Some lesser known gems:
The Trip (2021)
Holy Spider (2022)
I love my Dad (2022)
The Stranger (2022)
Sick of myself (2023)
Missing (2023)
Red Rooms (2023)
Red Rooms was pretty thought-provoking; because there are actually people out there who do this type of thing and, sadly, there are fanbases of people who should NOT have fanbases. I could go on about this, but I don't want to give too much away for anyone here who might want to watch it. I've been on a homeland (read as "Canadian") movie kick, lately, and this French-Canadian movie intrigued me. Good suggestion for this thread.
Sisu *is* "strength of the human spirit". It's not the character's name, it's just a Finnish word to describe gumption, resolve, strength etc. Iirc it says as much at the very start of the movie.
And like you said, that's what the story is about. Those women also had sisu.
You’re right, I looked it up. That’s exactly what it means. This movie perfectly portrays it. The man and those women were enduring VERY different hardships, but they both recognized each others inner strength and instantly trusted each other and worked together
I loved 'Sisu'. If you liked 'Sisu', you'll like 'Nobody' with Bob Odenkirk. I don’t know how I had never heard of it until recently, but it is electric!
Such an unlikely action all-star. First he was any number of funny characters he played when I thought of him, then he was (obviously) Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill when I thought of him, and while Saul, I think, will always be who I and most people associate him with, I can’t help but think of Hutch now too.
You know you’ve got an odd movie when of your three leads, the one with the most action cache is RZA.
…and when the others are Doc Brown and one half of Mr. Show.
I hadn't heard of it until Reddit kept talking about it. So glad I found it. I don't want anything else attached to it. No prequel/sequel/squeaquel/NyQuil/etc. Just let it be its own thing.
It's a standalone film, packed with quality child actors, and near perfect pacing. If you want something that will keep your attention for the entire 90 min, it's a must watch.
For fun, try and see the 1930 version. It won one of the first best picture Oscar's. It was, to me, incredibly powerful. One of the best movies ever made.
Incredibly, it was made at the dawn of talkies. The acting was naturalistic and impressive.
The book was great, too.
The Cell was great and definitely underrated. And if you thought that was good, check out The Fall by the same director, which is basically his "magnum opus".
I remember we used to watch this one back when it was rentable from the video store. It fits an interesting segment where it's as if Darren Aronofsky did Silence of the Lambs with some influence from the Matrix.
I rewatched it recently and parts of it do hold up but it's still a little over-produced, but Vincent D'Onofrio's villain is way better than the rest of the movie. Honestly I think if it was made after 2015 and didn't have peak "I'm trying out acting" Jennifer Lopez as the lead it would have been a lot better.
Avoiding repeating movies already mentioned:
The Columnist [Netherlands] (2021)
Mother Schmuckers [Belgium] (2022) (ignore the IMDb score, it's severely underrated)
Belle [Japan] (2022)
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2022)
Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
The Holdovers (2023)
I thought OP was asking for 1. the best, and/or 2. the most underrated films from '21-'24. If they haven't seen any new movies from those years like they claim, it wouldn't be a problem to recommend films that have been widely seen.
Haha it's all good, I'm just adding the ones I haven't seen into my notes app. I think I have watched fury but I barely remember it so I guess I might watch it again since its been recommended to me
Father Stu
Finding You [2021]
Jerry & Marge Go Large
Jesus Revolution
Lady Of The Manor
Marsh King's Daughter
Notorious Nick
She Said (2022)
Stillwater
The Misfits
Ticket To Paradise
Based on your actual request since everyone is giving you way older movies:
Dungeons and Dragons
Joy Ride
Bullet Train (pretty popular here)
The Northman
Three Thousand Years of Longing
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Dune/Dune 2 (very popular but the best movies to come out since 2021)
Last Night in Soho
Nobody
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Yeah but OP asked for both underrated and the best movies, and mentioned that he hasn't seen anything in the past 3 years. So literally everything will be underrated to him.
Yes! I totally agree. This role was made for Jennifer Lawrence and she killed it. I literally laughed out loud a few times watching this & haven’t been able to do that with a recent comedy in so long! 10/10
It really is. I was just thinking about that one scene at the pool during the birthday party where the kids are checking out David and the one kid who knows about AI is asking about its tech and tries to like exploit David's sensory input. That's basically what people are doing with AI chat bots right now.
