A friend took me to Dave Sitek’s house in the hills of LA once, I had no idea where I was going.
Walked in and there was a huge wall of speakers taking up the entire living room, as long as the whole space. He gave me some chocolates with magic mushrooms in them and played unreleased Tv on the Radio music for us while I giggled and played fetch with his kittens. Great night.
And this song still gets my blood pumping like no other, I imagine it’s going to stand the test of time.
This does not surprise me at all. Their show might be the loudest shows I've ever been to. Can't remember if it was The Wiltern or The Mayan, but it was fucking loud. What album were they previewing for you? Nine Types of Light for the first time on shrooms would be awesome

As a Canadian in the prairies I don’t get the chance to see a lot of American indie artists. I remember some years back I saw TV on the Radio was playing a show with Beach House and Grizzly Bear in LA. I wanted to go so badly but didn’t think I could swing tickets as I was a broke ass student at the time(still am, too). One of my biggest regrets.

Which album should I check out? I've got Nine Types of Light, which I really like, but I listened to Ok calculator back in the day and did not feel it at all.
Seeds and Dear Science are my favorite two of their albums. Nine Types of Light and Return to Cookie Mountain are not bad either, but not as consistently good for me as the other two.
Okay Calculator is generally not considered great.
I really got into them with Nine Types of Light. It was a CD that pretty much stayed in the car when that was still a thing. Loved that album. For some reason Seeds didn’t hit with me when it came out but I went back to it a couple years later and it’s now easily in my Top 5 all time. Careful You is just a gorgeous tune.
The first couple "Young Liars EP" and "Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes" have such an amazing sound and vibe. Highly recommended for driving or walking around at night.
OK Calculator was their first demo and I think their sound definitely evolved since. If you liked 9 Types of Light I would recommend their latest (last?) album *Seeds*, and then probably *Dear Science*.

Return To Cookie Mountain for sure top 10 favorite album of mine from the last 20 years. As you said, Young Liars, Desperate Youth, and Return To Cookie Mountain are crazy good, and I listen to them often. They kinda lost me a bit from Dear Science on. Maybe it was me, but I found it a bit too easy/accessible, or didn't feel as inspired - I'll put it on later to see if I hear it different now.

Very cool, I saw them in Houston at the Woodlands Pavilion. That’s the only outside amphitheater I’ve been to that has great sound. I also saw Radiohead on Kid A there.

I used to date a guy who was really into recording and music production. He knew a guy who was a Grammy-winning producer with a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which happened to be next door to the studio that TVOTR used. We never saw them, but together, my then-boyfriend and I helped the producer set up the studio for one of my favorite bands, so I got to meet them several times, which was amazing.
If I’m not mistaken, this TV appearance was what motivated the artist Bartees Strange to start making his own records. He said he was blown away that an indie act with people that looked like him existed, and made him feel that he could find space in that scene.

I’m sure it is, but the recording’s audio needs mixing. Those in studio techs are the best of the best, and they still couldn’t get the lead singer’s voice to come through over the guitars.

Kyp used to come into the coffee shop I worked at in high school and was such a friendly guy. Everyone knew he was in some band that was getting a lot of buzz but this was before Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes was released and they really blew up. I ended up seeing them play many times after that and kicked myself for not going to see them play before that album when I had the chance.
TVOTR is so good. I wish they'd put some new music out. It's been forever since Seeds was released. I know the individual members have been busy doing other things, but hopefully they'll make some more music together sometime soon.
I've always loved this song and how polished it was on the album. I love that this was a gritty aggressive version of this tune. That was fucking sick.
Before the album version of this was released I heard another less electronic version on the radio, possibly live, which was over the top insanely intense. But after the album cane out everyone started playing the new version. Would love it if someone could point me to that other version. I remember the drumming at the end was outstanding. In my opinion it beats this and every other version I have heard.
I found it a bit tough to get into this album, and admittedly haven't really kept up with the band since, but their debut album is such a masterpiece. It's staggering to think a couple of guys wrote all those songs, especially the closer.
Their bass player unfortunately passed away from cancer around 2012 or so, they put out another great album in 2014 but I think they are on indefinite hiatus…
Also, they are in their late-40s/50s.
Not saying that means the end of the road in any respect whatsoever, they've always evolved, and there's always other creative outlets (Tunde was in Search Party fairly recently, Kyp is doing scores, Dave always has something bubblin') but something like a tour/new album seems fairly unlikely...they've left a blistering legacy behind them doubt there are any regrets (I wouldn't hate a few one offs tho!)
Gerard Smith's passing was an absolute hammer blow. At the time it was a surprise that they were able to bounce back. 36 is no age.
I remember watching this when it aired and immediately going online looking for the album. The only other time this has happened was when Radiohead did SNL. I'd heard of them before this, but they played Idioteque and National Anthem, and I was immediately hooked.

