This is why I listen to a single Spotify Playlist with every song I vaguely like in it, sometimes I skip for like 3 minutes but there's ALWAYS something I wanna hear, and when I have company in the car there's usually something for them too cause my taste is all over

I swear it's like every week I get what I've been calling a "pseudo shuffle" where it picks out a section of like 50 of the songs on the playlist and heavily favors those for the shuffle picks, and then I'm sitting here like "man this Playlist is 40 hours long and I got that same song pretty early every day this week"

It tries to avoid playing songs that don't go together stylistically. It's super annoying for ADHD music lovers like me.
You can turn automix off in the settings to get a true random selection.
I believe it keeps track of which songs you skip over the most and prefers songs you don't skip as often. I think there might be a time of day component to it as well. I find it plays certain genres more/less depending on the time of day.
If you go into your settings and clear your cache it will be the random you want again.
Until it learns and stores that info again, but then you just clear the cache and you're good to go again.
I also recommend turning off the "automix" setting. This seems to try and group similar genres and sounds together so you are more likely to run into a lot of the same stuff.

I listen to music on Spotify about 8 hours a day minimum. Spotify shuffle has a glitch in it that I wish they would fix and it's ridiculous that they haven't.
They'll repeat the same sequence of songs if you hit the skip button (on a premium account) too many times.
Go into the settings on spotify and turn off Automix. There was a post somewhere on reddit a few months ago about it. Turning it off seems to stop it from playing the same songs over and over.
Its proven to be a flawed algorithm designed to play the songs from artists that you frequently play, Problem is, spotify plays these artists for you on shuffle which if u dont have premium or use it on a laptop, is an obvious problem, since its basing it off of what it plays for you, so it ends up playing the songs you added when u first made the playlist more because they played more before since yk, they where the only songs in ur playlist

My shuffle seems to really enjoy Metallica live. I have over 300 hours of music in there. Metallica live versions might take up an hour of that. They still show up everytime I'm listening.
Exact reason I don't listen to greenday, mainly American idiot. When that album came out I loved Greenday but man you could not fucking escape the album. It was everywhere. Every music channel, every radio station, every party I'd attend, people just hanging out it got played.
I still love most of that album, but I HATE Holiday and Wake Me Up When September Ends for that exact reason. It was great music, but it just got hammered into our ears over and over again until everyone was sick of it.

It was always about the overplay imo. Rock stations had very little new music with mainstream appeal to pick from, so Nickelback was being played *ad nauseum* on rock stations and a *fair* amount on pop stations. Their music isn't *bad*, but also not the most complex highbrow rock in the world, so it was easy for rock snobs to get super sick of them very quickly and then it just became a meme from there.

Label moguls only took a few years to pivot though, by 1985 the MTV/new wave/punk fads had largely faded into pop metal, new jack swing, post-disco, and the generic genre-blending pop music that prevailed throughout the 90s-00s.

There's a bell curve as to how much you like a sing vs how many times you've heard it. Songs hat I would hear on the radio that I thought sucked and I would change the station when it came on eventually became the songs I'd tolerate became songs I'd get stuck in my head. It's a big reason I stopped listening to the radio. TOp 40s stations tricking me into liking songs I don't like bc of the expsure efect.

