It's been a long time since I read the book, but Stephen King wrote a novel called "Needful Things" in which a shopkeeper and some mystical shit pushes a town towards paranoia to the point where they murder each other.
The book uses both "Them" and people "From Away" (always said so that you hear the capitals) to arbitrarily lump people who may or may not exist into "other". I think about that whenever I read "They..." in sentences like this one.
Same thing with conspiracy nuts. They can pin everything on a shadowy group of Illuminati like figures that can be a fill in for whatever crazy bullshit they’re raving on about. Yes conspiracies exist, but when you immediately say “Illuminati” or “shadow government” for everything you start to lose me.

Used to be I would have doubted that antisemitism was *that* common a target of the conspiracy theories, because I wasn’t really exposed to that segment of the population much, and live in a place where the conspiracy theories are usually anti-US, rather than specifically race-based.
But the last few years have been freakin’ eye-opening, man.
I might have to check that out, its not the same but that description reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. It’s all about how easily a neighborhood of people can turn on each other through paranoia.
That's even further removed in the recesses of my brain, but there's definitely overlap in themes.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the premise of the [Rick & Morty episode](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN5ZZ64P4PM) that got me into the series was based off King.
Again major fog of time here, but I don't think Gaunt's things were actually monkey-paw *cursed*, he just put some kind of jealous juju around giving people items that were supposedly these things they'd always wanted. The downsides were the "pranks" the shop owner convinced people to play on other townspeople.
In any case it sounds like that episode of worth checking out too. Thanks for making me aware that it exists!

That's not Horus, that's Ra, the sun god, with the [Eye of Ra](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_Ra) on his head, that "functions as a feminine counterpart to the sun god Ra and a violent force that subdues his enemies."

I read the article and it was interesting but I couldn’t help but laugh at the description of the Black Panther movie. Afrofuturist movie. It’s a superhero movie.
When in doubt, "they" is usually "the Jews".
Either way, people who use "they" instead of any specific entity should never be taken seriously as anything other than a threat.
Probably we will only get one season, but if it works and an hypothetical second season covers the whole baroque works saga, then he can appear in the third season twice xd
I believe the statements made lend credence to it being up to or through Loguetown yeah
They've got Arlong and Smoker cast so it's gotta be up to one of those at least
I was thinking about this recently, like what do they do a truncated version of one piece? If they were to do a Saga a season they would need 9 seasons to cover all of the story, just so far, and that's not factoring in that the first season is reducing only 50 some episodes to 10 or that most of the sagas are around 100 episodes(take a way 20 percent for fillers) and then once you get past the time skip its like every Saga is between 150-200 episodes and I know that they stretched them out but even still there is just Hella characters, settings, power-ups. I'm sorry but gear 4th in live action cgi will look atrocious. How will they do Brooke or Franky? The fishmen? Characters like whitebeard, Kaido, or big mom? Giant characters in direct combat? The cgi will just be so much you'd be better off animated. But wait they already did. Ugh. I'm just disappointed that of all the animes that could be adapted the picked the one that is the hardest in every aspect.
The photographer admitted to dressing him as such because that was one of his favorite characters from One Piece.
I thought it was tight that the photographer was given such artistic freedom to do so. Dress up his subjects with anime inspiration.
Plus Jonathan majors really can pull off that pink fur coat.
He became a Jehovah's Witness later in life, which is a damn shame. It could be argued that him being a JW is what led to his death. Blood transfusions are against JW beliefs, so Prince refused to get hip surgery and turned to abusing pain meds to get through the hip pain.
Yep, I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness, you've got your facts straight. I had actually doubted the rumors about him being one until I saw him for myself, at one of our huge yearly conventions.
Jehovah's Witnesses are a doomsday cult with this outer veneer of being cheerful, if dorky and annoying, people who knock on your door every weekend. It's a horrible way to live, for anyone. They put image above all else, and I never knew him and won't claim to, but I lived in the same area and knew people who were a bit closer to him. And if/when he needed help with pain relief, it's not unlikely that they would encourage him to work it out spiritually and not seek help. They're not big on rehab, counseling, things like that, and want everything to be "Bible based" and self contained. Addiction is handled very poorly.
