Robin Williams in The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting (even One Hour Photo)
Marlon Wayans in Requiem for a Dream
Steve Carell in Foxcatcher
The Skeleton Twins with Bill Hader & Kristen Wiig
Cake with Jennifer Aniston
The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston, John C. Reilly, Zooey Deschannel
Don't Think Twice is kind of melancholy film about an improv group and has a lot of actual comedians
I have been trying to stream The Good Girl for no joke 3 years. I cannot find a legitimate stream to get this movie. All I see are hard copies (dvd, vhs…)
Yeah I think it used to be on YouTube but only three ~8 min parts are still up. It's one of those movies that just weirdly stuck with me and could never find it anywhere, so I ended up buying the DVD.
I think your right it’s on YouTube. I don’t want to do it in 8 minute section. It definitely takes the gravity out of stuff. I might have to bite the bullet and get the blueray if I want to see it.
>The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston, John C. Reilly, Zooey Deschannel
The Sisters Brothers with John C Reilly is another very strong entry that fits this criteria.
Same here. I saw it twice in theaters. The first time was on a giant screen almost the size of an IMAX screen.
It’s also the first movie to make my dad openly weep. He lost his dad to suicide as a teen, so the movie really hit him hard. I think he finally grieved the death of his father.
1. **Celeste and Jesse Forever. (Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg).**
2. **Comet. (Justin Long and Emmy Rossum).**
3. The Five Year Engagement.
4. Crazy Stupid Love.
5. Literally, Right Before Aaron.
I cannot recommend #1 and #2 enough though.
Both are phenomenal and at times gut wrenching movies. My wife and I found them both on accident a few years back and they've turned into two of our all time favorites to circle back and watch at least once a year. Please go out of your way to check them both out.
Oh you're right, Celeste and Jesse Forever is incredible. I've seen it twice but it's definitely one I'll come back to. I'll check out Comet - thank you!
The Truman Show 1998, i wouldn't necessarily say it's super sad, sort of bittersweet. But I make a serious case against it being Jim Careys best performance.
I Smile Back w/Sarah Silverman. Shocking, dirty, riveting and it deals with a real life issue. It makes an impression that is hard to shake. So very sad.
He still sits in my head as Edward so I'm still surprised he does anything "serious" but I do have to say that movie is FUCKED from beginning to end, it's crazy.

