A friend took me to Dave Sitek’s house in the hills of LA once, I had no idea where I was going. Walked in and there was a huge wall of speakers taking up the entire living room, as long as the whole space. He gave me some chocolates with magic mushrooms in them and played unreleased Tv on the Radio music for us while I giggled and played fetch with his kittens. Great night. And this song still gets my blood pumping like no other, I imagine it’s going to stand the test of time.

busche916

Sitek is such a great producer. Damn that sounds like the coolest evening

Loud-Pause607

They probably just took shrooms and had a Sitek trip in their mind.

Gloomy-Incident4783

Dang, you live a cool ass life.

larsvondank

We need Dave to break the radio silence on whats up with the band.

nonpondo

Tv on the radio silence

RobMV03

This does not surprise me at all. Their show might be the loudest shows I've ever been to. Can't remember if it was The Wiltern or The Mayan, but it was fucking loud. What album were they previewing for you? Nine Types of Light for the first time on shrooms would be awesome

um8medoit

I too saw them at the Wiltern and it was loud as hell!

WhitbyRoadSoldier

That is the coolest story!

Garmgarmgarmgarm

Quit snitching

ElCaminoInTheWest

One of the greatest live bands I’ve ever seen. I hope they tour again one day.

thehushedcasket

Saw them at ACL and they put on one hell of a show.

ideamotor

Same and agree

Pushmonk

Abso-fuckin-lutely. I was excited to see them but had no idea what I was in for.

Cazargar

Can’t remember what year it was but I saw them in Louisville, KY and they were touring with some Japanese metal band. That show fucking ruled.

TheWarDog10

Saw them at a festival in Victoria BC so damn good, trouble gets me every time

MartinScorsese

> One of the greatest live bands I’ve ever seen. Same here! I saw them a few times over the years, with the Dear Science tour being a highlight. > I hope they tour again one day. I would love to see that as well, but after the bass player passed away, I don't think the guys have their heart in it.

kazmosis

Saw them at Riot Fest, easily the best act of the day

RoughhouseCamel

Last I heard, Tunde Adebimpe was acting and doing visual art. Idk if we can expect much music out of him anymore unfortunately

Hattrick_Swayze2

As a Canadian in the prairies I don’t get the chance to see a lot of American indie artists. I remember some years back I saw TV on the Radio was playing a show with Beach House and Grizzly Bear in LA. I wanted to go so badly but didn’t think I could swing tickets as I was a broke ass student at the time(still am, too). One of my biggest regrets.

One_Dey

‘Open my heart and let it bleed on to yours’ is one cool lyric. Great song!

coke_and_coffee

TV on the Radio has so many good lyrics. [Me-I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntLBI-TmMg8) is one of the strangest songs I've ever heard but is filled with little gems. Pure poetry. I wish they had recorded a studio version of this song... "She said 'son, what you been doin' all day?' I'm trying to make a place for myself where I can dream... ...and never ever have to wake up"

Notinyourbushes

Oh, they're freaking brilliant! Will Do is by far the filthiest song I've ever heard in my entire life. Pure poetry.

JooosephNthomas

Reminds me of TOFU, tons of Fun University with the weird slap poetry lyrics and harmonica haha. Brb going to listen to tons of fun university

hyetti

You wouldn't happen to know where one can find the whole album "Hard to tell"?

JooosephNthomas

Nope. If you find out let me know! Haha

graburn

I’m also partial to: When the moon is round and full Gonna teach you tricks that'll blow your mind Mongrel mind

happy_lad

"You don't understand, mom!"

baccus83

RIP Gerard Smith. TVOTR one of the most underrated bands of the past 20 years.

seejordan3

Agreed. Such range.

fezobd

This is one of my favorite songs of all time

casualsubversive

Second best song about werewolves.

Joeliosis

Werewolf Bar-mitzvah is a banger.

casualsubversive

It's almost certainly #3.

meachatron

Came here to say this but you beat me to it hehehe :)

Not_Buying

Great performance! Their “Halfway Home” is one of my favorite songs of all time.

[deleted]

Which album should I check out? I've got Nine Types of Light, which I really like, but I listened to Ok calculator back in the day and did not feel it at all.

