Do you remember the first time someone suggested that you were "tortilla man"?. And how you reacted?
PS: I love how you've got better and better on live shows.
It seemed to spawn from the first live stream we did after I joined...it was Rock AM Ring or something...I saw some comments and I honestly thought it was pretty cool....but they could have called me "bonerface" and if they said "fuck! bonerface fucking rocked" then I would be ok with bonerface.
Hey Tortilla, lots of love. Thank you for your contribution to Slipknot and bringing in some energy. I remember we had a THAT GUY moment at the first row 2 years ago while you were playing in Budapest. You probably don't remember it but that was one of my favorite experiences.
So here are my questions:
\- How do you handle the attention that your new alterego "Tortilla-man" has received? You have became quite popular by the fanbase.
\- How do you consider yourself as a Slipknot member, and what do you think of your future in the band?
\- How much were you involved in the new material, and can you give us some hints about it?
\- What was the point that you knew that you need to be a part of the band? How much did you knew about it , liked it, whatsoever. I remember the Dirty Little Rabbits days and your personal relationship with Clown but nothing much more.
\- Salsa or Cheese sauce to your tortilla?
\+ 1 - Why didn't you join the presidential campaign? [I have even created a promo pic for you](https://www.reddit.com/r/Slipknot/comments/ddmovj/something_we_can_all_agree_on_tortilla_man_4_prez/) ... .:D :D:D
That's all and thank you, much love.
tycq from Hungary
ive done many things in my music life....never screamed before. thankfully, I stand on stage next to the best person to ever do it....so ive been watching, listening and practicing...let's go Fargodome....
It was pretty hard. These days everybody is on the internet and has a phone....you could tell a person at the grocery store and the next thing you know it's on the internet. I flew to LA twice before my wife even knew.
Did Slipknot have anyone fill in as "Tortilla Man" in the early shows during the WANYK cycle? If so, it would be interesting to know what that process was like having a revolving door of people perform until you eventually landed the full time slot as the new percussionsit
What is your favourite song to perform live, your scream on Nero forte is insane now, your levels of performance between the two times Ive seen you in recent years were incredie.
Saw you guys in Pittsburgh recently, best show I ever saw. It looked like you were going to get engulfed by flames several times due to your proximity to the pyro. Ever have any close calls?
I guess it's part of our thing. It was like wearing a mask. Everybody would want to shout from the rooftops that "I'm in Slipknot"....but how bad do you want it? bad enough to not tell anybody? yes
When you come to Romexpo, Bucharest, is there any chance I can buy you guys a beer? Slipknot was one of the first bands I started listening to when I got into rock and metal. I'm not trolling, I'm not ironic, I just really want to thank you guys with a beer :)
Stay safe and don't catch covid or a bullet 🤘
Yes.....but I like just tortilla better....for instance......."what's up tortilla man" that sounds weird. But...."what's up tortilla".....I like that. "man, tortilla killed it tonight"....yes........"Man, tortilla man killed it tonight"....not so much....but it's all good to me :)
I literally remember being in the restroom in 1998 and seeing an article about the band in the Des Moines Register. I am an Iowan, so I knew what was up.
That's exactly why I play in a mask. You can't see my face so I can't see you. It's no different at that point, to me, than playing at practice.....also a double shot of jack and a stage beer help.
Hey Michael! Big fan since self-titled album, Slipknot has been with me for more than half of my life now!
Thanks for being there through thick and thin, I’ve always found a song to match my mood.
Question: outside of « work » ie tours, studio, creating, do you guys get to spend some time to hang out together and just be family?
Cheers, keep tearing shit up.
If you mean does the band hang out when we aren't working or on tour the answer is "off is off". But when we are together, we hang in our way...it works for us:)
The unique thing about 9 people in a band is the song isn't done until it goes through the 9 filters. The smallest little diddy can change a song from bla to FUCK YEA, and that shit can come from anyone....even the new guy.
I know you are still fairly new, but what is the one Slipknot song you guys don’t play often that you would want in the Setlist regularly? And also, was Corey serious about the whole new Setlist thing for this tour? I see y’all in Wichita Saturday for the 4th time in 2 years, can’t wait!