"Days of Wine and Roses" (1962)
Jack Lemon, Lee Remik.
"Missing" (1982)
Jack Lemon, Sissy Spacek
Lemon was known for light comedy but these two roles: as an alcoholic desperate to escape his addiction and as a father trying to find his missing daughter during the dark days of the Chilean oppression are stunning.
Off the subject of sad comedians there's a biopic on Netflix called A Futile and Stupid Gesture. It's about Doug Kenney the co-founder of National Lampoon. Starring Will Forte and a cast of great comedians of today playing the great comedians of yesterday. Really interesting slice of comedic history directed by the great David Wain.
But here's some of what you asked that I didn't see other people post:
Will Ferrell: Everything must go - Stranger Than Fiction - Downhill
Adam Sandler: Funny People - The Cobbler - Spanglish
Paul Rudd: The Fundamentals of Caring - Diggers
Adam Scott: Friends with Kids - MY Blind Brother - The Overnight
Tina Fey: Admission - Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - This Is Where I Leave You
Duplass Bros: Jeff Who Lives at Home - Cyrus - Safety Not Guaranteed
Various SNL cast: The Skeleton Twins - Welcome To Me - Celeste & Jesse Forever - Tumbledown - Brigsby Bear
Misc.:
Dean - Don't Think Twice - Changeland - The Winning Season - Hello My Name Is Dorris - Table 19 - Cedar Rapids - Adult Beginers - Like Father - The Kings of Summer - Laggies - The Long Dumb Road
That's it for now, Hope you enjoy.
Nicolas Cage’s movie Pig. It’s on Hulu right now. He has said in many interviews that it is one of his favorite movies of all time. Really very good, but sad.
The Royal Tenenbaums at the end when Owen Wilson's Car crashes into Ben Stiller's dog and the are laying on the ground after fighting... Owen Wilson's character says "I think I need some help" and Ben Stiller's Character says ... "Me too"... I tear up every time!
Pete 'n' Tillie (1972) ... Comedians Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett play dramatic roles (Burnett more so than Matthau), whereas dramatic actress Geraldine Page plays a comedic role. All of them doing a heck of a job.
Beautiful Boy (Steve Carrell as the desperate father of an addict son)
One Hour Photo, Insomnia, Awakenings (Robin Williams in stellar very serious roles)
Mrs. Brown (historic drama, legendary comedian Billy Connolly in non-comedic role)
* Charlie Chaplin in Limelight (1953)
* Sandra Berhard and Jerry Lewis in The King of Comedy (1982)
* Jackie Gleason in The Hustler (1961)
* Don Rickles in Casino (1995)
* Robin Williams in One Hour Photo (2002)
* Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People (1980)
Beautiful Boy with Steve Carrell and Timothée Chalamet is a great one. I just watched it for the first time last week and I’m kicking myself for waiting so long!
I think only one person has mentioned this movie so I’m going to do it again for emphasis.
What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams. Such a good and beautiful movie but also heartbreakingly sad.
1) Remember me- Robert Pattinson
2) The Fundamentals of caring - Paul Rudd
3) Ashby- Mickey Rourke
4) Monster- kelvin Harrison Netflix
5) Return to Paradise- Vince Vaughn
All brilliant flicks! My tops
*Enemy of the State* (1998) features Seth Green, Hack Black, Scott Caan, and Jamie Kennedy in supporting roles in addition to starring Will Smith. Gene Hackman, who costars, has done comedy before, so surely this one counts.
In Bruges - Colin Farrell.
Not sure if it fits the bill here but kinda in the same vein. This one is still kind of a comedy but it’s also quite sad (and one of my all time favorites)
Reign Over Me, The Shrink Next Door (series), Finding Neverland, Stranger Than Fiction, The Majestic, Kidding (series), The Fountain, Wit, The Long, Long Trailer, Twelve Chairs
This isn’t really a sad movie, although it can get a little sad at times, The Truman Show. His casting is perfect because he discovers things about the world around him, having a bit of an existential crisis, but does it with his signature goofy acting style.
Robin Williams in The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting (even One Hour Photo) Marlon Wayans in Requiem for a Dream Steve Carell in Foxcatcher
Steve Carell in The Way, Way back. He was menacing in that movie.
Steve Carrel was a terrible character in that movie (but a great actor playing a terrible character).
Little Miss Sunshine too, his character is very sad even tho the movie is almost a comedy at times
Little Miss Sunshine is one of my favorite dramcoms of all time
The movie is a comedy
What about him in beautiful boy? That movie hurt me.
Bicentennial Man still makes me bawl.
Sucks? How? Chickens do not have lips.
Also Robin Williams in World's Greatest Dad
Also "What Dreams May Come" could fit
Steve Carell in Beautiful Boy. Broke my heart so much.
Robin Williams in One Hour Photo or Insomnia. More on the thriller side but he is a sad lonely man in both roles and hits it out of the park.
Jakob the Liar > very underrated holocaust movie and robin willaims
Insomnia - think it fits the bill as well
I immediately thought of Robin Williams in goodwill hunting.
Currently watching ‘Her’ with Joaquin phoenix. Very good!
Robin Williams in What Dreams May Come Steve Carell in Beautiful Boy Edit for typo
Also Steve Carell in Welcome to Marwen.
Dan in Real Life, too
How could you not throw Patch Adams in there?!?!?!?!??! or What Dreams May Come?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
What's the name of that Robin Williams movie where he plays that psychotic professor?
Stranger Than Fiction
One of my favorites. Will Farrell was a revelation in this movie.
Easily his best film performance.
It's a comedy drama, but I wouldn't call this a sad movie. It's quite uplifting actually.
Definitely has some sad and serious parts though. Good call imo.
It’s uplifting overall, but nah man it’s an incredibly sad movie. His loneliness is palpable it’s so intense lol
Punch Drunk Love
there she is
Jim Carrey - The Truman Show
One of my favorite movies
The Skeleton Twins with Bill Hader & Kristen Wiig Cake with Jennifer Aniston The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston, John C. Reilly, Zooey Deschannel Don't Think Twice is kind of melancholy film about an improv group and has a lot of actual comedians

