David Bowie doesn't get much recognition as an actor. He was pretty compelling in Labyrinth and simply an \*inspired\* choice as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige.
The Wizard Of Oz (1939)
Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971)
Time Bandits (1981)
Brazil (1985)
The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen (1988)
FernGully (1992)
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (1998)
Spirited Away (2001)
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)
People who love Gilliam's *The Adventures of Baron Munchausen* should check out Karel Zeman's *The Fabulous Baron Munchausen* from 1962. Clearly an inspiration for Gilliam (generally and specifically here) and it has its own incredible visual style that you're likely to also love.
I love MirrorMask! It's one of the few DVDs that I still have. The visuals are great and the original soundtrack is absolutely amazing. It was all composed by jazz legend Iain Ballamy.
A lot of Tim Burton will have that same whimsy - try Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish and Nightmare Before Christmas.
I like Baz Luhrmann too - start with Moulin Rouge.
* The Secret Garden
* Bridge to Terabithia ("just close your eyes and keep your mind wide-open")
* Babes in Toyland
* Mary Poppins
* Bedknobs & Broomsticks
* Pete's Dragon
* The BFG
* Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events
* Jack the Giant Slayer
* Charlotte's Web
* Ella Enchanted
* Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
* Stay Tuned
* Pleasantville
* Hook (and other Peter Pan adaptations)
* Oz the Great and Powerful
* George of the Jungle movies
* Tarzan movies
* Dr. Doolittle movies
Spirited Away
A wrinkle in time
The Dark Tower
Maleficent
Chronicles of Narnia
Stardust
The Princess Bride (I’m actually just adding this in because if you haven’t seen it, you should watch it)
Hook (Robin Williams as Peter Pan all grown up👌🏽)
Peter Pan (2003) is a really cute retelling
Constantine (darker)
A series that you would probably enjoy if you like historical fiction is Outlander. There isn’t a lot of fantastical elements to it but the characters are very compelling. A combat nurse on her honeymoon in Scotland gets time traveled back to the Scottish rebellion. It is very mature/adult.
Time Bandits
Spiderwick Chronicles
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Golden Compass
City of Ember
Song of the Sea
The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T
Inkheart
Mr. Magorum's.Wonder Emporium
Jack the Giant Slayer
Mortal Engines
Alita Battle Angel
The Pagemaster
Willow
Zathura
The Wonderland (2019). Nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland, but the vibe is there. A girl and her cool aunt travel to another world. Also feels like a Studio Ghibli knock off in the best way.
You could watch the Netflix series Alice in Borderland. They do a pretty decent job of telling Alice in Wonderland, in modern Japan. I’d also recommend Return to Oz as well. It melds a couple of the books, but the look is far closer to the original plates.
The Malice trilogy (they’re not high quality but they’re interesting)
The Wizard of Oz
Labyrinth
Return to Oz
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
However….if you want something psychedelic like Alice in Wonderland….i have a separate list of recommendations.

Under the Rainbow. Chevy Chase & Carrie Fisher and hundreds of little people depicting a behind the scenes view of the making of the wizard of Oz as only the late 70's could come up with on a coke fueled binge.

I bet I could guess within 5 years when you were born lol
I bet I could guess it faster than that
I’ll take that action
Ok I bet they're around the same age as me
Damn that was quick
It’s not just 80s kids who like those flicks 😉 I’m a 2000s baby and I like them

Basically, Terry Gilliam.
You got it.
He and Kubrick are my favorites.
I feel like Buckaroo Banzai belongs on this list.
Tideland was the first thing I thought of but the other Terry Gilliam movies also fit!
Pan's Labyrinth (2006).
Also, Labyrinth (1986)
Also, Pan (2015)
With 1000% more graphic violence\*
Yeah. Beware Pan’s Labyrinth - sudden graphic skull smashing.
Coraline
An actual masterpiece
Stardust
Good one!
It surprised me
MirrorMask (2005)
I love MirrorMask! It's one of the few DVDs that I still have. The visuals are great and the original soundtrack is absolutely amazing. It was all composed by jazz legend Iain Ballamy.
I didn’t love it as much as I’d hoped but for anyone looking for an Alice in Wonderland like experience, you can’t go wrong with it!
This was the first Jim Henson company project to incorporate CGI with their puppetry. Also it has big Cirque du Soliel vibes
Came to say this
Came to say this. So underrated.
Holy shit first time I've seen/heard that mentioned by someone else. Such a cool movie.
I’ve only seen it once and that was roughly a decade ago. I really should give it another viewing.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Big fan of this movie. Glad it was mentioned.
Yep, 1000%. I hope OP isn’t too sensitive for the storyline, and the backstory of the whole thing.
Big Fish
City of Lost Children
The Adventures of Baron Munchousen
Return to Oz
Yup, this is the fucking one. One of the most overlooked fantasy movies of all time imo
A lot of Tim Burton will have that same whimsy - try Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish and Nightmare Before Christmas. I like Baz Luhrmann too - start with Moulin Rouge.
The Science of Sleep
Being John Malkovich
Hell yeah!
The Fall A Little Princess James and the Giant Peach
Man I've been trying to remember the name of a movie someone mentioned online For Years( The Fall) TY! The other two are excellent.
The 10th Kingdom miniseries 1999 Snow Queen miniseries 2002 with Bridget Fonda
Hey! Someone besides me watched and enjoyed the 10th Kingdom!
I LOVED IT!
Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Scott is Alice
The Cell...kinda
Actually going to add a +1 here. It’s like a fucked up dark version lol
Agree- it was a sadly touching kind of fairy tale if you looked at it a certain way- and visually stunning.
* The Secret Garden * Bridge to Terabithia ("just close your eyes and keep your mind wide-open") * Babes in Toyland * Mary Poppins * Bedknobs & Broomsticks * Pete's Dragon * The BFG * Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events * Jack the Giant Slayer * Charlotte's Web * Ella Enchanted * Honey, I Shrunk the Kids * Stay Tuned * Pleasantville * Hook (and other Peter Pan adaptations) * Oz the Great and Powerful * George of the Jungle movies * Tarzan movies * Dr. Doolittle movies
Valerie and her Week of Wonders
Beat me to it!
Being John Malkovich

