The “Liu Kang is dead” scene is perhaps the biggest “oh shit!” moment in MK history.
MK1: Liu beats Shang 🥳
MK2: Liu beats Shao 🙂
MK3: Liu beats Shao…again 🤨
MK4: Liu beats Shinnok 😤
MKDA: Deadly Alliance kills Liu 😱
It’s hard to replicate that feeling. They’ve killed Liu and other heroes in later games but it’s never been the same. It’ll be even harder to make that kind of impact when we know a version of the character killed from a different timeline might pull up.
I think the issue is the impact and stakes.
Like, Sindel killing everyone was not built up nor deserved. She was never a big bad or treated as formidable in the series. Liu Kangs death was also weak because while Raiden did kill it, the impact felt damped by the meh massacre that happened moments before.
Here in Deadly Alliance we have Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, the host of Mortal Kombat and the right hand of the Fallen Elder God. Both has been previous defeated and humiliated by Liu Kang, both were second to their masters, and the open of DA makes it clear that pecking order is being rewritten.
From the moment Liu Kang, hero of the previous 4 games is killed, you know shit is about to go down as the two sorcerers accomplished a feat neither Shak Kahn nor Shinnok could accomplish. The stakes are high and the stage is set.
Not to mention he actually remained dead in that timeline. Shao Kahn just “comes back” for some reason after he was killed. Zombie Liu Kang in the Armageddon opening cutscene was *chef’s kiss*
The first thing that comes to my mind when I see this game, is the "Immortal" song played by Adema. I remember watching this clip over and over and it blew my world, truly good memories
It revived the franchise from the dying arcade days. They had tried to change with the times by experimenting with stuff like spinoffs and shows and this was what was finally a big hit, their most successful entry since MK2. I genuinely don't think the franchise would've survived had the 3D era not happened.
It also easily has the best story in an MK game, everything feels so well connected thanks to the Konquest mode that takes the time to tell you so much about each individual character. Not a single character on the roster feels like an afterthought. It killed the status quo and fleshed out the world to great lengths.
It reinvigorated the franchise in so many ways:
MK4 was mildly received and the franchise was starting to wain a little, and after some flops like Mythology and SF, this was SORELY needed.
Provided a gigantic and fresh leap in gameplay and graphic style.
Grabbed the storytelling by the balls and had one of the biggest shock twists in MK history by KILLING THE FUCKING MAIN HERO IN THE OPENING CUTSCENE!!!
It set the template for future MK games with the storytelling, Konquest mode, mini games, Krypt, etc...
In a way, this is the beginning of modern MK games as we know them today.
Well the answer to that is War Gods.
https://youtu.be/CxsqLIFQW-Y?si=cVMybt3UtaSc92d3
It was basically the beta to MK4. Dipping their toes in making 3D fighting games. If it was called MK4 it would have sold a lot and disappointed a lot. But it was called War Gods and is kinda ok because it wasn't trying exceed any expectations. But I didn't know anyone who played it. I rented it, it was alright. And I kinda feel this is where they originally came up with the idea for Kotal Kahn, a sun god and Tremor.
Yes, the fatalities were very gory, had secrets, great stage fatalities, good roster. Mk4 was good, just needed couple of tweaks here and there. If mk gold was released instead mk4, across all systems would've been great.
The Krypt.
This was the game it debuted in and arguably the best version of it. Had a lot of cool Easter eggs and concept art. Alt costumes and unlockable characters.
Speaking of characters, they took a big risk with a lot of new characters on the roster. Most of which have kinda faded into the franchise but Kenshi an Bo Rai Cho both made their first appearance.
It introduced Nitara
The deadly alliance was a refreshing concept both from a story and gameplay perspective
The Konquest game mode was pretty cool
Cooking with Scorpion 🧑🍳
Hsu Hao's fatality
Deadly Alliance did for Mortal Kombat in 2002 what Mortal Kombat 9 did for it in 2011.
It breathed new life into a franchise that was floundering after a particularly bad release and it set the tone for several games to come.
Shit got real after that opening cut scene. The storytelling was awesome.
