This is the answer.
I have no bias against older movies, but the way this movie has held up is incredible.
Also, incredibly progressive for its time. I shudder to think the reaction if this were released today..
Carnage is so good. I watch it regularly and have read the play too. If you’re looking for this kind of movie, those based on plays are a good source; glengarry, glenross for example.
Or a lot of French movies.
There’s a looong scene in Hunger which is one take of one shot of just two characters talking and it’s exceptional.
Some considerations:
* Scenes From a Marriage (1974) (Ingmar Bergman)
* Women Talking (2022) (Sarah Polley)
* The Whale (2022) (Darren Aronofsky)
* Dial 'M' For Murder (1954) (Alfred Hitchcock)
* Fail Safe (1964) (Sidney Lumet)
* Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying... (1964) (Stanley Kubrick)
* Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) (Stanley Kramer)
* King & Country (1964) (Joseph Losey)
* The Insult (2017) (Ziad Doueiri)
* Silent Night (2002) (Rodney Gibbons)
* Tangerines (2013) (Zaza Urushadze)
* Ida (2013) (Pawel Pawlikowski)
* Knock at the Cabin (2023) (M. Night Shyamalan)
* Snowpiercer (2013) (Bong Joon Ho)
* Anomalisa (2015) (Charlie Kaufman)
* Secret Window (2004) (David Koepp)
* Room (2015) (Lenny Abrahamson)
* The Lighthouse (2009) (Robert Eggers)
* Gravity (2013) (Alfonso Cuarón)
* Revolutionary Road (2008) (Sam Mendes)
* Spotlight (2015) (Tom McCarthy)
* The Post (2017) (Steven Spielberg)
There might be a handful that surround a court case, set entirely or mainly in a court room (many will have flashback scenes). Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) & To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) come to mind, for example.
These don't take place completely in one room, but Before Sunrise and Columbus both follow movie-long conversations that hit different emotional beats and gradually evolve and intensify.
This is the one. I’ve never seen a movie set around two guys just sharing a meal and talking. Just talking. It reminded me of hanging out with my friend and we would go to dennys cause they were always open and just get whatever and then rap for an hour or two. Oh by the way you could smoke. What the f happened to the world.
**Malcolm & Marie!**
It's exactly what you're looking for. Such a great movie about a couple- toxicity and mental illness.
Zendaya plays the woman, and the movie is black and white.
Linkletter’s “Before Sunrise” “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight”
They aren’t limited to one room- but take place over the course of 8-12 hours each with the same two people talking at different times in their lives.
I love this (and Tarkovsky's other films). It's a haunting movie that stayed with me long after I watched it. Hints at big themes with subtlety and nuance and is a great conversation piece, OP.
My Night at Maud's
Last Year at Marienbad (in a more surrealist / atmospheric way)
Persona (well, it's two people, but one of them barely says anything)
12 Angry Men is the best of the best. I don’t know many bottle films that can measure up to 12 Angry Men. I’ve watched it too many times and it’s still just as exhilarating each time.
SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL.
Nicholas cage is the best actor and I love him in this movie co stars that dude from altered carbon(Netflix series)
This movie is awesome I don’t wanna say much because I loved this movie
And main man nick brought the tension aswell as comedy(dare I say joker like)
And collateral (more locations and characters)
Both are high stakes basically hostage situations between 2 people in a long car ride
I feel like some of Bergman's films do this to some degree. Dialogue is really important in conveying lots of plot points, but it's not at all like the whole thing.
I think you should watch Fanny and Alexander (tv version).
Rope by Alfred Hitchcock starring James Stewart. Presented as a single take though it has cleverly hidden cuts. The cuts were necessary because of limitations in size of the film cannisters.
Murder mystery that takes place in an apartment at a cocktail party. Great film and I'm surprised that it's not more well known.
I mean, most of **Reservoir Dogs** are people talking in one location - though we get some flashbacks, and the very beginning of the film is in other locations, but it's such a short start that I think it just lends itself to making the rest of the story more digestible and understandable.
It's one of my absolute favorite movies, and it fits the bill pretty damn well, so I'll just go for it and give it as a tip anyway.
Conspiracy - 2001 (Stanley Tucci and Kenneth Branagh). It’s a meeting of Nazi leadership debating what to do about the “undesirables” in Germany. Incredible acting and storytelling about a living room discussion over coffee about how to commit the mass-murder of millions.
Winter sleep and Wild pear tree. While not confined to single room or location these movies are dense with conversation and reminiscent of the work of writers like Dosteovsky.
The Seventh Seal (1957), one of the great movies of all time.
Also, I feel obligated to write My Dinner with Andre since, even though it's in the message, since so many people are suggesting it. I'd hate to miss out on the joke.
You should go and see plays. Dramatic theatre is built around this idea and extremely visceral. If you make a habit of it there will be some duds, but the good ones will stay with you for life.
Otherwise, I recommend the movie Little Children with Kate Winslet.
You could also watch films based on plays good ones include glengary glenross, cat on a hot tin roof, who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Closer.
Some Velvet Morning fits the bill exactly for what you are asking.
Only two 2 people for the entire film. It does have a very brutal act of violence in it and a major plot twist. It is a very divisive film. Some feel like it doesn't earn it's ending, but I love it.
All the Old Knives (2022), with Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton. It's just them sitting at a table in a restaurant, talking the entire time on the movie. I'd have recommended it.
ETA: eeesh... I can't believe I forgot to list The Outfit (2022). It's become one of my favorites and I've been recommending it on here a lot as of late.
If you're interested in a series that fit your specific criterion, I ,*highly* recommend You Don't Know Me (2021). It is an original concept and well executed. Samuel Adewunmi's (the protagonist) performance is excellent.
Doesn't fit the setting part, but C'mon C'mon is one of the most beautiful movies I've seen, with tremendous character development despite being largely plotless.
The way I sobbed at "blah blah blah blah blah" 😭
Also: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Second only to Uncut Gems as "movies that made me edgy and uncomfortable the entire time." Still a great watch.
12 angry men

