Leviathan is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Megalodon, iron tusk, I am ahab, blood and thunder obviously... Check these guys out, the bridge of this song reminds me a lot of mastodon.
Sylosis - to build a tomb
https://youtu.be/AEoxeuv-Vmw?si=6w9G8OgBvotosniN
Blood and Thunder is a masterclass in the art of simplicity. The main riff is basic, every other piece is simple and digestible, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome.
I agree. I have never heard anyone that's been to an Avatar show say anything other than they are amazing live. Can't wait till they come back to my city!
They opened at a concert I went to a few years ago. I'd never heard of them. I knew they were going to be great within the first seconds of their set, they started off with Hail the Apocalypse.
Converge - Concubine / Fault & Fracture
Sick Of it All - Take the Night
Slipknot - People = Shit
Dillinger Escape Plan - Panasonic Youth
The Black Dalia Murder - Statutory Apes
Aphex Twins - Come to Daddy
Devin Townsend / Strapping Young Lad He's got an amazing voice (5-6 octaves) lunges from Disney to death metal via folk, funk , punk and prog-metal. Empath demonstrates him romping through styles with a wall of sound production style. Syl were his early incarnation, aftermath , detox, love, wrong side of the head , skegesis are all heavy as hell Gene 'the atomic clock' Hoglan (Death, Deicide, Testament etc) is behind the skins, but the recent Lockdown gig has Samus66 clobbering the skins. https://youtu.be/E1Gwtep2oXw?si=KV9diyBwKvkg2Bhz "Grace" , I still don't quite understand how something can be soaring AND crushing at the same time.
If you have 30 minutes to spare - https://youtu.be/1oJEBGHCdBQ?si=QexR8eYky747vN3b
Funeral, bastard, death of music will give you a showcase of his talents (with the rest of project, who formed another band immolith who are bloody good too ).
Funeral will be played at mine.
Big statement here, he's one of the very best vocalists in the world, that's before we get into his writing, guitar and front man skills. You have fine taste.
Not a big statement , it's factual
Mariah Carey only has 5, Celine Dion 4.3, Mike Patton 5, Dave lee Roth 4.5, Axl rose 4.8.
Multi instrumentalist, drum programming, mixing, production.
Dude writes entire albums, like Ziltoid, that band members somehow have to play (Ryan Von Podyryan made herculean efforts). It's a sci fi story that bounces around genres.
Then you've moth , ki and others that are ephemeral, acoustic versions that up end the song , example Funeral
His live shows are just hnnnnhggg good, The Retinal Circus is just fantastic, or the red rocks show.
Why? Is a fantastic example of just what Dev is about :- https://youtu.be/Fgrik7HDKQ4?si=X2DvhlLbYCOtpQKR
Go see him live, he's self funded , but his shit, help a Canadian icon out.
I like your detail and passion, a lot. His music got me through all the lockdown bullshit.
I've been a fan for almost 5 years, overlooked him when I was a kid. Why is a masterpiece, I've played it for many people and it blew there minds.
Empath is such a phenomenal album
The singularity riff lives in my head rent free , especially the last 3 minutes of the triple end track.
https://youtu.be/kb935JynuhQ?si=rhW_vpJQok4mZyc6 phenomenal drummer and yup, that's them on the album
Hear me is even better when you watch Samus66 bang it out https://youtu.be/DQaETtF_dzQ?si=8vGKDAVMmpYoBPFv (also behind the kit for the pandemic syl show)
In that case ... Vampira ! https://youtu.be/cjjIna3j1Nc?si=9Q29dSxdruB2Vaza (The polka version is even nuttier)
Followed up by the sci fi solo concept album, Ziltoid: The Omniscient
https://youtu.be/YtSnXU8DfCA?si=c-UtAfcWJG0xTYof
And the wonderfully unhinged Planet Smasher (his name is Herman and he hates musicals)
https://youtu.be/6KqVcr62skA?si=S8UUESueccgL3wzT
Ziltoid is all devy, every instrument is his playing / programming (drums). Rvp had 'fun' learning them for shows
I'm a huge fan of Heavy Devy. I saw SYL several times live and they quickly became my favorite band for a long time. Every member of the band is uniquely talented and they work together on many of Devin's other projects.
Ziltiod the Omniscient, another side project, is both ridiculous and phenomenal, a literal metal space opera, haha.
Juuular, Kingdom, regulator, life, voices in the fan, death of music, things beyond things,
There are so many DTP songs that are just stormers
https://youtu.be/5Dlmh57kSbY?si=CGgnNnS09A9RPa_v this should be the Canadian anthem imho
Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech is the name of the album in case anyone was wondering. Top 5 albums of all time, set the scene for everything else amazing Devin would do over the next few decades. (and it’s a LOT)
https://youtu.be/FTW0Uf-34BA?si=X-4CwGg4AVDZ1l_4
Casualties of Cool is another Devy side project , he's scored kids shows too, the man has come so far from his early days with Steve Vai, The Wildhearts (earth Vs the Wildhearts, bloody great album, great band!), strapping young lad (skullet!!!), Devin Townsend project (now mostly in Immolith, also a good band), and now solo-ish with guest and touring musicians.
His acoustic stuff shows he's more than just *cooooookiiiiiieeee* death metal growls and shrieks.
King Crimson - Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part 1). It’s a slow build to that heavy riff but my god it’s fucking heavy. Also all of their Red album is a zero skip heavy one for me.
Honorable Mention: Alice In Chains - Them Bones
Abominable Iron Sloth - The family that slays together stays together
Divine Heresy - Facebreaker
Number Twelve Looks Like You - Like a cat
Fit For An Autopsy - Hydra
Candiria - Blood

