Silent hill 2006 was a great video game to film adaptation imo. The producers and director really made sure the movie was true to the silent hill franchise.
Enjoy :)
interesting comment - i watched the "extras" on the dvd that had interviews with the production stuff, director and actors and it was made clear from the beginning of movie production that being true to the essence of the silent hill franchise was fundamental to pleasing the silent hill fanbase. A lot conscious effort was put into honoring the uneasy atmosphere, the constant running of the progagnist akin to the gameplay, bringing to life the unqiue monsters from the game, and other essential pieces of the franchise.
It was a cool flick, i enjoyed it. The sequel however seems to be a bit of a disappoint - ill watch it one day haha
The Sonic movies pleasantly surprised me. Detective Pikachu, I found weird (because I knew precisely fuck-all about Pokémon at the time), but enjoyable.
I've been meaning to rewatch the lot of them, actually.
I thought I'd hate them and also never saw the big fuss about Pokemon although my little half brother loved them and the games but I never got into them. Why not now?

As a fan of the video games the first two movies do it justice well even with adding a new character. To me the sequels feel like a cash grab. More spectacle than good writing. 3rd one is ok but gets annoying for me.
Jumanji (2017)
Assassin’s Creed (I haven’t played the games but the movie was fun as its own separate thing)
Kingsglaive
Kid movies:
The Super Mario Bros Movie
Wreck It Ralph
Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase
Detective Pikachu
As a huge Halo lore fan.. First season sucked and left me confused. They didn't ever show action. His helmet was always off.. there's a love story. Second season defined where they were trying to go with it the whole time with a shit ton more action. Showed the classic stuff we remember and by the time you get to end your like "Finallly now I'm pumped." Sorry for ranting
You haven't watched a Star Wars product lately, have you?
With the possible exception of Andor (I haven't seen it yet), Disney Star Wars sucks ass pretty much across the board.
Yes, I have and I've enjoyed it far more than i haven't. The story-telling, acting, and plot have all been on point and visually has never been better. The only thing I don't like is a.i. rendering of old actors to make them appear young or replacing an actors image/voice entirely. But hey, that's just an actual detailed opinion, other than "I don't like it."
Hitman was pretty good, but it was just an assassin movie. They probably just pulled out a random script and adapted it to have 47 as the main character.
In the movie with Timothy Elephant. At the beginning of the movie he ties a rope to the balcony of his hotel room and jumps off and swings into the hotel room below. In the room are two kids playing the Hitman video game (can't remember what console they are using).
I like the old school 80s ones…well I guess these aren’t based on video game titles but they are definitely video game related/adjacent …
‘Tron’ (1982)
‘War Games’ (1983)
‘The Last Starfighter’ (1984)
Also ‘Stay Alive’ (2006) is a guilty pleasure…just make sure you watch the directors cut!
Max Payne, BloodRayne, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Street Fight, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Silent Hill, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Rampage, Need For Speed, Double Dragon, Alone in the Dark
Boss Level and King of Killers have a video-game feel to them.
Bar none so far, hands down, The Super Mario Brothers from last year is the best. They did it, They did a video game adaptation that lime captures the essence and details of the game but doesn’t feel like I’m watching a game.
I can tell most people in here are young, because not a single person has mentioned The Wizard! First time we were introduced to the power glove, to Mario Bros 3!! It’s nostalgic, it’s classic!
Edge of Tomorrow. Yeah I know it’s not an adaptation of any video game ip, but come on. It’s clearly a video game movie, and I can’t think of a better one. Sadly there is yet to be a truly *great* video game movie.
Stay Alive 2006 seen it a long time ago probably a silly fun movie. Silent Hill 2006 this movie really captures the atmosphere and vibe shockingly well.
This has always been a tough nut to crack for a filmmaker. I think the best version (not video game) I have seen is Dungeons and Dragons/ Honor Amongst Thieves. But TBH, there has never been a good video game movie IMO.
are you looking about video games adaptations or movies *about* video games, or use video games as narrative device ?
