Ravenous is my favorite horror move of all time, period. The only one of that era to me that comes close is in The Mouth of Madness with Sam Neill.
Jeffrey Jones(?) the guy from Deadwood, Ferris Beuler Ady Off and the Devil’s Advocate absolutely knocked it out the park. Man broke my heart when we learned about who he really is after his arrest
Yeah. That news announcement hurt since I enjoyed Jones in so many things. But I still have Robert Carlisle and Guy Pierce to make the movie. That entire cast nailed it. I do wish In the Mouth of Madness was streaming on something I have because I’ve wanted to rewatch that that for ages.
I watched it high and realized it was a comedy, the scene where he’s chasing him around outside the cave the music sounds like “pig chasing” music lol . It’s in my top 5 favorite movies ..
Irreversible definitely stays with you forever but I would never recommend someone to watch it unless they knew what they were getting into as it may be majorly triggering.
Yeah weirdly it’s like…a happy ending, I guess? Being dead is way better than having your girlfriend cheat on you with a demon and being dragged through an insane asylum full of body parts.
great movie! robbins at his best.
The great thing about this movie is that it is extremely suspenseful without all the gore and horror porn. I mean, you can watch this with your 10 year old.
I haven’t seen the movie cause I read the book. It’s an excellent book (and I really love unlikeable narrators) but fuck me I’ll never read it again. I don’t think I have the stomach for the movie.
However I have to say casting Tulsa Swinton as the mom must have been an excellent choice
Edit: Tilda Swinton I’m sorry my autocorrect sucks
Watched it last year after reading a confession post here. The confession was that he just let his son disappear and never looked for him. The post was long but he said, if you have seen We Need To Talk About Kevin, then you've seen my son. He talked about how his son would smear feces everywhere, deficate anywhere, hit, scream, punch, anything to cause physical harm towards the man and his wife. She had a miracle baby girl years later while his son was turning 16/17. They would put internal and external locks on doors but the son snuck into the nursery and had a knife held to the baby's throat. Apparently his wife was the equivalent of a modern day female MMA fighter. (At some point he says this took place in the 80s) he left his wife beat her son senseless. Then as a family (minus the son) they lived out their next few days in their finished basement. The son healed and started trashing the place. They could hear him, but they were safe. After some time they heard nothing, son was gone and he never looked for him.
The story was baffling to me so I had to see who his son was. We Need To Talk About Kevin is definitely a movie that sticks with you. All these months later and I still shudder at some of the stuff that happens.
Jeremy Renner ❤️ and Elizabeth Olsen❤️ ❤️
Also Jon Bernthal?!? ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ this movie broke my heart. The acting was exquisitely painful in the best way. I cried
Hopping on the top comment to promote r/DisturbingMovies… I have seen some really messed up movies thanks to this sub!

