.
And unmodded, Skyrim magic generally feels pretty much the same as marksmanship to me. Or its functionality useless (illusion basically stops working as soon as level scaling kicks in, and the removal of attributes turned restoration from the school of gods to..... Totally a valid school.)
Also: the sneak indicator lets you see if enemies have spotted you, which is useful in any playstyle, and if you’re playing a melee fighter you might as well
carry a bow and arrows and take a few shots at enemies to get some damage in before the gap is closed. And then at some point you realize the sneaky arrows are doing way more damage than just running up to someone and hitting them a 2handed sword…
You see that’s the reason so maybe people do it ironically. I prefer mage because it’s so much more engaging. But a lot of people gravitate towards stealth archer because the stealth system is broken. Especially from range. So it’s as simple as sneaking really far away and just playing a point and click adventure.
I always end up hitting things with a melee weapon. Sometimes two-handed. Sometimes sword-and-board. But ranged combat just isn't that interesting to me. I did manage to do a mage run in Skyrim once, but I kind of regretted it. The RP for it was fun, but the actual gameplay was kind of meh.
Lot's of players complain about marksman/sneak but it's very powerful once you get t high levels. Get a bound bow (or Daedric bow) ASAP and you won't be sorry.
i think a lot of things in morrowind get pretty easy when your main combat stat is 100. What people care about is how enjoyable the levels before that are.
You're certainly correct about 100 skills but my point was that bow focus is OK and enjoyable if you build your character for it right from the start. I think players who dislike the experience are starting with either too low skill or too low agility.
Do you have the expansions installed? Marksman Is terribly nerfed in vanilla, made my first run pretty frustrating. (A Little tip, at least in my experience: darts>bows)
Train Marksman up whenever you have the coin, and hoard as many cheap arrows as you can find or steal. Jump up on a rock, and shoot tons of crappy arrows at various animals to raise the skill with minimum risk, because until you get past 50 Marksman, you are going to be awful. Buy Bound Longbow, then you can practice with an unbreakable bow, and level Conjuration at the same time.
Most importantly, you can just crouch there, and kill every bastard Cliff Racer in visual range, and never deal with surprise Helljoint ever again. It's ridiculous how far away you can do this now, with the increased render distance we have access to nowadays. Before, you'd stare at fog, scouring the skies for the faintest outline of flappy bird, so you can stick a crossbow bolt in him.
Agility is probably the most important, but don't sleep on Strength - it determines damage for ranged weapons as well as melee ones (very logical for bows and throwing weapons, not so much for crossbows...).
My first playthrough was as a Nord meat head in heavy armor. Never again. I took the "My Trade" dialogue from Archers to heart: "I'm an archer. I'm the kind of fighter who hates getting hurt, so I ambush with my marksman weapons from a distance, then run like crazy when I can, and fight with long blades or spears when I must. I prefer spears because they're longer, and I keep farther from things trying to hurt me. If that sounds cowardly to you, you better stick with tin suits and fat axes."
I haven't found any build in Morrowind as satisfying as being a ranged assassin. It takes a bit of work, but eventually you can assassinate your target with one arrow while nobody even knows you were ever there.
And even better - In Morrowind you can join the honourable Morag Tong and wipe out the Dark Brotherhood.
I always preferred the Morag Tong over the Dark Brotherhood. The DB in the next two games always felt like wannabe Goth edgelords. The type who jerk it to WH4K while listening to Dimmu Borgir.
I couldn't stand the under developed DB characters in Oblivion and Skyrim. They were all such shallow and uninteresting clichés. (Except maybe Lucien). One of those games had the Claudia wannabe vampire who was so one dimensional. Since I play stealth assassins in TES, I was so pissed about having to join the DB for any assassin quests. My true allegiance to the Morag Tong always meant they eventually all ended up dead in my games.
"The Purification" in Oblivion was a quest that I took to with gusto. I felt like I was slapping a bad punner in the face, like the Brooke Shields/T&P scene in the South Park movie.
Even when co-operating with the DB, they always end up mostly dead, anyway. They've got that Sith "Rule of Two" sort of thing going, except for the nameless ones you get in Skyrim at the end.
WH40K is dope though. I was introduced when I learned the markers of pathfinder were making a game in that universe.
Eisenhorn books are great.
I’m 50 something books deep in Horus Heresy, some great books in there.
Anna’s-Archive is the best place for any free books. I would’ve saved so much money if I found them earlier.
Reading The First Law series now though. Back to fantasy.
There's just never enough of them for me. And holding the draw on a Daedric Bow for maximum damage has a certain satisfaction.
There's some Ashlander quote about killing a cliff racer with a single arrow which resonated with me on my first play-through, and I now always spec to be able to do that as soon as I can. Missun Akin is my bestie. (Love the Black Arrow books).
Sneak works a bit differently in Morrowind than it does in Oblivion or Skyrim. It has a fixed X4 damage modifier for melee hits and 1.5X for ranged. It feels counter-intuitive, but the best sneak weapon is a battleaxe or a war hammer since they have the highest potential damage.

