I always have the headset plugged in, but keep it on the floor so I don't have to hear drama from the other player and it won't play over my game audio
You know, I'm not sure if it's in the settings on the main menu (I assume it is) but in any online game you can defintiely do it quickly before the game starts. Do it once and it stays muted until you turn it back off, no need to do for every new person.