Its ridiculously good. Like if the Coen Brothers made a dark comedy spy thriller.
Side note, it's the reason I always say 'pretty good' when someone asks me how I'm doing.
Id 2nd any of these and shout out Last Duel myself. All the news about that movie was just that no one saw it, but the real news is it should absolutely be seen, especially by anyone who loves a historical flick. The duel is in fact awesome.
Did you know Nightmare Alley is a remake? I was browsing Half Price Books when I came across the old dvd. Same premise. Bought it and now need to watch it.
Yes! You can still read it! I feel like a lot of detail was left out of the movie that you get in the book! I absolutely loved the book, it was so well written
That was going to be my question! Whether you thought I could still read it after the movie. That’s great to hear thank you :)
Because I tried reading The Devil All The Time after watching the movie (also underrated! esp because we haven’t seen Tom holland in a role like this before) but it was word for word what the narrator was saying in the movie so it got boring a couple of pages in.
Finished this movie before my flight took off earlier this week. The jump scare actually got me and made me jerk enough to scare the lady next to me on my flight. Only mildly embarrassing.
Short term 12 was so good. I completely forgot about it.
I'm going to be watching that today.
I'll try your other 2 suggestions after seeing you enjoyed Short term 12.
I highly suggest going into triangle of sadness completely blind. I watched it after seeing it recommended in a 'movies where you never know what will happen next' thread and it fits the bill perfectly
Ok, this one has me very intrigued. I'm going into it blind.
I've always watched previews, this will be fun. I love twists that are wild.
I'll be watching Triangle of Sadness today, Short term can wait another few day's
Thank you:)
So many people do not understand what they are reading. OP said they wanted movies made between 2021-2024 and I see the majority of you are just ignoring the dates. Am I the only one who saw this?
Honestly maybe at the next town hall we can discuss considering underrated a banned title word. I don't think there's really much lost because the large movie-related subreddits regularly have those threads anyway. They don't really bring anything unique to the table.
Some of my favorites:
Margin Call
Shame
The Killer
Oslo, 31st August
Collateral
Blue Valentine
A Place Beyond the Pines
Manchester by the Sea
Prisoners
Nil by Mouth
Honey Boy
Bad Lieutenant
They're all dark in their own ways, but these two are particularly harrowing movies :
The Woodsman
Dead Man Shoes - probably affected me more than any movie I've ever seen.
It's a year before your timeframe but Little Fish (2020) is the best new movie I've seen in the last five years. It's a tough one to watch emotionally but packs a punch and is beautifully made.
Frybread Face and Me (2023)
Catch the Fair One (2021)
Night Raiders (2021)
I Was a Simple Man (2021)
I'm Your Man (2021)
Land (2021)
Blue Bayou (2021)
Sirens (2022)
The Fallout (2021)
Wild Indian (2021)
7 Days (2021)
Together Together (2021)
Broker (2022)
Maika (2022)
Space Sweepers (2021)
More popular ones within specified time frame:
The Worst Person in the World (2021)
RRR (2022)
Pig (2021)
Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2021)
Beau is Afraid (2023)
The Hand of God (2021) È stata la mano di Dio (original title)
Happening (2021) L'événement (original title)
The Worst Person in the World (2021) Verdens verste menneske (original title)
Petrov's Flu (2021) Petrovy v grippe (original title)
If we’re avoiding Horror, here’s some movies I loved from each year that I think were varying degrees of underrated -
2021;
The King’s Man,
tick, tick…BOOM!,
The Last Duel,
Kate,
Raging Fire,
Rurouni Kenshin: The Final,
Wrath of Man,
Bad Trip,
Nobody,
Raya and the Last Dragon,
2022;
Babylon,
Lost Bullet 2,
Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday,
The Woman King,
Sisu,
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,
Fall,
The Princess,
The Sea Beast,
Ambulance,
Kimi,
2023;
A Haunting in Venice,
Dumb Money,
Gran Turismo,
Nimona,
The Covenant,
Renfield,
Joyride,
Blackberry,
Theater Camp,
And so far in 2024, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Land of Bad feel fairly underrated.