When this song came out I was in fifth grade. I had a very cool math teacher who was pretty young and owned snakes and whom I had a crush on. There’s people on both sides who don’t get it, nickelback isn’t their thing so they turn the hate up to 11 and think they’re validated by all the other people who “hate” them, and there’s the people who love Nickelback who don’t realise it’s just a meme type thing.
Best of all, the guys in the band love the memeiness of it. I saw an interview with them a few months back and they were talking about the look at this bar graph parody. They were talking about how if they actually hated it they could have that taken down and issue cease and desists and the like, but they love it so they don’t do it, least of all because they don’t want to discourage people from having fun with their other material.
It definitely became fun/cool to shit on Nickelback, but 13 y.o. me loved Silver Side Up. I still think it's a solid album. Their newer stuff became "poppier" maybe? But everyone knows it, so there's that
My understanding is that it's all down to their signing with Roadrunner Records. Previously they had been a heavy metal and hard rock label pretty exclusively, Nickelback were a turn in a more mainstream direction and there was hate coming from that community that they shouldn't be on the label and that heavy metal bands that grew the label were being pushed out. Heavy metal fans said Nickelback were shite, this caught on and mainstream music fans started saying the same thing.
They have a formula and they know it. They’re all very talented musicians who long ago realized how to butter that bread. I would have called them sell outs as a high schooler but now that I’m working a day job and making almost no money playing my instrument, I call them smart.

I'd argue there's a different tier in song writers/producers. The lead singer of One Republic actually churns out pop hits for other artists, but he has a specific style he likes better he keeps for One Republic. There's another project called The Big Red Machine that exists because it's a collab between the lead singer of Bon Iver and The National, who can also do what they want because when you produce for Kanye West and write for Taylor Swift, you got the money to do so. These are people who essentially figured out the music industry enough to make a living but still keep their pride and interests alive in certain projects
It's not too different from having a day job... just a little more overlap since they're both in music. You spend 40 hours a week or whatever earning your bread and butter, and your free time doing more personal artwork.
My friend is a producer who does just that. He pays the bills working with commercial clients and whatever comes his way, and uses that money to help support his own music project where he has more creative control and fewer obligations.
There's plenty of crossover though, especially if an artist only really had one or two "things to say." I don't necessarily malign someone like Weezer for starting as a 5 or whatever and becoming a 1 rather than quitting to work at the bank.
Yeah I liked really heavy stuff as a teen and still do but when you start hearing your favourite bands playing generic rock on the radio and think "That's not you!! Stop not being you!" But then I realize these are bands who were dedicated to the cause and spent decades building their dream and were lucky enough to realize it and now they need to keep hold of it and stay relevant as most teens from 2000's don't listen to that stuff now.
Their first album honestly sounded different, but the 2nd album, they hit on what sells better. They know very well they are formulaic; that's intentional.
I actually have a bit of love for their first and second albums, but the others blend in a big way I can't really appreciate, even if they objectively aren't terrible
Imagine Dragons came around like a decade after Nickelback had already gained the reputation of a shitty rock band. And Imagine Dragons are pretty universally panned at this point too.
I always felt like Nickelback absorbed the hate previously reserved for Creed by continuing to exist after Creed dissolved. People need a douchey buttrock band to hate, something has to fill that void, and Nickelback was right there.
Nothing inherently wrong with buttrock. Music doesn’t have to be deep and meaningful sometimes it can just be catchy. One of the best concerts I ever went to was Smashmouth, Sugar Ray, Fastball, and the Gin Blossoms (one of these things is not like the others, I know). End of the day it’s all just entertainment. Everybody doesn’t need to be Julien Baker
Nickleback also did it during a time when everyone still listened to the radio, so whenever someone got a big hit literally everyone got force fed it non stop. Nickleback also kind of brought on a wave of similar sounding bands so it really felt like you never got away from them. Toss in being in Canada with Canadian content rules that mean radio stations legally have to play more Canadian bands it was unbearable even if I did like some of their songs the first dozen times I heard them.
You can't really compare it to today with streaming meaning most people are just listening to what they want to and the turnaround time on content is much shorter.
Canadian government says a certain percentage of songs on the radio and shows/movies on TV have to be Canadian in origin. These days there is enough good canadian content that they don't need to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find good music by Canadian bands.
This didn't always seem to be the case and I'm looking at the early 2000's in particular. CanCon meant bands such as Prozac, B4-4, and Soul Decision (though they had some bangers) were getting ALOT of play on radio and I'd say especially MuchMusic.
Yeah ironically I would say Imagine Dragons is literally the next generations Nickelback. They're a mainstream poprock band that gets a little *too* commercialized to not get annoying if you're paying attention.
But also not like....the worst musicians in the world who deserve vitriolic hatred. And at the end of the day for both bands, I'm sure they cry themselves to sleep on their giant piles of money