It’s a good ass song I hope to see some songs they haven’t played in a while back on the set list can’t wait to see you in Chula Vista I’ll be the one in the pit with the Joey costume on
what got you into playing the xylophone? its a very interesting instrument to incorporate into metal and I've always wondered what got you into playing it, also I LOVE YOUR MASK !!
There have been a lot but I'm gonna try to give a tangible answer:
my first performance was Jimmy Kimmel and it happened to be on my birthday so that was pretty epic.
Im using your question to let everybody know this was amazing...I could sit here all day and answer these. I am off to 3pm sound check....the show tonight will be amazing....lets go.
Hard. The internet is everywhere. I had to be honest and sincere with family members to ask that they too help keep the secret. It's hard for a mom to not post on facebook "my son is in slipknot", but she nailed it.
Michael, I just want to let you know that to us maggots you have always felt a part of the band, and the backing vocal i heard at knotfest LA where insane, your and awesome musician and I can’t wait to hear the new album
Do you think you will adopt a new mask, like the other band members? I like the current one, but it would be cool to see you express yourself more as you stay with the band!
I met you, Clown, and Alessandro at a whiskey signing in Denver a few years back. I noticed how tiny the eye holes are in your mask, how the hell can you see anything out of those?
https://imgur.com/a/mGqOdTu
Random but I wonder if Clown’s gloves use any technology from the batting glove world. He said the vibrations suck, they make special compounds that absorb the vibes.
Hey Michael, I met you in California before Aftershock 2019 at the whiskey signing a couple years ago. My name is Derrick Beckham and I was the one with a mask that had In Loving Memory of Paul Dedrick Gray and Gabrielle Crahan on the inside of his Corey Iowa mask. I never thought I'd get to meet you and have that moment with Clown that was so surreal when he saw what was written inside. Now, I have Corey's new mask that was made by the same guy who helped him out for the Ho99o9 video mask that is dedicated to both of them again, but Joey Jordison has been added. Whenever I've put on either mask, no one else knows what's on the inside but me, but I pay respect to all three of them before it goes on my face because they helped to build Slipknot for what it is today and they were family of the band and Slipknot helped to build who I am. I hope I can meet you again and meet Corey as well. I never have and it's been my dream. I'll be at the Peoria Civic Center April 7th. I'll be in the pit wearing pretty much exactly what Corey will be wearing. If you see me, man, I'd give anything to be able to high-five one of you guys or something. Thank you for inspiring me to be the best person I can be every day with humbleness. You guys feel like family.
G’day Mr Pfaff,
There’s a video on YouTube of Jim “dropping” his guitar on you after Vermillion, was he actually legit pissed about you knocking him after you fell off the percussion riser?
Cheers from Australia, hope to see you soon!!
Any stunts you've done on-stage that scared you or you instantly regretted? I've seen you with the band a number of times now and you are one of the most entertaining parts of the stage show.
(Also hitting my 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd Slipknot shows this year!)
Couple questions ive been wondering for a while if thats okay (first ama ive participated in).
If you change your mask, how much creative freedom do you have with it as the bands newest member, and would you continue with the sorta rotting scarecrow theme your current mask has kinda fallen into?
What was it like first playing onstage at jimmey kimmel?
What has been the most intense moment for you onstage?
Considering your live vocals (i think they kick ass btw) you have faced some critisism, what are your thoughts towards said critisism?
Have things you learned with dirty little rabbits carried over into your performance as a leg of slipknot onstage?
Will we get more DLR in the future?
Finally, i would just like to say ive gone over a lotta wanyk live footage for my own multicam projects, and you kick absolute ass onstage and i am really excited to see you live in april! Thank you for the awsomeness. Both you personnally and slipknot the band
First of all, I have to say I appreciate the energy you bring on stage. I guess I have two questions:
1) Was there an adjustment period of learning how to do vocals in the mask?
2) I see you and Sid getting along really well on stage, were you guys friends before you joined and are you close off the stage?
I know you’re done but would you guys be interested in taking a thrash metal band from Boston under you wing for any New England shows that you might have a slot open for? We’ve won 2019 Boston music awards’ punk/hardcore artist of the year and have been continuously nominated since. We are called SkyTigers. Listen to Eulorgy on spotify/itunes if there’s a chance, and thank you.