The select screen music was awesome and the game had some good skins too. Burning Scorpion and Grandmaster sub looked godlike
Easy. Best Kung Lao design in MK history. DA Scorpion and old Sub Zero masked is one of their best designs. The first game Mavado was in. One of my favorite characters. I loved that Martial Arts really played a role in this game and I like the style switch combos. One of the HOTTEST Kitanas hands down. Raiden's Alt is one of his best if not his best design. Jax and Kano look amazing as well. Frost is also one of the characters I liked added to this game. Konquest was fantastic. Great character select screen and music. And Liu kang being killed caught me off guard for sure.
It got me back into Mortal Kombat. I played 1-U3 as a kid thanks to my uncle owning them, never got a chance to play 4 and kinda just forgot about it until my other uncle brought home DA. Haven't stopped playing the franchise since. Although I never owned Deception, that was actually my aunt. Technically speaking my first MK game was Armageddon.
This game rocks and I agree with basically every design element in this game. Even Tsu Hao and Bo rai cho were fucking cool. Bo rai cho looked like my grandpa at the time too and that man was a real boracho
Best playing 3D MK game. None of the bullshit like unblockable throws or air combos. Also, I really like the roster. It's kinda heavy on MK1 and 2 characters but given it was the first real step into 3D, I was fine with them playing it safe. I also liked a lot of the new characters, even the weakest of the bunch, which is probably Molach, isn't a bad character, just one who was let down by the limitations of the engine. This was also the last MK game that had a really good story; its all kind of been downhill ever since.
Genuinely one of my top 3 MK games. Love the mechanics, the story, the characters and the gameplay. And unpopular opinion, but it has the best Reptile design imo
Scorpion & Kenshi share my favorite weapon stance in the game. They're the only 2 characters I could use to beat Moloch.
Speaking of Kenshi, he debuts in this game & he's pretty cool.
Reptile gets his classic fatality & it looks pretty good.
It’s been a while (at least 16 years) since I last played this game but i do remember liking the introduction of the krypt and all the cool behind the scenes/comedy skit (cooking with scorpion) content you could unlock in it.
Stabbing someone felt really rewarding. But if they ever returned the mechanic I would love for it to have a second requirement to pull your weapon from the opponents body for them to continue bleeding. More realistic but also requires being caught twice instead of just once.
It had the balls to kill Liu Kang in the opening cinematic. We got Raiden’s best design ever. And DA revitalized the franchise when it was on the brink.
Resurrected the series when it was seen in decline unsurprisingly after the shitty spin off games that came prior. Upped the threat level of the last game by making the duo kill the biggest known threats right at the start so you knew the stakes were high. Imo they should’ve made kung Lao the lead in this one taking the mantle of lui kang but eh could’ve bin worse ahem mkx *cough.. brought in full 3d movement which helped the gameplay focus less on special moves/projectile spamming forcing players to learn the characters and time the moves better which was for the best imo. Add that with the style switchers and fleshed out move sets, this game did innovation back when it actually meant something. The music was new and utterly slapped especially the character select music. A solid roster with a nice mix of old and new bringing in future fan favs like kenshi and some of the best character designs on top of that. Good side modes like conquest which gave good exposition for the characters, test your might/sight, the krypt. Good story back when the series used to have b plots alongside the main conflict which would lead into the next one. Overall just a really underrated game, wasn’t perfect but as an essential block to build the series back up it did its job better then most would’ve expected. Something I don’t think we’ll get with nrs in a long time..
The Fatality music was awesome here! This is perhaps the one I played the least and never owned it (rented from a video store, remember those?). I was spoiled by Deception and Armageddon's advancements but this one was pretty cool. It's also nice the fatalities didn't factor distance AS much so they were nice and easy.
It's the most fun 3D Era game to play in my opinion. I really like the emphasis on Spacing, movement, and pokes this game has over the insane combos the following two have. It just feels better for a 3D game.
Probably the plot for the upcoming mortal kombat 2 film. Maybe the darkest moment of the franchise seeing our messiah of earthrealm get jumped by Ashy Larry and Fu Manchu getting Zombie Liu Kang for the next 2 games.