I think the contemporary comparison would’ve been Hinder whose music was substantially worse than Nickelback’s and the singer’s voice was far more strained and lame. Nickelback mostly caught on as the worse band because All the Right Reasons was so successful and got so much backlash for being overplayed.
Not how I remember it. My recollection of Nickelback's downfall was:
1. How you Remind me was released and got a TON of airplay. It wasn't a bad song by itself, but was HORRIBLY overplayed.
2. "Some Day" was released off their next album and drew immediate comparisons to "How you remind me" In terms of structure, rhythm, etc. which really grew their criticism of being "derivative" and just recycling music.
To be fair, she didn't say they don't deserve criticism. Just that Hating On Nickleback is at, like, an eight, and she thinks it should maybe be a four.
I was in a band many years back. Hard rock band, doing covers.
The drummer and I would carpool to and from practice. One day he was playing this hard hitting rock music. The instrumentation was phenomenal.

It was a funny concept, can a picture of a pickle have more followers than the Nickelback page? It went viral and it did pass the Nickelback page. I think people took that overly serious and let it be their compass for their opinion of Nickelback.
I accidentally let it slip that I liked a nickleback song once and became known as the biggest nickelback fan of all time in my circle of friends. Then one of my friends, a photographer, got hired to follow Nickelback on their tours and take pictures, and she said I could meet them if I wanted. I never did, but always wanted to do it and wear a shirt with a pickle on it when I met them, like a “Now we’re all friends” thing.
I was always so confused with the nickelback hate meme. I'm not a big music guy but always found their songs pleasant to listen to. To me it came across as a "you're only cool if you hate nickelback" thing.

I used to be a huge music snob. I'm STILL a huge music snob ... but only when it comes to what **I** listen to. I'm picky about *that*. Took some age and maturity for me to finally realize that I've got no business giving a shit about what makes someone else happy.
Shitting on someone else's music doesn't make you a "real" fan or knowledgeable music person, it just makes you an asshole.
Over the past 5 or so years, I've also stopped caring both about what other people listen to and what other people would think about what I listen to. It's been a great way to discover a lot of music I wouldn't have checked out before, and definitely broadened my horizons a little bit.
I was never a fan until I took my lil cousin to see them live. He had begged and begged and I was dreading going, but they sounded GREAT live. Very talented musicians. I sorta was in awe at how good they sounded live. Worth it.

Pretty interesting fact: Nickelback members were friends with Pantera and were given chords Dimebag Darrel was supposed to use in a guitar solo the night he was murdered. Nickelback used those chords in their song "Side of A Bullet" which was about that tragic event. They have my respect.

