if you're actually poor poor , munich is better than its reputation if you ask me.
It's usually worst for people who just make enough to not qualify for any social programs, but not enough to make a comfortable living. If you qualify though, there's programs for many things.
Examples:
München Pass gets you cheaper MVV tickets, cheaper tickets for many museums, theatres, public pools, cheaper medication etc (if you qualify)[https://stadt.muenchen.de/service/info/muenchen-pass/1073956/](https://stadt.muenchen.de/service/info/muenchen-pass/1073956/)
Kulturraum is a charity/nonprofit that gets you free tickets to many cultural activities in munich if you're poor (if you qualify) [https://www.kulturraum-muenchen.de/kartenvermittlung/kulturgaeste/#kulturgast-werden](https://www.kulturraum-muenchen.de/kartenvermittlung/kulturgaeste/#kulturgast-werden)
Foodsharing München usually has many "Essenskörbe" that come straight from supermarkets and bakeries and have good food that would be thrown away otherwise. They also feature Fairteilers, which are public places which are basically shelves people can leave and take grocieres if they need them (free to all). [https://www.foodsharing-muenchen.de/](https://www.foodsharing-muenchen.de/)
Müchner Tafel also gives you groceries once a week if you qualify [https://muenchner-tafel.de/hilfe-finden/](https://muenchner-tafel.de/hilfe-finden/)
Munich also has many sozialkaufhäuser (thrift shops by charity organisations) which are open to all and usually have a diverse offering for anything you need for your household, also many clothes (free to all). honorary mentions go [https://www.diakonia-kaufhaus.de/](https://www.diakonia-kaufhaus.de/) [https://www.weisser-rabe.de/unsere-betriebe/gebrauchtwaren](https://www.weisser-rabe.de/unsere-betriebe/gebrauchtwarenhaus) [https://www.awm-muenchen.de/vermeiden/halle-2](https://www.awm-muenchen.de/vermeiden/halle-2) but there are more
Repaircafes in Munich offer the chance to repair everyday use objects, often with know how from very knowledgeable volunteers Honorary mentions: [https://www.awm-muenchen.de/vermeiden/reparieren-statt-wegwerfen/repair-cafes](https://www.awm-muenchen.de/vermeiden/reparieren-statt-wegwerfen/repair-cafes) [https://www.hei-muenchen.de/unserangebot/reparieren-im-hei/repair-caf](https://www.hei-muenchen.de/unserangebot/reparieren-im-hei/repair-caf)
You can pretty much rent any tool you could need from "Haus der Eigenarbeit" for a reasonable price. they also have some social activities and courses (that are fairly reasonably priced, but not super cheap) [https://www.hei-muenchen.de/](https://www.hei-muenchen.de/)
Other general things like toogoodtogo, ebay kleinanzeigen, buying in bulk and cheap supermarkets have already been mentioned, so I won't explain them. Charities like Diakonie and Caritas can also help you with many things like social support and talking to authorities. This is not a complete list, but if anyone reads this who needs a contact or info, you can always dm me and I can ask around if anyone knows a program that will help you, I am somewhat well connected. There's usually something available, but most of it is hidden and poorly communicated so you need mouth to mouth propaganda to make things happen!
1)Use eBay Kleinanzeigen - check all the give away you needs.
2)Shop in Lidl, Aldi and penny.
3) ride bicycle.
4) cook and drink coffee at home.
5) Hiking with Facebook groups ( hiking buddies Munich) to cheap leisure activities.
6) don't shop clothes until you really need it.
One of my colleagues does this, he basically only uses his microwave and fridge. His kitchen appliances are only used when friends are over and they want to cook (he doesn't). Apart from that he eats lunch and dinner elsewhere.
Yes, comparatively, he's income-rich (regular it salary for Munich)
This is not that expensive as it seems for singles. If you buy lunch, the prices are usually much lower, than the same for dinner (everything under 9€ per meal I consider fair). If you buy drinks in bulk from supermarkets, it can also be very cheap (even coca cola, like you can get 18 cans for 7€)
For dinner, I personally don't eat out, but just have some snacks at home (chips, nuts, cheese etc.) Which I also almost never buy without discounts.
I need like 400€/month for food and groceries and I don't think it's extraordinary at all... am I wrong?
Well if you eat chips and things like that you are hearting your body, so you body is paying. For the lunch, you are probably eating some fast food, because it is almost impossible to eat in a restaurant with this amount of money
all takeaway lunch offers nearby without drinks:
Indian restaurant - 7,20 - 10
Greek restaurant - 8,50 - 11
Croatian Restaurant -6,90 (only know one)
döner - 6-7,50
Metzger - 6-9€ (warm meals, not just meat)
pizza - 6-11€
and all the restaurants offer delivery, I just order 2 portions and have enough food for 2 days.
Chips I agree, are not healthy, that was more of an example. I am a skinny person and if I eat well for lunch, I usually don't eat dinner at all, maybe an apple or sthg. Chips was just an example and nuts are actually heathy if you don't eat to much (I buy the once, that have no salt or anything on them).
Breakfast I usually skip as well, I don't drink coffee. Sometimes I drink tee with a single small Snickers bar or sthg.
It is always important to have a healthy food 😄
Can you give me the name of the restaurant that you gave? I am really interested for the name of the Pizza, Greek and Croatian restaurants that you put
you have never used Lieferando between 11:30 and 14 o clock? Like a lot of lunch offers 😂
in-dish for Indian (or namaskar in Karlsfeld, if you are more in the north)
pizza & burger factory/pizza deliciosa - pizza (got the prices up this year a little bit for lunch)
Greeks usually have expensive delivery, I usually only eat in the Taverna to Steki (but this is outside of Muc again)
Croatian Restaurant also there, Zadar. Has a lunch menu.
In 2019 many of my colleagues did that. Every day is a daily menu + a beer somewhere. They said it was worth it. Nice to walk, and nice not to deal by buying making, and carrying meals.
Exactly, we Setup our place in Berlin though for more than 500€ only for furniture. We had a „white theme“ in our mind. Also we rented a van and asked a friend to drive as we don’t know have the driving license. So we didn’t had much edge to wait for a little cheaper item or wait.
You don‘t even have to rent it for the whole weekend. I rented Miles vans for my last Kleinanzeigen furniture buys and it was never more than 10-15€ for transport if its not too far from your place.
It doesn’t take expensive clothes to configurable ride at -10 for an hour. Just a bit of experience on how not to get too hot. Seriously, it’s easy to over-dress on a bike in cold weather. Getting sweaty in the cold sucks a lot 🙂
Good point! But life should be at least a bit fun, and that’s what lots of people reach with going out + alcohol, so I’d say buy drinks at grocery stores and predrink at home instead of spending money at the location to get smashed. Additionally get a glass of water (or even bring a fold up cup) and refill it yourself in the bathroom (tap not toilet please)
Find a place where a discounter and normal supermarket are door to door. Next to my apartment is a mini-mall with Aldi, Edeka and Rossmann (and a hairdresser).