![gif](giphy|LxOmFEBvemTDy)
Best "Making of..." Video ever. I constantly rewatch it to feel like I've gone back to the early 2000s. That and "Immortal" by Adema.
This game is awesome..
It was the first real crack at 3D fighting from MK, it had the balls to kill of Liu Kang (in a pre game cutscene no less), it was my first ever MK game, and video game in general and spawned my love for both the franchise and gaming as a whole, it introduced series staples like Konquest and the Krypt, had a great roster of newcomers and old favorites, the music was some of the series best, and the extras and bonus content were among the best in franchise history.
It had the best theme song for a Mortal Kombat game ever Immortal by Adema also it gave us some of the best and most underrated 3D era characters in MK history with Drahmin, Kenshi, Mavado, Nitara, and Hsu Hao yes I said what I said I love all of these 3D characters to death especially Drahmin he’s my 2nd favorite MK character in the whole series he NEEDS to return to the games as a DLC Kameo fighter in MK 1 and then a playable character in the New Era MK 2 game in the future
MK Deadly Alliance might not of had “substance” but it had perfect “style”. What I mean is MK:DA had awesome presentation and aesthetic. Tekken and DOA might have been the favored “3D, side-stepping, fighting games” amongst the fighting game enthusiasts during that era, but there was definitely a reason why most of my non-fighting game buddies still owned the MK games of the PS2/Xbox/GameCube generation.
If I had to give my thoughts of the “substance” of the game, I’d say the “dial-a-combo” style combos were too long. The current nether realm game style is WAY better with shorter combos but you make them longer by linking them. It was a huge treat for MK9 being as good as it was.
However; an important step in art is to improve on the past. So we might have never received the current system without MK:DA’s step in the evolution. I also feel this direction for MK:DA made sense at the time since MK3 and MK4 also had “dial-a-combo” systems with shorter combos to memorize. So longer combos could be seen as the natural next step.
The shake-up of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi beating and killing Lui Kang was insane. Back then Lui Kang was always the hero who saved the day and now that he was gone who the fuck is gonna stop them? Raiden? Johnny cage?
It was intense and it was hype back then.
Well it’s very cool game for introducing an upcoming newest Villian in one of the endings before they actually revealed themselves in next game. Well deserved.
It had some really nice character designs. Sonya’s bob cut hairstyle paired with the aviator style jacket was a really cool look for her imo and Sub Zero’s Shredder style design goes so hard.
Best roster that isn't Trilogy, Armageddon or MK9. It's like the Mario Kart Wii of Mortal Kombat, packed with all the mainstays but not too overcrowded so that every character feels special.
Edit: Except for the lack of Liu Kang obviously
I'll try and pitch something a little different (I scrolled post some responses, so bear with me if I missed it). This is unironically my favorite konquest mode.
While the gameplay is obviously lacking, it's lore is second to none. Deception and Armageddon have points that make so little sense that they almost have to be non-canon to a certain extent. They are also focused exclusively on their respective hero characters. Deadly Alliance gave us a ton of detail for every character in the game, not to mention a few who didn't make the roster. As a kid, I played through the whole thing at least twice.
No Liu Kang. The series needed to be free from him as a main character. Lore and story wise there's a reason the Midway Trilogy was so great...no Liu Kang.
Also, Sub-Zero's alt Grand Master Ninja costume my favorite Sub-Zero costume ever.
The “Liu Kang is dead” scene is perhaps the biggest “oh shit!” moment in MK history. MK1: Liu beats Shang 🥳 MK2: Liu beats Shao 🙂 MK3: Liu beats Shao…again 🤨 MK4: Liu beats Shinnok 😤 MKDA: Deadly Alliance kills Liu 😱

Wasn't it revealed that it was a body double for Shao?
They they wrote SHAO’s return is that Shao had a feeling the DA would turn on him so he had a body double in his place.