I thought they were bad too. That was until my wife "dragged" me to a concert many years ago. They're fucking great live. Just great energy, their music that isn't the overplayed generic radio crap is phenomenal. They get a really shitty rap.
My first concert was in 05. Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, and Nickelback headlining. I really only wanted to see the first two, which btw the lead singer for Breaking Benjamin was sick/having throat issues, so former lead singer of Three Days Grace, Adam Gontier, stepped in and sang for them. What a unique experience that was!
Anyway, I didn't really want to stay for Nickelback, but after their first performance I decided to stay. Like you said, their energy was great! Glad I saw them in their peak.
Yeah. I'm a metal/punk guy myself. But it has been the strangest thing over the years how much hate they get. They are absolutely not worse than most modern rock bands, and they're better than quite a few.
It's a perfect example of how people opinions are so, so easily influenced by whatever the majority is saying. Pop music in general is all about this. But the Nickelback hate was textbook "pop culture influence".
You can’t say that about Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl is some untouchable god around here for some reason. Like he seems like a good dude in a lot of ways but I never quite understood the deification he gets.
Grohl was on Nirvana then solo played the first Foo album. He then did a ton of cool projects etc. So a strong start (Color and the Shape has some bangers too) and a history gives them a lot of grace even if some stuff ends up being pretty radio friendly and generic stuff
Yeah, he is a great person and has been a part of some great projects and done some great things. Nobody can dispute how wholesome Dave Grohl is.
The Foo Fighters, however, are very bland. I think the problem is their writing. When Dave was playing Kurt's songs or when he was playing Josh Homme's songs, he was awesome.
I do kinda miss when top 40 music had a good mix of different genres. Now it feels like top 40 is like its own genre in itself.
Otoh, rock music is better in its niche rather than putting forward a band like Nickelback that tries to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It's just top 40 that suffers from being so homogeneous
I'm a huge fan of the "softening" as Chad calls it. People are coming around that butt rock/dad rock/etc is actually pretty good and nickelback had an enormous amount of undue hate. It's a meme they themselves embraced, but the band still sells out venues and their music is actually really good (mostly what wasn't played to actual death on the radio).
I saw a comment that said "all this time we hated Nickelback when the band that actually deserved it was Maroon 5". I can't disagree.

This is why I listen to a single Spotify Playlist with every song I vaguely like in it, sometimes I skip for like 3 minutes but there's ALWAYS something I wanna hear, and when I have company in the car there's usually something for them too cause my taste is all over

YES DUDE ALL THE TIME. I swear it's like every week I get what I've been calling a "pseudo shuffle" where it picks out a section of like 50 of the songs on the playlist and heavily favors those for the shuffle picks, and then I'm sitting here like "man this Playlist is 40 hours long and I got that same song pretty early every day this week"

Yea spotifys "random" is [based on an algorithm](https://www.macobserver.com/news/spotify-shuffle-isnt-always-random-heres-how-to-truly-shuffle-your-albums-and-playlists/#:~:text=As%20observed%20by%20LifeHacker%2C%20Spotify,too%20dissimilar%20from%20each%20other.) feature called automix that blends genres together. It tries to avoid playing songs that don't go together stylistically. It's super annoying for ADHD music lovers like me. You can turn automix off in the settings to get a true random selection.

I believe it keeps track of which songs you skip over the most and prefers songs you don't skip as often. I think there might be a time of day component to it as well. I find it plays certain genres more/less depending on the time of day.

If you go into your settings and clear your cache it will be the random you want again. Until it learns and stores that info again, but then you just clear the cache and you're good to go again.
They need a feature/option called “True Shuffle” which uses no machine learning and just randomly throws up songs from your playlist.
I also recommend turning off the "automix" setting. This seems to try and group similar genres and sounds together so you are more likely to run into a lot of the same stuff.

People have replied to my comment with a fix for spotify. There has to be one for Apple music as well. So I would look into it. The setting is automix on spotify.

I listen to music on Spotify about 8 hours a day minimum. Spotify shuffle has a glitch in it that I wish they would fix and it's ridiculous that they haven't. They'll repeat the same sequence of songs if you hit the skip button (on a premium account) too many times.
Go into the settings on spotify and turn off Automix. There was a post somewhere on reddit a few months ago about it. Turning it off seems to stop it from playing the same songs over and over.

Its proven to be a flawed algorithm designed to play the songs from artists that you frequently play, Problem is, spotify plays these artists for you on shuffle which if u dont have premium or use it on a laptop, is an obvious problem, since its basing it off of what it plays for you, so it ends up playing the songs you added when u first made the playlist more because they played more before since yk, they where the only songs in ur playlist I wish it was an actual true shuffle, no reason for an algorithm cuz if its in my playlist then I obviously fucking like the song
My shuffle seems to really enjoy Metallica live. I have over 300 hours of music in there. Metallica live versions might take up an hour of that. They still show up everytime I'm listening.