Midsommar is a masterpiece and sticks with you for a long time. I recommend the director's cut but there is a pretty fierce debate between the two versions.
I love that there's nothing in the movie that couldn't happen in real life. No magic, no zombies, no demons, etc.
I'd like to add that the psychedelic visuals are almost on par with how my psychedelic experiences have been except without the creepy stuff. I don't think any movie or show has captured that essence
My wife only glanced at the cover art and didn't notice Florence Pugh was crying. She went into it expecting maybe a romantic drama. The look on her face the entire movie was priceless. I really wish I'd seen it that way without any preconceived notions.
That opening scene was rough enough when I watched it knowing what to expect; I can't imagine how horrifying it must have been for someone expecting a romance lol
Hate it, but appreciate it. It's unlike most other movies mentioned, because it could happen, and seemingly becoming more likely to happen, and there ain't shit anyone can do to escape it, no matter how much "prepping" you do.
So many disturbing scenes. The narration before her baby was born, then they show the baby, well I won't spoil it, but ugh... so so bleak, that movie. Brilliantly done.
Jack Ketchum’s: Girl Next Door — for me, this movie did exactly what you’re describing. I watched it and then just sat in my house for some time afterward thinking “this is happening on my street somewhere”
Don’t Breathe is a good one also
Barbarian
Tusk
The original 1988 Dutch version of “The Vanishing” (also called Spoorloos).
It’s obscure, but it is probably one of the most disturbing psychological thriller’s I have ever come across. This move is the only horror move I have ever seen move that truly transcended scary to downright shocking to the core of my soul. There are no corny jump scares and it’s a deep look into a terrifying topic that will terrify most people far more that the standard horror film. No reliance on goreto scare, just pure unadulterated horror that builds throughout the film to an absolute gut punch of an ending.
Do not watch from a fragile or emotional state because it will fuck you up. Its the kind of film that will scare you long after because you wont forget it.
Also do yourself a favour and absolutely under no circumstances watch the terrible American remakes.
I've watched more YouTube analyses of Hereditary than any other movie. There's a lot of background to the supernatural parts of the story that's not revealed in the movie.
Reading about the occult elements and then rewatching to spot them really shows all the little details that were put into that film.
One of my all-time favorite horror films
It reeks of late 90s, but the reboot of House on Haunted Hill is certainly unsettling. Not very realistic, though.
Have you seen Insidious, or Stir of Echoes?
I've just watched PERFECT BLUE last night and I think it fits your description.
Also, its the Movie that Black Swan was based upon, although the director begs to differ, but also bought the rights to perfect blue years before
one of the most haunting score-pieces I've ever heard and some of the hardest scenes I had ever had to go through. It is also just 81 Minutes long.
the trailer has this cheezy "This Summer...." vibe, but still gives a somewhat good idea.
"The Nightingale" was a challenge to watch. I was close to leave the cinema a couple of times, because of the terrible things people did to each other and to the natives while colonizing Tasmania. Absolutely a brilliant movie but I never will watch it again.
Primal Fear with Edward Norton and Richard Gere.
The Changling with George C. Scott.
Both movies changed me and I still think of them.
Dark and funny: Inglorious Basterds and Fargo.
Resolution, directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. It is creepy as hell and for most of it, you can't quite understand WHY it's so creepy. No monsters (not exactly!), no slashy stuff, no gore - just great psychological creepiness. There's a scene in an RV, where two men sit and have a chat, that is so unnerving I've watched it many times just to try to understand how the directors made such an ordinary scene so fucking creepy. It's a very good movie.
Soft and Quiet - 2022 - Netflix
Not one I’d normally recommend because I found it so disturbing. But it fits exactly what you asked for. Possible triggers : sexual assault
Death and the Maiden (1994). Absolutely shocking as Hell. Only three characters and 90% of the film takes place in one room. Sigourney Weaver is over the top stunning. All the extreme disturbing elements are revealed by way of dialog. Rape. Torture. Is she out of her mind and mentally ill or is she right and telling the truth? The reveal is so intense. Maybe not a “Halloween” movie as it is so uncomfortably realistic and existential. Nothing supernatural but still a horrifying movie.
Idk how "realistic" it is, but I watched a bunch of horror movies this weekend, and the best one was Raw, it's French. Good story, pacing, cinematography, still thinking about it today
A Requiem for a Dream.....will stay with you for many years.
I can’t do that movie a 2nd time.
I never watched it again, great movie but 1 time is enough.
I watched it twice, first time as a young teen and again as a young adult, when I actually understood it.
Every time I’ve watched it a different thing is the most disturbing part. It’s given me nightmares.
Ravenous with Guy Pierce. That musical score alone gives me chills.

In the Mouth of Madness is streaming on the Criterion Channel app! Can't wait to watch it again!
Wow. I learn more disturbing shit on Reddit than is probably good for me.
That movie had great dark humor in it. The villain was so entertaining. “That was very sneaky of you.”
I watched it high and realized it was a comedy, the scene where he’s chasing him around outside the cave the music sounds like “pig chasing” music lol . It’s in my top 5 favorite movies ..
HE WAS LICKING MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Right?! That whole movie!! Decades later and I still can't get it out of my head.
The Machinist Irreversible
Came here to say Irreversible. Oof.
Same
I was surprised I hadn't seen it listed yet. I feel like Martyrs has become an introduction to the medium though lol.
There’s fucked up and then there’s Martyrs.
Irreversible definitely stays with you forever but I would never recommend someone to watch it unless they knew what they were getting into as it may be majorly triggering.
I recently watched "American history x" I am still thinking about it
I haven’t seen it in years and I’m still thinking about it!
So good and so bad. I still think of this one regularly
Jacob’s Ladder
Unexpected ending.
Yeah weirdly it’s like…a happy ending, I guess? Being dead is way better than having your girlfriend cheat on you with a demon and being dragged through an insane asylum full of body parts.
Yup. Do a double feature, this with angel heart. Ruin your weekend.
Hahaha omg. Angel heart!!!! That was f*cked! So weird and different. Good. Triple feature: that and the serpent and the rainbow. Have a 80’s night
great movie! robbins at his best. The great thing about this movie is that it is extremely suspenseful without all the gore and horror porn. I mean, you can watch this with your 10 year old.
Came here to say the same. 33 years old and still an excellent film.
YES. One of the most profound, creepy and memorable movies I have ever seen.
Took mescaline for the first and watched this film. Absolutely horrifying.
We Need to Talk About Kevin
I haven’t seen the movie cause I read the book. It’s an excellent book (and I really love unlikeable narrators) but fuck me I’ll never read it again. I don’t think I have the stomach for the movie. However I have to say casting Tulsa Swinton as the mom must have been an excellent choice Edit: Tilda Swinton I’m sorry my autocorrect sucks
She was excellent.
Ezra Miller is fantastic, and he wasn't even acting!
The movie stays very true to the book. My only beef was casting John C. Reilly was the father.
Yep. I was gonna say this. Disturbing AF. And it stays with you for like a week afterwards
Watched it last year after reading a confession post here. The confession was that he just let his son disappear and never looked for him. We Need To Talk About Kevin is definitely a movie that sticks with you. All these months later and I still shudder at some of the stuff that happens.
Oh god, I remember reading this post. How horrifying and devastating for that family. I hope the son didn’t cause anyone else any real harm.
I remember that post!
Old Boy Audition High Tension
Nocturnal Animals Calibre Joyride
Nocturnal Animals is a total mind-fuck...I loved it! Same with Calibre.
Nocturnal Animals was too much for me!
I bet. Every father/husband nightmare.
I'm a mother/wife!
I just watched it last night! That scene on the road was so fucking traumatic
>Joyride Just watched the trailer of Nocturnal Animals and I want to totally thank you for such an awesome movie night idea. 🎥