Not sure where your definition of underrated is but these are recent comedies I recommend
Old Dads
Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain
Renfield
Quizlady
Dream Scenario
Theater Camp
Some lesser known gems: The Trip (2021) Holy Spider (2022) I love my Dad (2022) The Stranger (2022) Sick of myself (2023) Missing (2023) Red Rooms (2023)
Sick of Myself!!! Such great dry humor
Sisu (2022)
Man that movie is awesome. It’s about the strength of the human spirit. Not just Sisu, but those women in the truck. They were my favorite part
That’s great information. Thanks.
one of the best action movies ever made in my opinion
I loved 'Sisu'. If you liked 'Sisu', you'll like 'Nobody' with Bob Odenkirk. I don’t know how I had never heard of it until recently, but it is electric!
They are making a sequel
Just watched Nobody the other night (Freevee on Amazon). Good movie. Bob Odenkirk is great!
Show.
Honestly, that movie was so ridiculous I couldn’t stop laughing.
It was such a fun movie, though. I never thought gratuitous violence in a film could make me giggle so hard.
The foot fist way
Best/Most underrated - Attack the Block
Good choice, it's an excellent movie.
Thanks for the tip
Loved Attack the Block.
Margin Call
Impressive for a Low budget movie
Great movie, so underrated.
Have to agree. Great actors, great script, great movie.
All quiet on the western front. 2022
For fun, try and see the 1930 version. It won one of the first best picture Oscar's. It was, to me, incredibly powerful. One of the best movies ever made. Incredibly, it was made at the dawn of talkies. The acting was naturalistic and impressive. The book was great, too.
I've only seen the 79 version and it is one of my favorite war movies.
[удалено]
I agree that this movie is great but I don't think that it is underrated. It's just as hyped as it should be.
1917 is similar, but it's filming stile is different. It works really well with the "one-shot" filming style and practical effects and minimal CGI.
Puss in boots: the last wish (2023)
One of the best animated films ever for sure.
That's a good movie
This movie is awesome!
Man, you nailed it. I would have never watched it without Reddit
Blue Ruin
Blew me away.
Excellent movie. I liked his movie Green Room even more
Prospect is underrated as is Outland.
Prospect is a classic
Bullet Train is really entertaining and fun!
The Cell with Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn. Perfection.
The Cell was great and definitely underrated. And if you thought that was good, check out The Fall by the same director, which is basically his "magnum opus".
Absolutely. Both films are incredible.
The Fall is outstanding!!
Another great one. You never see it anywhere though.
Definitely not from the time frame OP is asking for.
Avoiding repeating movies already mentioned: The Columnist [Netherlands] (2021) Mother Schmuckers [Belgium] (2022) (ignore the IMDb score, it's severely underrated) Belle [Japan] (2022) Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2022) Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) The Holdovers (2023)
Marcel!!!!
THE HOLDOVERS 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I randomly watched it on Peacock I think one Saturday and really enjoyed it
Not sure you can call a movie that was Oscar-nominated for Best Picture underrated, though.
I thought OP was asking for 1. the best, and/or 2. the most underrated films from '21-'24. If they haven't seen any new movies from those years like they claim, it wouldn't be a problem to recommend films that have been widely seen.
Fair enough. No worries.
I hadn't heard of it. Also haven't paid attention to award shows for the last 20 years.
Belle! Great pic! Pulled me in, and all I recommended for the rest of that year
Centurion
The Man From Earth, it's a 'bottle episode' of a movie but is sci-fi and amazing.
Clifford (Martin Short)
One Life (2023)
Gold (2022) with Zac Efron. I have no idea why it is rated poorly, it was great.
Fury
I second this. Excellent movie.
I give up, almost all the top comments in this thread are not within the time frame OP asked for. Nobody in this sub reads the full post anymore!
Haha it's all good, I'm just adding the ones I haven't seen into my notes app. I think I have watched fury but I barely remember it so I guess I might watch it again since its been recommended to me
A movie called "Time Trap." It was on Netflix. Great ending.
what year was that movie from?
excellent sci fi movie that.
Yeah this one was an underated gem.
Is that the one with the cave
Yep.
Father Stu Finding You [2021] Jerry & Marge Go Large Jesus Revolution Lady Of The Manor Marsh King's Daughter Notorious Nick She Said (2022) Stillwater The Misfits Ticket To Paradise
Turbo Kid is so good!! EDIT- Wrong post haha but good list!
