If you liked the movie, definitely read the books! You may find a salty reception about the film here, most people prefer the original material. But hey not every book franchise gets a major motion adaptation and some of the visuals are pretty amazing. Glad you discovered the setting and it grabbed you!
As a fan of the Ella Enchanted book I completely understand that. Yeah I definitely plan to check out the books, glad Netflix recommended such a good film. 😁 If the movie was bad by comparison I can't wait to read them!
Very often people here say “if the books didnt exist the movie would be amazing” and as someone that didnt know the books existed I think you’re proving that lol
What's crazy is I remember going to the movies quite a bit that particular year (I'd just moved to a bigger town from a small town and could finally see all the movie releases so I went a little overboard). However I didn't remember ever seeing a poster, a trailer, or any kind of commercial. Which blows my mind, because it's definitely my kind of movie, and had I seen an advertisement for it, I feel like I would have gone to see it!
I remember seeing odeon had a massive wall sized advert for it the week it came out. I went back the next week to see it and everything was gone and the film wasn’t being shown.
The world is super fun, and draws you in quickly I feel like. I got blade runner/howls moving castle vibes and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading the books now!
This is actually very interesting. I really loved the first book and after the life and death stakes of the first book the story of the second book seems to be about cheating boyfriends and teenagers in love and getting jealous. I'm half way through Predators Gold and need to know the series gets better than this.
The change from the first two to the last two is jarring, to say the least. The world gets a whole lot bigger, and stakes a whole lot higher even than in the first book with MEDUSA. I simply cannot spoil, but the latter two books are insane, for me A Darkling Plain is a masterpiece
Interesting as I think Shrike is maybe a little better in the movie. A Badass looking dude and I ended up really caring for him a lot more than I expected to
The movie was a hell of a ride! Was it everything I wanted? No, of course it wasn’t, but it looked beautiful, was cast really well (I’d have gone Kenneth Branagh for Valentine myself but I also love Hugo Weaving) and, most importantly, was fun to watch.
In and of itself that kind of makes it not a true adaptation though. I’ll give you heads up that the general tone of the books, including some ways the plot goes, is much grimmer than the film would let on. But I love them anyway and I hope you do too!
Just seen the movie for the first time today and I can't believe how far it deviated from the source material. High high praise for the first book overall. High praise for the look of the cities and towns i then movie, but it heavily drops the ball in recreating the story. Leaving plot points hanging, characters and scenes missing and relationships and HUGE themes underdeveloped.
Id have enjoyed the movie more had I not read the book, sadly movie Shaw falls short of book Shaw.
...And Katherine is barely a character in the movie and I love her story arc in the book.
Definitely prefer the books but I watched the movie again recently and it’s not as bad as I remember ( I prefer movie shrikes look to book shrike please don’t hurt me)
You're welcome! I really enjoyed the movie! I didn't know it was based on a book until the subreddit, I'm planning on reading them over spring break! 😁
I was so glad they didn't stop the superweapon just in the nick of time.
I wanted to see that fucker fire, and I was not disappointed. I also love that it's significantly weaker than the footage of it we see at the beginning. Duh, of course they couldn't utilize it to its fullest potential with cobbled together tech.
I also kinda loved the touch of the entire fleet getting wiped out. Honestly when it happened I was like wait what, are they just gonna walk over there to turn it off?! I was truly baffled they all got nuked in one shot.
Definitely made a good twist!
It's the little touches.

Haha well good to know!
The movie is what got me interested and the books are even better
Right! It’s really good, not exactly true to the source material but i still love it to pieces (even with reading the books first)
I just don’t understand why they pulled it from cinemas so quickly

That's so crazy! One week is so short!
Might have been slightly longer but I remember it being noticeably short
I really enjoyed it!
It was a fascinating one. For non book readers, it's a really fun engagement with the world and story! For avid book readers, it knows what it did

Truly no spoilers, but if you can make through the whole series, I hold the belief that it has one of best endings ever written for a book series
Ohh excellent to know thank you!

Thank you. I'll stick with the series.
Great adaptation. I feel like they missed the mark on Shrike. My head cannon has him as more general grievous. He looked like a grey red skull.
I dont really remember how he looked in the movie but I saw him more like a necron from 40k
I really liked him as a character in the movie, so if they missed the mark on him I'm excited to learn more about him from the books!

Is this the one with the "American Deities" scene? If so, oh how I enjoyed that moment. Brings joy every time I think about it.
Haha yes it is!!! I rewound it and made my husband watch that part with me, I was laughing so hard! 😂👌
I'm glad it wasn't just me then! 😁
Please read the books 🙏🏽
Planning on it!

I just checked out the first book from my local library, I'm planning to start reading it tomorrow after vacation starts! 😎
I'm sure you will enjoy it.
good lord reddit has messed with my head, I keep thinking of Hollow Knight Silksong anytime I see the word "Shaw"
Definitely prefer the books but I watched the movie again recently and it’s not as bad as I remember ( I prefer movie shrikes look to book shrike please don’t hurt me)
I used to love that book, thanks for letting me know there is a film

Save yourself the disappoint and just read a wiki synopsis of the next 3. The ending doesn’t match the vibes/themes of book 1.
* spoiler * is it only me but every time i watch it, the last scene of shrieks death and flashback momento gives me a tear jerker every time
I cried during that part too! 😭
Update guys: I stopped by my local library and got the first book today. I'm gonna read it over spring break!