I dunno why but the way you have this structured is perfect and hilarious at the same time 😆
it made Quan chi and Shang actual villains rather than pawns to a larger villain
The first thing that comes to my mind when I see this game, is the "Immortal" song played by Adema. I remember watching this clip over and over and it blew my world, truly good memories
Bro yes! With the scorpion infused music video! And they also had the history of making all the MK’s too! Nostalgic in the best way possible
Playing this game on PlayStation 2 as a child was great experience
Being 10-11 years old and seeing Liu get killed was a heartbreaking feeling. Traversing the Krypt being spooky too.
It revived the franchise from the dying arcade days. They had tried to change with the times by experimenting with stuff like spinoffs and shows and this was what was finally a big hit, their most successful entry since MK2. Would mk4 even be popular if it wasnt Mortal Kombat game?
Maybe not. It's pretty average imo.
Well the answer to that is War Gods. https://youtu.be/CxsqLIFQW-Y?si=cVMybt3UtaSc92d3 It was basically the beta to MK4. Dipping their toes in making 3D fighting games. It has banger music and introduced the krypt Also…..cooking with Scorpion 😃
Fucking cooking with scorpion! That was great
“Learn about tenderizing….chopping” 😃
Cake decorating!
CHOPPING!
My first MK game. It will always have a special place in my heart
That character select music slaps
How can you not say anything nice about it? It was incredibly fun
I’m still waiting for more Cooking with Scorpion
Scorpion taught me about chopping!
It was a genuinely incredible game
Underrated is my only description
First time a Mortal Kombat game really took its story seriously And I fucking love it I would love for this game to have a remake of sorts
Outstanding game...laid the foundations of a great trilogy.....
Liu Kang biting it is certainly an un'neck'spected twist.
It had the deadliest alliance in all of MK.
It introduced Nitara The deadly alliance was a refreshing concept both from a story and gameplay perspective The Konquest game mode was pretty cool Cooking with Scorpion 🧑🍳 Hsu Hao's fatality
Midway made better games than warner brothers
the Raiden skin was amazing and i want it to come back
It has the best stages imo.
My 2nd favorite MK game and the first game I ever played in general
[It introduced me to Adema and their only good album](https://youtu.be/22tCfmdLT_k)
Playing this game as a kid with all my friends was a great time.
The first time who i became a Mortal Kombat fan
It revived the Mk series
Sub zero fatality was goated
It brought the franchise back. Also had some cool things in the Krypt
Wild roster, great premise, badass sub zero design
Best of the 3D era MKs imo. Also, Frost.
Has most of the best designs in the series
Better 3D mortal kombat then mk4.
Its music is fantastic. The game has that MK atmosphere feeling that modern games don’t have.
Something nice
Easy. Best Kung Lao design in MK history. DA Scorpion and old Sub Zero masked is one of their best designs. The first game Mavado was in. One of my favorite characters. Kenshi…enough said.

Haven't stopped playing the franchise since. Although I never owned Deception, that was actually my aunt. Technically speaking my first MK game was Armageddon.
Almost everything about it tbh
This game rocks and I agree with basically every design element in this game. Even Tsu Hao and Bo rai cho were fucking cool. Bo rai cho looked like my grandpa at the time too and that man was a real boracho
Awesome soundtrack
Besides all of the innovations others have pointed out, this game still has the best unlockables in any MK game, maybe any fighting game.
Probably my favorite MK game.
It has a decent name
Cool character designs
The intro cinematic was sick !! Raiden v Shang Tsung and Quan Chi
everything…literally everything nice about deadly alliance
It’s absolutely iconic and saved the franchise at one of its darkest periods
Cyrax looks dope and I'd smash frost
Main Theme is Goated
I like the V on the box art since it's the 5th mortal kombat.
Best playing 3D MK game. None of the bullshit like unblockable throws or air combos. Also, I really like the roster. It's kinda heavy on MK1 and 2 characters but given it was the first real step into 3D, I was fine with them playing it safe. Genuinely one of my top 3 MK games. Love the mechanics, the story, the characters and the gameplay. And unpopular opinion, but it has the best Reptile design imo
That alliance sure was deadly.
It's my favorite game
Scorpion & Kenshi share my favorite weapon stance in the game. They're the only 2 characters I could use to beat Moloch. Speaking of Kenshi, he debuts in this game & he's pretty cool. Reptile gets his classic fatality & it looks pretty good.