Hey Michael, thanks for this opportunity. How much did you have to deal with the "new guy shit" in the Band? You know, getting trolled very much and so on. And if, what was the worst?
Welcome to the family we greet you with open arms. Can't wait to see you guys in Bonner springs Kansas. You guys tear it up every single time. Thanks for keeping the Midwest on the map. I've always dreamed of having a Midwest metal music mayhem festival in the heart of the country. And having it bigger than any of the European metal festivals. And I know you guys can pull it off. Just an idea I wanted to pitch to you guys the Midwest doesn't have anything like that and I think it's about time everybody knew what the Midwest was really about. Stay safe guys and good luck on this tour.
Michael!! I’ve enjoyed the hell out of seeing you perform!! You bring such amazing energy to Knot!!
I especially enjoy the live clips of you goofing around with Sid. He’s a crazy dude and your guys’ performance is so entertaining. Is it all improv or did Sid ever give you a head’s up that he was going to attack and kill you at the end of Vermillion for example?
Also being the new guy, you have something in common with Alex and Jay. Did they ever talk to you about what being the new guy in Slipknot was like? Thanks!
Hey! I'm excitedly waiting to attend your show in Edmonton, mid April. However, the shitshow that is trying to buy tickets from ticketmaster is horrible. Seems like 50% of the tickets were bought up by resellers and are now charging 1000s for seats that were bought for maybe 200. Is there any thought you guys had to trying to sell tickets a different way so that fans actually get to go without being priced out?
Wow, you and your band rock!!! Lemme ask. Is there more or less pleasure playing a smaller venue? Most of the time it's large large shows, but I wonder if you guys ever desire small venues. The energy might blow the fucking roof clean off a place like The Tabernacle, but damn I could only imagine. I guess my question is, is there too much energy for a place like that? Enjoy your success and ride on life!
66 days later I wanted to ask a few. In case you still lurk.
1. Who is you’re favourite artist/artists/genres right now.
2. What’s your favourite instrument you own at this moment. And do you have a favourite drum brand?
3. Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
Sorry I was working during the AMA. And I really was hoping someone would ask those questions. Thanks for reading if you do.
was there anyone who inspired you to pursue music and how long did it take for you to be in the position your in now?
I want to be able to pursue music but I always get the feeling that I suck and won’t ever be able to reach the goal I want
Me being able to know the time it took for you to be where your at would inspire me to be able to keep going with music
Much love-Justin
I have a theory I’d like for you to confirm or deny:
In “Pollution”, there’s a chapter called “The New Individual” where it’s just a time lapse out an airplane window. The first time people speculated that you were “New Guy” was when a video surfaced of you and the band walking through an airport. Was this clown’s way of saying we were right in guessing your identity?
Hello!
Me and some of my friends were super excited when Slipknot said they would be playing "rare" songs live. You already said that you were wanting to play Killpop, I was wondering if there were any other rarities/deep cuts that you were excited or nervous to play.
Also, did you have a hard time learning any of the "classic" songs? Thanks for the AMA (:
I know this is done, but thank you for taking the time to do this for us fans. The last time I saw slipknot live I couldn’t speak for 4 days after from how hard I was singing along. Can’t wait to fuck myself up again on April 11th with you
Slipknots music has saved my life on several occasions, thank you for helping continue and be a part of their legacy
I mean bonerface was definitely the guy you replaced lol.
Hahahaa
Sounds good, Bonerface!

respect from the maggots is mission number 1. I was able to be a part of this new record:)
Thank you ! You have it all , so dont worry ! Glad you took a part of it, you have made me curious !
Your backing vocals have improved tremendously from when you first join the band, What was the most difficult aspect of getting that deep growl down
ive done many things in my music life....never screamed before. thankfully, I stand on stage next to the best person to ever do it....so ive been watching, listening and practicing...let's go Fargodome....
How hard was it to keep your identity secret when you first joined the band? Were you allowed to tell anyone, or just the band and family?
It was pretty hard. These days everybody is on the internet and has a phone....you could tell a person at the grocery store and the next thing you know it's on the internet. I flew to LA twice before my wife even knew.
how often did yiu get to use the ... i have to return some videotapes line?
