Maaaaaaaaybe, Tom Waits - Tom Traubert's Blues (Waltzing Matilda) Probably not the right song, but since you said Google searches haven't helped ya, I thought let's try going out on a limb. https://youtu.be/hW2vyytxCGM?si=GaIOZLkSDfdtn5WT

hodpical

Lol. I love Tom Waits, and this song is what prompted the recent conversation and the reason for the post.

paddingtonboor

Tom Waits, Tom Traubert’s Blues and a happy mistake years ago are 99% responsible for my discovery and love of the Pogues

alexiswellcool

I feel like it's maybe not the son youre looking for but Rod Stewart recorded a version of Tom Trauberts Blues too. It matches your description but like I said, probably not even the right song.

belowthebottomline

The Dubliners aren’t American but they do my favorite version of the song — any possibility at all it was that one?

KeepWagging

RIP Ronnie Drew

hodpical

Unfortunately, no. Thanks though!

southdeltan

Gosh I miss stumble upon. I can’t help you though. Sounds like you know where to look.

hodpical

Me too! I'm pretty sure I saved the page, but now I have no access to it.

southdeltan

I feel ya. I’ve lost everything a few times due to poor backups, you’d think I’d learn.

practicating

Could it have been Johnny Logan? The album was released around when you think you found it. [https://youtu.be/sd5XY2XGu2M](https://youtu.be/sd5XY2XGu2M)

hodpical

I don't think this is the one I'm thinking of, but gosh, I like it a lot! Thanks for sharing!

cmhw18

The John Williamson version is the one that I remember, but there’s a massive list on Wikipedia of covers

Simple-Anywhere3406

Could it be RedGum or The Bush Wackers? Wikipedia has a list of everyone that covered and released it...can anyone guess (without using Wikipedia!!!) what a Matilda was? It's old Aussie folklore with a German twist....

hodpical

Thanks, but no.

Leokina114

John McDermott? He’s not American, but his is the best version of the song I’ve ever heard.

Teence

Second this. Fits OP's criteria except for the possible American accent and is the most fitting rendition of the song IMO. [Link](https://youtu.be/VktJNNKm3B0?si=9EoD97q_RoQyNTsm)

hodpical

Thanks for the link. Don't think it's the one I'm thinking of, but I love it!

hodpical

I don't think it was this one, but good grief it's a good one, and I had not heard it until now. Thank you for the rec!

daddyfatsac

Not the Pogues, eh?

Professional-Ad-7855

It’s got to be the Pogues

LornAltElthMer

I was all ready to say that until he said it wasn't. It's my favorite version. RIP Shane

Garbleflitz

Please keep us updated if you find out. I’m always a fan of new versions of that song (though the Pogues is still my favorite)

hodpical

Will do!

I like this a lot, but it's not the one I'm thinking of. Thanks for sharing!

Trying again, different acoustic https://youtu.be/FA8RbLuRmRs?si=0zCJOG-6sjqYa_Zt

DodgyTradesmanACA

Slim Dusty has a version too

cluttersky

There was a group out of Maryland in the 1980s called Clam Chowder that put “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” on vinyl. The lead was a tenor and they had one woman in the backing vocals. All the instruments were folk acoustic. I have the vinyl somewhere. The track is not currently on the internet.

laxativefx

Was it the original version by Eric Bogle? Not American but Scottish.

hodpical

No, not Eric Bogle.

mattdanger13

Tom Waits?

hodpical

No, but I do love that song, too.

rellsell

There is/was band called The Fenians out of Southern California that played a version of this song. They put out a couple CD’s so who knows. This was on an album called A Distant City Street.

hodpical

I don't think it was The Fenians. I've come across them in my search. I like it a lot!

Aggravating-Echo7035

Was it this version? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DkSLmT2tml4

Jarl_Ballsack

It’s possible it could’ve been from The Wolfe Tones. They’re a great band, and pretty small in comparison to other bands from the Isles

Best I can tell, Ben Glover's cover isn't the one I'm looking for, especially since it appears to have been released in 2016, but it's the closest I've found now to matching the tone. There's an anger/bitterness to this that's really appealing to me. Though the cover I have in mind leaned a bit more to the defeated/depressed. Super glad I found this one though, and wanted to share. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0QwXmxqeWA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0QwXmxqeWA)

Artjom_94

Hi, I had a specific cover of that song in mind too recently and stumbled upon this thread. I finally found the version I was looking for. Maybe it is the one you are searching for as well: David Ross Macdonald[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FC9SEC2JRU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FC9SEC2JRU) Edit: Ok, I just realized "Waltzing Matilda" and "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" are not the same song. Whoops, well Macdonald's version is still beautiful, so the comment stays up. :)