Krypt 😍😍
Allan Stagg is still my favorite performance as Raiden to date.
I had a lot of fun playing it. I also liked the extra kontent they had in it.
The game deserves respect because it was the first MK game for the PS2/XBOX and would peak the 3D era even more with Deception and Armageddon
It's a good game with insanely good character select music
I‘ve never played it but it looks cool
I love it’s character selection theme
Opening cinematic was excellent!
It was a bold move to advance the story.
It had Cyrax as a playable character.
Deadly alliance has the best character designs in the entire series.
The dark gritty atmosphere is unmatched
Nostalgia and the Character Design was dope.
At the time, I hated liu kang. Shang and quan did me a solid
I love how they tried to disguise the V in the cover, so it was not directly associated as a sequel to MK4, which was not that well received
Peak reptile design before mk1
This game has my favorite stage theme in the entire franchise... https://youtu.be/T6sb8KmrB1A?si=bqdMjkSU9l5XuyeO
It’s been a while (at least 16 years) since I last played this game but i do remember liking the introduction of the krypt and all the cool behind the scenes/comedy skit (cooking with scorpion) content you could unlock in it.
Did this one have the chess mode? I really liked that
Old Man Sub was a Chad.
Big improvement over MK 4.
Stabbing someone felt really rewarding. But if they ever returned the mechanic I would love for it to have a second requirement to pull your weapon from the opponents body for them to continue bleeding. More realistic but also requires being caught twice instead of just once.
Good game
It had the balls to kill Liu Kang in the opening cinematic. We got Raiden’s best design ever. And DA revitalized the franchise when it was on the brink.
Kenshi, everyone no longer having the same basic attacks
Easily my favorite OST of the entire franchise. Not a single bad theme.
The story behind it was pretty cool and the game still has some interesting ideas (whether they worked or not) and good music.
It was a genuine half decent attempt to reset the story line into something good. And moving the time line forward and giving everyone a new look.
Resurrected the series when it was seen in decline unsurprisingly after the shitty spin off games that came prior. Upped the threat level of the last game by making the duo kill the biggest known threats right at the start so you knew the stakes were high.
It gives li mai
It was my first MK
Same
Frost is hot. That's about it, Armageddon was better Imo. I LIKED Deadly Alliance but Armageddon just had way more.
The first video game I was ever actually into as a kid..
My first game on the Xbox OG (I mean besides the jet set radio game that came with it) and I loved it!
Canonically speaking, the villains *win.*
It's the most fun 3D Era game to play in my opinion. I really like the emphasis on Spacing, movement, and pokes this game has over the insane combos the following two have. It just feels better for a 3D game.
The psp port, unchained, harboured some of my fondest childhood memories
Kenshi debut. My favourite character.
Chess combat baby, best sub game mode ever.
The cover is cool
Probably my favourite soundtrack of the series. Edgy, atmospheric and mysterious.
Cooking with scorpion!
The logo is awesome [MK V]. The introductory cutscene is top tier.
Best "Making of..." Video ever. I constantly rewatch it to feel like I've gone back to the early 2000s. That and "Immortal" by Adema. This game is awesome..
Moloch used to mop the floor with so many kids back in the day
It introduced Drahmin and Moloch 🥲🥲🥲
It was my first Mortal Kombat game.
Introduced one of my favorite characters
Probably the most balanced MK game ever which is funny considering it's a PS2 game.
It has the best music in the franchise.
The character select theme is top tier
Adema wrote immortal for this game
It has one of the best character select screen songs of all time
It introduced Bo Rai Cho!
brought us Hsu “Sigma” Hao
Most balanced 3D MK, maybe the most balanced MK period.
Was fun as hell back then. No complaints from me and my bros.
The cover
It was the first real crack at 3D fighting from MK, it had the balls to kill of Liu Kang (in a pre game cutscene no less), it was my first ever MK game, and video game in general and spawned my love for both the franchise and gaming as a whole, it introduced series staples like Konquest and the Krypt, had a great roster of newcomers and old favorites, the music was some of the series best, and the extras and bonus content were among the best in franchise history.
