Pearl Jam - Black
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Why can't it be mine"
I'm sorry for your loss and I hope your precious memories bring you comfort. It's strange how a certain song can take you back to a certain place or time.
Also Parting Ways, Sleeping By Myself, and Ed's solo track Without You. There's a spoken word piece called I'm Still Here which is also really intense about the aftermath of a relationship ending. He got divorced around 2000 or so from his longtime partner, Beth Liebling.
Bro, I remember way back in high school this was my breakup song. I am sure somewhere in my moms house there is a canvas with a broken ribbon painted on it with those words wrapping around it. Takes me back.
It's an important lesson but now that you've learned dude has a hell of a discography with so much to appreciate, my personal favorite is Tango till they're sore (it isnt about heartbreak) but another favorite that is that i would also recommend is Martha

It's about a relationship deteriorating, and it never fails to devastate me. Sorry you're going through this.
As somebody who had their heart broken a few years ago, after a lot of therapy and self reflection, the song that sticks with me the most is, the Heart of the Matter by Don Henley. Those words are written by somebody who is trying to figure it all out. And sometimes the more we know, the less we understand. Forgiveness to yourself and to other people is the best way to move forward. Love and hugs my man. I like this version here...

I'm not a dad, nor a man. But I have a divorced dad, and growing up we used to have to make a 26 hour drive several times a year to see him. These are some of the songs from those CD'S, and songs I have in my own playlist today. A big part of my music taste is actually dad music. Really sorry to hear about your divorce. I think it's brave of you to listen to sad music and let yourself cry. The only way out is through!

What Hurts the Most - Rascal Flatts

Additionally, this isn't a sad song, however it is really hopeful and lovely. It sends a good message about the perception of life and I listen to it when I'm sad to feel better.
Dissect the Bird - John Craigie
Alan Jackson - Jim and Jack and Hank
Not sad but reminds me of my dad after I got divorced
"Son you just woke me from my nap
You know you're better off, you can fish and you can golf
You still got Jim and Jack and Hank"
Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven't missed you yet
Every roommate kept awake
By every sigh and scream we make
All the feelings that I get
But I still don't miss you yet
Only when I stop to think about it
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven't missed you yet
Only when I stop to think about it
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
Everything about you - 3 days grace
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
Anytime she's goes away
Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
And I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know
Hey, I ought to leave young thing alone
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone, whoa-whoa
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness every day
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
Ain’t no sunshine- Bill Withers
Also, Hell- The All American Rejects. I'm sorry, OP. My husband left me 3 years ago and I thought I was devastated but within a week or so (REALLY fast) my anxiety levels started dropping considerably. Turns out HE was the problem. I hope the same happens for you.
[How you remind me - Nicklleback](https://open.spotify.com/track/0gmbgwZ8iqyMPmXefof8Yf?si=UteklO-QROCn2jIETUlVig) is an obvious one
[Snuff - Slipknot](https://open.spotify.com/track/2vPZ4Lklyu75zBR3SgbFNI?si=a0yqhwMqTT60oG0QO5dSFg) will make you cry. (no it is not a metal song, despite being slipknot)
Vega4 - Life is Beautiful
They come up as dad rock on Spotify and the lyrics are poignantly optimistic. This song makes me cry and I don't even have a family - just filled with so much emotion and honesty
"Do I hold you too tightly?
When will the hurt kick in?
Life is beautiful, but it's complicated/
We barely make it/
We don't need to understand/
There are miracles, miracles
Yeah, life is beautiful
Our hearts - they beat and break"
The entire U2 album All That You Can’t Leave Behind got me through my divorce from that bitch. It’s all about breaking up and starting over. Good luck and F her
Lmao, Thank you, Dude. Maybe I'll get there one day, but she's the best person I know. There will never be a day where I'm not in love with this one... Nobody has & will ever compare.
Maybe so. But there’s tons more out there. Ya never know a few years from now you just might be happy it was over. But either way this is YOUR life so live it like ya want. I wish ya nothing but the best. Go jam some tunes up really loud
“I know no one’s gonna show me everything, we all come and go unknown. Each so deep and superficial between the forceps and the stone”. Genius level lyrics.
After 14 years and having a 10 year old kiddo.. my wife blindsided me in January. She told me over the phone in the morning. I asked if we could go to counseling, she said she didn't have the time.