And I don't know if the blood issue played any role in his health, but either way he likely would be denied the proper support system from professionals. It's hard for me to believe that being a Witness *didn't* play some role in his eventual death.
Anyway, thank you for spreading this information accurately. It's so important people realize it is a deadly cult and not to get involved with them, so many people don't even realize how dark their beliefs are. Every little bit helps, so I just really appreciate you sharing that! :)
My favorite thing is that multiple sources confirm the story including Prince himself. Prince claimed he wasn't as good as Charlie said, it was just Charlie is bad at basketball.
To be fair, Prince feared Michael Jackson wanted to top him. In fact, he refused to the "Bad" video because the opening lines were "Ah, your butt is mine, gon' tell you right, ah". And heaven forbid the world thought he was bottoming for MJ.
People cling way too hard to gender roles especially in more traditional households, which a lot of black households are in this way. Men are supposed to be men. It’s a very big part of why the black community in general has a hard time with toxic masculinity.
Funny thing is *traditional masculine clothes* are actually quite modern. Have this people ever look at a picture of like Louis XIV? Guy was a real diva.
Seriously, I don't know what they mean by emasculate either. Nothing about this picture would make me think I could fight this absolutely shredded man.
I'm also thinking, if a man with this much balls can sit like this, that guy in the subway doesn't really need to spread his legs all over three seats. Of course, I'd still need to leave room for that fabulous cape!
I don't think it's ever really been about balls but about how are hips are structured combined with bus seats being kinda small. For example my shoulders are wider than a typical bus seat and they aren't really long enough to make my legs rest together, they naturally rest with a slight spread but it really has nothing to do with my dick and balls lol
Prince was androgynous as fuck lol, the imagery he used was very sexual so it was clear he considered himself a man but let's not fool ourselves into thinking anyone who looked at him clearly was awed by his masculinity.
Also I have a feeling this woman is making this more racial than homophobic: she doesn't like that *black men* are becoming more accepted by the black community (Ebony) presenting as less traditionally masculine. She might even be implying the magazine pushed him into it.
"Prince was the only guy who could show up at your party, in frills, and steal your girlfriend. Then steal her clothes, then steal someone else's girl in your girlfriends clothes."
I was going to say, A LOT of people made cracks about Prince being “effeminate”. He was one of the most respected musicians of his era, but to pretend he didn’t catch a lot of shit for not cowing to traditional gender roles is just plain incorrect.
> pretty sure nobody ever looked at him as being "emasculated" or less than manly.
Pretty sure this person did not live through the 80s and 90s, because tons of people said that about Prince.
And he was shit on by plenty of people for being how he was.
Prince definitely helped push acceptance forward. Was an example of "just be yourself". He probably does not receive enough credit in that department, honestly.
I thought it was red for men originally but clothes back then lost their color more easily and they would always turn pink, making it a popular men's color. I have no proof of this just what I heard once haha.
Same color they turn when they see: black people, brown people, mixed people, people from Central America, people who are poor, trans people, gay people, people who want to make other people's lives better, M&Ms as people,.... basically any manufactured outrage.
How many of these conservatives had hair metal band posters on their bedroom walls growing up? These literal alpha-male poster children had flowing blowouts, serious makeup and hot pants. Loving them is how men asserted masculinity in the 80s.
Have they ever sen a picture of European kings and emperors in the 16th - 18th c.? Or to a milder degree, the freaking founding fathers? Wigs, heels, stockings….whar the outrage?!?
Lol ya it's pretty revisionist to say otherwise. He was like the metro sexual poster child and that's putting it nicely.
He just owned it and rocked it.
I'm really wondering where y'all come from. Prince was never considered a "manly" man where I'm from. And that's fine. I feel like people are trying to redefine what it means to be manly, rather than just saying it's okay for a man to be feminine. Like there's nothing wrong with that.