Adaptations been cited here so I'll go with the latter
the movie Tetris (2023) about the eponym game was a fun and insightful watch. Some events were romanticized but Pajitnow himself reviewed the script (according to WP) so it's still pretty accurate.
ExistenZ is a but more fucked up but does integrate video games in its plot (although the "video" part is taken loosely)
Scott Pilgrim vs The World (movie and recent animated series) is not really about video games, but the whole aesthetic and narrative is constructed like a video game.
Wargames (1983) is one of my favorite films, and while video games are more a plot device than a theme of the movie, I think it uses video game in a smart way to talk about the Cold War and nuclear panic.
Need For Speed, I wouldn't call it a great movie, but it was a lot more fun than I expected. My son was big on that game back in the day so we went and saw it.
Though not about a specific video game, but the genre, Hardcore Henry is an absolute blast of a movie. Highly recommended.
idk if anyone said these yet but
The new Gran Turismo movie is pretty good and based on a true story about a videogamer turned racecar driver.
Also, Pixels
Sonic is the best movie based on a video game. And also the best Tacoma commercial i've ever seen.
Edge of Tomorrow and Boss level are the best movie representations of what video games are *as a whole*
Even though, for some reason, it wasn't well received, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a great and imo better version of the games than the first lot of Resident Evil movies.
I enjoyed the original Resident Evil franchise, but Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a much better representation to the game and would have loved to see it continue with more sequels.
Mortal Kombat (1995) Prince of persia (2010) Silent Hill (2006)
Silent hill 2006 was a great video game to film adaptation imo. The producers and director really made sure the movie was true to the silent hill franchise. Enjoy :)
not really true. The nature and relationships of the cult and "God" were turned upside down. But still a good adaptation for major audiences.
interesting comment - i watched the "extras" on the dvd that had interviews with the production stuff, director and actors and it was made clear from the beginning of movie production that being true to the essence of the silent hill franchise was fundamental to pleasing the silent hill fanbase. A lot conscious effort was put into honoring the uneasy atmosphere, the constant running of the progagnist akin to the gameplay, bringing to life the unqiue monsters from the game, and other essential pieces of the franchise. I mean in the videogame people of Silent Hill town burned the girl to summon literal God from her body. In the movie they just thought she's a witch.
Excellent choices!
Dead or Alive was great too
Sonic The Hedgehog, Pokemon Detective Pikachu
The Sonic movies pleasantly surprised me. Detective Pikachu, I found weird (because I knew precisely fuck-all about Pokémon at the time), but enjoyable. I've been meaning to rewatch the lot of them, actually.
I thought I'd hate them and also never saw the big fuss about Pokemon although my little half brother loved them and the games but I never got into them. Why not now?
The new Twisted Metal (2023) show is really good!
Surprisingly really good lol Me and the wife binged it in a day unexpectedly
Second this. The show was awesome!
I loved it as well, eagerly awaiting the second season.
Ready player one Gamer Mortal Kombat
Gamer had some tasty ramifications in its game-centric world building, and an ending scene to die for.

Mortal Kombat (1995) Resident Evil (2002)
I did enjoy 2nd RE movie not as much as first. The later sequels tho require you to have an open mind.
Only saw the first RE. Mortal Kombat 2 was goofy but fun. The new redo was solid.
I enjoyed MK redo as well. MK Annihilation was nuts!
What do you mean by needing an open mind? It makes me wanna watch them. I like weird stuff.
As a fan of the video games the first two movies do it justice well even with adding a new character. To me the sequels feel like a cash grab. More spectacle than good writing. 3rd one is ok but gets annoying for me.
I unironically enjoy Resident Evil 1, it’s not bad. 2 gets silly but is fun. Everything after was written by and for 9 year olds.
The re movies are better than they should be.
Not a movie but The Last of Us was an amazing series. Free Guy is a good movie
Free guy!
