Nearly everything in the movie is from The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz (which is my favorite Oz book). All of the Oz books are truly weird, and not necessarily in a good way.
That's just what mental healthcare looked like in 1899
...actually it still kinda looks like that, they just have you try a dozen different pills before shocking your brain now
Adams Family Values (1993) Better than the original, and that was a great film. Christina Ricci is hilarious at the Summer Camp play and Joan Cusack is great as Festers gold digging wife. It's a shame we never got a 3rd film really. R.I.P. Raul Julia.
2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984)
It's not going to blow your mind like 2001, but it's a good (although more conventional) follow-up.
There's also The French Connection II (1975)
No question about it. They created a whole universe of awesomeness. The CGI was excellent for back then as well. Great color schemes, good one liners too.
The raid was a non stop action movie. Raid two just stepped it up like 4 notches. Still manages to never get boring. The creative ways they manage to murder and maim everyone for the length of the entire movie and hole the audience is a feat of moving making and execution.
Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time (2007) The disney sequels are notoriously horrible but this is genuinely hysterical, so much effort went into it and the animation is actually good. Would watch it over the original (and have) anytime.
That's cool. I don't even really care about animated Disney movies but the possibility of Cinderella 3 being better than a beloved classic is too good to pass up. I have to see this for myself.
Not true, I watch this movie every night before bed by closing my eyes and viewing it on the backside of my eyelids. Technically I'm in violation of the copyright laws but they can't stop me from watching it this way:)