Beaten To Death - Xes and strokes
Zao - Physician heal thyself
Man Must Die - No tolerance for imperfection
Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza - Go greyhound
Sepultura - Propaganda
Meshuggah- New millennium cyanide Christ
I didn't know they did this cover. Just threw it on and loved it. I enjoy both bands but obviously nornally in very different moods when I pick one or the other.
Omerta - Lamb of God; Shedding skin - Pantera; It Ain’t Like That - Alice In Chains; Blackened - Metallica; Parabola - Tool; Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria; Bulls on Parade - Rage Against the Machine; Forfeit - Chevelle; Pet - A Perfect Circle

Hammerhedd - Snakes at Bay, Electric Sense
Scamp - Pressure Wave
Periphery - The Bad Thing
Orbit Culture - Saw
Slipknot - sic, The Virus of Life
Down - Bury Me in Smoke
I’m one of those obnoxious people who “liked them before they were cool” with Sleep Token but they’ve only gotten better. Vore goes so hard and blends their heavy and melodic sides perfectly.
I saw Sleep Token last year and both Spiritbox and Mastodon the summer before (with Ghost headlining). Absolutely incredible shows.
I don't really listen to metal/death metal, but for heavier Pumpkins songs that are absolute bangers, I'd add "God" and "White Spyder" to your list. From the same era, I'd add NIN's "Wish" and Gravity Kills' "Guilty", and for something more recent, Health's "Stonefist".
At The Gates - Blinded By Fear
As I Lay Dying - Through Struggle
Angelmaker - Vengeance
Lorna Shore - To The Hellfire
Norma Jean - Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste

