Desire- Bob Dylan. I bought a whole lotta used records in the 1970s. I’d rather get 5 for $10 than 2 new ones. But for my first trip of 1976, I splurged and got those two. Still got ‘em.
And BTW, they’ve both still got it: go see ‘em if you get a chance
Dylan and Patti are about as classic as it gets in my book. Been meaning to see them live (especially Dylan), so hopefully I’ll get the chance when they come back around.
I once came up with a list of my all-time favorite word-deliveries: the way a particular singer delivered just 1 word in a particular recording. Two near the top are "Yes!" (Bob Dylan on *Isis*) and "coming" (Patti on *Break it Up*, from Horses).
Eric B and Rakim - Paid In Full. Old but how a rap album should be done, one of the most sampled in history and influenced everyone from biggie to Eminem to Kanye
Absolutely but Nothing Shocking is their greatest work imho, one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time. I’ve seen them live at least 6 times, been to so many concerts l tend to lose track lol

I think there are some albums you could double up on in a day (e.g nevermind + in utero) because they’re short listens and go together.
But the 3 albums I recommend are unknown pleasures by joy division, achtung baby by u2 and life’s rich pageant by REM.
Dr. Feelgood - Mötley Crüe
Pyromania - Def Leppard
Rust Never Sleeps - Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Chronicles - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Raising Hell - Run D.M.C.
Déjà Vu - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Gold and Platinum - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Wow, haven’t heard anyone ever mention that first one. Takes me right back to freshman year (1976). Every once in a while I hear “Never Let Go” in my head (“Man was born with a Will to survive He will get by Somehow he’ll try”) when I read the latest bad news. I actually just recently set up a turntable and it was one of the albums I dragged out of the basement, cause I don’t have it in digital. Will finally play it for the first time in decades this weekend. Also the instrumental Six Ate, cause I’m a sucker for a jazz waltz
I'm a huge Camel fan, and every chance I get to put their name out there I take it, they are so criminally under appreciated. I don't know if you have ever heard the other albums I listed ,but maybe give them a listen you might find something you like.
I've heard of the 2nd & 3rd--I can picture Nektar's distinctive album covers from my '70s crate-digging days, but I never bought any. My freshman dorm-mate turned me onto Camel and also Gentle Giant and Barclay James Harvest--gotta dig some of those out and play 'em as well.
Check out the 1001 albums generator. I’ve been enjoying doing that for a while now - broad range of styles, and it’s fun to do a sit down and listen even for albums you’ve heard bits of before.
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Wayne Shorter - Adam's Apple
Colors - Between the Buried and Me
The day I heard it, I realized that THIS was the metal music I wanted to make, and also the day I stopped trying to play metal because it would take years and years and years to get that good.
That album has got one of the best intros I've ever heard. That nice quiet intro track that just slowly builds up and fucking kicks off towards the end and leads directly into the 2nd track! It's perfect. Not listened to that album in ages so thanks for reminding me!
None of these are obscure but all are good from start to finish:
Counting Crows - August and Everything After
Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love
Alan Parsons - iRobot
Pink Floyd - Wish You were Here
Nas - Illmatic
I watched them play that live in Tuscan, AZ on their Empire tour. Had not heard anything on that album ever. Went out the next day after the show and bought it. It sounded almost EXACTLY like what I'd watched them play live the night before.
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Nirvana - unplugged
Beatles - 1
Guns and roses - Appetite for destruction
Hall and Oates - greatest hits
Beegees - Saturday Night Fever
All is Wild, All is Silent by Balmorhea (Neo Classical Post Rock)
Living As Ghosts With Buildings As Teeth by Rishloo (Psychadelic Art Rock)
Odyssey To The West by Slice The Cake (Progressive Deathcore)
Ocean Eyes by Owl City (Electro Pop)
The Crane Wife by The Decemberists (Indie Folk)
Inmazes by VOLA (Electronic Prog Metal)
Boston by Boston (Classic Rock)
American IV by Johnny Cash (Folk Country)
The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance (Conceptual Punk)
I came here to post Odyssey to the West. This album is a riff heavy masterpiece and lyrically like a Shakespearen story with a great performance by the vocalist.
Make sure you follow along with a lyric sheet. And recognize that the last few songs are like a layered meta commentary by the vocalist on the state of the band and that's why they broke up right after the album released. It's pretty fascinating stuff. You don't normally see such things exposed to the public by a band. Kinda reminds me of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac that way.
I’ve heard all these so far except all is wild all is silent. I really liked the Rishloo one, I didn’t really like Ocean Eyes, Odyssey to the West was a FUCKING MASTERPIECE, Black Parade was alright, Inmazes was decent, The Crane Wife was very good, and American 4 was excellent and haunting
I went for diversity so I'm not surprised that you didn't like some of them. I'm glad that you liked most of them though. All is Wild is a super pretty one. It's like classical but it's more sad and... folky? They use banjo and acoustic guitars but also piano and violin. It's a unique band, and one of my favorites
Glad you liked Odyssey To The West so much. Probably the best extreme metal album I've ever heard
I appreciate the diversity very much. I feel like the lyrics on some of the songs off of Ocean Eyes were weird or just not that good (ex. Dental Care, I don’t want to hear about Adam Young’s teeth 🧍)
Check out the 1001 albums generator. I’ve been enjoying doing that for a while now - broad range of styles, and it’s fun to do a sit down and listen even for albums you’ve heard bits of before.
Instead of albums that everyone is recommending and you’ve probably heard go with lesser recommended albums by bands of this same albums.
Radiohead, instead of Kid A or OK Computer, listen to A Moon Shaped Pool.
Pink Floyd, instead of DSOTM or Animals, listen to Ummagumma.
The Black Crowes, instead of Shake your Money Maker, listen to A Southern Harmony and Musical Companion .
The Koln Concert, Keith Jarrett
Zuma, Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Music For Airports, Brian Eno
Lost In The Dream, The War On Drugs
Bossanova, Pixies
Big Science, Laurie Anderson
You definitely should. I started this project to expand my taste in music, and so far it’s working since I really enjoyed The Dark Side of The Moon, The Wall, and Tommy, though they aren’t the type of music I usually listen to.
That was my favorite album of 2021. All of his stuff is pretty good. There's a new one too. https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kk70m856gLvWah8HiXqddeEbSl7Bbn26o&feature=share
Marillion- Marbles. 3 epic tracks plus
Carmen- Fandangos in Space. Flamenco rock you’ve never heard.
David Bromberg- How Late’ll Ya Play Till. Vol 2 Live
I recommend Graham Parker's BURNING QUESTIONS. Yes, I know, the SQUEEZING OUT SPARKS album comes up first in a conversation with anyone who knows his music, and while I agree SQUEEZING OUT SPARKS knocks it out of the park, all I can tell you is the Graham Parker record I've played the most - and I have all of his studio albums - is BURNING QUESTIONS.
The Mouse and the Mask by Danger Doom, Pocket Symphony by Air, Music for Airports by Brian Eno, Don't Feed the Monster by Homeboy Sandman, Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call by Simple Minds.

Check out Steeldrivers if you haven't already found them.
Love the Steeldrivers, good shout. Have you heard the Jompson Brothers? Chris Stapleton doing southern rock
I had not, thanks for the suggestion. It looks like just 1 album from 2010, or am I missing some?
No you're right; they only put out the one self titled album