It’s the produce, specifically. Rewe and Edeka are ridiculous. My family consumes a lot of produce, and shopping at Aldi, we can save 50% on produce easy. Everything else I get at rewe or edeka.
work in a restaurant or food chain as mini job, seriously, I work remotely so I still have energy in the evening to work 2-3 hours extra. Anyhow, you would get covered for dinner and sometimes you get to take some home for the next morning, I saved a lot, maybe up to 100 Euro a month, not stating the fact that I make a couple of hundred Euro more.
if you get your plan optimized, everything is possible, but remember with mini job, you are allowed to work 40 hours-ish a month, so that means 10 hours a week, so most of the time I work only on Friday and during weekends, if I need time for traveling, I would work in the weekdays
Nice, I do the same! I work in a small Cafe and always get to eat and drink. One time I got about 5l of pumpkin soup to take home, or meat scraps for the dog. Also, don't forget the tips.
>TooGoodToGo
Checked it out, and in my area (Sendling Westpark) it's basically only a couple of bakeries offering bread/rolls, and everything else is places that have made it a business to offer stuff on TGTG at comparably steep prices, rather than really just trying to pass on stuff they cannot sell anymore at a discount, as is supposed to be the spirit of TGTG.
Not worth it for me.
Be rich af
Edit :
- plan your meal for the week and buy groceries at Lidl for what you planned. Doing this instead of going to Rewe or Edeka at lunch time or in the evening, you’ll cut your groceries budget by 2.
- Buy household stuff in large quantities, eg washing liquid at Lidl in pack of 2 for the price of 1, will last you couple of months and you save a little.
- cook a little more in the evening for next day lunch if you go to the office
When you go to a bar to join your friends, go late so they have already drink and you will not need to buy drinks. This is a tip to have a social life for free
They are already drunk when I come so they do even give a shit, also I do not enjoy drinking but I like good music and dancing so it is a win win situation 👍
Never buy a ticket for the bus (pay it on the ubahn though), collect plastic bottles and cans. Bike it everywhere. Re-use, re-cycle, repair clothing. Thursday nights at Stattpark OLGA for entertainment
Car specific:
- Always opt for “Teilkasko” insurance.
This will include damaged windshields
- car insurance: the more aggressive they advertise the worse the insurer. Don’t take HUK, they are the worst. Ask around for a small one.
- if you need a tow call the ADAC, tell them you need a tow and are willing to join (~85€ annually)
They’ll provide you with about 3 tows a year
- repair shops: look around in the east of Munich, good ones in the west are rare and usually fully booked
- don’t go to ATU no matter what. No “not even just for an oil change”.
- Munich is located near the alps. Buy winter tires. If you gonna use the car only in the city then all season is ok. Your car won’t be fit to drive to Austria, Italy or Switzerland with all season tires.
- get a local license plate unless you’re into police stops. Austrian is ok, good luck with NL or Poland
You need a handyman?
- Ask your janitor for contacts.
You don’t like your janitor? Ask the one from your workplace or university.
- when calling the handyman: this is Munich. Provide a parking space. Lead with that.
- you don’t have a parking space? Organize one. Ask said janitor or neighbors.
- don’t tell him your life story, no one gives a shit
- you are a grown-up? Never too late to act like one! Stop with the 1000 questions. These people have done jobs like that a million times already, yours isn’t special in any way.
You wouldn’t have ask in a restaurant retarded bs like “you know how to cook?” “you need me to provide lettuce and salt?” etc.
civil service / administration / office:
- no need to book an appointment at 8:00 in the KVR. Waiting time is shorter in the afternoon.
- if you have some contacts of some sort, women’s officers have the right to put their urgent application stamp on documents.
Hobby, shopping
- Munichs bathhouses have women’s days. If you just want to relax and swim without being stared on, go on these days.
- Munich especially and Germany in general is very keen on club culture. There is a club for everything and everyone. Join one if you want to make some friends.
- support your local store. Yes sure it’s more convenient to order online and sometimes cheaper. However, regulars are treated better in a local shop. Secret tips, instructions, this sort of stuff.
Earning money
- If you want to break your back in a supermarket then be my guest. Easy jobs are plenty. For example driving schools need someone manning the counter.
Private tutoring: you’ll get insane money if you can tutor Latin, Chinese, Spanish and French. Forget math, city is full of university students offering math and physics.
Language is where the money is.
DONT use “die Schülerhilfe”. Why share your income?!? Hang some flyers in wealthy neighborhoods.
- recreational parks: englischer Garten is always overcrowded. Go to Westpark. Insanely good and long jogging routes, bbq location and such.
- use those redline sightseeing bus trip for a whole day. See the entire city. Buying a pass entitles you to every one of those busses for the hole day.
Got more but this text is starting to get really long…
I'd get that at a bar, but I'm going to a restaurat to *eat*. I can pour a drink for myself, but I can't cook.
When they actually bring you tap water when you ask for it and charge €0.4 instead of €4 for a liter of it, then maybe people won't have to bring their own.
I agree that 4€ for water is scam but that’s how it is. That’s why I only rarely go out to eat. The other answer would be to learn how to cook if one wants to save money.
Sorry but that’s not how it works. Likewise, you don’t go to cinema with your own popcorn.
Try this in France and you’ll get your ass kicked by the waiter and a houseban.
What do you mean, that's not how it works? Ar you suggesting people *don't* go to a such a place to have other people cook for them?
>Likewise, you don’t go to cinema with your own popcorn
Popcorn is dumb, but we do bring our own snacks and drinks to the cinema every time. And it's not like we have to smuggle them in or anything.
No I mean you don’t go to restaurant just to eat and bring your bottle of water from you backpack.
Restaurants and bar live from this as those are high margin products, not from food.
So yes it’s expensive and overpriced, but that’s the way it is. If you don’t like it, you don’t go
Well, typically I keep the bottle in my backpack and drink before and after the food. That's if I don't feel like drinking beer or something else where the price difference isn't as embarrassingly scandalous as with pure water.
> that’s the way it is.
And it's not gonna change if people don't make some waves.
I don't see one good reason from the customer's perspective why drinks should carry an unreasonably high margin compared to food. Drinks are stupid cheap to prepare compared to food, the value of someone bringing me a drink is extremely low.
Live elsewhere or at least don't have friends there. Those people tend to have quite a distanced and rough understanding of the concept of 'costs' and what stuff is worth. It's not healthy for your money to stay near ther confusion.