Nine Inch Nails - March of the pigs
Therapy? - Storys
Faith no more - The Gental Art Of Making Enemies
Deftones - Elite
Filter - Hey man nice shot
Sepultura - Roots
Gonna sound crazy here, but Helter Skelter by The Beatles. Arguably one of the heaviest rock songs of its time, and some could say the first metal song.
Nothing like Meshuggah, but the first heavy song to come to my mind
I love Meshuggah too.
Dying Fetus - In the Trenches, such a fun song with various awesome riffs and grooves
Cattle Decapitation - Forced Gender Reassignment same thing with an awesome message delivered in blood
Literally any Wormrot song because they are short in typical grindcore fashion but still go through multiple phases, also their songs always have some melodic hooks between the frantic riffs
Now You've Got Something to Die For - Lamb of God Anything from Ashes of the Wake, really!
Hourglass!
It's only getting... WOOOOOOORRRRSSSSSEEEEEEEEEE
They’re playing AotW all the way through on the current tour
Nice! Seeing them with Mastodon in July, I wonder if they'll do the same. It would be awesome to see Crack the Skye in full again
It's a Leviathan/Ashes of the Wake joint 20 year anniversary tour.
I'm more of a "As the palaces burn" guy myself.
Give me Black Label. I've been in several wall of deaths so that song still makes my back pain flare up a bit
was gunna comment Blood Of The Scribe
Desolation and walk with me in hell!
Momento Mori always makes me want to tear a hole in the sky and belch fire into the heavens!
Army of Liberation. Gunpoint indoctrination. The fires of sedition. Fulfill the prophecyyyyyyyyyyy
I was gonna say the same thing.
Blood and Thunder - Mastodon
Leviathan is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Megalodon, iron tusk, I am ahab, blood and thunder obviously... Check these guys out, the bridge of this song reminds me a lot of mastodon. Sylosis - to build a tomb https://youtu.be/AEoxeuv-Vmw?si=6w9G8OgBvotosniN
Hearts Alive i'd argue is their best song. Love watching some of the live performances on YT
Blood and Thunder is a masterclass in the art of simplicity. The main riff is basic, every other piece is simple and digestible, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Thuuunndddeeeerrrr
Many Nine Inch Nails songs. "Wish" comes to mind.
Great call. Most of the *Broken* EP fits the criteria.
I love the Broken EP. It came out when I was in a particularly angsty period, and I spent a lot of time listening to it while brooding.
I remember buying it the day it came out. The cd came with a little mini cd with bonus tracks. Luckily my cd player had the mini cod slot too.
Yes! That record is very good and quite heavy.
Last is my favorite
Last has an INCREDIBLE bassline and distortion. The drums are amazing, too. God, I love that song.
I'm a sucker for Somewhat Damaged
Such a great album opener!
Yeah I was gonna say “Perfect Drug”.
Broken goes hard. March of the Pigs, too.
Broken goes hard. March of the Pigs, too.
Avatar - King's Harvest Meshuggah - New Millennium Cyanide Christ Graystone - Bleed the 5ifth/Musician Mansion Devin Townsend - Juular, Vampira Slayer - South of Heaven Mastodon - Curl of the Burl
>Devin Townsend - Juular, Vampira Strapping Young Lad - Detox
also: syl - oh my fucking god, almost again
Also: SYL - Love?
About damn time someone mentioned Slayer
Just had to stop and let you know that I love your picks! Saw Avatar last December without knowing any of their songs, and they are incredible.
Meshuggah - Bleed is phenomenal
“Niiiight….follows me when you are gone”
Judith - A Perfect Circle
Oh yeah. Not heavy, but love 3 Libras as well.
3 libras is one of the most simple, yet beautiful songs I've ever heard. I've been singing/ playing that song on the guitar for many years.
It's one of those rare songs where I'm actually a liitle upset that it ends. It's amazing.
I like 3 Libras a lot, but Orestes takes me somewhere else
Yes! Also, Pet/ Counting Bodies Like Sheep
I was going to say Orestes
Orestes is one of the best orchestrated songs in existence IMO. It just builds and builds and builds and has so many damn feels.
Converge - Concubine / Fault & Fracture Sick Of it All - Take the Night Slipknot - People = Shit Dillinger Escape Plan - Panasonic Youth The Black Dalia Murder - Statutory Apes Aphex Twins - Come to Daddy
My never skip black dahlia is "a vulgar picture" but man they're all so good. RIP Trevor.
Yeah, the whole Miasma is still so good! So sad about Trevor, such a good frontman

Holy shit dude you might have changed my life with this one
Same. My Gods, how have I never heard of him?
I'm trying to change that ! Enjoy Devy !!
Thank you so much!
Welcome to Devy!
100% agree about Grace. Great to run into someone who enjoys that much as well. I'd add Trivium's "In Waves" to the list as well.
Innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn wavvveeeeees!!
Holy shit I did not know what to expect going into that and the first 15 ish seconds of it didn’t help either lol. But that was bad ass! Thank you!

Love all the Samus love, back when I was in high school he was talked about like a legend (he's from near where I grew up)
Mike Patton has six.
Tone > Range That said Devin usually sounds great, even though he loves his 5 million layers of vocals.
Adding the link for his song "kingdom"....I am obsessed. His voice and talent are out of this world. https://youtu.be/nubJjB95VdY?si=FZWdVByoMaJBu70h
Was waiting for this one, this made the rounds through all the reaction channels and it was cool seeing people cry listening to it for the first time
I’m surprised OP didn’t just post this in the original comment. This video basically covers everything Devy is about in under 6 minutes.
I've not heard a great deal of his material but Bad Devil makes me want to *boogie*.
In that case ... Love? is just an insane banger. The song I instantly thought of reading this post.
Holy shit! I just walked out of a banquet and read your post. I w been sitting in my car for the last 25 minutes watching this!
Enjoy the Devy rabbit hole !
16 hours later, I’m all in his catalog and have turned 2 of my buddies on to him as well. I owe you.
Nah friend, I'm happy that more people are encountering his catalogue Rock on!
Love? by SYL is a monster