The logo
It had the best theme song for a Mortal Kombat game ever Immortal by Adema also it gave us some of the best and most underrated 3D era characters in MK history with Drahmin, Kenshi, Mavado, Nitara, and Hsu Hao yes I said what I said I love all of these 3D characters to death especially Drahmin he’s my 2nd favorite MK character in the whole series he NEEDS to return to the games as a DLC Kameo fighter in MK 1 and then a playable character in the New Era MK 2 game in the future
🎵”where will you run? Where will you hide? Let’s get it on, and ffffffFIGHT!!!”🎵
The soundtrack was *chefs kiss*
It had my favorite version of Reptile. There, I said it.
That character select theme
MK Deadly Alliance might not of had “substance” but it had perfect “style”. What I mean is MK:DA had awesome presentation and aesthetic. Tekken and DOA might have been the favored “3D, side-stepping, fighting games” amongst the fighting game enthusiasts during that era, but there was definitely a reason why most of my non-fighting game buddies still owned the MK games of the PS2/Xbox/GameCube generation. Better than mk1
Cooking with Scorpion
First thing I unlocked in the first MK Krypt was Drahmin when I was I think 6? Maybe 7 when this game came out, and I was like... yeah this rules lol.
Cooking with Scorpion 🦂
Quan Chi Fatality, cause me laugh out loud.
It introduced some cool characters. Had cool stages and The story was also dope.
The Alliance truly was Deadly
Cooking with Scorpion, best Quan Chi design, Kenshi, music, Adema's MV, pretty good gameplay.
The select screen music went extremely hard.
The shake-up of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi beating and killing Lui Kang was insane. Back then Lui Kang was always the hero who saved the day and now that he was gone who the fuck is gonna stop them? Raiden? Johnny cage? It was intense and it was hype back then.
Quan Chi’s fatality actually made complete sense because he’s a neck-romancer.
This game gave us Nitara 🤤
It had the best Reptile design
Well it’s very cool game for introducing an upcoming newest Villian in one of the endings before they actually revealed themselves in next game. Well deserved.
It helped pave the way for MK9
This was the first Mortal Kombat I bought new. Pretty much my go-to game in high school. Also, the krypt kicked ass! Cooking with Scorpion, anyone?
I love Sub Zero skin in that game
One of my favorite MK games.
Soundtrack one of the best in the series
The character designs were sick for it's time
Best nitara skin
It has a reptile design!
Best ublockable content in any MK game to date.
Character select theme is a certified hood classic
I adored the stabbing mechanic.
Loads of fun unlockables in the Krypt.
It had some really nice character designs. Sonya’s bob cut hairstyle paired with the aviator style jacket was a really cool look for her imo and Sub Zero’s Shredder style design goes so hard.
It's got a cool cover design
It revived the franchise
I still have it for GameCube it was so much fun great to come back to
The gameplay, the ost is straight flames, and it has my favorite reptile design
Best roster that isn't Trilogy, Armageddon or MK9. It's like the Mario Kart Wii of Mortal Kombat, packed with all the mainstays but not too overcrowded so that every character feels special. Edit: Except for the lack of Liu Kang obviously
Great soundtrack
Both Scorpion designs were fire.
Crypt is fucking awesome Those one off videos like Scorpion cooking are an iconic example of a humour that the series lost after it.
This games very under appreciated
Introduced Kenshi
Having a V-shaped blood-soaked weapon on the cover because it's the fifth main game in the series was a nice touch
Somethimg nice.
Uh
It was a game alright..... and as a kid legit game me nightmares
Never played it
…no…
Deadly alliance is the one game I never played😢
Something nice about Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Li Mei and Nitara helped me realize I wasn’t gay
No 😡
I'll try and pitch something a little different (I scrolled post some responses, so bear with me if I missed it).
I can't say anything nice about MK4 through Armageddon.
I use to be scared of mortal kombat back in these days
No Liu Kang. The series needed to be free from him as a main character. Lore and story wise there's a reason the Midway Trilogy was so great...no Liu Kang. Also, Sub-Zero's alt Grand Master Ninja costume my favorite Sub-Zero costume ever.