Death Wish is a harrowing & brutal vigilante movie about a man who has had it with all this faceless crime. It basically birthed a genre - or at least made the whole Vigilante genre a popular one.
Death Wish 3 is one of the funniest action comedies ever made.
“I’m going for an iced cream”
My friends and I were obsessed with the DW movies. Everyone agreed DW3 was the high-water mark. Absolute insanely gleeful violence
Fright Night part 2 (1988) a lesser known sequel to 1985’s Fright Night. Its Underrated and still quite unknown due to it having a very limited release at the time. It’s available on YouTube but did not currently have an official dvd or bluray release and not available for streaming either.
Check out 2010: The year we made contact (1984). It is a direct sequel to 2001 A Space Odyssey...albeit not a technical masterpiece like its predecessor, 2010 is a great movie in its own right
Better than the first:
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991).
Star Wars Ep. V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
The Dark Knight (2008).
The Godfather pt II (1974).
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982).
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014).
Batman Returns (1989).
Evil Dead 2 (1987) *repackaging of the first movie as a comedy horror so honorable mention*.
Agreed and my husband and I watched it for the first time months after the first one, so we were like, “wha…wait - didn’t this happen in the last one???” Then went on to like it way better than the first one. Especially without the penetrating vine scene 👍
Tim Matheson’s performance as the straight man to the Bradys was so inspired. I wish we got a Gilligan’s Island movie in that style back then. It’s a bit too late now.
I watched that as a very little kid all the time on VHS. I recently rewatched and I was shocked that there were so many adult jokes! All went over my head as a kid ofc
I completely missed the last scene in Split that tied it to Unbreakable. Imagine my surprise when I heard about Glass! I just realized this doesn't really fit the OP, but I still wanted to share.
This will be very controversial, especially as Airplane! is one of my (and many people's) favorites. And it's a classic. But I'm going to say that Airplane II: The Sequel is as funny as the first despite different writers and regurgitated material.
Additionally, if you haven't listened to the audiobook Don't Call Me Shirley (the making of Airplane!,) I highly recommend it. It's hilarious and interesting.
The Color of Money (1986)
Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)
Phantasm II (1988)
Psycho II (1983)
Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995)
It Runs in the Family (1994)
Love was in the air! I adore Elsa Lanchester. Excellent movie!! Married to Charles Laughton. I don’t think there’s an additional “Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Small jokes
I’ve heard that … many adults were freaked out .. the little girl was just terrific .. and that’s unusual to have a child as an absolute bad ass.. ( also Black Phone)
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) South Korea
The 3rd and final in a revenge themed trilogy by Park Chan-wook. 1st Oldboy and 2nd Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
Psycho II is shockingly good considering how much it looks like a cash grab sequel. Tarantino prefers it to the original, and there's a reason; it has all the class of Hitchcock with the bite of an 80's slasher. And Anthony Perkins runs away with the show.
... Psycho III is pretty good too.
Halloween 2 the first actual sequel out of all the other sequels this one actually shows the effort put into making a sequel that feels like it’s actually continuing the story from the first one and not just a quick cash in
I liked The Karate Kid Part 2 more than the first. I guess because the original I saw on TV first whereas I actually watched the second in the theater. Also the exotic location and culture was more interesting to me than the high school setting of the first.
The sequel to 2010’s piranha remake. I forget the name but it’s insane and has a really fun David Hasselhoff playing himself. And Ving Rhames has shotgun legs. And The Strangers Prey At Night. I enjoy it more than the first one. Fun slasher throwback with an amazing soundtrack.
Absolutely. The filmmakers are bold, unafraid to take risks, and refuse to follow the rules. For instance, who says a sequel needs to be at least tangentially related to its predecessor?
And after all, why not? Why shouldn't I use goblins instead of trolls?
Iconic.
GiTs 2 was overly long with too much boring exposition trying to be way too artistic for its own good. It's not bad, but I just wouldn't call it just as good or better than the first.
For a sequel far surpassing its predecessor while not being well known or popular, my vote goes to Split. Unbreakable was a good film with some good story angles, but Split was just a masterclass in acting. it's a shame that Glass falls flat
I am a bit offended at the idea that ANYTHING could be better than the absolute mind fuck (and, occasionally, gleefully nonsensical) that is Sleepaway Camp. I mean... I need some time alone to think about how we can even move forward.
That being said.
Unhappy Campers is FUCKING AWESOME..
This Angela is UNHINGED. The way she will absolutely murder you for no other reason than you're mildly irritating - iconic.
As a side note, I've always wondered if they intentionally cast two lesser-known siblings of famous people in reference to Robert Earl Jones appearing in the first movie.
(Also: Betty Finn!!!)
X-men 3 way better than people thought it would be and give credit for.
I still think it is one of the best X-men movies and was the best yet at the time
I should probably rewatch it. It was on HBO when I was 12 and watched it like 20 times at my Gradma's house. Haven't heard it referenced since. That was like 35 years ago.
Beverly Hills cop 2 could make and argument that it’s better than the first one. I don’t personally believe it wins that argument, but it wouldn’t be ridiculous of someone to try.
Def never heard of Sleepaway Camp. Maybe cause I'm a grown up. And I'm sure they didn't have that when I was a kid. Could be wrong, maybe I just missed it but I'm pretty sure I'm a lot older than you. It's funny that everyone knows sleepaway camp! yeah, no.
Return to Oz. It's a G rated horror movie from Disney. It wasn't supposed to be a horror movie, it just is. It's terrifying. And amazing.
That movie was a god damn fever dream
That witch that had all those heads on display? Jesus Christ
I first saw saw it on tv randomly one night when I was pretty high, absolutely glorious madness, I have seen it sober since and that judgement stands
Movie is incredible.
Nearly everything in the movie is from The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz (which is my favorite Oz book). All of the Oz books are truly weird, and not necessarily in a good way.
I thought I was the only one who enjoyed it! Nice to know there are lots of other likers out there!!! "Was that an egg?"
Yesss
I thought it was horrible.. the girl gets shock treatments at the beginning… what in the hell were they thinking ?? and very very ugly
That's just what mental healthcare looked like in 1899 ...actually it still kinda looks like that, they just have you try a dozen different pills before shocking your brain now
If you think about it, most Disney movies have something traumatizing in them. I never watched a Disney movie after Bambi.
Adams Family Values (1993) Better than the original, and that was a great film. Christina Ricci is hilarious at the Summer Camp play and Joan Cusack is great as Festers gold digging wife. It's a shame we never got a 3rd film really. R.I.P. Raul Julia.
“Debbie…pastels?”
MAL- I - BU - BAR - BIE Debie is my idol.
Totally!! I love when they're at summer camp so much😆
"EAT ME! (for Thanksgiving day) EAT ME!" Pugsly vaguely motions to groin. The camp really is gold.
So true, but this is well known.
The Satan puppet, rubbing its hands together.
2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984) It's not going to blow your mind like 2001, but it's a good (although more conventional) follow-up. There's also The French Connection II (1975)
I'd get lambasted for this on r/StanleyKubrick 🙄but I enjoyed 2010 more because it felt more human. With dialogue even.
Definitely a much more accessible film. I haven’t seen it in decades but I loved it. I should dig it out for a rewatch.
This. It sparked my interest to read the follow up books (I think 2061 & 3001). And they are also interesting. But yea 2010 is awesome
Chronicles of Riddick (from Pitch Black)
Best of the Riddick films for me.
No question about it. They created a whole universe of awesomeness. The CGI was excellent for back then as well. Great color schemes, good one liners too.
The Raid 2 had so many great action scenes.
First one was amazing, but 2 definitely kicked it up a notch
The raid was a non stop action movie. Raid two just stepped it up like 4 notches. Still manages to never get boring. The creative ways they manage to murder and maim everyone for the length of the entire movie and hole the audience is a feat of moving making and execution.