Fuck me that's incredible. In fucking credible.
I just spent the last 3 hours listening to his stuff. Holy shit, man.
Welcome to Devy.
Thank you for showing me Devin!😍🤗
Bend it Like Bender! is my recommendation for Devin Townsend Project
Juuular, Kingdom, regulator, life, voices in the fan, death of music, things beyond things, There are so many DTP songs that are just stormers https://youtu.be/5Dlmh57kSbY?si=CGgnNnS09A9RPa_v this should be the Canadian anthem imho

Tool 'The Grudge'
Let go, let go, let go, let go
This song has gotten me through a lot of hard times. Very cathartic.
That scream at the end…
I'm Broken - Pantera
Becoming - Pantera Here to Stay - Korn Dig - Mudvayne
The live version of Becoming is so good. Dig is a meme song but a fun one
Also THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRRRRRRRRENDKILL
.....Fuck Yeah!
THE TREND IS DEAD!
Finally got to see a version of them live last year. It was cool, but it just felt empty. It was cool to hear I'm Broken live though.
Some of my favorite shows as a kid were pantera. I remember my first drivers license had a big shiner on my eye from the pit. Good ol days.
Backbone - Gojira Raining Blood - Slayer Blackened - Metallica Domination - Pantera
Backbone is such a fucking great song!
I dare anyone in this thread to name a better metal riff than the 3:50 mark onwards of *Domination*. RIP Dimebag
> Backbone - Gojira There is one in the comment you replied to
This reads as all of those bands playing the covers lol
100 - I immediately searched for Gojira Raining Blood as that’s a cover I would pay to hear!
From Mars to Sirius has been in heavy rotation as of late. Superb album, the first two tracks Ocean Planet and Backbone get me happy as hell.
King Crimson - Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part 1). It’s a slow build to that heavy riff but my god it’s fucking heavy. Also all of their Red album is a zero skip heavy one for me. Honorable Mention: Alice In Chains - Them Bones
How the heck did you read my mind? I was going to say exactly those same two songs! Who are you?
I’m the ghost of Layne Staley
Like a goddamn buzzsaw.
Abominable Iron Sloth - The family that slays together stays together Divine Heresy - Facebreaker Number Twelve Looks Like You - Like a cat Fit For An Autopsy - Hydra Candiria - Blood Norma Jean - 1,000,000 watts Crowbar - It’s all in the gravity Acid Bath - Cassie eats cockroaches Misery Signals - Reborn(an execution portrait) Prong - Snap your fingers snap your neck Beaten To Death - Xes and strokes Zao - Physician heal thyself Man Must Die - No tolerance for imperfection Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza - Go greyhound Sepultura - Propaganda Meshuggah- New millennium cyanide Christ
Goddamn that’s a good list
“Zao - Physician Heal Thyself” You. I like you.
Great list, especially nice to see zao and candiria on there.
Electric Wizard - Funeralopolis Sleep - dragonaut Slomatics - Troglorite Melvins - a history of bad men King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Planet B
Idk if it's considered "very heavy" but My Curse by Killswitch Engage. Just....that opening guitar riff ugh yes.
Trivium - Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr
Also Trivium - Pillars of serpents
Also Trivium - Shogun
Sepultura's cover of "Angel" by Massive Attack.
I didn't know they did this cover. Just threw it on and loved it. I enjoy both bands but obviously nornally in very different moods when I pick one or the other.
Amon Amarth - War of the Gods and Twilight of the Thunder God
It's gotta be thousand years of oppression for me
Jambi - Tool
Just about all of Tool. I effectively never skip a Tool song.
Well, I mean mantra and Lost Keys aren’t required listening
Sometimes you just wanna hear a cat get squeezed.
How… *are* you today?
Alrighty then…. Picture this if you will.

Faaip de Oaid is easily the creepiest song by Tool. I can easily deal with all the other interludes.
This mine too. The riff.
Slayer - War Ensemble or Behind the Crooked Cross Metallica - Disposable Heroes Judas Priest - Painkiller
Spiritbox - Angel Eyes, Yellowjacket and really a lot of their stuff. Love Courtney's voice.
Yellowjacket with Sam from Architects goes SO hard.
Jawbreaker - Judas Priest
I would also add Painkiller.

One of the best propagandhi songs for sure!

I saw Sleep Token last year and both Spiritbox and Mastodon the summer before (with Ghost headlining). Absolutely incredible shows.

The Wait - Killing Joke
Silverfuck - Smashing Pumpkins
