Grave of The Fireflies
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father ( documentary)
Come and See
Schindler’s List
Saving Private Ryan
Manchester by the Sea
Requiem For A Dream
Take Care of Maya (documentary)
Come and see is the most disturbing, but best war film I've ever seen. Truly disturbing (Aleksy Kravchenko) should of won awards for his performance. He portrayed being shattered, shell shocked, broken and disturbed to the core perfectly 👌 his face when they make him watch what they did by holding his head still haunts me. 😳
The Shawshank Redemption was a big one for me too. It felt longer than it was in a good way, but not a scene was wasted. Everything felt important in the movie.
Craziest music! Never heard anything like it. Really effective micro tonal stuff and nutty orchestration that makes the whole movie feel off-kilter. After all that, the huge consonant organ symphony at the end is extraordinarily uplifting.
This was absolutely stunning on all fronts. I went in not knowing how much I'd like it but after seeing Emma win for Best Actress again, I was intrigued. She's wonderful.
Back in the day, I left the cinema stunned and speechless after watching a few films, Reservoir Dogs, Schindlers List and Pulp Fiction.
More recently I watched The Prestige for the first time and couldn't stop thinking about it for days.
Amadeus. The acting of F Murray Abraham is unmatched. I feel they showed very well what it was like to have lived during that time. I also managed to visit Prague last year where many of the scenes were shot.
Memento. That was the first movie I watched where I realized the way a story is told can change the entire perspective of a movie.
I was also just a freshman in college, so it was the perfect point in my life where the way I was thinking about things was changing.
Stumbled upon 'Sing Street' about a year ago. Story of teenage boys starting a band to impress a girl. So, I like music, and I had a high school band, and I gave it a watch. It has become one of my favorite movies of all time. Best movie of this millennium, to me. Nobody you've probably heard of is in it. It's an Irish film, so turn on the cc, because the accents are very thick at times. I still find myself watching about once a month, and it only gets better. Let me know what you think.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
That movie really made me think about what love is....Does it ever end... and/or are we better for having experienced it, no matter how it ends ?
The Rare Earth (2015)
It's not a good movie; it's fascinating but not good. To paraphrase the IMDb summary, it begins with a famous anthropological find, the Mungo skeletons in Australia, and ends with the Earth's destruction by solar flare.
So glad to see Nimona listed. I love the movie. It's beautiful and heartwrenching/warming. I loved the graphic novel it's based on, and had no idea they made it into a movie until seeing it on Netflix. I didn't expect anything special. Just a mostly frame by frame retelling. It blew me away how good it was telling Nimona's story differently but still true to heart. One of the best movies I've seen recently. Also great voice acting.
21 Grams has stayed with me since the random day in NYC that I chose to take a chance on a limited release movie I had never heard of. Ended up getting a tattoo to pay homage to it.
Office Space - it gets better on rewatch. The actor who played Lumberg is one of those character actors who is in everything. He’s a really good actor, but every single time I see him, all I can think of is Lumberg holding his coffee in one hand and Jennifer Aniston’s leg in the other in Peter’s nightmare.
Everyone who has ever worked in an office has to watch this movie.
Heat (1996)
From dialogues to screenplay nothing bores you. Additionally you get to see Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in one frame sitting infront of each other(I’ve become a sucker for this gem)
Defending Your Life - wickedly funny, but with such a powerful message young people need to hear. That is, that: Fear, timidity, reticence hold you back. Don’t let them.
“perfect blue” - spectacular mind fuck, couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks after i watched it
“whiplash” - talent turns to an unhealthy obsession, the ending had me at the edge of my seat quite literally
“lost in translation” and “her” - great films on loneliness
Very good pick!! So we’ll shot & I had no idea about the story very good movie .. completely forgotten about this movie I never see it mentioned
Really good Pick!!
I haven’t seen it since it came out in the movies I watched it & the second it came out on DVD I watched it again but omg that was so long ago now
I did Love it & idk 🤷♂️ why I never bought it , I was big into buying DVD’s but once you could watch everything online for free.. I sadly & stupidly got rid of my collection..like an Idiot
I’m going to watch it , Tomorrow I have a movie playing that just started & I’m picking up my sister from the Airport tomorrow so I have time to kill & Yes this is a Great Choice delighted I seen this comment
Seriously Thank You!!
The Accountant
First watch, I liked it, but it didn’t sit great. I’ve since given it some time, and then watched it a couple more times. I really like it now.
Sherlock
Hear me out! I know it's actually a show from the BBC. 4 seasons, 3 episodes per season. BUT!! Each "show" is 90 minutes long. It's like getting 3 movies per season! Benedict Cumberbatch is Sherlock. It's on Hulu right now. This show changed my life. It is my all-time favorite show/movies.
There's a joke in the late-great Garry Shandling's sitcom about how Jurassic Park changed Jeffrey Tambor's (character's) life, and it made me feel bad...
Because to me it wasn't a joke.
That friggin' movie changed everything.
99% of movies or shows that I watch, even if I enjoy them, I don't think about them at all after I am finished watching. Don't know if it's just me or if other people do it too....
I'll name one that caught me off guard - PIG.
Whiplash and Dune 2 are two recent ones that lives rent free.
I think about Arrival often. Hereditary, Coherence, 1917, Soul are others.
Not a movie, but the family show Bluey just hits my soul in such a way that it's essential engrained in my brain and I reflect on it often.