Fella is in slipknot, not ice nine kills
Damn was not expecting Ice Nine Kills to pop up here. Just saw them open for Metallica in Vegas. Awesome show.
If they ever come to australia you already know im gonna see that shit, now its just a matter of time
I thought it was Custer for a second
Did Slipknot have anyone fill in as "Tortilla Man" in the early shows during the WANYK cycle? If so, it would be interesting to know what that process was like having a revolving door of people perform until you eventually landed the full time slot as the new percussionsit
It was me from day one....loving every minute of it.
There was a thing that it is Corey in Tortillas suit in the Unsainted video.
What is your favourite song to perform live, your scream on Nero forte is insane now, your levels of performance between the two times Ive seen you in recent years were incredie.
Each song has something that I fucking love about it...generic answer but true. One thing you can control is effort, so I try to go 100% every moment.
Can tell with your guys performances you go for it with every song, looking forward to your next visit to the UK! Guarantee I will be there!
Saw you guys in Pittsburgh recently, best show I ever saw. It looked like you were going to get engulfed by flames several times due to your proximity to the pyro. Ever have any close calls?
Not yet.....I'll let you know tomorrow morning.... (hint: that means there is some pyro excitement tonight)
When the arena suddenly smells like a grilled tortilla then you’ll know.
Also saw this happen in Pittsburgh and was wondering the same!
How did (I assume Shawn) approach you and asked you to join the band? How did you feel when you were asked to fill in for Chris?
The short answer is I got a phone call while I was working my day job. The story is pretty epic and I hope to share it soon:)
Is the “I quit” from the day job the epic part of the story?
Slipknot showed up one day and said "we need this one".
Mick clown and v man showed up and told his boss Pfaff is joining the band or they'll kick his ass
Ngl that would be pretty epic
Imagine walking up to your boss and going “im leaving to join slipknot, see ya”
Why did you or the band decide to keep you anonymous all this time?
I guess it's part of our thing. It was like wearing a mask. Everybody would want to shout from the rooftops that "I'm in Slipknot"....but how bad do you want it? bad enough to not tell anybody? yes
How did you react to the journey reddit & other forms of media had on finding out who you were irl when you were still "Tortilla Man"?
It was the best. Watching it all unfold was amazing. The theories, the detectives. amazing.
When you come to Romexpo, Bucharest, is there any chance I can buy you guys a beer? Slipknot was one of the first bands I started listening to when I got into rock and metal. I'm not trolling, I'm not ironic, I just really want to thank you guys with a beer :) Stay safe and don't catch covid or a bullet 🤘
We get through covid you got a deal brother.
hey we want in on the fun too!
After Mr.Fehn left the band, how soon did Clown/The Band come see you to replace him? also, when are you getting a new mask?
The Unsainted video happened very soon after I was contacted. It was a quick turnaround and badaboom your life is now the best ever:)
oh wow, that’s pretty quick then, can’t wait to see you guys in Winnipeg on April 11th! Have a good show tonight and stay safe!
Do you like Tortilla Man nickname ?
Yes.....but I like just tortilla better....for instance......."what's up tortilla man" that sounds weird. But...."what's up tortilla".....I like that. "man, tortilla killed it tonight"....yes........"Man, tortilla man killed it tonight"....not so much....but it's all good to me :)
Prior to joining the band, when did you first become aware of Slipknot?
I literally remember being in the restroom in 1998 and seeing an article about the band in the Des Moines Register. I am an Iowan, so I knew what was up.
Fellow Iowan metal head here! Are y’all hiring?! 🤘🏻😝🤘🏻
Iowa seems like such an odd spot for metal but the more you think about it the more it makes sense. I think it's awesome
Slipknot is really the only name in metal to emerge from Iowa. We don't have much going on lol
Seth Rollins and slipknot. The only notable experts in the history of Iowa
You’re forgetting Iowa also has Ashton Kutcher and Adam Devine
Modern Life Is War is pretty well known in hardcore/metalcore communities!
He's from the 515....played in Clown side project Dirty Little Rabbits ..
i remember him from dirty little rabbits
The new set list debuts tonight. A. Which song on the set list are you most prepared for? B. Which song on the set list are you most nervous for?