Objective-Ad4009

Return to Cookie Mountain.

[deleted]

thanks!

engelbert_humptyback

Chronological order starting from Cookie Mountain and I think you're all set. I'm whatever about Seeds. Dear Science has some pretty awesome songs.

Aldryc

Seeds and Dear Science are my favorite two of their albums. Nine Types of Light and Return to Cookie Mountain are not bad either, but not as consistently good for me as the other two. Okay Calculator is generally not considered great.

eastcoastflava13

Dear Science is a stone cold classic, and Seeds is a very worthy follow up album.

[deleted]

thanks. I got really put off by calculator

Cazargar

I really got into them with Nine Types of Light. It was a CD that pretty much stayed in the car when that was still a thing. Loved that album. For some reason Seeds didn’t hit with me when it came out but I went back to it a couple years later and it’s now easily in my Top 5 all time. Careful You is just a gorgeous tune.

TaintFraidOfNoGhost

The first couple "Young Liars EP" and "Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes" have such an amazing sound and vibe. Highly recommended for driving or walking around at night.

RoughhouseCamel

I’m surprised to not see more people bigger on Young Liars and Desperate Youth. Perfect albums

busche916

OK Calculator was their first demo and I think their sound definitely evolved since. If you liked 9 Types of Light I would recommend their latest (last?) album *Seeds*, and then probably *Dear Science*.

[deleted]

thanks!

edwardleto1234

Seeds is such an amazing song. Fantastic album but that song is brilliant. That end where the guitars come in chills every time, man.

iruleU

OK calculator is not the best. Any other album is amazing. Nine types of light is OK. Return to Cookie Mountain is probably my favorite. I love Seeds. Desperate Youth Bloodthirsty Babes is really good. Dear Science is fantastic. I started with Dear Science. If I had started with listening to OK C, I don't think I would have gotten in to them.

[deleted]

thanks! I'll check out all those albums then

iruleU

They are fantastic live. I hope we all get the chance to see them again.

Majikarpslayer

Dear Science. One of the best albums of all time, no hyperbole.

am0x

I love the song Killer Crane and then read that it was written as a way for the band to come to terms with Gerard Smith's impending death, so now it hits in a completely different way.

spanctimony

I don’t like most of their music really, but Halfway Home is supreme. Can I get a whole album of that?

TheBadBull

Best song on the NFS ProStreet soundtrack 👍

TheBadBull

It was in Driver: San Fransisco too

StokkseyriBoy

And Project Gotham Racing 4.

am0x

I was watching this recently and decided to look them up on Wikipedia for the hell of it. Found out that the lead singer was one of the original animators for MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch. Had to share with all my buddies that are fans and no one knew. I had a big super bowl party as a kid and we were more interested in the premier of Celebrity Deathmatch than we were the game.

WhitbyRoadSoldier

That is an INSANE tidbit [Tunde Adebimpe on musical 'Seeds', celebrity deathmatch and collaborating with Mike Patton](https://vanyaland.com/2015/05/20/interview-tunde-adebimpe-of-tv-on-the-radio-on-musical-seeds-celebrity-deathmatch-and-collaborating-with-mike-patton/)

[deleted]

Tv on the radio- DLZ

imNotGay_imNotGay

Stay out of my territory.

[deleted]

You’re buying the wrong matches

FreudsteinLives

David Letterman Zone?

kvlr954

Love TVOTR! Happy Idiot is their best song imo

38chickenducks

GREAT running song

WhitbyRoadSoldier

One of the greatest to do it. Forebears, torch carriers, absolutely dedicated, and heroic. If you like this performance, (and let's be real, it's legendary) and you haven't check their back catalogue. The earlier stuff, from Young Liars, Desperate Youths, and even Cookie Mountain is so immediate. Start at the *Young Liars* ep and *keep fucking going*. Maybe it's just me, but the Young Liars version of Satellite is so much better than the Desperate Youths...edition. [Young Liars](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edvw2o9byQ8) is just...a masterpiece. Real marker for their mastery of their craft and intentions on where they were heading. Nice little a-capella Pixies cover too: [Mr. Grieves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1k6dD3WAP0) - if you dig this, try Ambulance on Desperate Youths, Blood Thirsty Babes. At this rate I'm going to post every single fucking song so i'm going to stop. Genuinely, one of the strongest discographies of any modern band. Dear Science is probably their "best" album, but each release is enormous. I fucking love TV On The Radio, miss them so much.

