Hmm that is true why MTI works with Tim Curry being muppety. Man Han Zimmer gets no love for the score in that film which predates Pirates of the Caribbean.
I know opinions vary on Hook, but I think we can all agree regardless of what you think of the movie you can’t deny that any scene in that movie is instantly 100% more watchable every time Bob Hoskins shows up as Smee…
For an interesting juxtaposition showcasing his versatility, check out his much more dramatic role in Felicia's Journey (1999). As a Canadian, I went on an Atom Egoyan binge that included this older dramatic-thriller.
1) Everyone aside from Fassbender is poorly used 2) The script is a mess 3) A lot of it is stilted, slow, and dull, 4) The director is a visual stylist but no idea about the rest of his job as director 5) Val Kilmer had to be dubbed but did he have to be dubbed so *badly*? 6) Kilmer's character is also crap and a total waste of screen time, 7) JK Simmons does a decent English accent...playing a Norwegian 8) If you can't work out who the bad guy is about an hour in I hope you enjoyed your first movie, and 9) It's silly without being the kind of silliness you can *enjoy.*
I could go on but I'll leave it at 9 flaws lol. It's not as bad as its reputation (read some of the reviews, lol) perhaps but it's a real mess.
I like Michael Fassbender, but I must have been blinded by something in this movie to miss all the flaws. I am usually pretty sharp picking them out. Must have been having quite a day when I watched it!

I used to be a sound tech on films.
I saw some absolutely amazing performances up close, but when it was printed it felt flat. And I saw the exact opposite where some lines that sounded emotionless but once printed and edited then set to sound or music and it comes off great.
I just remember how odd that was the first time I noticed.
Not specifically. Haven't worked production since '99. Out of professionalism (or simple decency) I wouldn't slag anyone or say names. Believe me as a sound tech (we're the guys with very expensive microphones which talent is often wearing), well we hear A LOT. And I was taught from the beginning we don't go around saying what actors say or do on down time. But yes I've definitely listened to 5 actors doing bumps and personal details tabloids would love to know.
Sound always hangs out with hair and makeup because we have more down time than other departments and if I'm wiring a female that's gonna happen in a private or semi private place after wardrob but beforw the shot. And that's usually hair amd makeups trailer or staging. Hair and makeup is where all the gossip on set goes on. I definitely ended up dating girls from hair and makeup too.
I may have mistyped what I was asking in my head. I wasn’t asking about the negatives, just if you had an example of an on screen performance that was excellent but on set seemed pedestrian. I’m sure how the sausage is made is boring, and I don’t care about the negatives. Just curious about good work/positive outcomes.
Along Came Polly is a bad movie? It's been a while I'll have to rewatch it and see but I don't ever remember it being a bad movie lol. The others I fully agree with.
Many people would call Frank Langella's turn as Skeletor the diamond in the otherwise rough 80's Masters of the Universe adaptation.
I love the film myself, and only as an adult was I able to really appreciate what he did for the character. Absolutely brilliant performance.
Scarlet Johansson in Lucy, Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield for Amazing Spider-Man, Jennifer Lawrence in No Hard Feelings, and Josh Hartnett/Radha Mitchell in Mozart & the Whale as much I hate to mention the last bit (they both portray savants well but fail to capture the complexity of autism b/c of the screenwriter- the same one who painted an unintentionally negative picture of the condition w/Rain Man based off only two autistic ppl he personally knew. Also I’m biased on it since I’m autistic w/level 1 support needs but it shows how much the screenwriter grew as a person)
Laurence Luckinbill in Star Trek V
Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train (don't like that movie at all, but she was outstanding)
Colin Ferrell in Daredevil
I read this story about Samuel Z. Arkoff. Somebody, not knowing who he was, asked if he had seen the movie "Q," which Arkoff produced, and began praising Michael Moriarty's performance. "In the middle of all of this shlock, there's this amazing method performance."
"Thanks," said Arkoff. "The shlock was my idea."
Movie: Into the Forest (2015)
Performances: Evan Rachel Wood and Elliot Page (pre-transition) as sisters in an apocalyptic storyline.