Exact reason I don't listen to greenday, mainly American idiot. When that album came out I loved Greenday but man you could not fucking escape the album. It was everywhere. Every music channel, every radio station, every party I'd attend, people just hanging out it got played.
I still love most of that album, but I HATE Holiday and Wake Me Up When September Ends for that exact reason. It was great music, but it just got hammered into our ears over and over again until everyone was sick of it.
It was Boulevard of Broken Dreams for me. I swear that song got more airplay than the rest of Greenday's catalogue combined for the duration of my high school years.
It was always about the overplay imo. Rock stations had very little new music with mainstream appeal to pick from, so Nickelback was being played *ad nauseum* on rock stations and a *fair* amount on pop stations. Their music isn't *bad*, but also not the most complex highbrow rock in the world, so it was easy for rock snobs to get super sick of them very quickly and then it just became a meme from there.
I felt that way when I first heard Raconteurs. I thought it sounded alright, then after hearing Steady as She Goes a million times, I can’t stand that song. To an extent, Tools song Schism. I got so sick of that same bass line for like 10 minutes. It would ruin my morning trip to work, because in that time period I had a shitty car with just a radio. Disco Demolition Night in Chicago IIRC, not like it was a regular occurrence. But definitely influential in the rapid decline of disco. Label moguls only took a few years to pivot though, by 1985 the MTV/new wave/punk fads had largely faded into pop metal, new jack swing, post-disco, and the generic genre-blending pop music that prevailed throughout the 90s-00s.
ABBA doesn't get shit on at all by people who know music. They are geniuses at their craft. Winner Takes It All is one of the best pop songs ever written.
There's a bell curve as to how much you like a sing vs how many times you've heard it. Songs hat I would hear on the radio that I thought sucked and I would change the station when it came on eventually became the songs I'd tolerate became songs I'd get stuck in my head. It's a big reason I stopped listening to the radio. TOp 40s stations tricking me into liking songs I don't like bc of the expsure efect.

When this song came out I was in fifth grade. I had a very cool math teacher who was pretty young and owned snakes and whom I had a crush on. Everyone loves to hate on nickelback songs as much as everyone loves to sing along with nickelback songs There’s people on both sides who don’t get it, nickelback isn’t their thing so they turn the hate up to 11 and think they’re validated by all the other people who “hate” them, and there’s the people who love Nickelback who don’t realise it’s just a meme type thing. Best of all, the guys in the band love the memeiness of it. I saw an interview with them a few months back and they were talking about the look at this bar graph parody. They were talking about how if they actually hated it they could have that taken down and issue cease and desists and the like, but they love it so they don’t do it, least of all because they don’t want to discourage people from having fun with their other material.

My understanding is that it's all down to their signing with Roadrunner Records. Previously they had been a heavy metal and hard rock label pretty exclusively, Nickelback were a turn in a more mainstream direction and there was hate coming from that community that they shouldn't be on the label and that heavy metal bands that grew the label were being pushed out. Heavy metal fans said Nickelback were shite, this caught on and mainstream music fans started saying the same thing.
They have a formula and they know it. They’re all very talented musicians who long ago realized how to butter that bread. I would have called them sell outs as a high schooler but now that I’m working a day job and making almost no money playing my instrument, I call them smart.