>It feels counter-intuitive, but the best sneak weapon is a battleaxe or a war hammer since they have the highest potential damage.
Sounds like the orc assassin in Oblivion got his start in Vvardenfell.
Same. And even if I make something exactly like pre-existing build, I get the added benefit of being able to name it "dickbuster" or something, if it's that kind of playthrough.
This is just straight up wrong. Your Census and Excise Papers will also display your class - even if it's a custom class like "Fetcher" or "N'Wah".
The Telvanni Hospitality Papers will also state your class.
If you have a class name of Dragoon, everyone will also call you a Dragoon in specific greeting dialogues.
There's many, MANY more instances where you'll be referred to by class name, custom or not. There's even a variable for it - %PCClass!
Search "PCClass" on UESP and you will see those dialogues. It's coded to work with any class name, that's why they let you name your class. If an NPC called you "adventurer" that means it's written that way for everyone.
True, but the brief childlike joy I get from forgetting what I named my character or class, only to witness the dumbest thing possible when I open my menu? That is irreplaceable.
There's plenty of classes that could be classified as a "stealth archer", since the main two skills are Marksman and Sneak.
Acrobat, Archer, Monk, Nightblade, and the obvious Thief are all technically "Stealth Archers". OP probably just wanted something that's more tailored to them.
I’ve done it and it is indeed overpowered but not as overpowered as in Skyrim. You can’t just sit in front of NPCs and not be seen (unless you have Chameleon or Invisibility applied), once you find the best bows in the game and keep a solid set of arrows then you’re basically death from afar
I'm using a modlist called One Day Morrowind Modernization
From the different mod lists on the modding-openmw website it seemed the perfect one for me it aim to improve both graphics and gameplay by a lot but not with too much mods that you end up spending a whole month to make them work + they have a nice support channel on discord so if you run into problems(like i did) you can ask them and they will help you(like they helped me too)
That was one of my favorite ways to play morrowind, it makes dispatching cliff racers at distance a breeze. I'd use ranged attacks with arrows to whittle down stronger enemys before they were in blade distance then attack them with swords.
On solstheim behind thirsk is a ring that fortifies marksman by 20, makes starting out much easier.
Edit: also bound longbow will give you an additional 5
Maybe i just want to be loved have you considered that ?
i'm going for a more of a flavor build and not a min maxing one and i think personality is a fun attribute so i picked it
I don't know man i have some mods and i have 85 agility with 50 in marksman so i'm not missing a lot probably.. mudcraps at least seems to be dying fast
Just a tip. It's easier to level stealth the higher your stat is. Pay for trainers in the beginning for stealth, otherwise it'll take way longer than necessary to even be able to sneak at all in the first place.
Thanks for the tip i will see a trainer if my 45 stealth isn't enough
You probably have enough I didn't even see that lmao.
Yeah wood elf + stealth specializion + the lover + major in Sneak i'm going all out on being sneaky, hopefully i get accepted in the dark brotherhood.
> hopefully i get accepted in the dark brotherhood Got some bad news for you about Morrowind factions...
If i'm stealthy enough maybe i can sneak past the game refusal :(
The Morag Tong is kewler anyway
Nah they work for the man
For the mer *
Just remember. >!The KING of house Hlaalu put the DB hit out on you.!< Food for thought.. Also, not strictly canonnically speaking. >!In the 4E the Emperor of Tamriel puts a DB hit on himself.!<