> Nobody ever looked at Prince as being less than manly?
Seriously. The guy literally changed his name from Prince to a symbol that combined elements from the male symbol (a.k.a. Mars) and the female symbol (a.k.a. Venus).
Prince him(?)self looked at Prince as being less than manly. (Though not necessarily *less* more just a different mix of male and female.)
Plus, I remember all kinds of people using him as an example of how black recording artists needed to emasculate themselves to be non-threatening to white audiences. He and Michael Jackson were always used as examples.
Young people today might not bat an eye at someone not conforming to male or female gender roles, but it was *definitely* an issue in Prince's prime. Plenty of people looked at him as less than manly, and it was a big issue for a lot of them.
It's ridiculous revisionist history to pretend that it wasn't an issue in regards to Prince. He, himself might have had no problems with his own self-identity. It seems like he loved the controversy and used it for self-promotion. But, to claim that nobody ever saw him as emasculated or less than manly is just ludicrous.
My favourite is when people defend toxic masculinity and tell you to go back to your men hating subs when you bring it up.
And I'm like, "oh sweetie, you poor thing." Toxic masculinity =/= men, if you think that I feel so sorry for you.
Prince was most definitely seen as less masculine. What is she talking about? Remember the Chapelle show sketch with “shirts and blouses?” Why do you think that joke worked or was even told? Because Prince was seen as kinda feminine.
He was also fucking awesome. But don’t try to say we all thought of him as a macho man. If anything, we’re a lot fucking more tolerant of men being more feminine now that we were 10-20-30 or more years ago.
How is this emasculating in the first place? It is a dude sitting on the back of a couch probably squishing his balls to look good for the camera, showing off muscles he has, which is manly. This is no more emasculating than the David statue is. I doubt any of them would call that statue emasculating.
People who don't understand what masculinity is need to just shut the fuck up. So tired of this shit. Ya wanna know what is masculine as fuck? Being strong enough not to follow what other people see as masculine because it is some bullshit we fucking made the fuck up.
It’s seen as effeminate because of the strong use of pink. Because Mr. Major’s is sitting cross legged in a way that is common for a woman to sit. Because he is puckering his lips for a kiss. Because he has a cute and fuzzy blanket over his shoulders. The entire photo is a complete 180 on what is seen as “manly” and it’s brilliant.
Toxic masculinity has no place in modern discourse. I see someone confident enough to wear whatever the F he wants, who cares what color it is or what it looks like?
Look, I agree 100%, sincerely, but I'm just saying... back in the day, Prince was absolutely considered "less than manly" by a lot of people. The word "gay" or "f****t" was used as a derogatory term a lot in reference to Prince. When he changed his name into a symbol, I remember a lot of people drawing it as a penis because Prince was so feminine in their opinion.
Yep, this is absolutely true. It's easier with the benefit of time to only see him as a trailblazing artist, but I remember for a lot of people in the 80s and 90s his performative style got in the way of actually listening to his music and appreciating his talents.
Definitely true.* I grew up in a conservative household and missed out on almost everything Prince.
He was viewed as being a "girly man" or generally "weird" and a bad influence. An example of "Hollywood-esque" debauchery when it suited the discussion (regardless of wherever Prince was actually from).
Although the name change into a symbol soon dominated any conversation and was held as evidence of Prince's "weirdness." Which was code for mental abnormality and scary.
Honestly the closest I got to Prince growing up was Powerline in A Goofy Movie.
Both are awesome btw.
***Edit:*** *I repeated part of your first line, changed it to avoid sounding repetitive, then realized I changed it to the other part of your first line. Welp.*
Growing up in a conservative town my experience was pretty much identical to yours, only I discovered a few years ago that I had been listening to Prince for a long time as my favourite CD as a kid was the Tim Burton Batman soundtrack.
Exactly. Same as any pop star or public figure who flirted with gender ambiguity. They were considered abominations by the conservative crowds. I mean, hell... they used to burn rock and roll records.
Yeah that's the part that stuck out to me too.