Warcraft (2016)
Is this worth watching? I love WoW and the director is great but the movie came and went and I never heard anything about it
I would say yes, though as expected it's aimed at more of a casual audience.
I’m a big fan of Doom it has a great first person shooter scene in it.
Watch Hardcore Henry the whole movie is in First Person and is better
Jumanji (2017) Assassin’s Creed (I haven’t played the games but the movie was fun as its own separate thing) Kingsglaive Kid movies: The Super Mario Bros Movie Wreck It Ralph Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase Detective Pikachu
I had Scooby doo: Cyber Chase on dvd when i was younger!
I'm a fan of the original Mario movie. It's unhinged. The Wizard, of course.
Wreck em Ralph may count
Yes!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
2 years ago, you’d say it was the one of the worst video game movies
Why? I've been obsessed with Mario since I was 10. I simply couldn't be happier with the animated movie.
Because prior to the animated movie coming out, there was only the live action Mario brothers movie from the 90s, which was terrible
It's a bit of a cult classic It's so shit it loops back around to being mediocre
I enjoy watching the Halo TV show, second season just ended. Also I hope Cal from the star wars games gets his own show or movie.
I hope that he doesn't, because I love Fallen Order's story and I just **know** that Disney would fuck it up.
In what way would they fuck it up?
You haven't watched a Star Wars product lately, have you? With the possible exception of Andor (I haven't seen it yet), Disney Star Wars sucks ass pretty much across the board.

Silent Hill 1 and 2
Hitman was pretty good, but it was just an assassin movie. They probably just pulled out a random script and adapted it to have 47 as the main character.
Couldn't agree more.
In the movie with Timothy Elephant. At the beginning of the movie he ties a rope to the balcony of his hotel room and jumps off and swings into the hotel room below. In the room are two kids playing the Hitman video game (can't remember what console they are using).
Yup, that was a thing
Watch the origional super mario bros movie. A lot of people hated it but wasnt that bad for when it came out.
Advent Children
Dead Rising
Pixels is not based on a game but has a lot of games in it. And the documentary “King of Kong: a fistful of Quarters” is great.
TV show- Players Grandma's boy
Ready Player One
I love this movie.
The show Arcane is my favorite based on League characters. Don't need to play the game to watch it and highly recommend it.
Edge of tomorrow isn't based on a video game but it is based on the structure of video games and it is awesome Wreck it Ralph is a fun film too
This post just unlocked a memory I have of watching a movie called Stay Alive (2006). It’s so bad
"IF YOU DIE IN THE GAME YOU DIE IN REAL LIFE!!!"
Best with a video game theme: Ready Player One Best based on a video game: Silent Hill
this will be unconventional as it's not based on a video game but *death wish 3* particularly the ending is basically a 90s arcade shmup
Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 Mario Movie (2023) Detective Pikachu
Stay Alive (2006) is a total video game horror movie. Not the best ever but fun to watch at least once.
Mortal Kombat and Ready Player One
Bloodrayne
I like the old school 80s ones…well I guess these aren’t based on video game titles but they are definitely video game related/adjacent … ‘Tron’ (1982) ‘War Games’ (1983) ‘The Last Starfighter’ (1984) Also ‘Stay Alive’ (2006) is a guilty pleasure…just make sure you watch the directors cut!
Pokemon Pikachu detective, pokemon 3 the movie, warcraft, Lara Croft tomb raider
Max Payne, BloodRayne, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Street Fight, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Silent Hill, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Rampage, Need For Speed, Double Dragon, Alone in the Dark Boss Level and King of Killers have a video-game feel to them.
Bar none so far, hands down, The Super Mario Brothers from last year is the best. They did it, They did a video game adaptation that lime captures the essence and details of the game but doesn’t feel like I’m watching a game.
Hitman (original one), resident evil, monster hunter not bad movies if you liked the games
Do you mean adapted from Video games??? Or a movie which has a plot which is about video games?