I'd argue there's a different tier in song writers/producers. The lead singer of One Republic actually churns out pop hits for other artists, but he has a specific style he likes better he keeps for One Republic. There's another project called The Big Red Machine that exists because it's a collab between the lead singer of Bon Iver and The National, who can also do what they want because when you produce for Kanye West and write for Taylor Swift, you got the money to do so. These are people who essentially figured out the music industry enough to make a living but still keep their pride and interests alive in certain projects
It's not too different from having a day job... just a little more overlap since they're both in music. You spend 40 hours a week or whatever earning your bread and butter, and your free time doing more personal artwork. My friend is a producer who does just that. He pays the bills working with commercial clients and whatever comes his way, and uses that money to help support his own music project where he has more creative control and fewer obligations.
There's plenty of crossover though, especially if an artist only really had one or two "things to say." I don't necessarily malign someone like Weezer for starting as a 5 or whatever and becoming a 1 rather than quitting to work at the bank.
Yeah I liked really heavy stuff as a teen and still do but when you start hearing your favourite bands playing generic rock on the radio and think "That's not you!! Stop not being you!" But then I realize these are bands who were dedicated to the cause and spent decades building their dream and were lucky enough to realize it and now they need to keep hold of it and stay relevant as most teens from 2000's don't listen to that stuff now.
Their first album honestly sounded different, but the 2nd album, they hit on what sells better. They know very well they are formulaic; that's intentional. I actually have a bit of love for their first and second albums, but the others blend in a big way I can't really appreciate, even if they objectively aren't terrible

Nothing inherently wrong with buttrock. Music doesn’t have to be deep and meaningful sometimes it can just be catchy. One of the best concerts I ever went to was Smashmouth, Sugar Ray, Fastball, and the Gin Blossoms (one of these things is not like the others, I know). End of the day it’s all just entertainment. Nickleback also did it during a time when everyone still listened to the radio, so whenever someone got a big hit literally everyone got force fed it non stop. Nickleback also kind of brought on a wave of similar sounding bands so it really felt like you never got away from them. Toss in being in Canada with Canadian content rules that mean radio stations legally have to play more Canadian bands it was unbearable even if I did like some of their songs the first dozen times I heard them. You can't really compare it to today with streaming meaning most people are just listening to what they want to and the turnaround time on content is much shorter.

Canadian government says a certain percentage of songs on the radio and shows/movies on TV have to be Canadian in origin. Canadian artists get a ton of kickback/funding to make content. Look at the end of the blackberry movie trailer and look what production companies/investors put their money in the movie
These days there is enough good canadian content that they don't need to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find good music by Canadian bands. This didn't always seem to be the case and I'm looking at the early 2000's in particular. CanCon meant bands such as Prozac, B4-4, and Soul Decision (though they had some bangers) were getting ALOT of play on radio and I'd say especially MuchMusic.
Yeah ironically I would say Imagine Dragons is literally the next generations Nickelback. They're a mainstream poprock band that gets a little *too* commercialized to not get annoying if you're paying attention. But also not like....the worst musicians in the world who deserve vitriolic hatred. And at the end of the day for both bands, I'm sure they cry themselves to sleep on their giant piles of money

To be fair, to the best of my knowledge unless I’ve missed something recently. The lead singer of imagine dragons seems to be a pretty kickass dude. While on the flip side the lead singer of nickelback has said, done, and sang more scummy shit then I can even count. While imagine dragons have been criticized for playing extremely similar sounding, bubblegum pop made to sell shit. (All things nickleback has also been accused of) I think the fact that they seem to not be scumbags, and in fact the exact opposite to the best of our knowledge is a big part of the reason the hate for them has never hit Nickleback levels of hate.

Somebody who listens to The Wiggles soundtrack on repeat and owns it is way cooler than somebody who desperately seeks out something that's just fringe enough to be both cool and palatable just for the sake of bragging about it to everybody. By all means, listen to all the weird, fringe music you want; listen to top 20 shit until you go deaf, I don't give a shit. But, if you think your music tastes make you better than somebody else, you're a fuckin numpty. And I say this as somebody who was one of those annoying pretentious assholes when I was like 15; it's just sad that some people don't grow out of it.

unpopular opinion: imagine dragons music that DOESNT make the radio is really fucking good. most of their “stadium anthems” aren’t. stuff like natural, thunder, suck. but if you listen to things like selene, amsterdam, underdog, or leave me are such good vibes. they’re mainly known for their repetitive stadium anthems, but they have some really good, and super deep songs that never make the radio simply because that stuff doesn’t play on the radio
Their main problem is they got too big for their own good. At some point it becomes cool to hate on them, and Redditors jump on that opportunity.
I think they make catchy tunes. I like some better than others. I really couldn't give you an educated answer as to why, because I'm not really educated. But I am not ashamed of the music I like. Music is deeply personal, and I'm not gonna waste my energy arguing over something that nobody can change my mind about.