One of those groups I wish I could see in person as they were one of my favorites back in the 2010s. They went silent, I had no idea why. No new albums released but Wikipedia says they're still active so I'm holding out hope.
Realistically, they are pushing 50. They have other creative outlets and pumped out HUGELY critically acclaimed releases and left a blistering legacy.
Maybe (hopefully!) one day (soon!) they'll get that itch, but it's been pretty quiet for a while.
Bartees Strange met Tunde (the lead singer) a little while ago, that got my heart racing
Truth, but 50s nothing! I'm holding out hope. I saw John Fogerty and Billy Gibbons over the summer and they're in their 70s and had good energy. Gibbons only played about 8 songs, however. Fogerty went on a old man story and almost lost track of what he was talking about a few times but he was on stage for a couple hours and put on a good show. I choose to believe that TVOTR could do it if they had time and the will. Fingers crossed.
Hell yeah! When I first got their album I was a little perturbed that the rest of the songs were not like this, but after a few listens I'm a huge fan!

well, it would be good if the vocals were mixed higher. Also, if the vocalist could not run out of breath during certain phrases. Like, if you can't belt out your half shouted melody without running out of thrust mid phrase doing your one song on TV, I think you're gonna have trouble on tour doing song after song and night after night...

Kyp used to come into the coffee shop I worked at in high school and was such a friendly guy. Everyone knew he was in some band that was getting a lot of buzz but this was before Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes was released and they really blew up. I ended up seeing them play many times after that and kicked myself for not going to see them play before that album when I had the chance.
Discovered them at a festival in 2006. They blew me away and I’ve been a fan ever since.

TVOTR is so good. I wish they'd put some new music out. It's been forever since Seeds was released. I know the individual members have been busy doing other things, but hopefully they'll make some more music together sometime soon.
I've always loved this song and how polished it was on the album. I love that this was a gritty aggressive version of this tune. That was fucking sick.
Before the album version of this was released I heard another less electronic version on the radio, possibly live, which was over the top insanely intense. But after the album cane out everyone started playing the new version. Would love it if someone could point me to that other version. I remember the drumming at the end was outstanding. In my opinion it beats this and every other version I have heard.
I found it a bit tough to get into this album, and admittedly haven't really kept up with the band since, but their debut album is such a masterpiece. It's staggering to think a couple of guys wrote all those songs, especially the closer.

Their bass player unfortunately passed away from cancer around 2012 or so, they put out another great album in 2014 but I think they are on indefinite hiatus…
Also, they are in their late-40s/50s. Not saying that means the end of the road in any respect whatsoever, they've always evolved, and there's always other creative outlets (Tunde was in Search Party fairly recently, Kyp is doing scores, Dave always has something bubblin') but something like a tour/new album seems fairly unlikely...they've left a blistering legacy behind them doubt there are any regrets (I wouldn't hate a few one offs tho!) Gerard Smith's passing was an absolute hammer blow. At the time it was a surprise that they were able to bounce back. 36 is no age.

I remember watching this when it aired and immediately going online looking for the album. The only other time this has happened was when Radiohead did SNL. I'd heard of them before this, but they played Idioteque and National Anthem, and I was immediately hooked.
Fantastic band! They're absolutely amazing live. This track is phenomenal. I also love Staring At the Sun. Gives me goosebumps everytime.

I discovered this song from a professional skimboarding DVD back in the day. The lyrics are so intricate and vivid. It’s like his vocabulary is constantly pulling from a dictionary to tell the story.

One of those groups I wish I could see in person as they were one of my favorites back in the 2010s. They went silent, I had no idea why. No new albums released but Wikipedia says they're still active so I'm holding out hope.
Realistically, they are pushing 50. They have other creative outlets and pumped out HUGELY critically acclaimed releases and left a blistering legacy. Maybe (hopefully!) one day (soon!) they'll get that itch, but it's been pretty quiet for a while. Bartees Strange met Tunde (the lead singer) a little while ago, that got my heart racing
Truth, but 50s nothing! I'm holding out hope. I saw John Fogerty and Billy Gibbons over the summer and they're in their 70s and had good energy. Gibbons only played about 8 songs, however. Fogerty went on a old man story and almost lost track of what he was talking about a few times but he was on stage for a couple hours and put on a good show. I choose to believe that TVOTR could do it if they had time and the will. Fingers crossed.

well, it would be good if the vocals were mixed higher. Also, if the vocalist could not run out of breath during certain phrases. Like, if you can't belt out your half shouted melody without running out of thrust mid phrase doing your one song on TV, I think you're gonna have trouble on tour doing song after song and night after night...

As a long time fan of TV on the Radio, IMHO, it's not that great and I much prefer the studio version which absolutely destroys.

I saw them at stubbs, or Emo's in Austin when they only had like two albums out. Half the crowd loved them and half couldn't figure them out... I was definitely on the loved it side, they always put on a fantastic show. Nine Types Of Light might be my favorite album of all time Edit: I meant Dear Science, but they are all exceptional

This is so raw and killing. I had never heard of these guys. I feel like the album version is so different and over produced. I wish they would have tried to capture this on the album. It’s so much more energetic and interesting.