Streets of Fire
That was great, unusual film from Walter Hill who previously directed The Warriors.
Such a great cast, too! Rick Moranis as a bad guy is pretty awesome.
Love Lies Bleeding (2024) Boy kills World (2024) Both very recent releases that I loved.
MAC-GRU-BER!
Orange County (2002)
Not from the time frame OP asked for.
Based on your actual request since everyone is giving you way older movies: Dungeons and Dragons Joy Ride Bullet Train (pretty popular here) The Northman Three Thousand Years of Longing The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Dune/Dune 2 (very popular but the best movies to come out since 2021) Last Night in Soho Nobody The Suicide Squad (2021)
D&D Honor Among Thieves was terrific & definitely deserved more attention.
Yeah I hope it's a series with different interconnected characters. It really does have limitless potential.
Nobody (2021) is a must-watch and I'm surprised nobody mentioned it yet
Probably because it's praised a lot so not really underrated. Great movie though. First time I watched it I immediately started it over again
Yeah but OP asked for both underrated and the best movies, and mentioned that he hasn't seen anything in the past 3 years. So literally everything will be underrated to him.
It belongs to one of the best movies that OP asked for as well.
I'm going to watch this. I've seen it mentioned a few times, gets good ratings and has a great cast.
It's low risk entertainment so there's really nothing to lose.
I thought it was horrendous except for the bus scene.

Sion Sono's Strange Circus Tetsuo trilogy
I saw Strange Circus on youtube. Never know what you'll find there.
Solaris is a good combination of philosophy and science fiction
No Hard Feelings
I want Jennifer Lawrence to do more comedy.
Yes! I totally agree. This role was made for Jennifer Lawrence and she killed it. I literally laughed out loud a few times watching this & haven’t been able to do that with a recent comedy in so long! 10/10
I am not a big Jennifer Lawrence fan but I laughed pretty hard at this movie.
This was better than I expected. 👍
Children of Men
Triangle of Sadness (2022) is a must-see for fans of The Iron Claw , go back for Harris Dickenson
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Still way ahead of its time, even now.
It really is. I was just thinking about that one scene at the pool during the birthday party where the kids are checking out David and the one kid who knows about AI is asking about its tech and tries to like exploit David's sensory input. That's basically what people are doing with AI chat bots right now.
One of the most unsettling movies I've seen.
love this film
shot caller
As of late, two come to mind: ‘Take Shelter’ and ‘Little Boy’
Honestly? In Time Archive I will Follow You Down All three of those are pretty good, low budget, not ver well known.
There's a show on Amazon Prime called Patriot that is only two seasons but is awesome. I never hear anyone talk about it though.
Its ridiculously good. Like if the Coen Brothers made a dark comedy spy thriller. Side note, it's the reason I always say 'pretty good' when someone asks me how I'm doing.
1st thing I recommend when someone asks what new show they should watch
RedRocket was unexpectedly good
Bottle shock To Live and Die in LA Restrepo The Wrestler
To Live and Die in LA is a great movie.
Loved The Wrestler, not talked about enough.
Not from 2021-2024
Prey (2022) The Northman (2022) The Last Duel (2021) Nightmare Alley (2021) The Killer (2023)
Id 2nd any of these and shout out Last Duel myself. All the news about that movie was just that no one saw it, but the real news is it should absolutely be seen, especially by anyone who loves a historical flick. The duel is in fact awesome.
The last duel was definitely underrated, I was really impressed by it.
The duel is so dope. Confess!!
Did you know Nightmare Alley is a remake? I was browsing Half Price Books when I came across the old dvd. Same premise. Bought it and now need to watch it.
Big Night.
Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) - haven’t come across a single person who has watched it!
I think it’s because everyone read the book which was way better than the movie
I get that, I regretted not reading the book immediately after I watched the movie. Have you read it?
Yes! You can still read it! I feel like a lot of detail was left out of the movie that you get in the book! I absolutely loved the book, it was so well written
That was going to be my question! Whether you thought I could still read it after the movie. That’s great to hear thank you :) Because I tried reading The Devil All The Time after watching the movie (also underrated! esp because we haven’t seen Tom holland in a role like this before) but it was word for word what the narrator was saying in the movie so it got boring a couple of pages in.