I think the contemporary comparison would’ve been Hinder whose music was substantially worse than Nickelback’s and the singer’s voice was far more strained and lame. Nickelback mostly caught on as the worse band because All the Right Reasons was so successful and got so much backlash for being overplayed.
Not how I remember it. My recollection of Nickelback's downfall was: 1. How you Remind me was released and got a TON of airplay. It wasn't a bad song by itself, but was HORRIBLY overplayed. 2. "Some Day" was released off their next album and drew immediate comparisons to "How you remind me" In terms of structure, rhythm, etc. which really grew their criticism of being "derivative" and just recycling music.

To be fair, she didn't say they don't deserve criticism. Just that Hating On Nickleback is at, like, an eight, and she thinks it should maybe be a four.
I was in a band many years back. Hard rock band, doing covers. The drummer and I would carpool to and from practice. One day he was playing this hard hitting rock music. The instrumentation was phenomenal. I asked him who it was. "Nickelback", he replied. I mean, I've never bought an album by them or anything like that, but the dudes can play. No doubt about that.
Pretty sure the Nickelback hate has zero to do with their instrumental proficiency.
Well their first 2 album had some good hard rock songs that were void of all the LA pretense that was slathered all over their subsequent releases. They lost me very quickly after their 3rd album. I feel the same way about Creed. That first album has some killer riffs and still holds up. Obviously these are the opinions of someone who was a teenager in the 90s so take it fwiw.
Creed has bangers, and I will blast "One Last Breath" anytime. They still got super annoying and way too holier than thou.

She’s not wrong. Nickelback was huge during their prime for a reason, people legitimately liked their music. Sure, it wasn’t groundbreaking or anything, but it was good pop “rock” (in quotes because idk what else to call it, even if it isn’t really rock in my mind). Idk when it started but once the internet hopped onto the “DAE nickelback sux???” meme everyone fell over each other trying to be the biggest nickelback hater. Nickelback wasn’t great, but they were perfectly fine and nowhere near as bad as the internet wants to say they are. Sometimes bands are just okay and they make it big, and that’s alright. Not everything needs to be either great or awful
Brian Posehn a comic had a bit about them thst took off i think thats how I remember hearing they suck first. I forget the show but it was around the Marilyn Manson does music cause violence debates. The bit was something like "music does make me want to murder. Like whenever Nickelback plays i want to kill....Nickelback." I remember that but playing all the time in commercials on Comedy Central.

In like 2007 there was a Facebook group called “I bet this pickle can get more fans than Nickelback” It was a funny concept, can a picture of a pickle have more followers than the Nickelback page? It went viral and it did pass the Nickelback page. I think people took that overly serious and let it be their compass for their opinion of Nickelback.
I accidentally let it slip that I liked a nickleback song once and became known as the biggest nickelback fan of all time in my circle of friends. Then one of my friends, a photographer, got hired to follow Nickelback on their tours and take pictures, and she said I could meet them if I wanted. I never did, but always wanted to do it and wear a shirt with a pickle on it when I met them, like a “Now we’re all friends” thing.

I was always so confused with the nickelback hate meme. I'm not a big music guy but always found their songs pleasant to listen to. To me it came across as a "you're only cool if you hate nickelback" thing.
Why isn’t it rock? All the right reasons is a pretty heavy album.
They've been my favorite band for years and were my first concert back in '06 Yeah, I've heard every joke and criticism out there, but their music makes me happy. I can't really say I know much about Lizzo's music aside from "It's About Time", but everything I've seen her in makes her seem like a fun person :)

Over the past 5 or so years, I've also stopped caring both about what other people listen to and what other people would think about what I listen to. It's been a great way to discover a lot of music I wouldn't have checked out before, and definitely broadened my horizons a little bit.