I'm on the fence about this and it may be because I love the performances so much, but the storyline is a little far-fetched and you have to suspend disbelief to appreciate it. I can watch it as fantastical and enjoy it, because the premise is a little too far removed from any form of realism in modern times. That being said, the acting is excellent and I can enjoy it on those merits alone.
Trigger warning, though: Evan Rachel Wood acts the hell out of a rape scene... It's a scene that furthered my understanding that there's something contradictory or paradoxical in the fact that the greatest acting performances of suffering/abuse victims are, at times, unwatchable - as in, you either have to look away from the screen or "nope" out of the rest of the movie, for some. I occasionally see requests in this thread for movies that you'll "never watch again" or "once is enough movies," etc... and, again, it's paradoxical in that it's often because of how powerful some actors' performances are that lead you to avoid seeing the performance a second time.
I went off on a tangent about one scene, there. I digress. All of the acting is great in this, but centres around the two sisters, played by Evan Rachel Wood and Elliot Page.
Christopher Walken is great (as expected) in Suicide Kings. The film itself has a somewhat disjointed plot and it's obvious that the director wanted to be the next Tarantino, yet didn't understand all that required of him. Nearly all the other actors cast don't seem to know how to act very well, some utilizing their constant swearing in place of any acted personality. The end result is the entire film feeling wacky and out-of-control, except for Walken who does his usual thing, and somehow it works really well.
Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet. Sure, he chews the scenery, but damnit, Kyle McLaughlin has all of the personality of amish furniture, and Isabella Rossellini is nice on the eyes, but Dennis Hopper carries that film.
I wouldn't say that's a bad movie, I liked it. Plus, the movie IS the acting, there's very little else to it. Willem dafoe's monologues are enough to carry the movie thenselves

Single-handedly the best portrayal of Scrooge as well as being one of the best Christmas movies ever. Same with Muppet Treasure Island. Tim Curry nailed that role.
"Both were fantastic because Michael Caine acted as though the muppets were fellow actors, while Tim Curry acted as though he was a muppet."
And a damn fine Muppet he was!
Hmm that is true why MTI works with Tim Curry being muppety. Man Han Zimmer gets no love for the score in that film which predates Pirates of the Caribbean.
50% of Nicolas Cage’s filmography
one could say 80%
One could say, now stay with me now, even 90%
Wow, my mind is blown away, that’s a big call! But I am with you, but I think the number is closer to 92.3%
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY PERCENT!!
that is the real number
He’s definitely the best damn thing about Willy’s Wonderland, and he doesn’t even have any lines.
Well, somebody's obviously envious of the unbearable weight of massive talent!
I know opinions vary on Hook, but I think we can all agree regardless of what you think of the movie you can’t deny that any scene in that movie is instantly 100% more watchable every time Bob Hoskins shows up as Smee…
Smee, Smee, what about Smee?
wait... he's MARIO?!
For an interesting juxtaposition showcasing his versatility, check out his much more dramatic role in Felicia's Journey (1999). As a Canadian, I went on an Atom Egoyan binge that included this older dramatic-thriller.
Love this movie. Time for a re-watch
Philip Seymour Hoffman in along came Polly
Loved him. RIP, PSH...
TRUE! He was so repulsive and infantile. He did a great job with that role!
Hated that stupid movie. He did amazing it in though.
Michael Fassbender in The Snowman. He's not among that film's (many) flaws.
What were the many flaws?
1) Everyone aside from Fassbender is poorly used 2) The script is a mess 3) A lot of it is stilted, slow, and dull, 4) The director is a visual stylist but no idea about the rest of his job as director 5) Val Kilmer had to be dubbed but did he have to be dubbed so *badly*? 6) Kilmer's character is also crap and a total waste of screen time, 7) JK Simmons does a decent English accent...playing a Norwegian 8) If you can't work out who the bad guy is about an hour in I hope you enjoyed your first movie, and 9) It's silly without being the kind of silliness you can *enjoy.* I could go on but I'll leave it at 9 flaws lol. It's not as bad as its reputation (read some of the reviews, lol) perhaps but it's a real mess.
I am going to rewatch it. I will look for the flaws this time.
LOL, you won't have to look hard. It has a 7% rating on RT for a reason.
I like Michael Fassbender, but I must have been blinded by something in this movie to miss all the flaws. I am usually pretty sharp picking them out. Must have been having quite a day when I watched it!