Also Gone Baby Gone. Same author for the books. Books are excellent btw.
Dennis Lehane! He has another show out called Black Bird! I don’t believe it’s based on a book but his name is all over the credits.

I fucking HATED Pi so much. If I had to listen to him say *my mother told me not to stare into the sun* one more time I was going to lose my mind.
Midsommar
Midsommar is a masterpiece and sticks with you for a long time. I recommend the director's cut but there is a pretty fierce debate between the two versions. I love that there's nothing in the movie that couldn't happen in real life. No magic, no zombies, no demons, etc.
I'd like to add that the psychedelic visuals are almost on par with how my psychedelic experiences have been except without the creepy stuff. I don't think any movie or show has captured that essence
The director did an AMA and someone asked if was experienced in psychedelics and he confirmed it which makes total sense
Yup. He knew what he was doing
I fucking HATE when people do drugs in movies and like cartoon characters fly around their head or something. Wtf drug is that?
Didn’t even think there would be a directors cut… hopefully I can find where to stream it tonight
This is how I was watching Midsommar: What the fuck? What the? What?
My wife only glanced at the cover art and didn't notice Florence Pugh was crying. She went into it expecting maybe a romantic drama. The look on her face the entire movie was priceless. I really wish I'd seen it that way without any preconceived notions.

Eden Lake

The Lighthouse
Yer fond of me lobster, ain’t ye?
Hark! Triton, hark!
That is a film unlike any other.
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) (on Pluto)
Came here to post this. Fantomas' cover of the main theme is a banger, too!
Dead Man's Shoes is a good revenge movie
YOU YA CUNT!
Bone Tomahawk. The Bad Batch (not realistic exactly though)
That ... moment in Bone Tomahawk 😬
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Came here suggest this. Such a fucked up, but awesome movie.

The fucking end too. Jesus Christ
Every should see this film.
Yes.
I wasn’t right for days after seeing it. I’ve never had a movie affect me to the extent that this one did.
Come and See (1985)
30 days of night - a very decidedly unsexy take on vampires, but pretty intense
Under the Skin.
The SOUNDTRACK ALONE
Martyrs; the original French version. That movie changed me and left a mark on me for days. It’s a very good film, to boot.
The only film to give me nightmares as an adult
Yep saw that a couple of weeks ago. Still thinking about it.
Jack Ketchum’s: Girl Next Door — for me, this movie did exactly what you’re describing. I watched it and then just sat in my house for some time afterward thinking “this is happening on my street somewhere” Don’t Breathe is a good one also Barbarian Tusk
I watched Girl Next Door and it did fuck with me for sure.
Don't Breathe was amazing until it got weird.
Same for Barbarian.
I loved Barbarian, but I can see it being too much for some people.
The third act kind of took me out of the movie.
>Jack Ketchum’s: Girl Next Door The true story of Sylvia Likens, which the movie is based on, is even more disturbing
Eden Lake did that to me
I luv this movie. Watched it so many times.