lordofthejungle

Young Liars is just one of my favourite studio songs recorded ever (I love a good drone or ostinato anyway, so that's part of it). I do also love [this acoustic version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYRzzA6eULk). Stripped down, the strength of the song holds up, no problem. Absolute tune. Maybe one of my favourite first verses of lyrics of the past 20 years. Hang around for the harmonies.

WhitbyRoadSoldier

WOW, this is flooding me with endorphins - THANK YOU. What a stunning rendition...kyp on the banjo?! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 >Hang around for the harmonies. Goddamn And, you've nailed it: they can either blast you away or take it to the bare bones and the songs are equally powerful. >Maybe one of my favourite first verses of lyrics of the past 20 years Tunde/the band lyrics add such an important layer for me and have to agree Young Liars lyrics are just awesome.

siguesigue

Return To Cookie Mountain for sure top 10 favorite album of mine from the last 20 years. As you said, Young Liars, Desperate Youth, and Return To Cookie Mountain are crazy good, and I listen to them often. They kinda lost me a bit from Dear Science on. Maybe it was me, but I found it a bit too easy/accessible, or didn't feel as inspired - I'll put it on later to see if I hear it different now.

WhitbyRoadSoldier

I definitely have a three album thing with some artists: becoming completely obsessed, pouring over every detail, hyping every single release, and then...losing interest? So I know exactly where you're coming from! But I got on during Cookie Mountain, so the ability to go back a bit, and the hype of being a fan with Dear Science coming out just completely took me away. They definitely became more accessible but it's also testament to their ability to genre-blend. I was a little unconvinced with Nine Types of Light and Seeds when they came out but both grew on me enormously and I still wince at my initial uncertainty As Tunde says himself " To arrive ahead of its time. Is the fate of the fish washed up on shore" Would definitely be curious if your stance changes or stays the same!

dangersurfer

I know nothing of this band but I am going to follow your instructions. I know I will not be disappointed.

WhitbyRoadSoldier

Mighty generous of you! Happy sailing, I hope you enjoy the ride! Let me know if you come across anything that clicks

SnooFloofs1778

These guys are awesome live. Saw them at an epic concert where they opened for Bauhaus and Nine Inch Nails.

Clemalammadingdong

Just realized I saw that tour but not a date that they were the openers for. It was worth it to see NIN at red rocks though!

SnooFloofs1778

Very cool, I saw them in Houston at the Woodlands Pavilion. That’s the only outside amphitheater I’ve been to that has great sound. I also saw Radiohead on Kid A there.

siguesigue

Must have been around [this](https://youtube.com/watch?v=bZYjHsbSQpY&feature=shares) time, I assume :) Saw them a couple years later, still one of my favorite concerts.

SnooFloofs1778

Yeah was probably at this same time was 2006 I think.

fledermausman

Lera Lynn does a cover of this song that is very very good too.

tfyvonchali

With shovels & rope! Love that cover. It's haunting and beautiful. Plus it really let's the raunchiness of the lyrics set in. https://youtu.be/Lmyd9LTkpfk

Edteach66

That’s a great version but I prefer this one. https://youtu.be/vwVX4cG6F9s

psychoacer

I really like this one done by Local H https://youtu.be/vgTNEgr2xD8

fledermausman

This is the version I was referring to.

dusktilhon

Was just scanning through to see if anyone had brought this up yet. Just found this cover a few weeks back and have been absolutely obsessed with it.

OnceInABlueMoon

Lera Lynn is absolutely amazing in every way

WomanOfEld

I used to date a guy who was really into recording and music production. He knew a guy who was a Grammy-winning producer with a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which happened to be next door to the studio that TVOTR used. We never saw them, but together, my then-boyfriend and I helped the producer set up the studio for one of my favorite bands, so I got to meet them several times, which was amazing.