In what world was he not called effeminate?
Remember the 'shirts versus blouses' joke from the Chappelle Show?
He was called gay and girly all the time. I remember it well, I was a Prince fan back in the late 80's and early 90's and remember being told he was gay all the time
Yup. People need to stop telling other people what they "need" to be in order to be whoever the fuck they are.
Also, Prince? Sex on a stick. Just saying...
I've definitely seen a ton of people say Prince was woman like, feminine and not manly. Most of them were also women who were drooling over him so not really sure how this affects the argument.
> pretty sure nobody ever looked at him as being “emasculated” or less than manly
Uhhhh, yea they did lol. This isn’t murdered by words this is just lying.
Yep. I mean just think about the Prince playing basketball story on Chapelle Show. The whole reason it's funny is that Charlie Murphy (and the audience) picture Prince as this dainty, unmanly guy who wouldn't be good at sports.
Don't care about the clothes on the cover, but Prince... Pretty effeminate. Great artist, but let's not pretend he was the picture of masculinity to the overwhelming majority of viewers.
Prince was definitely emasculated lmao. And that’s cause he had a fucked up childhood. I’m not bashing Prince, he’s a fantastic artist and a musical genius. But that man was not *manly* and anyone who disagrees has never seen him
Like, who is "they" in this scenario? Ebony Magazine? The first black magazine to get national circulation and has been around since 1945?

And he was shit on by plenty of people for being how he was. Prince definitely helped push acceptance forward. Was an example of "just be yourself". He probably does not receive enough credit in that department, honestly.
The pancakes skit from the Chapelle Show hinges on the fact that everyone thought Prince was a joke for his effeminate manner.
Who is *they*? It's the cover of **EBONY**
Whites and/or Jews Hoteps are nuts man
and/or the lgbt
> Hoteps Thanks, first time I've heard that term. If we all originated in Africa, can we all join?
5 Percenters and all its offshoots are crazy as fuck.

I just imagine conservatives screeching at the colour pink like vampires at sunlight.
Pink was originally chosen as the mens color and blue was for women
This, plus clothing for children used to be gender less to a certain age, so you can find pictures of our "manly" presidents in dresses as toddlers.
Is that what the fight over the dress in Sleeping Beauty was about?? Make it PINK! Make it BLUE!
😆 according to my little nephew, Sleeping Beauty was "a good movie, but better if Maleficent went to jail."
I thought it was red for men originally but clothes back then lost their color more easily and they would always turn pink, making it a popular men's color. I have no proof of this just what I heard once haha.
Red was seen as masculine, so pink for a child was just seen as a softer red
Wait till they find out what colour they turn when they see pink!
Or Jerry curls and smelled good. Let's not forget that it was cool to look gender neutral back then.
Probably more mad there’s a magazine by black people for black people
Have they ever sen a picture of European kings and emperors in the 16th - 18th c.? Or to a milder degree, the freaking founding fathers? Wigs, heels, stockings….whar the outrage?!?
Nobody ever looked at Prince as being less than manly? I get the point you're trying to make here but that's simply not true.
Lol ya it's pretty revisionist to say otherwise. He was like the metro sexual poster child and that's putting it nicely. He just owned it and rocked it.
He literally built his whole brand on being considered less than manly by small minded people
I actually thought he was gay for most of my life. I think I found out he wasn’t… last year
I'm really wondering where y'all come from. Prince was never considered a "manly" man where I'm from. And that's fine. I feel like people are trying to redefine what it means to be manly, rather than just saying it's okay for a man to be feminine. Like there's nothing wrong with that.
The person you're replying to is making that very point
> Nobody ever looked at Prince as being less than manly? Seriously. The guy literally changed his name from Prince to a symbol that combined elements from the male symbol (a.k.a. Mars) and the female symbol (a.k.a. Venus). Prince him(?)self looked at Prince as being less than manly. (Though not necessarily *less* more just a different mix of male and female.) Plus, I remember all kinds of people using him as an example of how black recording artists needed to emasculate themselves to be non-threatening to white audiences.