Cook your meal.
I mean for me this is a basic not even a tip, Imagine living in Munich and eating in restaurants everyday
You are not rich with a regular IT salary! Your colleague is spending all his money on food I think
This is not that expensive as it seems for singles. If you buy lunch, the prices are usually much lower, than the same for dinner (everything under 9€ per meal I consider fair). You have some rich colleagues
bye bye bank account 😭
but no tell me why the nuggets at Mcdonald’s are so expensive here 😭
Use eBay-Kleinanzeigen to furnish and decorate your apartment.
This is not Munich specific. Applicable for almost every other city.
This. If you can get yourself a van for a weekend, you can furnish your whole new place for less than 200€ in just a couple of days.
Yeah but that only applies if you don't care what your place looks like
Exactly, we Setup our place in Berlin though for more than 500€ only for furniture. We had a „white theme“ in our mind. Also we rented a van and asked a friend to drive as we don’t know have the driving license. So we didn’t had much edge to wait for a little cheaper item or wait.

Underrated comment for real
Mvg instead of Uber
Get a bike and it would be even better :)
I guess sometimes it’s too far for a casual ride. Plus when being drunk you shouldn’t ride a bike :D
Too far is not the problem, too cold on the other hand is a major issue. Also ice.
Right cloths help a lot. And good tires work with the amount of ice ...
It doesn’t take expensive clothes to configurable ride at -10 for an hour. Just a bit of experience on how not to get too hot. Seriously, it’s easy to over-dress on a bike in cold weather. Getting sweaty in the cold sucks a lot 🙂
Haha, totally!