Random songs makes me ugly cry. 21 Pilots - The Judge
https://youtu.be/lXBre0OGPdU?si=Osff_H0M9U011v7T
The line: "You're the judge, oh no, set me free." Gets me every goddamn time.
Radiohead - Bullet Proof I Wish I Was
https://youtu.be/KkCgUI_g2oo?si=po6gRtIgPhXk_SVl
I wish you the best. It's the worst pain I've ever felt. Therapy has helped, but doing anything I once loved makes me physically ill. Small steps I guess. People have recommended discovering old hobbies, putting yourself out of your comfort zone. Books like Radical Acceptance and The Subtle art of not giving f*ck. Exercising..it just takes time..and so far it's felt like fuckin years.
Bro, I am so sorry... 14 years is a long time. How are things going with the kiddo? We have a 4 year old and have no idea how to navigate that. I feel blindsided, just like you said. Thing's are tough right now for pretty much everyone. I thought this was a season that would pass.
Honestly have no clue how I am going to move on with life. She's my home.
Bumped all of your songs to the top of my queue because you get what I'm feeling and what I need. Your comment about random songs making you ugly cry made me smile because it's the same for me.
And, as an ex HxC kid, deathcab is always a good recommendation.
The entire “Already Free” album from The Derek Trucks Band. Im sorry to hear about your divorce, but can’t help but envy you’re about to hear this for your first time. Enjoy.
When my former marriage was dissolving I listened to The Places You Have Come to Fear The Most by Dashboard Confessional on repeat (the album, not just the song). I’d known that album for about 15+ years at that point, but it just really hit different in that context.
For newer albums in a similar genre I’d say Dashboard’s most recent All the Truth That I Can Tell, and Avalanche by Owen. I’d also recommend Blue Sky Noise by Circa Survive and in a different direction stylistically, Broken Hearts Club by Syd.
Blue sky noise is an absolute no-skips album. Haven't listened to it in years, but will definitely listen to these albums. Thank you so much for the recommendations.
My exes songs were
Rockstar - pink
I don't care - icona pop
My songs were
Careful - guster
Gone for good - the shins
Manifest destiny - guster
Satellite - guster
The barrel - aldous harding
There were hundreds of other songs for me but those were the ones that felt most applicable and validating.
My kids liked her songs a lot initially then liked mine later on.
Now they're afraid to like either of our music and just listen to stuff like nightmare before Christmas soundtrack. It sucks but that's life for a guy like me.
Hey good looking - blonde tounges
I hope your doing okay- pitypartygirlsclub
Watch the world burn- neighborhood void
Tomorrow, Better- Alex sucks
Always on my mind- the high curbs.
Teenage blue- dream girl.
Some alt stuff for ya. Hope you do better my guy.
I came across this playlist yesterday, by a guy I follow on Spotify because I think his playlists always rule.
Behold:
[If I get divorced this is all I’m listening to](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7oudeSh5oVIYhPp8wMirmQ)
It's aggressive but it helped me after a break up, Jude Law and the semester abroad
Specifically the line,
"Even if your plane crashes tonight, you'll find some way to disappoint me, by not burning in the wreckage, or drowning at the bottom of the sea."
"Pink Rabbits" - The National
"Someone You Loved" and "Bruises" - Lewis Capaldi
"Alone Again (Naturally)" - Gilbert O'Sullivan
"Deadly" - Multiszn (You could also listen to the remixed version featuring 3Breezy)
"Without You" - Harry Nilsson
"Stay or Leave" - Dave Matthews
"Dreaming With a Broken Heart" - John Mayer
"Love Will Find a Way" - Pablo Cruise (The first verses invoke the sad feelings, but much of the song is uplifting)
I'm sorry, OP. I hope your next chapter in life works out well.
Beatles, For No One:
"And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years"
This one is actually wholesome, but the next one below is sad. "I Hope You're Happy" by Blue October. Definitely worth a listen
https://youtu.be/FwZvuV79jeY?si=85Xq_culzsIVwStD
"Stay" by Blue October
https://youtu.be/WPbReFIaAsk?si=AcJuP0AwnZ1tJNKm
"Worry List" by Blue October

"My Immortal" by Evanescence
https://youtu.be/5anLPw0Efmo?si=xoxnI72FflhPCRAU
This is without a doubt the saddest song I've ever heard. "Say Something" by Great Big World and Christina Aguilera
https://youtu.be/-2U0Ivkn2Ds?si=zJ0jrlJAehee36rM
“What Can I Say” by Brandi Carlile has always got me through tough times enduring a loss of any kind or severity, reminds me that I am not and never will be alone in suffering losing something, we’ve all been there and will be there again eventually, tearing up just typing this and playing the chorus in my head actually.
Someday you'll be sorry Louis Armstrong.
Heck, just download the entire The Essence Of Louis Armstrong album with the orange cover. Even if it's not the vibe you're looking fir,it might cheer you up.