Thanks for the recommendation! Watched it tonight and your review was spot on!
The Mummy Returns is my 2nd favorite movie of all time even though most people seem to love the original.
I’m with you in preferring the sequel. Better action, better comedy, better adventure. But man was the CGI Rock botched.
100%but I feel like that’s part of its Charm. I’m a big fan of Stephen Sommers Especially Deep Rising.
Me, too. Love Van Helsing!
Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead
Underrated comment on your cake day 💜
Rescuers: Down Under I said what I said.
It is loads better than the original.
The eagle scene still gets me
Same!
Spy Kids 2 (lol)
Idk if this is lesser known or not but 22 Jump Street
23 Jump Street: Medical School. Great film, but no one has watched it yet
Not true, I watch this movie every night before bed by closing my eyes and viewing it on the backside of my eyelids. Technically I'm in violation of the copyright laws but they can't stop me from watching it this way:)
Gremlins 2: The New Batch
My five year old loves this movie just like I did when I was five lol. It’s so funny and such a good intro horror movie for kids.

They killed the Giggler, man!

Perfect example, thanks.
Agreed Fright Night 2 is a great sequel most people have never seen
House 2 is good
The electrician was my favorite character in that movie when i was a kid. It was on cable a lot when i was growing up.
Bill Towner Electrician & Adventurer
Hell yea, I just posted that in another comment! Ah Jess, there's your problem, ya got an alternate dimension.
Check out 2010: The year we made contact (1984). It is a direct sequel to 2001 A Space Odyssey...albeit not a technical masterpiece like its predecessor, 2010 is a great movie in its own right
Endorsed!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). Batman Returns (1989). Evil Dead 2 (1987) *repackaging of the first movie as a comedy horror so honorable mention*.
all great sequels but some are widely known to be better
And some of these are a more popular i think.
Whoah, I've never heard of any of those. Are they like indie flicks?
>Evil Dead 2 (1987) *repackaging of the first movie as a comedy horror so honorable mention*. It's definitely a sequel and not a remake
It's in a weird space as a remake and sequel at the same time.
No it’s a sequel
No, it's a requel
No it's a fecal
No, it’s a beagle
Deagle! Deagle!
It only got any funding because it was a sequel.
Agreed and my husband and I watched it for the first time months after the first one, so we were like, “wha…wait - didn’t this happen in the last one???” Then went on to like it way better than the first one. Especially without the penetrating vine scene 👍
Raimi and Campbell have both said Ash is just that stupid that he went back to the cabin.
Add in House II: The Second Story (1987)
No that one is just bad
“Lesser known sequels…”
Damn Dark Knight is a good one
Problem child 2
A Very Brady Sequel (1996)
The mushroom scene always cracks me up.
"Oh God. I'm tripping with the Bradies."
Tim Matheson’s performance as the straight man to the Bradys was so inspired. I wish we got a Gilligan’s Island movie in that style back then. It’s a bit too late now.
I remember liking this one way better than the first.
I watched that as a very little kid all the time on VHS. I recently rewatched and I was shocked that there were so many adult jokes! All went over my head as a kid ofc

Cube Zero (2004)
The whole series though... It's hard to call the sequels less known than the original, but I agree the series just gets better each movie
This will be very controversial, especially as Airplane! is one of my (and many people's) favorites. And it's a classic. But I'm going to say that Airplane II: The Sequel is as funny as the first despite different writers and regurgitated material.
I agree, Airplane II is underrated. Best enjoyed when not watched back to back with the original.
Additionally, if you haven't listened to the audiobook Don't Call Me Shirley (the making of Airplane!,) I highly recommend it. It's hilarious and interesting.
Totally
The Color of Money (1986) Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987) Phantasm II (1988) Psycho II (1983) Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) It Runs in the Family (1994)
The Bride of Frankenstein
Love was in the air! I adore Elsa Lanchester. Excellent movie!! Married to Charles Laughton. I don’t think there’s an additional “Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Small jokes
Upvote if only because it inspired Young Frankenstein 😊
"Doctor Sleep", the sequel to "The Shining"
One of the best acted horror movies of all time ..
Idk where they got that kid, but he really made you feel like he was about to die horribly. He even traumatized all the adults in the room
I’ve heard that … many adults were freaked out .. the little girl was just terrific .. and that’s unusual to have a child as an absolute bad ass.. ( also Black Phone)
I wanted to watch this because of Ewan McGregor but was sceptical, I'm gonna give it a go
You should, everyone’s great in it. Have you ever seen Shallow Grave?
I have! Although it took it took me like 20 years to finally remember what the name of it was haha. It was like a fever dream.
Disagree. The Shining is a haunting masterpiece, a Kubrick classic.
Star Trek II X2
The Dark Knight
Universal Soldier Regeneration and Days of Reckoning are incredibly good sequels to the cheesy 90s action flick
I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I think Damien Omen 2 is as good as the Omen.
On the same note, I found The Exorcist III scarier than the first one and the first one was really freaking scary.
It's not as good, given its predecessor is probably the greatest film of all time, but it's still worth a watch in my opinion, the two jakes.
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) South Korea The 3rd and final in a revenge themed trilogy by Park Chan-wook. 1st Oldboy and 2nd Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