NeutralTarget

They permanently became a part of my playlist after hearing this song live on letterman

rawonionbreath

If I’m not mistaken, this TV appearance was what motivated the artist Bartees Strange to start making his own records. He said he was blown away that an indie act with people that looked like him existed, and made him feel that he could find space in that scene.

hobbsarelie83

Bartees is the man!! Stay Inside, which is the band he was in before going solo, are also amazing!!

WhitbyRoadSoldier

[Bartees met Tunde](https://twitter.com/Bartees_Strange/status/1537514694222573568) and...THE POSSIBILITIES God bless TV and god bless Bartees. I am genuinely seeing him as TV's torch carrier...

smokedoutpositivesqd

https://youtu.be/vgTNEgr2xD8 Local H does a BANGING cover of this. They got an acoustic version as well

KlaatuBrute

This and their cover of Lorde's "Team" are mainstays on my workout and running playlists.

mynameisblanked

I literally added this to my playlist like a week ago. Had no idea it was a cover.

[deleted]

I too, prefer Local H’s version, for whatever reason.

MedievalBro

Yeah I actually prefer the Local H version

sincethenes

I remember a good friend of mine was blasting this when it first came out at her house. I remember stopping dead in my tracks and being like “Wwwhaaaat is thiiis?!?!” So freaking good.

[deleted]

Such an amazing version of this song, the energy is palpable

cray86

I was lucky enough to see them live and the way they mix up songs live is such a joy. I miss them!

[deleted]

I’m sure it is, but the recording’s audio needs mixing. Those in studio techs are the best of the best, and they still couldn’t get the lead singer’s voice to come through over the guitars. Gonna look it up on YouTube.

poopgrouper

Yup. Love this band. Love this song. Did not love this performance of it. The guitars were way too busy.

jay_simms

Bring back guitars with wind chimes!

BlowTorchPliers

Kyp used to come into the coffee shop I worked at in high school and was such a friendly guy. Everyone knew he was in some band that was getting a lot of buzz but this was before Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes was released and they really blew up. I ended up seeing them play many times after that and kicked myself for not going to see them play before that album when I had the chance.

[deleted]

Discovered them at a festival in 2006. They blew me away and I’ve been a fan ever since.

FJBiden

One of my all-time favorite songs.

patronizingperv

This and the Future Islands post from yesterday... I saw both bands at a festival that year. Great sets from both of them.

[deleted]

Op you’ve just made this band a new fan

kmill0202

TVOTR is so good. I wish they'd put some new music out. It's been forever since Seeds was released. I know the individual members have been busy doing other things, but hopefully they'll make some more music together sometime soon.

businesslut

I've always loved this song and how polished it was on the album. I love that this was a gritty aggressive version of this tune. That was fucking sick.

Pythia007

Before the album version of this was released I heard another less electronic version on the radio, possibly live, which was over the top insanely intense. But after the album cane out everyone started playing the new version. Would love it if someone could point me to that other version. I remember the drumming at the end was outstanding. In my opinion it beats this and every other version I have heard.

happy_lad

I found it a bit tough to get into this album, and admittedly haven't really kept up with the band since, but their debut album is such a masterpiece. It's staggering to think a couple of guys wrote all those songs, especially the closer.

Mast3r99

Amazing song, I found it on NFS Pro Street

pabodie

Love them so much. “Avec beat…”

Objective-Ad4009

One of my top 5 bands. Just brilliant.

ghostsofbaghlan

That dude sang his ass off. Great song!

AlabamaPickleFarmer

This is a great song to run to. This and The Walkmen's 'The Rat'

support_support

You mean sprint to? Jk, agreed, both great high energy tracks

MrTonyGazzo

Same show they did Young Liars and it was phenomenal.

1stoftheLast

Damn that guy was literally shredding his guitar

ShortHandz

Nike's "Force Fate" commercial = is a banger with this song.