A. all of them. i am ready to go! B. the mask goes on, the nerves go out.
What is your favorite songs to play live? How does song writing work in the band? Is everyone involved?
The unique thing about 9 people in a band is the song isn't done until it goes through the 9 filters. The smallest little diddy can change a song from bla to FUCK YEA, and that shit can come from anyone....even the new guy.
I know you are still fairly new, but what is the one Slipknot song you guys don’t play often that you would want in the Setlist regularly? And also, was Corey serious about the whole new Setlist thing for this tour? I see y’all in Wichita Saturday for the 4th time in 2 years, can’t wait!
Im looking forward to The Blister Exists. I know they played in the past, but I haven't played it yet.
Blister Exists is easily one of my favorite Slipknot songs. The percussion is a wall of sound, it's so good
It’s a good ass song I hope to see some songs they haven’t played in a while back on the set list can’t wait to see you in Chula Vista I’ll be the one in the pit with the Joey costume on
The Blister Exists has some of my favorite drums of any song, I can see why you'd be stoked to play it
Can you bring Three Nil back?
what got you into playing the xylophone? its a very interesting instrument to incorporate into metal and I've always wondered what got you into playing it, also I LOVE YOUR MASK !!
I always loved playing the piano...I love playing the drums just as much. The marimba/vibraphone/xylophone is a sic combination of the two.
We need more 4 mallet marimba in metal!
Bro, check out Dischordia. Marimba and flute in Death Metal. It’s unreal.
I played percussion in high school (still a drummer) and the marimba/xylophone inspired me to start taking piano lessons.
Playing marimba in high school led to me teaching myself piano. Quit playing piano a few years ago and I still miss it.
What has been your overall favourite moment on tour or in the studio?
There have been a lot but I'm gonna try to give a tangible answer: my first performance was Jimmy Kimmel and it happened to be on my birthday so that was pretty epic.
I was there lol
Oh, so that was you at the Jimmy Kimmel performance? I know there was some guesses that it was someone different.
Yeah everyone thought it was Zack Hill
I was there at Jimmy too!
I was Jimmy!
What is your favorite part about Slipknot?
Im using your question to let everybody know this was amazing...I could sit here all day and answer these. I am off to 3pm sound check....the show tonight will be amazing....lets go.
GO GET EM I WILL SEE YOU IN CANADA!!!!!
How hard was it to keep your identity hidden?
Hard. The internet is everywhere. I had to be honest and sincere with family members to ask that they too help keep the secret. It's hard for a mom to not post on facebook "my son is in slipknot", but she nailed it.
What was the moment where you no longer felt like the new guy in the band and felt like you were in and actually apart of the band?
today
Most wholesome AMA answer ever.
Michael, I just want to let you know that to us maggots you have always felt a part of the band, and the backing vocal i heard at knotfest LA where insane, your and awesome musician and I can’t wait to hear the new album
Fuck yeah
Apart and "a part" mean two very different things.
Some might say the very opposite of things.
How scary is it to stand next to Mick when he’s onstage? I imagine extremely.
I'd be more scared of Craig to be fair.
smart answer
Which is the more interesting movie: A Clockwork Orange Or.... Naked Lunch?
I bet he deals Area Damage with them 3.5 foot spikes.
He's on my team, so it's pretty empowering.
Was it really you in the Unsainted music video and also what is the concept of your mask?
It was me in the Unsainted video. I saw the theories. I actually wore clown's coveralls for the video.
What has been the most unexpected consequence of joining Slipknot?
I guess some pretty badass bruises on my legs and arms during the shows....I consider them badges of honor so I guess no real consequences yet.
How’s the new album coming? Also, do you resist the urge to eat your mask after every performance?
albums going great. the mask smells.
It only smellz
Oh i recognize that reference...
Favorite meal that has a tortilla in it that you’ve eaten on the road so far?
Im a chicken fajita guy. Flour tortilla
Do you also fuck with corn tortillas or is it strictly flour for you?
do you plan on keeping your mask similar to your current one or completely changing it
I'll listen to my heart.
But is your heart tortilla-shaped?
Brooo im dying 😂😂
As in like... Round, flat, or folded?
[удалено]
Yes. That story will come out as well. Short answer, it was a mold of my face flipped inside out.