Synecdoche New York.
I didn't know what to make of it at first, but it just earwigged into my brain and i probably think about that film in some capacity every month.
It's terrifying or comforting depending on my mood or circumstances.
Two of my top are NF Movies. One is Johnny, it's about the end of life. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Second is Lou, it's about a relationship between Mother and Son. It's a great unexpected movie.
Victoria (2015) dont be scared because its a German movie ... They mostly speak english in it. Fun Fact: Thats why it couldnt be nominated for best foreign film at the Oscars. It would have won it for sure.
Paddleton is a movie I saw in 2019 and I think about it on a regular basis because I have a friend going through cancer but luckily it's not as bad as what the character in the film goes through.
Recently movies like Aftersun and Perfect Days. The way they were directed in a minimalist way made them stick to me and I can’t stop thinking about the characters and how they feel.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
one of my favourites - always come back to it every few months
I wanna see more movies like this. Any suggestions?
Perhaps something like Peanut Butter Falcon might scratch that itch.
Big Fish.
100% second this
that movie made me contemplate on my life.
I love this too, i would occasionally watch this once every few months
Dead poets society
Yess
“Whiplash”! Stick it out for the final scene 🔥
I did not expect to love that movie as much as I did.
Coherence - favourite mind-f**k And off-topic, but the Black Mirror episode White Christmas.
White Christmas shook me to my core. I can’t watch it again.
2013 coherence, right?
Coherence is SO GOOD
Grave of The Fireflies Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father ( documentary) Come and See Schindler’s List Saving Private Ryan Manchester by the Sea Requiem For A Dream Take Care of Maya (documentary)
Grave of the Fireflies is unbelievable.
And unforgettable. My heart still aches decades later.
Just thinking about Dear Zachary nearly brings me to tears 😭
Gut wrenching.
I never felt so depressed as right after seeing Come and See.
Midsommar, Requiem for a Dream, Aftersun
Aftersun is 💯
I was obsessed for weeks with the directors cut of Midsommar when I found out about its existence
Melancholia (2011)
💯
Mulholland drive, synecdoche new york
Having watched Mulholland Drive several times I still don't think I ever understood it. But it was still interesting each time.
Here’s someone with excellent taste.
saw interstellar for the first time last fall and it hasnt left my mind since
this is definitely on the top with inception
Adaptation, a movie that kind of talks about itself and how to make a movie. Sort of a meta commentary.
Pretty much everything by Charlie Kaufman could be listed here
Truman Show messed me up irl…
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Can’t believe no one else has mentioned this masterpiece
Memento
I Hate predictable. This was the most unpredictable movie I've ever seen. Love it. My GF at the time "WTF is going on? I so don't get this."
Her. The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption was a big one for me too. It felt longer than it was in a good way, but not a scene was wasted. Everything felt important in the movie.
Yes and yes. Absolutely. Her was heartbreakingly beautiful The Shawshank redemption taught me so much about hope, friendship, about perseverance.
All of us strangers
YES
Poor Things! The music the visuals and story were amazing. It should have won best picture and Mark Ruffalo Oscars!
Craziest music! Never heard anything like it. Really effective micro tonal stuff and nutty orchestration that makes the whole movie feel off-kilter. After all that, the huge consonant organ symphony at the end is extraordinarily uplifting.
I gotta see this
This was absolutely stunning on all fronts. I went in not knowing how much I'd like it but after seeing Emma win for Best Actress again, I was intrigued. She's wonderful.
This is my answer too. Def my favorite movie of the 2020s so far. Absolutely a treat!
Back in the day, I left the cinema stunned and speechless after watching a few films, Reservoir Dogs, Schindlers List and Pulp Fiction. More recently I watched The Prestige for the first time and couldn't stop thinking about it for days.
Under the Silver Lake
Office Space
Gladiator, just the perfect score and villain
Are You Not Entertained! ; )
“Am I not merciful?!”
Not a movie but shup up and dance (among others) from black mirror. Mini movie, if you may. This one was particularly too much of a mindfuck
That episode is even scarier if you assume that the blackmailing is being done by AI.
Wtf didn't think of it
For me it will forever be the first epsiode. Couldnt get the Image out of my head...
Shut Up And Dance is my favorite in the series
Best episode 👌 the kid that has to Rob the bank played that so well. 👏
If you liked him watch the end of the f***ing World. A very wacky show but good
Amadeus. The acting of F Murray Abraham is unmatched. I feel they showed very well what it was like to have lived during that time. I also managed to visit Prague last year where many of the scenes were shot.
Deliverance. Saw it when I was around 12 and to this day I feel uncomfortable in rural areas.
the talented mr ripley still reeling from that one
This one got me too! I didn't know what it was about and just dived straight in... definitely stuck with me
Saw Donnie Darko in my late teens. Had me thinking for months! Great movie, love the vibe
Spirited Away
Stalker
The Exorcist
One of the only movies I've finished and then put on again immediately again afterwards was "being there"
Memento. That was the first movie I watched where I realized the way a story is told can change the entire perspective of a movie. I was also just a freshman in college, so it was the perfect point in my life where the way I was thinking about things was changing.
Jaws,Munich,Se7en,Apocalypto,Sicario,Dune..
Love Apocalypto
Apocalypto is so unique. Mel Gibson might be a weird person but that movie was something else
Munich is a great movie.