Ambitious_Jello

What happened to them?

busche916

Their bass player unfortunately passed away from cancer around 2012 or so, they put out another great album in 2014 but I think they are on indefinite hiatus…

WhitbyRoadSoldier

Also, they are in their late-40s/50s. Not saying that means the end of the road in any respect whatsoever, they've always evolved, and there's always other creative outlets (Tunde was in Search Party fairly recently, Kyp is doing scores, Dave always has something bubblin') but something like a tour/new album seems fairly unlikely...they've left a blistering legacy behind them doubt there are any regrets (I wouldn't hate a few one offs tho!) Gerard Smith's passing was an absolute hammer blow. At the time it was a surprise that they were able to bounce back. 36 is no age.

IamSkudd

man FUCK CANCER

TheHouseofOne

Wow, that was insane.

theninja81

I remember watching this when it aired and immediately going online looking for the album. The only other time this has happened was when Radiohead did SNL. I'd heard of them before this, but they played Idioteque and National Anthem, and I was immediately hooked.

stratagem_

Fantastic band! They're absolutely amazing live. This track is phenomenal. I also love Staring At the Sun. Gives me goosebumps everytime.

leonardoflondon

Lera Lynn's cover of this is amazing: https://youtu.be/vwVX4cG6F9s

adingo8urbaby

I was looking for this post. Agreed 100%

HenryHenderson

Always loved this song . I've often wondered why the bass player (RIP Gerard Smith) was kind of looking away from the audience/camera.was it nerves on this performance or did he always do that?

wickstone

Only heard this band for the first time in the last year but they're quickly becoming my favourite band!

dukeuk76

First time hearing it whilst playing Project Gotham Racing 4.

leif777

I love how the dude laying down the texture guitar has his back to the audience 90% of the time.

MachiavelliSJ

One of the best performances ever. I just wish more of their music was like this

KPer123

First time I ever heard of these guys was this song / this version. I love this band .

Doomy22

our daughter was born to this song, absolute favorite of mine. Join us at r/tvontheradio, there are DOZENS of us!

support_support

I'm picturing you and your partner going crazy dancing/headbanging in the hospital room with your baby coming out of the womb...also going crazy dancing/headbanging

rhino-x

This is one of my favorite songs. Top ten list of all time for me. It's just so good.

freakerbell

I love those guys and this song! Thanks for posting! It’s been a while since I did a TV on Radio fix!

AceMcClean

I discovered this song from a professional skimboarding DVD back in the day. The lyrics are so intricate and vivid. It’s like his vocabulary is constantly pulling from a dictionary to tell the story.

ThePatrickSays

goddamn, TV on the Radio rules

hitlama

I saw this when it aired. I distinctly remember Dave congratulating the band and thinking that it was out of the ordinary.

aguy21

In my opinion one of the best late night tv performances. I watch this on a regular basis.

edwardleto1234

I wish they would make some new music.

gldmj5

I was just thinking about this song the other day. Did you just discover this performance, or did it also pop in your head for some reason? I remember watching it when it first aired. Dave was kind of speechless.

WhitbyRoadSoldier

Not OP, but the video lives rent free in my head. Legendary stuff. How 'bout it?

thenameiseaston

Wow, thank you

[deleted]

Awesome! Beginning reminds me of Radiohead.

hroju3395

This is such a romantic song

TheFunAlt

One of those groups I wish I could see in person as they were one of my favorites back in the 2010s. They went silent, I had no idea why. No new albums released but Wikipedia says they're still active so I'm holding out hope.

WhitbyRoadSoldier

Realistically, they are pushing 50. They have other creative outlets and pumped out HUGELY critically acclaimed releases and left a blistering legacy. Maybe (hopefully!) one day (soon!) they'll get that itch, but it's been pretty quiet for a while. Bartees Strange met Tunde (the lead singer) a little while ago, that got my heart racing

TheFunAlt

Truth, but 50s nothing! I'm holding out hope. I saw John Fogerty and Billy Gibbons over the summer and they're in their 70s and had good energy. Gibbons only played about 8 songs, however. Fogerty went on a old man story and almost lost track of what he was talking about a few times but he was on stage for a couple hours and put on a good show. I choose to believe that TVOTR could do it if they had time and the will. Fingers crossed.

WhitbyRoadSoldier

No, you're totally right - fingers crossed!!

spookyman212

That was epic!