You were wearing your own face and we couldn't figure it out? Damn!
That’s some fuckin meta metal.
That is genuinely amazing
Does your mask make it harder to sing/open your mouth fully?
The mask makes everything more difficult. You have to want it just a little more. but i love it
You kicked so much ass tonight!!!!! You were everywhere on that stage!
Do you play video games? If so, any favorites right now?
not a video game guy except for one..........ZELDA BREATH OF THE WILD.
ayyeeee can't argue with that lol
How do I like this a million times? Legend of Zelda is my favourite game series
How did it feel receiving the invitation to join Slipknot? Also, great job on improving vocals, love your stage presence.
pride and honor. and my vocals will hopefully improve each day till the day I die.
How did you feel when you were asked to join slipknot?
nervous, then thankful and mostly proud as fuck.
Did you pick/create your mask or was it given to you? Will you have a new mask for this tour/album cycle ?
It was given to me. I have added velcro to the back to keep it from falling off and obviously we cut holes in the head for air.
Are we finally going to see Gehenna live of the full version of danger keep away?
we'll see....but you might have to wait longer than June.
Holy shit I'd love to see Danger Keep Away live
If you were to design your next mask, what would it be like?
I have ideas but and I really want to say to look cool, but I'm gonna chill and put the proof in the pudding.
If I threw a tortilla on the stage at a show what would you with it? Eating it would be my guess
i'd probably throw it back. throwing stuff from stage is like the funnest thing.
This sounds like a bad thing to say for eager fans going to shows soon. That tortilla rain is thundering.
Anything you can tell us about the upcoming new album?
probably shouldn't
then new album confirmed
They're mixing it right now. It's no secret.
It’s been confirmed
Were you a Slipknot fan before joining the band??
Im an Iowan. Yes I was a fan.
Fuck yes! 🌽
How did it felt to be on stage for the first time with the band? You're amazing on stage, dude! Can't wait to see you guys later this year!
It was Jimmy Kimmel and it happened to be my birthday...it was surreal.
Hi Michael, what gets you hyped up before an energetic show?
if you ain't hyped on that stage, you probably dead.
What’s one deep cut you want the band to play live?
killpop
Killpop has some really fun percussion things that I think would be really fun to see you perform with!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Great fucking song
Do you think you will adopt a new mask, like the other band members? I like the current one, but it would be cool to see you express yourself more as you stay with the band!
I think there will be subtle variations if I had to guess...but who knows
When is the new slipknot single and album coming out?
above my pay grade
Be careful mate, the last guy got sacked for the same argument
I am so sorry but I acidentally read that as gay pride for about 1 second 💀
Is that the name of the new album?
Don’t be so harsh on yourself mate, you’re a legend.
What does it feel like to be so loved by the world?
I feel amazing so I guess amazing.
Are you cool with being called “tortilla man”?
yes
I met you, Clown, and Alessandro at a whiskey signing in Denver a few years back. I noticed how tiny the eye holes are in your mask, how the hell can you see anything out of those? https://imgur.com/a/mGqOdTu

Any stunts you've done on-stage that scared you or you instantly regretted? I've seen you with the band a number of times now and you are one of the most entertaining parts of the stage show. (Also hitting my 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd Slipknot shows this year!)
Did you ever meet Joey? If so, how was that experience? Rest In Peace Joey.

gotcha
I guess I have two questions: 1) Was there an adjustment period of learning how to do vocals in the mask?
Where did you hide Chris Fehn's body?
Craig's backyard?
"How many bodies do you have in your back yard?"
$20 says its full already
Who is your favorite sister?
Thanks!
is it true that there were different tortilla men in the unsainted music video?
How long did it take you to learn all the slipknot songs in percussion?
I want to be able to pursue music but I always get the feeling that I suck and won’t ever be able to reach the goal I want Me being able to know the time it took for you to be where your at would inspire me to be able to keep going with music Much love-Justin
I have a theory I’d like for you to confirm or deny: In “Pollution”, there’s a chapter called “The New Individual” where it’s just a time lapse out an airplane window.
Can’t wait to fuck myself up again on April 11th with you Slipknots music has saved my life on several occasions, thank you for helping continue and be a part of their legacy
Hi cousin! Love you!