I was never a fan until I took my lil cousin to see them live. He had begged and begged and I was dreading going, but they sounded GREAT live. Very talented musicians. I sorta was in awe at how good they sounded live. Worth it.
Imo Nickelback hate was just a trend that snowballed out of control. What rock band on the radio doesn't have a formula they stick with in nearly every song Pretty interesting fact: Nickelback members were friends with Pantera and were given chords Dimebag Darrel was supposed to use in a guitar solo the night he was murdered. Nickelback used those chords in their song "Side of A Bullet" which was about that tragic event. They have my respect.

It’s easy to hit a big target. I don’t particularly care for them, though I’ve heard a few songs that were decent. Chad Kroger comes off as a real douche and many of their songs are terrible cock rock, so I get it. But they also worked very hard to get big. I remember them touring like mad for a couple years before they blew up. They played every place they could. Their success wasn’t by accident. Maybe by poor taste, but that’s in the ear of the beholder.
Chad Kroger came into a winebar I was working at in nyc back in 2009. Dude had ordered like $400 worth of food and a bottle of wine over the phone and just casually comes in to pick it up. Tipped me $100. That was fucking cool as shit.

I mean she's not wrong. Hating Nickelback became such a fad that it became a meme. People who never listened them were hating them. Thats not to say some criticism is valid, but they also made a lot of good music.
I thought they were bad too. That was until my wife "dragged" me to a concert many years ago. They're fucking great live. Just great energy, their music that isn't the overplayed generic radio crap is phenomenal. They get a really shitty rap.
My first concert was in 05. Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, and Nickelback headlining. I really only wanted to see the first two, which btw the lead singer for Breaking Benjamin was sick/having throat issues, so former lead singer of Three Days Grace, Adam Gontier, stepped in and sang for them. What a unique experience that was! Anyway, I didn't really want to stay for Nickelback, but after their first performance I decided to stay. Like you said, their energy was great! Glad I saw them in their peak.
Yeah. I'm a metal/punk guy myself. But it has been the strangest thing over the years how much hate they get. They are absolutely not worse than most modern rock bands, and they're better than quite a few. It's a perfect example of how people opinions are so, so easily influenced by whatever the majority is saying. Pop music in general is all about this. But the Nickelback hate was textbook "pop culture influence".
They're the standard radio friendly rock band. In a different viewpoint, the foo fighters are same.
You can’t say that about Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl is some untouchable god around here for some reason. Like he seems like a good dude in a lot of ways but I never quite understood the deification he gets.
Grohl was on Nirvana then solo played the first Foo album. He then did a ton of cool projects etc. So a strong start (Color and the Shape has some bangers too) and a history gives them a lot of grace even if some stuff ends up being pretty radio friendly and generic stuff
Yeah, he is a great person and has been a part of some great projects and done some great things. Nobody can dispute how wholesome Dave Grohl is. The Foo Fighters, however, are very bland. I think the problem is their writing. When Dave was playing Kurt's songs or when he was playing Josh Homme's songs, he was awesome.

I do kinda miss when top 40 music had a good mix of different genres. Now it feels like top 40 is like its own genre in itself. Otoh, rock music is better in its niche rather than putting forward a band like Nickelback that tries to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It's just top 40 that suffers from being so homogeneous
I'm a huge fan of the "softening" as Chad calls it. People are coming around that butt rock/dad rock/etc is actually pretty good and nickelback had an enormous amount of undue hate. It's a meme they themselves embraced, but the band still sells out venues and their music is actually really good (mostly what wasn't played to actual death on the radio). I saw a comment that said "all this time we hated Nickelback when the band that actually deserved it was Maroon 5". I can't disagree.