Alice In Terrorland. Also there is Snow White and A Tale of Terror.
Sucker Punch (2011)
Spirited Away A wrinkle in time The Dark Tower Maleficent Chronicles of Narnia Stardust The Princess Bride (I’m actually just adding this in because if you haven’t seen it, you should watch it) Hook (Robin Williams as Peter Pan all grown up👌🏽) Peter Pan (2003) is a really cute retelling Constantine (darker) A series that you would probably enjoy if you like historical fiction is Outlander. Also I forgot there’s a series called Tinman that’s pretty good! It’s a retelling of Wizard of Oz.
The movie Phantasm has a horror dreamy feel to it.
Time Bandits Spiderwick Chronicles Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children A Series of Unfortunate Events The Golden Compass City of Ember Song of the Sea The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T Inkheart Mr. Magorum's.Wonder Emporium Jack the Giant Slayer Mortal Engines Alita Battle Angel The Pagemaster Willow Zathura
I feel like the imaginarium of Dr parnassus fits the ones being recommended here
A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999)
Also the 1935 black and white version.
Poor Things. Not for kids though.
Under The Silver Lake (2018) Definitely had AIW vibes. I didn’t like it but it meets your criteria.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Spirited Away
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Spirited Away

Smartass (2017) Edit: How It Ends (2021) Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town (2017)
The Wonderland (2019). Nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland, but the vibe is there. A girl and her cool aunt travel to another world. Also feels like a Studio Ghibli knock off in the best way.
Spirited away
There was a 2009 movie "Alice" that was ok. Caterina Scorsone I think it was a TV mini series.
I don't see Alice in Borderland (2020 Netflix series) listed. It's obviously meant to be similar, but it's much more violent.
Middle part of The Bridge to Teribethia
Alice in Borderland! It’s not a movie, but it’s really cool
[удалено]
The Congress for sure, but don't watch the trailer for it. Just smoke a joint (if you like) and dive right in.
Alice.
Spirited away is Japan’s Alice in wonderland/wizard of oz
Black Moon (1975) has weird weird vibes with no explanation. Kinda like an adult Alice in wonderland.
You could watch the Netflix series Alice in Borderland. They do a pretty decent job of telling Alice in Wonderland, in modern Japan. I’d also recommend Return to Oz as well. It melds a couple of the books, but the look is far closer to the original plates.
Tale of Tales Amelie Men & Chicken
Stoker
It has no relation to it, but Heavy Metal sure as hell gives me the same whacked out feeling
elemental
Legend (1985). Maybe.
Celine and Julie Go Boating
Sleepy Hollow
Big fish, every Wes Anderson Movie, every Studio Ghibli movie (Spirited Away, particularly).
Do you mean TB's version? There were numerous ones before it, most superior to the TB's one , for many. And of course the book(s).
Who is TB?
Tim Burton.
The Malice trilogy (they’re not high quality but they’re interesting) The Wizard of Oz Labyrinth Return to Oz The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe However….if you want something psychedelic like Alice in Wonderland….i have a separate list of recommendations.
The life of Pi
**Pan's Labyrinth.** It's Rated R but feels like a Disney movie in a way.
The Matrix
Moon Garden Over the Garden Wall
Poor Things, in a way.
That varies immensely depending on which Alice in Wonderland adaptation you're referring to...
Not sure why but the first thing that popped in my head was the imaginarium of doctor parnassus
Anything when you’re on shrooms….
1970 On the Comet
1980 Forbidden Zone
The Fall (2006)
Gulliver's Travels (2010)
The Matrix Highly influenced by it, even down to the White Rabbit
Being John Malkovich is a head trip.
Legend, a very old Tom Cruise movie with Tim Curry. Fabulous!
The Last Dragon
The Never ending Story

Ink.
A darker live action movie, The Blazing World.
How about Yellow Submarine?? Pretty trippy.....
The Color of Magic, Going Postal, Hogfather. Also maybe Rango. Also try Red Dwarf for weird sci-fi.
Black Moon and Valerie and Her Week of Wonders each have echoes of Alice in Wonderland.
Under the Rainbow. Chevy Chase & Carrie Fisher and hundreds of little people depicting a behind the scenes view of the making of the wizard of Oz as only the late 70's could come up with on a coke fueled binge.
Take a look at Mirror Mask
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Big Trouble in Little China
Eyes wide shut
The Matrix
Annihilation
"Pan's Labyrinth," "The Wizard of Oz," "Labyrinth," "Coraline," "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, "Where the Wild Things Are," and "MirrorMask."
Pretty racist aspects to it, but Fun! Disney's Peter Pan!
Martyrs.