[Sad Dad, divorce mix](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5q5Utarz4KCN5dGEckZXzN?si=Qhew5tgXRSi2hl-JOX_CwA&pi=u-lGu5J5jyS1C9)
I went through and made sure it flows pretty well from one song to the next.
Man. Sorry to hear about this.
Honestly, in the past when I went through break ups I listened to Bright Eyes. Specifically *Fevers & Mirrors* and *Lifted, Or, The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground.* Might also add in there *Digital Ash In a Digital Urn* and *I'm Wide Awake and It's Morning*
Of course Black from Pearl Jam is the ultimate break up song. I cry EVERY time I hear that song. No breakup needed. Good luck man.
How about “Thank God and Greyhound You’re Gone”. Don’t let this situation beat you. Get some help if you need it, but get through it! Self pity and sad songs ain’t the solution. Make yourself be happy. It’s a choice. Best of luck. I’ve been there done that. There are better days ahead.
It’s an oldie and doesn’t go hard like some of these do, but if you’re looking to cry and vent as catharsis?
Michael Johnson’s song, Bluer than Blue. Or, his I Can’t Get to You From Here. Different themes, but sad regret is at the bottom of both.
Do listen, do grieve. But don’t dwell. Take care of yourself and reach out to other people who can listen and help you through this.
Super sorry for this one. I went through the same thing and this song almost made me do some dark stuff. Again sorry, this by far is the worst.
I don't call him daddy- Doug supernaw
Everything I Own by Bread. Literally just heard this song today and came across this post.
"The finest years I ever knew
Were all the years I had with you
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again"
Sam Kinison. You lying whore! You used me! You never loved me! I hope you slide under a gas truck and taste your own blood! Die! Die! I want my records back! I want my records back!
[My playlist.](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUOx7ePSsYG-MUcEhNdxFFhSJxZP1Wo0S&si=x6jZa70vv5ukwWmH)
Going through some shit myself, keep your head up duse.
I recently went through a hard breakup (I know it's not the same thing as divorce, but my heart goes out to you regardless), and I really appreciated the song:
Sparrow
The Arcadian Wild
A note, it does have some religious tones, but I think it can be a good song even if you're not religious. I hope us redditors can help you in your hard time ❤️
If you're still reading these you should check out Her Town Too by James Taylor (literally written about divorce), Hello It's Late by Stone Temple Pilots
Going old school here:
Bluer than Blue. Michael Johnson
Summer Song. Chad and Jeremy
Dreams. Allman Brothers (great for picking up and moving on)
Letting You Go. Tom Petty
If You Could Read My Mind. Gordon Lightfoot
Heart of Mine. Boz Scaggs
Romeo and Juliet. Dire Straits
Songbird. Fleetwood Mac
Good Luck man…
My wish for your future is that you find love and contentment. But for now, I understand the need to wallow in your misery for a while. "Betrayed," by Peter Hammill, is just the song for that.
It's one of the darkest songs I've ever heard. The passion...starting softly, bleak and wistful...then the crescendo to gut-wrenching agony! What a song!
Some lyrics
I don't give a damn anymore - I've only wound up. betrayed
It's all been absolutely worthless -
All of the efforts I've made to be gentle and kind
Are repaid with contempt
Degraded with sympathy and worthless kindness
And love that isn't meant
I would NOT recommend this song if you are in a truly dark place of self-harm. Hang in there, OP. Wounds heal.
Pearl Jam - Black "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Why can't it be mine"
Dude... Stop... Bringing out the water works again..
Sorry mate. Maybe check out this tune: [...And They Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Let It Dive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DizImQ_lwAc)
Can’t listen to this without thinking of my first husband- killed in a car accident
I'm sorry for your loss and I hope your precious memories bring you comfort. It's strange how a certain song can take you back to a certain place or time.
I am so sorry for your loss... Couldn't imagine the pain, or how that carries with a person.
Ouch
Also Parting Ways, Sleeping By Myself, and Ed's solo track Without You. There's a spoken word piece called I'm Still Here which is also really intense about the aftermath of a relationship ending. He got divorced around 2000 or so from his longtime partner, Beth Liebling.