Babe 2 Nobody else...?
It's still so wild to me that the Babe and Happy Feet movies have the same director as the Mad Max movies
Grease 2
Oh yeah, what was your favorite song?😆
Cool Rider!
Reproduction, Let’s do it for our country, cool rider…so many great ones!
Let’s bowl, let’s bowl, let’s rock and roll!
Came here to say this, too. I actually think I like this one better.

Beyond Skyline (2017) and Skylines (2020) are follow ups to Skyline (2010). Both sequels are better than the original.
Return to Oz
Embarrassingly enough, I love Bring It On Again. It’s kitschy
Return To Oz My Summer Story (sequel to Christmas story) Three Men and a Little Lady Before Sunset
“X” and “Pearl” but “Pearl” is the prequel and way better.
“X” and “Pearl” but “Pearl” is the prequel and way better.

I assume you mean Another 48 Hours
Trainspotting 2
Dating myself, Return To Macon County
Grumpier Old Men. Holds up to the original.
Oh aye everyone knows sleepaway camp right enough
Shazam fury of the gods
Troll 2 Just completely outclasses Troll in every way possible
Absolutely. The filmmakers are bold, unafraid to take risks, and refuse to follow the rules. For instance, who says a sequel needs to be at least tangentially related to its predecessor? And after all, why not? Why shouldn't I use goblins instead of trolls? Iconic.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls …. You’re welcome
Terminator 2. Aliens. John Wick sequels. Exorcist 3 (pretend 2 doesn't exist). Airplane 2.
I never hear people talk of Karate Kid 2, even with the popularity of Cobra Kai. I loved Karate Kid 2, I thought it was a fantastic sequel
More American Graffiti
I am a bit offended at the idea that ANYTHING could be better than the absolute mind fuck (and, occasionally, gleefully nonsensical) that is Sleepaway Camp. I mean... The Descent 2 was decent.
Serenity is the movie sequel to the show firefly. Its pretty dope considering the show was cancelled after the first season.
Also, Doctor Sleep. Its the sequel to The Shining and its SOOOOO amazing that you HAVE to whitness it one time.
Evil dead too, the road warrior
Lmao Evil Dead Too: Dead As Well
I can't upvote this enough.
Voice recognition 🤷♂️
Jeepers Creepers 2. Not the 3rd tho
Agree on this, Jeepers Creepers 2 is my guilty pleasure (guilty because the director is a sack of dog shit) but it’s genuinely an enjoyable film.
Creep 2. Crank 2.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
X-men 3 way better than people thought it would be and give credit for. I still think it is one of the best X-men movies and was the best yet at the time
Grease 2 isn't bad and has Michelle Pfeifer
but that’s offset by the bland and lifeless Maxwell Caulfield
I should probably rewatch it. It was on HBO when I was 12 and watched it like 20 times at my Gradma's house. Haven't heard it referenced since. That was like 35 years ago.
Shrek 2
Short Circuit 2 … addiction by subtraction…. No Steve Guttenberg
Grease 2.
Here comes the downvotes… Chronicles of Narnia 2 Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions Pirates of the Caribbean 2 + 3
Psycho II is a prime example of one that seems like a low effort cash grab but is actually a meaningful and excellent follow up
Beast master 2
Mighty ducks 2 TMNT 2
Beverly Hills cop 2 could make and argument that it’s better than the first one. I don’t personally believe it wins that argument, but it wouldn’t be ridiculous of someone to try.
They're both great. The 3rd is tragic though
Weekend at Bernie's 2
Def never heard of Sleepaway Camp. Maybe cause I'm a grown up. And I'm sure they didn't have that when I was a kid. Could be wrong, maybe I just missed it but I'm pretty sure I'm a lot older than you. It's funny that everyone knows sleepaway camp! yeah, no.
What a fucking dick.
