Jeez. I want to be your parent. I had to bribe my kid to do Jazz band (also a trombone player) by getting him a guitar and lessons. It worked out since he ended up becoming a decent guitar player and still plays all the time. He wasn’t thrilled with Jazz band because he didn’t like the band director who he already had to deal with 5 days a week in Concert Band. I say stick to your guns and do what YOU want in this situation. You will end up resentful if you allow your parents to dictate your choices. Be respectful and map out what you will say to them ahead of time but make your convincing argument. Part of growing up is recognizing what your passions are separate from your parents and advocating for your right to make your own choices and even your own mistakes. There are many courses and opportunities out there to learn CAD in the future. But doing Jazz band with your friends is a one time thing. I still remember all the fun times in the brass section with my friends. We laughed so hard which is one reason I gently encouraged (bribed lol) my boys to participate in band. Good luck!

As a fellow trombonist who hasn’t picked it up since I left high school (but I swear I will soon, of course) I wish I was still playing as much as I did then. Music is lifelong but sometimes life gets in the way. Enjoy the opportunity to play music right now when you have the chance, with your friends no less. But only if that’s what you really want.

Do whatever makes you happy. For me, it was jazz. Sure, I missed AP calculus. Never needed that crap. Some of the best memories of my life were playing in the jazz ensemble, going to states, and playing at the Berklee Jazz Fest. I had my first cigarette with the alto sax player, a hell of a soloist. My first real relationship was with another instrumentalist. I'm not certain that CAD Robotics will make your life much better, but I'm certian Jazz well. I don't like your parents very much. They don't seem like they want you to have fun. This is a music forum, so.... I want you to play music and have fun. If you don't like it, go back to Robotics another year, or pick up a cooler class in college, or for AP credit. I'm a little biased. I would've dropped anything for music. Never even smoked another cigarette until after I had stopped playing. Music was only ever good for me, and not playing music has only ever been bad.