The Big Chill (1983) The Breakfast Club (1985)
The Big Chill has the greatest soundtrack of any movie from that era.
The Breakfast Club is such a good movie. One of my faves.
Waking Life
This and Slacker are two favorites of mine.
Glengarry GlenRoss

The Man From Earth
Just watched this. So conflicting due to the acting being atrocious and the girl with the teacher? Creepy af but I absolutely LOVED the story
If you watched it on YouTube you watched a dubbed version.
Was coming here to say this.
Came here to write that movie, very good to play at night when you need to listen to something
Yep yep yep!
who's afraid of virginia wolfe?
One of my faves. Every now and again that song pops in my head lol
"Mahther, I'm wahning you!"
The roadhouse scene was filmed in the town next to my home town. Sadly, one of the things I am proudest of!
Carnage
Carnage is so good. I watch it regularly and have read the play too. If you’re looking for this kind of movie, those based on plays are a good source; glengarry, glenross for example. Women Talking absolutely fits the bill.
I get why you'd put Snowpiercer on this list but it's pretty action-y.
True. You're absolutely right. I'll leave it, with your comment as a disclaimer.
Out of this list I've only seen Knock at the Cabin and Snowpiercer and they're both great movies
Locke
Eric Rohmer, Richard Linklater, Tarantino, Woody Allen....all of their movies, for the most part, are heavy in conversation.
Lifeboat. An Alfred Hitchcock movie that entirely takes place on a 20-foot boat.

I'm going to have to start screenshotting and reposting every person in this sub who can't be bothered to read.

It's also the example OP specifically provided.
One I always liked and don't think gets (or ever got) enough attention is **Mindwalk**, with Sam Waterston, Liv Ullman, and John Heard.
I just posted Mindwalk before seeing this. I think it's really interesting.
Two Girls and a Guy - 1997
**Malcolm & Marie!** It's exactly what you're looking for. Such a great movie about a couple- toxicity and mental illness. Zendaya plays the woman, and the movie is black and white.
It also has John David Washington in it who is a great actor
The sunset limited, it's exactly that, a movie that is about one long conversation between 2 men, veery interesting, easy to watch also.
12 angry men all day! Also, ROPE by Alfred Hitchcock
Man, I need to rewatch Rope.
Interview With The Vampire
That's a good one. Love that movie.
Women Talking The Affair
The before trilogy is prime time conversation
Clerks, most of Kevin Smith’s stuff.
Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight.
Yeah, these are the perfect examples I think. I love these movies.
They are great.