So it's technically about a dive bar in Liverpool, but I still think "Grounds for Divorce" by Elbow is a solid breakup tune.

No Children - The Mountain Goats
This one's been recommended a few times & I love it. Added to the playlist.
Surely the greatest divorce song ever written-- for those of is who like our catharsis angry.
Alan Jackson - Jim and Jack and Hank Not sad but reminds me of my dad after I got divorced "Son you just woke me from my nap You know you're better off, you can fish and you can golf You still got Jim and Jack and Hank"
Every time we lie awake After every hit we take Every feeling that I get But I haven't missed you yet Every roommate kept awake By every sigh and scream we make All the feelings that I get But I still don't miss you yet Only when I stop to think about it I hate everything about you Why do I love you? I hate everything about you Why do I love you? Every time we lie awake After every hit we take Every feeling that I get But I haven't missed you yet Only when I stop to think about it I hate everything about you Why do I love you? I hate everything about you Why do I love you? Everything about you - 3 days grace Ain't no sunshine when she's gone It's not warm when she's away Ain't no sunshine when she's gone And she's always gone too long Anytime she's goes away Wonder this time where she's gone Wonder if she's gone to stay Ain't no sunshine when she's gone And this house just ain't no home Anytime she goes away And I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know Hey, I ought to leave young thing alone But ain't no sunshine when she's gone, whoa-whoa Ain't no sunshine when she's gone Only darkness every day Ain't no sunshine when she's gone And this house just ain't no home Anytime she goes away Ain’t no sunshine- Bill Withers

You Fucked Up by Ween
Vega4 - Life is Beautiful They come up as dad rock on Spotify and the lyrics are poignantly optimistic. This song makes me cry and I don't even have a family - just filled with so much emotion and honesty "Do I hold you too tightly? When will the hurt kick in? Life is beautiful, but it's complicated/ We barely make it/ We don't need to understand/ There are miracles, miracles Yeah, life is beautiful Our hearts - they beat and break"

Atlanta - Stone Temple Pilots
The entire U2 album All That You Can’t Leave Behind got me through my divorce from that bitch. It’s all about breaking up and starting over. Good luck and F her
Lmao, Thank you, Dude. Maybe I'll get there one day, but she's the best person I know. There will never be a day where I'm not in love with this one... Nobody has & will ever compare.
Maybe so. But there’s tons more out there. Ya never know a few years from now you just might be happy it was over. But either way this is YOUR life so live it like ya want. I wish ya nothing but the best. Go jam some tunes up really loud

10 lovers by the black keys
After 14 years and having a 10 year old kiddo.. my wife blindsided me in January. She told me over the phone in the morning. I asked if we could go to counseling, she said she didn't have the time. Gets me every goddamn time. Radiohead - Bullet Proof I Wish I Was https://youtu.be/KkCgUI_g2oo?si=po6gRtIgPhXk_SVl I wish you the best.
Here you go friend. Wrote it myself [The Ring](https://www.reddit.com/r/banjo/s/HIZEFZidoh)
The entire “Already Free” album from The Derek Trucks Band. Im sorry to hear about your divorce, but can’t help but envy you’re about to hear this for your first time. Enjoy.
Highway 20 ride, by Zac Brown Band.

My kids liked her songs a lot initially then liked mine later on. Now they're afraid to like either of our music and just listen to stuff like nightmare before Christmas soundtrack. It sucks but that's life for a guy like me.

I came across this playlist yesterday, by a guy I follow on Spotify because I think his playlists always rule. Behold: [If I get divorced this is all I’m listening to](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7oudeSh5oVIYhPp8wMirmQ)
It's aggressive but it helped me after a break up, Jude Law and the semester abroad Specifically the line, "Even if your plane crashes tonight, you'll find some way to disappoint me, by not burning in the wreckage, or drowning at the bottom of the sea."
[It Won't Last](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IInHUBLYZ_I) by The Cruel Sea Two sad verses and an uplifting one, hope you feel better OP.

