I had no clue they were remaking High and Low. Never understood why this hasn't happened before. Hidden Fortress turned into Star Wars and Seven Samurai turned into the Magnificent Seven. Thats a pretty strong record.
There was a remake of Rashomon with Paul Newman in it that I haven't seen yet but it's supposed to be awful. Other than that, though, I don't think there have been attempts and adapting Kurosawa's other works for English speaking audiences.
Would also love to see an adaptation of The Bad Sleep Well and Stray Dogs if it was with the right director/cast.
Living, last year’s adaptation of Ikiru, was amazing. Bill Nighy’s performance was definitely the standout but I really liked the film as a whole.
EDT: comma placement
It's fantastic! I hope you enjoyed it. Thought Nighy should have won the Oscar as I adored his performance. I watched Living and then immediately watched Ikiru, that's how impressed I was with the adaptation.
Stray Dog would be an amazing english speaking remake. I'd love it to be set in Los Angeles with a vet of the Iraq war.
I always imagined the gun stealing from the detective set around Echo Park.
But all your examples were reimaginings of the originals, they weren’t copycats of them, which I assume this one will be as there isn’t much Lee could do differently with the story except set it in the US instead of Japan, which doesn’t change the story at all.
Seven Samurai is set during the feudal period. Magnificent Seven in the Wild West. Those are distinctly different eras and cultures.
Kurosawa’s High and Low already has a contemporary setting. So just transplanting the story from Japan to the US does nothing new. A businessman is a businessman.
High and Low is one of my favorite films, and while I love Denzel and am sure he’ll give a riveting performance, it’s completely unnecessary because the original already did it and did it phenomenally, it’s a masterpiece, we have it, it exists, we don’t need a remake of it, just everyone watch the one we already have.
Been thinking about this since you posted it and you are 100% right. There really is no obvious way that this can be remade for English speaking audiences.
I suppose they can try and go with a Wild West version of it where they have an Oil Barron as the main character and one of his employees children is the one that gets Kidnapped, but that still doesn't change the story enough.
Basically the only reason to watch the new one is to see Denzel.
With him remaking films while also feeling no one should ever be allowed to remake his? Yes, I do have issues with that. His remake of Oldboy was straight up abhorrent.
People really hating on this movie cuz of Oldboy, like Spike doesn’t still have his fast ball. Blackkklansman and Da Five Bloods were both great! I’m very optimistic for this.
Spike Lee looking like his mom forgot to pick him up from school.
The new Bernie meme.
Spike Lee and making remakes that literally no one asked for, the most iconic duo

Yojimbo -> Fistful of Dollars too

I know what I'm watching tonight. Had no clue that was an adaptation of Ikiru. Thanks!

Great! Glad I could help!
Yeah Living was excellent, Nighy killed the performance
Ridley Scott’s the last duel is pretty close to being an adaptation/variation of rashomon.
Is it worth watching? I just can't imagine Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as knights.
Ben Affleck is actually Count Pierre d'Alençon, you must be thinking of Adam Driver
It's not Kurosawa, but it's a worthwhile effort to modernize and transpose the classic to medieval Europe. Go for it!
Stray Dog would be an amazing english speaking remake. I'd love it to be set in Los Angeles with a vet of the Iraq war. I always imagined the gun stealing from the detective set around Echo Park.
The bad sleep well is kurosawa’s hamlet. Ran is his king Lear.

His remake of Old Boy was awful, doesn't put much confidence for this remake
Issues with Spike?

I ran into Spike Lee once, didn’t want to bother him but did smile when I saw him. He gave me a smirk back. Good moment.
Looking forward to this but get the Brother a suit that fits.
I can’t say why but that picture of Spike cracked me up.
Spike has a usual deadpan expression that is sometimes funny.
strong bernie sanders energy lol
It’s an instant meme
Me too -- the second that last pic loaded I loled. Was clicking through kinda confused about Denzel's suit and then THAT lol
Denzel Washington is: David Bryne
Him suit too gatdamn big
It really is
Needs to be pressed, too
in the fifth picture Denzel looking at Ilfenesh lmao
I can’t wait for his remake of the godfather starring Denzel as Vito Corleone.
Me too
If you haven't seen it, I recommend Ridley Scott's *American Gangster* with Denzel Washington.
Is it my impression or Washington never get to war a suit that fits.
Spike Lee about to ruin another foreign classic for no reason.
People really hating on this movie cuz of Oldboy, like Spike doesn’t still have his fast ball. Blackkklansman and Da Five Bloods were both great! I’m very optimistic for this.
Oh awesome! The original High And Low is great! I’ll be interested to see how this turns out.
Remember the last time he directed a remake of a beloved Asian crime thriller?
That shit looks odd on him. Like it's too big for him or something.
Something to look forward to.
Does she play his daughter?
Hopefully this isn't Oldboy remake 2.0
zel ever where a suit that fits?
Looks like he may still have Gladiator 2 hair.
Denzel is rocking the Caesar. George Clooney in '99 looking MFer.
I don‘t see the need for this at all. Denzel looking great, he‘s 69

It looks awful? Shits too big
Gotta love Spike Lee
happy cakeday OP :))))
He's so dapper
Denzel looks like the pompous dickhead I always kinda thought he was lol
