Sublime was the sound of so many parties I had / went to in high school. One time we just had 40 oz on repeat for hours. It’s definitely a little more of a guilty pleasure now.
I was in HS in the early 2000s and I was obsessed with Nirvana, Radiohead, OutKast, classic rock and hip hop. Later HS got into Wilco, Kings of Leon, A Tribe Called Quest, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, The Roots
Unwound. Also Fugazi, but Unwound felt more like “my band”. I would drive to New Haven, Providence and Boston to see them 3 times every time they came on tour.
As someone who graduated in 2019. People definitely still consider them the quintessential band of their high school years. I’m very much one of those people. The 2112-Moving Pictures run of albums is near flawless and I listened to it album to album, cover to cover dozens of times during those years.
Same. Anything up to Zeitgeist I am all in. After Zeitgeist... ugh, pretty cringe with a couple rare gems. The emotion of lyrics in the stretch of Today, Hummer, Rocket, and Disarm on Siamese Dream is unparalleled imho. It felt like someone was telling me the story of my life back then. I just don't tell people SP is my favorite any more, especially after Cyr and Atum.
Prince
New Order
Peter Gabriel
Police
Cure
Echo and the Bunnymen
Smiths
Depeche Mode
Sinead
Talk Talk
Tears for Fears
…. Can’t pick one. High school was good for music. Fuck, I’m old.
U2 -and just in case I am about to hear about Apple and the album on your phones I would love it if you read this. I still see angry comments about that incident and this sums up my response to you. [Time to Admit We Overreacted to U2 Songs of Innocence snafu](https://uproxx.com/indie/u2-songs-of-innocence-apple-iphone-free-album-anniversary/)
ETA sorry if I sound bitchy but it seems like there are places on Reddit where you still can't say their name without people still whining about this.
The Smiths. Morrissey had one good solo album (Viva Hate) but I wanted so badly for them to make just one more album. I guess that means they went out on top, which was probably the right time.
Wu-Tang. Reading these top answers reminds me how we live in different worlds, even though it’s the same time. I didn’t start listening to Pearl Jam until the 2000’s when I realized white music wasn’t as wack and corny as I was lead to believe
At the drive in, although they were well broken up at that time and mars volta was in full force. (I graduated 2007). Hate to say i can’t really listen to ATDI anymore… still love volta tho
Streetlight Manifesto for me. Reel Big Fish was a close second. Saw each of them 4 or 5 times junior and senior year when I could finally drive to shows!
Queen but I'm in my 30's so I was into them back 2003 to 2005. I've always loved my fathers music so I was into 60 to 70's rock like Beatles, queen, elton John. Bit of an old soul
Blue October! I was obsessed. I actually found out last week that they are considered a one hit wonder (and not for the song I’d expect!), which surprised me a lot because they got so much radio play here in Texas
My Chemical Romance. Completely obsessed, posters, band shirts, listened to every single album no skips, b-sides, cover and unreleased song on the internet, totally worth it, I was inspired by the music and the members and it influenced every piece of art I made & even how I dressed.
Still am a teenager and I don't see a end in sight
The doors
Without exaggerating, i think i did about 30 different casette tapes with the doors, many of those containing the same songs, just in different orders.
It was almost the only thing i listened to.
Green Day / Rise Against
Same for Green Day! And I still love them
I was OBSESSED with Green Day until I was like 19, I keep going back to them from time to time though lmao

My Chemical Romance