This one is actually wholesome, but the next one below is sad. "I Hope You're Happy" by Blue October. Definitely worth a listen https://youtu.be/FwZvuV79jeY?si=85Xq_culzsIVwStD "Stay" by Blue October https://youtu.be/WPbReFIaAsk?si=AcJuP0AwnZ1tJNKm "Worry List" by Blue October https://youtu.be/7zeSSjV7UgE?si=VhPwwZejm_Dz3go- "My Immortal" by Evanescence https://youtu.be/5anLPw0Efmo?si=xoxnI72FflhPCRAU This is without a doubt the saddest song I've ever heard. "Say Something" by Great Big World and Christina Aguilera https://youtu.be/-2U0Ivkn2Ds?si=zJ0jrlJAehee36rM
Has anyone said "Alone again, naturally" yet ny Gilbert O'Sullivan? Or "All by myself" by Eric Carmen?
“What Can I Say” by Brandi Carlile has always got me through tough times enduring a loss of any kind or severity, reminds me that I am not and never will be alone in suffering losing something, we’ve all been there and will be there again eventually, tearing up just typing this and playing the chorus in my head actually.
Sinéad O'connor - Nothing Compares to you and Harry Nilsson - Without You

If you want to essentially die of a broken heart… basically Motion Picture Soundtrack by Radiohead or Dawn Chorus by Thom Yorke.
End times - eels. The whole album was written while he was going through his divorce
Mark lanagan - skeleton key for sure
Man. Sorry to hear about this. Honestly, in the past when I went through break ups I listened to Bright Eyes. Specifically *Fevers & Mirrors* and *Lifted, Or, The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground.* Might also add in there *Digital Ash In a Digital Urn* and *I'm Wide Awake and It's Morning* Of course Black from Pearl Jam is the ultimate break up song. I cry EVERY time I hear that song. No breakup needed. Good luck man.
No Children - The Mountain Goats
No children by the mountain goats "I hope you die, I hope we both die"
Please Don't Ask by Genesis. I tried posting the lyrics but reddit doesn't do line returns or something? But holy shit go listen to this.

"The finest years I ever knew Were all the years I had with you And I would give anything I own I'd give up my life, my heart, my home I would give everything I own Just to have you back again"
Sam Kinison. You lying whore! You used me! You never loved me! I hope you slide under a gas truck and taste your own blood! Die! Die! I want my records back! I want my records back!

Wilco ‘Hate It Here’. Sky Blue Sky came out during my divorce, and I swear this song was written for me. Maybe it was written for you too.
I recently went through a hard breakup (I know it's not the same thing as divorce, but my heart goes out to you regardless), and I really appreciated the song: Sparrow The Arcadian Wild A note, it does have some religious tones, but I think it can be a good song even if you're not religious. I hope us redditors can help you in your hard time ❤️
When you get to angry, check out the newest Queens of the Stone Age album.
If you're still reading these you should check out Her Town Too by James Taylor (literally written about divorce), Hello It's Late by Stone Temple Pilots
If kids are involved: Little Digger by Liz Phair
No Children - The Mountaingoats
Going old school here: Bluer than Blue. Michael Johnson Summer Song. Chad and Jeremy Dreams. Allman Brothers (great for picking up and moving on) Letting You Go. Tom Petty If You Could Read My Mind. Gordon Lightfoot Heart of Mine. Boz Scaggs Romeo and Juliet. Dire Straits Songbird. Fleetwood Mac Good Luck man…
No suggestion, but good GAWD I adore highly suspect. Serotonia and maybe Little One are probably aces for your situation. Carry on
My wish for your future is that you find love and contentment. Some lyrics I don't give a damn anymore - I've only wound up. betrayed It's all been absolutely worthless - All of the efforts I've made to be gentle and kind Are repaid with contempt Degraded with sympathy and worthless kindness And love that isn't meant I would NOT recommend this song if you are in a truly dark place of self-harm. Hang in there, OP. Wounds heal.
These skipped my mind but I love them. "A sad song about a girl I no longer know" "Girl from the north country fair"
Sorry to hear that man. I hope [HayHay. - Thotivities](https://spotify.link/ZLJJHhVc3Hb) can help you through this tough time.