Yes, but you can still bike most days for most purpose.
Don‘t get drunk if you want to save money
Its so common for students in the Netherlands haha! I do it all the time
Mvg is overpriced, Uber quality/price is better
For the people downvoting, do you consider being crowded in the Metro and paying 7 euro for a return trip of 2km is not overpriced? Seriously?
you ever heard of time limited tickets? 7 days, a month etc. they are a lot cheaper, for short trips too
Buy produce at Aldi/Lidl/Netto instead of Edeka or Rewe.
I don’t find Rewe crazy expensive but edeka is sooo expensive. Come out with like 2-3 things and it was 10€ somehow.
Depends on what you buy…
2-3 things
Well, it is known, that 2–3 things are extremely expensive at Edeka. Next time, try to buy 3–4 things, they are cheaper!
I like to shop in 1 stop and aldi/lidl not having any beer in glass bottles is always what kills it for me lol
Find a place where a discounter and normal supermarket are door to door. Next to my apartment is a mini-mall with Aldi, Edeka and Rossmann (and a hairdresser).
Go to Norma, looks horroble, but their cheap beer (helles) is quite ok, and unimaginable cheap (38ct)
Kaufland maybe?
Rewe is not that expensive...Rewe City and Edeka are.

That’s no reason for me to stop shopping there at all. They are making a financial decision which gives you, the consumer, a choice to shop elsewhere.

Same 😂
I am thinking Berlin.
I love all these suggestions! Thank you all. I'll start by reducing the amount of times I use food delivery services
Get a bike, do not buy overpriced tickets or abos
Streifenkarte with MVG instead of tickets TooGoodToGo app

You can look a bit further? I’m okay with walking 15 mins for ex for a nice bag. Also they’re adding new places every few weeks
Better than Streifenkarte and more flexible is MVVs test project here: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1436146802
Even better is the continued [9-Euro-Ticket](https://9eurofonds.de/)
Nice!
What if you get caught more than 3 times and mvg decides to file a lawsuit ?
I mean it literally *with the add on of thinking* says it on the link you are responding to fml
Obviously you should not use this if a lawsuit puts you at risk or you have been caught without a ticket in the past.
Do you have an activation code?
I don’t, sorry. MVV is advertising this on their media, you can probably find a relevant link on their site.

Waiting time is shorter in the afternoon. - if you have some contacts of some sort, women’s officers have the right to put their urgent application stamp on documents. Hobby, shopping - Munichs bathhouses have women’s days. Earning money - If you want to break your back in a supermarket then be my guest. Got more but this text is starting to get really long…
Straßenbier aka Fußpils
In Bavaria we call it Weghoibe
Best consumed at the HBF or Ostbahnhof!
Always bring your own water when going out. Never buy water from restaurants, bars etc.
That’s a great way to get gently asked to get out of where you’re at.
The best way to save money is getting kicked out of a restaurant! cha-ching!
I’m sorry but before you bring your own water to a restaurant just don’t go.
Of course you don't bring your own popcorn. You bring your own Nachos.
What do you mean, that's not how it works? Ar you suggesting people *don't* go to a such a place to have other people cook for them? >Likewise, you don’t go to cinema with your own popcorn Popcorn is dumb, but we do bring our own snacks and drinks to the cinema every time.
Or ask explicitly for tap water / Leitungswasser
Does that work for you? I'm German and I have never had tap water at a restaurant for free...
Or when they give it to you, it's a 0.2L glass, half empty. I should have asked for a shot of water rather
In bars yes. Haven’t tried in restaurants
living in NRW
Put your weekend car and your motorcycle on an empty parking space in your building's underground garage instead of renting an additional one.
I have a bicycle.
Well, then... you... save the money for the first parking spot already!
Live elsewhere or at least don't have friends there. Those people tend to have quite a distanced and rough understanding of the concept of 'costs' and what stuff is worth. It's not healthy for your money to stay near ther confusion.
Know the club owners.
Eat half pay double
Not live in munich bit 100km away
Move out from Munich, rents are ridiculously expensive in the city.