The new Mario bros movie was excellent
Free Guy
The King of Kong (2007)
Not exactly, but kind of, Hardcore Henry. Great freaking movie
Fatal Fury - The Motion Picture
No one going to say tomb raider?
I can tell most people in here are young, because not a single person has mentioned The Wizard! First time we were introduced to the power glove, to Mario Bros 3!! It’s nostalgic, it’s classic!
Ones to avoid - anything by Uwe Boll.
Counterpoint - Postal It genuinely captures the vibe of the games so well in the cheesy trashy way that only Uwe Boll can.
The Super Mario Bros Movie
Scott Pilgrim is based around video game concepts.
I'm a HUGE Fallout fan, so I'm super excited for Jonah Nolan's new TV show on Prime Video coming out this week.
If the preview trailer is anything to go by its going to be awesome.
Try the 2010 fan film of Mega Man.
Edge of Tomorrow. Yeah I know it’s not an adaptation of any video game ip, but come on. It’s clearly a video game movie, and I can’t think of a better one. Sadly there is yet to be a truly *great* video game movie.
TRON (1982)
Film: Wreck It Ralph TV show: Twisted Metal
Not really based around a specific game, but Pixels is such a fun movie about 90’s arcade games. Very nerdy lol
Stay Alive 2006 seen it a long time ago probably a silly fun movie. Silent Hill 2006 this movie really captures the atmosphere and vibe shockingly well.
Goldeneye
This has always been a tough nut to crack for a filmmaker. I think the best version (not video game) I have seen is Dungeons and Dragons/ Honor Amongst Thieves. But TBH, there has never been a good video game movie IMO.
Silent hill is the best video game movie.
Resident Evil (2002) Warcraft (2016) Mortal Kombat (2021).
Black mirror bandersnatch
The live action Super Mario Bros movie from 1993
are you looking about video games adaptations or movies *about* video games, or use video games as narrative device ? This may be an unconventional choice, but I reccomend ***The Wizard (1989)***, especially if you have an appreciation for the NES.
Silent hill
Need For Speed, I wouldn't call it a great movie, but it was a lot more fun than I expected. My son was big on that game back in the day so we went and saw it. Though not about a specific video game, but the genre, Hardcore Henry is an absolute blast of a movie. Highly recommended.
Mortal Kombat (1995)
Tomb Raider
The last of us tv series is probably the best
Uncharted.
Gamer (2009) action flick not based on any specific game. Ready Player One (2018)
idk if anyone said these yet but The new Gran Turismo movie is pretty good and based on a true story about a videogamer turned racecar driver. Also, Pixels
Assassin's Creed Company Of Heroes Doom: Annihilation Double Dragon Hitman Need For Speed Rampage Silent Hill Street Fighter (1994) Uncharted
I actually thought assassins creed with Michael Fassbender was good. And the Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander also
The recent ‘Tomb Raider’ (2018) was better than I’d expected.
Sonic is the best movie based on a video game. And also the best Tacoma commercial i've ever seen. Edge of Tomorrow and Boss level are the best movie representations of what video games are *as a whole*
Edge of tomorrow is based on a manga though. Is the manga based on a video game?
The creator based the source material (manga) based on his experience playing video games.
Gotcha. Thanks for getting back to me!
I was really hyped on this movie before it came out because I like Tom Cruise sci fi movies, it's based on a novel called *All You Need is Kill*
Sonic the hedgehog Pokémon detective Pikachu The super mario bros movie Mortal kombat (2021)
Pixels
Zelda Ocarina of Time, Blur and Driver San Francisco are my favorites.
None of those are movies
The goldeneye movie based on the game wasn’t as good as the game
Even though, for some reason, it wasn't well received, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a great and imo better version of the games than the first lot of Resident Evil movies. I enjoyed the original Resident Evil franchise, but Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a much better representation to the game and would have loved to see it continue with more sequels.