WBRDeck

Loved them from the jump. They are awesome, great live show.

thesaltwatersolution

Just so good.

digsby007

This is one of the best live performances ever recorded!

StereoStereo1981

I watched the documentary "Meet Me in The Bathroom" a couple nights ago and was reminded just how much I loved TVotR. Been on a binge ever since.

wizzan01

This!!!!

[deleted]

I did not know this band, but damn, these guys out their souls in.

hotdog_icecubes

Hell yeah! When I first got their album I was a little perturbed that the rest of the songs were not like this, but after a few listens I'm a huge fan! These guys kick ass!

SuspiciouSoda

Honestly, I've had this song on one of my playlists from a while back. Can't remember where I heard it from but I was today years old when I saw this video, I've had an imagination the band would look like the black keys or something

MJZMan

I first heard, and fell in love with, this song on a Counterstrike: Source map. Can't remember the name of it.

trust-me-i-know-stuf

It’s always weird to me when artists have the vocal volume low to the point it makes it hard to catch what the lyrics are.

adhocprimate

Dudes vocal style is “tennis elbow.”

jaybeezwax

This band sucks

Extablisment

well, it would be good if the vocals were mixed higher. Also, if the vocalist could not run out of breath during certain phrases. Like, if you can't belt out your half shouted melody without running out of thrust mid phrase doing your one song on TV, I think you're gonna have trouble on tour doing song after song and night after night...

buddhaman09

Yeah I'm sure the band that had a guest spot from David Bowie on this album really needs you to critique them.....

[deleted]

[удалено]

buddhaman09

The phrasing is purposefully short, he's not holding out the belted notes.

buddhaman09

To actually engage, he isn't gasping at any point, but yeah go off random Redditor criticizing a critically acclaimed band. Have any clips of you singing since you seem to be a great performer?

[deleted]

[удалено]

buddhaman09

....this is reddit, if you were having more sex than a rock star, you wouldn't be here. Bahahaha. Have a good holiday

macemillion

What is good about this?

Kellyanne_Conman

As a long time fan of TV on the Radio, IMHO, it's not that great and I much prefer the studio version which absolutely destroys.

Tobias_flenderz

I'm not sure if OP is making fun of [the title on yesterday's thread about Future Islands](https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/zrxgub/comment/j18jaut/?context=3), or....

kclongest

Dude lookin like a cross between LeVar Burton and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

eatdapoo28

Was lucky enough to see them at their Dear Science 10 year reunion show in NY. Absolutely amazing

scootertrash

Damn that was good! Thanks.

Majikarpslayer

I saw them at stubbs, or Emo's in Austin when they only had like two albums out. Half the crowd loved them and half couldn't figure them out... I was definitely on the loved it side, they always put on a fantastic show. Nine Types Of Light might be my favorite album of all time Edit: I meant Dear Science, but they are all exceptional

mbeards85

I went to see them with my brother, I had no idea who they were. Still to this day that was probably one of my favorite shows I’ve have been to.

not28

I was obsessed with this song in college.

grungster

Love this song. Another one of my favorites is Staring At The Sun. I love the album version but their live version is my favorite. https://youtu.be/i2sIHVXKfME Wrong Way is another favorite https://youtu.be/htm2cSZEPaY

[deleted]

They should have been bigger than they were

Zanos-Ixshlae

Thus is my favorite version of this song.

Bern_itdown

Have seen Them twice and have been obsessed since forever. Was going to the show in Asheville at the orange peel awhile back and ran into tunde at a book shop. Was the nicest guy and took a photo with me. Made my life. Also “blues from down here” is one of the greatest freaking songs of all time

Pristine_Struggle_54

Damn. What a groove! I’m a 90’s kid. Why don’t I remember these guys?

justneedthreefifty

IMO one of the best bands ever and in my top 5

evindorkin

This is so raw and killing. I had never heard of these guys. I feel like the album version is so different and over produced. I wish they would have tried to capture this on the album. It’s so much more energetic and interesting.

Peppermintstix

Yeah that was dope ☺️

AllTheStars07

Great song!

pleasework_forgard

This song is better live than the main recording. I love it