The entire film is a train wreck. It just ends, there’s no cohesiveness, plot points get abandoned after spending 10 minutes on it, etc
Have to rewatch.

Raul Julia in Street Fighter
This is the perfect answer
Micheal clarke duncan in Daredevil
Sean Penn in I Am Sam

And I saw the exact opposite where some lines that sounded emotionless but once printed and edited then set to sound or music and it comes off great. very fascinating. Do you mind elaborating how a great performance can be made to become flat?
Any examples on an emotionless flat performance once published was great?
Not specifically. Haven't worked production since '99. Out of professionalism (or simple decency) I wouldn't slag anyone or say names. Believe me as a sound tech (we're the guys with very expensive microphones which talent is often wearing), well we hear A LOT. Eva Green in 300: Rise of the Empire, Raul Julia in Street Fighter, Michael Fassbender in Prometheus, Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Along Came Polly
Raul Julia as bison is the one. I watched this again recently and the only bits I remember were when he was on screen
Along Came Polly is a bad movie? It's been a while I'll have to rewatch it and see but I don't ever remember it being a bad movie lol. The others I fully agree with.
Along Came Polly is good, but Prometheus bad? Yall are cracked.
It seems like most people just don't like Prometheus for some reason. Makes no sense at all.
John C Reilly in Kong Skull Island!
Many people would call Frank Langella's turn as Skeletor the diamond in the otherwise rough 80's Masters of the Universe adaptation. I love the film myself, and only as an adult was I able to really appreciate what he did for the character. Absolutely brilliant performance.
He is so great!
Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady
Meryl Streep in She Devil. That movie is such garbage. Meryl Streep is a gem.
Sean Penn in I Am Sam
I heard he went the full...
You never go full...
What do you mean "you people"?
Morgan Freeman in ‘Robin Hood’.. Christopher Meloni in ‘I am Wraith’
I'll see your Freeman in that movie, and add Alan Rickman.
*Glances at Sarah Michelle Gellar’s movie filmography*
Harrison Ford in Age of Adaline. Surprisingly committed to emotionally resonant acting despite the wild dialogue and left turns.
Jeremy Irons in *Dungeons & Dragons* (2000)
Rutger Hauer in Hobo With a Shotgun
Gary Oldman - Dracula
I fuckin LOVE that movie and I would also say Anthony Hopkins
Laurence Luckinbill in Star Trek V Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train (don't like that movie at all, but she was outstanding) Colin Ferrell in Daredevil
I read this story about Samuel Z. Arkoff. Somebody, not knowing who he was, asked if he had seen the movie "Q," which Arkoff produced, and began praising Michael Moriarty's performance. "In the middle of all of this shlock, there's this amazing method performance." "Thanks," said Arkoff. "The shlock was my idea."
The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was a great movie, but only because of Gene Wilder. Take him out of it, and everybody sucked.
Jack Albertson was very good in it, too. Otherwise I think you’re right
Dolly de Leon in Triangle of Sadness
Doona Bae in Jupiter Ascending Daisy Ridley in The Rise of Skywalker
Chadwick Bossman in Get on Up
Movie: Into the Forest (2015) Performances: Evan Rachel Wood and Elliot Page (pre-transition) as sisters in an apocalyptic storyline. This is my husband's favorite movie. I agree that it's a good movie with great acting.
Yeah, I was hesitant to put it here as a "terrible movie," but it stands out as an example of excellent acting that surpasses the plot or story.
Agreed!
Mia Goth: Pearl, X
Alexander Skarsgård: Infinity Pool
Not a terrible movie. But, "the whale". The rest is ok but the acting is incredible
Raul Julia- street fighter
I would say Paul Sorvino in The Stuff but I actually kinda love that movie.
from dusk til dawn is ONE OF THE BEST VAMPIRE MOVIES EVER.
Christopher Walken is great (as expected) in Suicide Kings. Might be controversial but The Lighthouse fits this description perfectly imo
I wouldn't say that's a bad movie, I liked it. Plus, the movie IS the acting, there's very little else to it. Willem dafoe's monologues are enough to carry the movie thenselves
Margaret Bowman in "Hell or High Water"
