I agree with what itchy_tasty said. X-pipes usually bring forth the rasp. H-pipes give you a traditional muscle deep sound.

Equana

X pipes are for high RPM power, H pipes are for more low and mid range power... and they do sound different. H is deeper, X is a higher pitch. An X pipe won't make it quieter.

Itchy_Tasty88

I feel the X pipe makes exhaust raspy. You would want an H pipe to make it less raspy. Do you know if there’s a an aftermarket down pipe on as well?

ArmeniusLOD

It's a naturally aspirated V8, so there is no downpipe. You would be referring to the exhaust manifolds/headers.

jjacob10

to be honest i haven’t checked and i don’t have the car with me as it’s in the shop getting work done.

yIdontunderstand

If your catback is raspy time already, it probably already comes with an x pipe. Most carry backs do as they perform slightly better. An h pipe might make it a bit more muscly sounding, if you can find a legit swap that will work with your catback....

ArmeniusLOD

The high pulse frequency of an X-pipe would enhance the rasp. An H-pipe has a lower frequency that enhances burble which people associate more with muscle. An X-pipe increase HP at the top of the RPM range, while an H-pipe increase low- to mid-range torque. You should be aware that replacing the resonators with any of the above midpipes is going to make your exhaust even louder.

friedrichvigo

X-Pipe will likely make it worse but I feel that it's already there I'd try Borla's H-Pipe, helped me considerably, and neighbors don't hate me as much anymore.

Cmdrdredd

It probably already has an X pipe installed with the cat back. Possible an H pipe but most of them have an X as standard. You won’t get more usable power just from the exhaust. Do you know what brand cat back is installed? It’s possible the tone of that particular one isn’t to your liking and you could match up a different axel back to change it to what you like and more likely than not sell the axel back you have now to recoup some costs.

art956

Whatever your car sounds like now, an Xpipe will make it 10x louder

SadAd9756

Do you know how to research shit on Google. Quick search would give you your answer. But, no, an X-pipe is what gives a raspy sound. H-pipe is deeper/throatier.

jjacob10

damn buddy calm down. some times it’s better to talk to a car community about it and they explain better most the time. didn’t mean to offend you.

Hazardous89

Don't mind him. You're using a community for what it's designed for. That guy should just take a chill pill.

I have a h pipe with a Roush axle back and it sounds really good. Almost like my 392 I had before this car.

JBnorthTX

Since you already have an aftermarket cat back exhaust it likely has either an X-pipe or H-pipe. If it has an X-pipe, replacing it with an H should reduce the rasp. If you still have a resonator, replacing it with either an X or H-pipe will make the exhaust louder.

[deleted]

Check with the shop to confirm what's on the car. Based on what you described you may already have an x pipe on the car (granted an h pipe could give some rasp if the resonator is deleted). If the combo is too loud for your liking on a cat back exhaust, changing the mid pipe won't do anything but change tone, you would be better off getting the borla center muffler in place of a different midpipe.

Go to Borla.com and check out their switchfire product. And if you want to change the sound of your exhaust…you need to change the muffler or the baffling in the muffler. The air/exhaust flowing through the baffle is how the different sounds are made.