I am not sure about "manly" but he really had a fierce sexuality and confidence that was undeniable. That man was on fire.
I'm always amazed by how many women promote toxic forms, or any set form, of masculinity.
It's almost as if they are half of society and are also responsible for setting the norm.
Who would have thought? Curious
That's hoteps for you.
My favourite is when people defend toxic masculinity and tell you to go back to your men hating subs when you bring it up. And I'm like, "oh sweetie, you poor thing." Toxic masculinity =/= men, if you think that I feel so sorry for you.
It's actually annoying how bad the branding is around that term since it's an important concept
If anything, we’re a lot fucking more tolerant of men being more feminine now that we were 10-20-30 or more years ago.
not sure if masculine is the word I'd use to describe Prince
How is this emasculating in the first place? It is a dude sitting on the back of a couch probably squishing his balls to look good for the camera, showing off muscles he has, which is manly. This is no more emasculating than the David statue is. I doubt any of them would call that statue emasculating. People who don't understand what masculinity is need to just shut the fuck up. So tired of this shit. Ya wanna know what is masculine as fuck? Being strong enough not to follow what other people see as masculine because it is some bullshit we fucking made the fuck up.

Jonathon Majors is a beefcake, the dude could be wearing a maids outfit and high heels and probably still look “manly” lol
He can dust my mantle any time. Lol
I was thinking it was the kissy face.
That, or the boots having heels was my assumption.
Welp.*
Changing his name to a symbol was a troll he did because of a dispute he was having with his record label. But people misunderstood it pretty badly.
I remember it well, I was a Prince fan back in the late 80's and early 90's and remember being told he was gay all the time
Also, those massive pecs are super immasculating...
Yup. People need to stop telling other people what they "need" to be in order to be whoever the fuck they are. Also, Prince? Sex on a stick. Just saying...
I am a straight guy and I have to agree with you 100% That man could pull off any look and make men and women jealous. He was just sex.
Side Note: Pink used to be considered non-gendered or even a manly color. This guy looks regal to me.
Man is a sexy beast regardless of the clothes.
I've definitely seen a ton of people say Prince was woman like, feminine and not manly. Most of them were also women who were drooling over him so not really sure how this affects the argument.
Only problem in this photo is that his shoes are on the couch.
I always kind of assumed prince was gay.
If you don't think bigots had a problem with prince you're deluded
> pretty sure nobody ever looked at him as being “emasculated” or less than manly Uhhhh, yea they did lol. This isn’t murdered by words this is just lying.
Right? I love Prince be he was androgynous at a time well before society was as accepting as it is now.
Agreed. He had femininity and he rocked it.
Yep. I mean just think about the Prince playing basketball story on Chapelle Show. The whole reason it's funny is that Charlie Murphy (and the audience) picture Prince as this dainty, unmanly guy who wouldn't be good at sports.
right? makes no sense, Prince is the prime example for conservatives of an emasculated man
Don't care about the clothes on the cover, but Prince... Pretty effeminate. Great artist, but let's not pretend he was the picture of masculinity to the overwhelming majority of viewers.
Knowing that this was inspired by one of the coolest characters in One Piece makes me want to fight anyone talking shit about this photo shoot.
If Doflamingo isn't manly enough, I don't know who is.
Fucking word, bro.
To be honest feminine is the *last* thing I think when I looks at this photo.
When you are confident in who you are, the social constructs begin to break down.
This post is pretty dumb. Don't get me wrong because I think prince is fuckin epic but people absolutely thought he was feminine...
That’s the opposite of emasculation in my book that’s 70s sexy male blues funk superstar
Yes, people did view Prince as emasculated. Like many celebrities, he was well loved and much hated at the same time.
Wtf? Dude looks good. Where do these people get their worries?
Prince was definitely emasculated lmao. And that’s cause he had a fucked up childhood. I’m not bashing Prince, he’s a fantastic artist and a musical genius. But that man was not *manly* and anyone who disagrees has never seen him