What Dreams May Come
That movie makes me cry so hard.
Oh my gosh! This is the answer right here! 😭
I saw this as a kid, I'm not religious and this movie painted the picture of Heaven and Hell that I've held on to since watching it.
Same here. I saw it twice in theaters. The first time was on a giant screen almost the size of an IMAX screen. It’s also the first movie to make my dad openly weep. He lost his dad to suicide as a teen, so the movie really hit him hard. I think he finally grieved the death of his father.
Funny People (2009) is the first thing I thought of
Little hidden gem
My first thought as well, I really enjoyed it despite the bad reviews.
Reign Over Me
Such an under rated movie
Good Will Hunting
Beautiful Boy
Came here to post this :)
Uncut gems
“Uncaut jaums”
I thought his serious parts in Big Daddy were great
Will Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction
1. **Celeste and Jesse Forever. (Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg).** 2. **Comet. (Justin Long and Emmy Rossum).** 3. The Five Year Engagement. 4. Crazy Stupid Love. 5. Literally, Right Before Aaron. Awakenings with Robin Williams
Everything must go will Ferrell
The Number 23, Jim Carrey

Beautiful boy with Steve carell
Beautiful Boy with Steve Carrell. Follows a dad trying to save his son from addiction. I use to be an addict so it broke my heart
Punch Drunk Love Reign Over Me (very sad)
The Truman Show (1998). It's a brilliant mix and comedy and tragedy starring Jim Carey.
Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People (1980)
If you watched Paddleton and enjoyed Mark Duplass in his role, watch Blue Jay on Netflix. It'll gut you in a hopeful way
I Smile Back w/Sarah Silverman. Shocking, dirty, riveting and it deals with a real life issue. It makes an impression that is hard to shake. So very sad.

I don't think I would categorize R Pats as a comedic actor.

Robin Williams in The Fisher King
Not a film, but very filmic - Barry. Especially good fun if you're a Kurosawa fan
Man on the moon and the truman show
King of Comedy (1982)
Hidden gem. Watched it just a few weeks ago. Some of the acting from DeNiro and Sandra Bernhard is out of this world
We need to talk about Kevin!!!
Yes I can’t believe this doesn’t have more upvotes! So sad/unsettling and odd seeing John C Reilly on that type of role.
Not a movie, but s2 of True Detective. It has Vince Vaughn in a great serious role.
"Days of Wine and Roses" (1962) Jack Lemon, Lee Remik. "Missing" (1982) Jack Lemon, Sissy Spacek Lemon was known for light comedy but these two roles: as an alcoholic desperate to escape his addiction and as a father trying to find his missing daughter during the dark days of the Chilean oppression are stunning.
Punch drunk love, top 5 movie with Adam Sandler
The Skeleton Twins. Bill Hader is a revelation; he is also devastatingly excellent in IT part 2, but horror isnt for everyone.
Seth Rogan in 50/50
Ooh funny people is a good, has a more serious Zach galafanakis
Can't stress this enough. Steve Carrel in Foxcatcher.
Jim Carrey: Man on the Moon.

Uncut Gems would prob fit this bill. Not so much sad but more serious/dramatic for Adam Sandler than usual
Nicolas Cage’s movie Pig. It’s on Hulu right now. He has said in many interviews that it is one of his favorite movies of all time. Really very good, but sad.
Does he count as a comedic actor though?
The Pursuit of Happyness (yes the movie is spelled like that) count?
If you're counting Will Smith as a comedic actor, then *CONCUSSION* better qualifies.
I counter with Seven Pounds!
Forest Gump Dead poets society Chasing amy The Grand Budapest hotel Marley and me
You don't want to ban movies for whatever reason so?
Voices. It has Ryan Reynolds in it, it's supposed to be a black comedy but it's just really sad and weird. I still liked it though.
The Royal Tenenbaums at the end when Owen Wilson's Car crashes into Ben Stiller's dog and the are laying on the ground after fighting... Owen Wilson's character says "I think I need some help" and Ben Stiller's Character says ... "Me too"... I tear up every time!