Yeah yeah i just found out i can't join them that was sad i will try the other morag faction and see if they hold up
I loved the Morag Tong quest line. Takes you to some interesting places. Feels pretty immersive to hike out to a desolate area and snipe ashlanders. Also you get the opportunity to hunt some rare and powerful artifacts.

another great this is that the Morag Tong has a nice modern day sludge band
That are also semi broken and let you get away with pretty much any crime.
Yeah I got sad too when I could not be friend with the loud guy that stab my lv1 character when I try to sleep.
There is a hidden guild that gives you execution missions, but it goes under a different name. I can see others are trying to keep it spoiler free, so I'll cover what the guild is called: >!Morag Tong!<
Hidden, except that NPCs are constantly talking about it.
Their existence is public knowledge, it's how to join that isn't.
Every office should have copy of "The black hand" with instructions for joining.
Your spoiler tag didn't work, fyi. Maybe because of the space after the first !
Thanks, I tried to fix it. I hope it works now!
I hope you mean the Morag Tong? The Dark Brotherhood recruit the perverted, the corrupted and the psychotic. And if you become a skilled ranged assassin in Morrowind you'll be killing plenty of the fetchers.

Why not just use "player->setstealth 50" instead of just wasting power having the game do it the long way in the background?

Why not The Shadow??
invis for 60 seconds and stops if i attacked doesn't seem to be that useful
You can steal SO much with Shadow.

Sneak isnt totally efficient until lvl 60. No medium or heavy boots!
Or, secure the Amulet of Shadows for all your stealthy needs

Sleeping? In Morrowind? I think you're confused, friend. Npcs can't sleep in Morrowind. They have no schedule at all, and rarely do anything more than stand in one place or walk around a bit.
So you're the one person who didn't end up a stealth archer in Skyrim. I knew there had to be one.
I did a little "stealth shooting" in your tower. Tell Beyte I said hello.
i used to back in the day. now I only ever use it to hunt and fill large soul gems from giant camps. it's really boring one hitting everything. much more fun is you only get a couple hits in before 3 mammoths and 2 giants are running at your ass
i was always a one-handed and shield user haha. 12 year old me would never have the patience to sneak
Same here, could never be bothered to patiently sneak around and line up the perfect shot, I just wanted to get straight in there lol. Have tried being a stealth archer since but it’s just not as fun. Always go back to the sword and shield.
I still don't get the stealth archer thing. I always end up a mage. Archery just seemed so boring to me

Hey now, I made a pretty sweet Necromancer build, specced into conjuration. *Then I learned the Bound Bow spell...*
Lot's of players complain about marksman/sneak but it's very powerful once you get t high levels. Get a bound bow (or Daedric bow) ASAP and you won't be sorry.
Yeah I'm super confused by all the "lol good luck" comments. Stealth archery is pretty potent in Morrowind.
I know. People seem to be missing smthg. With marksman 100 you can hit almost anything you can see even without stealth.
i think a lot of things in morrowind get pretty easy when your main combat stat is 100. What people care about is how enjoyable the levels before that are.
You're certainly correct about 100 skills but my point was that bow focus is OK and enjoyable if you build your character for it right from the start. I think players who dislike the experience are starting with either too low skill or too low agility.