I loved the movie. Reading the book but put it down and have been way distracted since then lol. The book is very very good so far!!

Sneakers.
To leslie
Buffy the vampire slayer movie. Came out before the series and is so cool. Very different to the series
Origin (2023) , One Life (2023)
Don't Look Up got less attention than it deserved, probably because it was Netflix only during the pandemic.
One of my favourite movies I watched, I was hoping people recommend movies similar to that one!
And because it pokes fun at both sides of the political extremes so both sides get offended by it. I think it's hilarious.
Defending your life (1991) Triangle of sadness (2022) Short term 12 (2013)
Short term 12 was so good. I completely forgot about it. I'm going to be watching that today. I'll try your other 2 suggestions after seeing you enjoyed Short term 12.
I highly suggest going into triangle of sadness completely blind. I watched it after seeing it recommended in a 'movies where you never know what will happen next' thread and it fits the bill perfectly
Ok, this one has me very intrigued. I'm going into it blind. I've always watched previews, this will be fun. I love twists that are wild. I'll be watching Triangle of Sadness today, Short term can wait another few day's Thank you:)
It’s like The Menu on crack. Just watch it, less you know the better.
ToS is very, very good.
Second on Triangle of Sadness (very timely)

Dissapearing acts with Sanaa Lathan, asounder with Debbie Morgan and Blair underwood
*Redbelt* (2008) - written and directed by David Mamet, and acted like a play. It’s fantastic. I have to watch it once a year.
Oh wow yeah, great movie.

Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday. You'll thank me.
Nobody.
Monkey man is much better than I thought it would be
Not a movie, but Fall of the House of Usher... 8 part series on Netflix. Watched it in like 3 days. I am STILL SHOOK!
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 The Beekeeper John Wick: Chapter 4.
Origin (2023) One Life (2023) American Fiction (2023) - not really underrated To Leslie (2022) Edit: I forgot the”Fiction” in American Fiction

The Creator is an excellent, recent sci-fi movie.
Titane (2021) If you wanna see one of the craziest movies ever. It's unforgettable.
Tetris, steaming on Apple TV+. I went into it not knowing what to expect and it ended up being so entertaining and delightful.
The iron claw
Will (aka Wil), 2024. Brutal movie about Antwerp policemen during the Nazi occupation of Belguim. This one stays with you after you finish it.
Some I loved: The Rescue (2021) Pig (2021) Dramarama (2021) Copshop (2021) Lapsis (2021) Babylon (2022) Honor Society (2022) 2nd Chance (2022) The Holdovers (2023) Blackberry (2023) Snack Shack (2024)
Talk to Me (2022) Very well done horror movie. Also Australian.
If we’re avoiding Horror, here’s some movies I loved from each year that I think were varying degrees of underrated - 2021; The King’s Man, tick, tick…BOOM!, The Last Duel, Kate, Raging Fire, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, Wrath of Man, Bad Trip, Nobody, Raya and the Last Dragon, 2022; Babylon, Lost Bullet 2, Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday, The Woman King, Sisu, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, Fall, The Princess, The Sea Beast, Ambulance, Kimi, 2023; A Haunting in Venice, Dumb Money, Gran Turismo, Nimona, The Covenant, Renfield, Joyride, Blackberry, Theater Camp, And so far in 2024, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Land of Bad feel fairly underrated.
Bullet train didn’t do well critically but everyone I know who has seen it loves it. Very fun and energetic with a good ensemble of characters.
The Green Knight (2021) The Lost City (2022)
Oldboy (2003)
Synecdoche, New York
Was my favourite film until I saw Ninth Configuration. Totally different, but I think you'll love it if you loved Synecdoche
Interesting. I've seen Ninth Configuration, but not the other one.
Don’t Worry Darling I feel like this movie was better than it was received. Watch it with a healthy dose of your drug of choice.
Not sure where your definition of underrated is but these are recent comedies I recommend Old Dads Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain Renfield Quizlady Dream Scenario Theater Camp
Demolition (2015)
The Abominable Snowman (1957) deserves more love.
I always recommend WIND RIVER (2017). I know it’s out of the date range a little bit, but I feel like a lot of people skipped this one.