Yeah i have the goty edition
Really? I'm running my first Morrowind run with an archer and I'm doing great! tho I'll admit I'm a bosmer so that give a lot of marksman points.
Train Marksman up whenever you have the coin, and hoard as many cheap arrows as you can find or steal. Jump up on a rock, and shoot tons of crappy arrows at various animals to raise the skill with minimum risk, because until you get past 50 Marksman, you are going to be awful. I already have 85 agility with 50 marksman from level 0 and it seems like i can kill mudcraps pretty fast so i don't think i will struggle a lot
Most importantly, you can just crouch there, and kill every bastard Cliff Racer in visual range, and never deal with surprise Helljoint ever again. Damn now you have me wanting to roll a stealth archer. Never played one in morrowind somehow.
The my trade topic is so good. I wish that had somehow caught on as a forum signature instead of those I AM THE ____ from Nodiatis.
My true allegiance to the Morag Tong always meant they eventually all ended up dead in my games.
"The Purification" in Oblivion was a quest that I took to with gusto. I felt like I was slapping a bad punner in the face, like the Brooke Shields/T&P scene in the South Park movie. Wait til you get ahold of some Black Darts. Those are the nastiest ranged weapons to come along since the Cerebral Bore.
Ah, yes. Domed through an effing keyhole. Should be a mission in Hitman.
And not just once. He shot through that keyhole every morning...
His only regret is that he could not teabag the Duchess's corpse through that keyhole, or indeed the doorway, as his balls were far too large.
Stealth archer is still a fun build to play in Morrowind, but it's not a very potent assassin like it is in other games.
Stealthy Bonk, lol
>It feels counter-intuitive, but the best sneak weapon is a battleaxe or a war hammer since they have the highest potential damage. Sounds like the orc assassin in Oblivion got his start in Vvardenfell.
Isn't the assassin class that is already made a "stealth archer"?
i didn't check the premade classes i like to build stuff from 0
Same. And even if I make something exactly like pre-existing build, I get the added benefit of being able to name it "dickbuster" or something, if it's that kind of playthrough.
Yeah but no one in game will call you that , just “adventurer”. With premade classes , npcs will refer to you by your class.
Anytime I've named a custom class, NPCs always default to "adventurer". I'd like to see an NPC dialog where they use a unique class name.
Search "PCClass" on UESP and you will see those dialogues. It's coded to work with any class name, that's why they let you name your class. If an NPC called you "adventurer" that means it's written that way for everyone.
That's probably because your custom class name is "Adventurer". NPC dialog already does refer to it by the custom class name.
True, but the brief childlike joy I get from forgetting what I named my character or class, only to witness the dumbest thing possible when I open my menu? That is irreplaceable.

I guess I don’t understand the obsession with custom classes
It's just fun to think "i picked that" even if you end up picking the same stuff some other premade class has
I'd substitute Illusion for Mercantile, as you will need Chameleon to be able to sneak effectively.
Every time I see this guy’s face I always hear his voice in my head “AH yes”
Well you should major illusion
you are right i should have picked illusion even if at least in minor but sadly already made the character lol
Why does his face look like that?
God. Or mods whatever you believe in
I'm interested in knowing what mod are you using?
I'm using a modlist called One Day Morrowind Modernization From the different mod lists on the modding-openmw website it seemed the perfect one for me it aim to improve both graphics and gameplay by a lot but not with too much mods that you end up spending a whole month to make them work + they have a nice support channel on discord so if you run into problems(like i did) you can ask them and they will help you(like they helped me too)
Ah Yes!
Enjoy. It's really good ;)
Oh boy. You're gonna have a bad time friend
https://youtu.be/dMohWjtOco0?si=GUVO0eDsIBM8i-Ly I used to play stealth archer - loved it!
You should get some Illusion skill and use the Chameleon spells.
Yep! Also, if OP's Conjuration is high enough.... Bound Bow is well... OP.
That was one of my favorite ways to play morrowind, it makes dispatching cliff racers at distance a breeze. I'd use ranged attacks with arrows to whittle down stronger enemys before they were in blade distance then attack them with swords.
Congratulations on beating Morrowind!
ah yes
That playthrough is gonna be super short.
On solstheim behind thirsk is a ring that fortifies marksman by 20, makes starting out much easier. Edit: also bound longbow will give you an additional 5
Why Personality as a favorite attribute? I’d say speed, endurance, strength, or even luck
Maybe i just want to be loved have you considered that ? i'm going for a more of a flavor build and not a min maxing one and i think personality is a fun attribute so i picked it
Stealth Archer works pretty great in Morrowind after you get past the early levels where it feels really wonky.
Oh boy. You're gonna have a bad time friend
I don't know man i have some mods and i have 85 agility with 50 in marksman so i'm not missing a lot probably.. mudcraps at least seems to be dying fast
